    Abstract: Emerging from a series of seminars on 'Cultures of Consumption' which encouraged a robust interdisciplinary debate, this volume focuses on the temporal and spatial dimensions of consumption. The contributors specifically explore the changing dimensions of consumption as networking across temporal and transcultural contexts. In considering spaces and places of consumption, it explores how these are delineated and scaled over time, and how the politics of scale play out over the changing networked relationships of local, national, transnational and globalized consumption spaces. In these spatial processes, the role of 'place' can become both fixed and malleable. In some cases, 'placed' commodities appear to act at a distance, acquiring value and 'reputation', while in other cases, commodity biographies of place are suppressed by mechanisms of displacement. A team of leading scholars from the USA, UK and Latin America analyze the different orderings of the 'power of space' in the historical, material and cultural constructions of consumption. In doing so, the book also questions the way the changing nature of consumption is dealt with theoretically and conceptually across space, place and time and the complicity of this analysis.

    Abstract: This study, which is an updated, extended, and revised version of the out-of-print 1993 edition, reassesses the traditional stereotype of the place of the Balkans in the model of the European family in the nineteenth century on the basis of new source material and by synthesizing existing research. The work first analyzes family structure and demographic variables as they appear in population registers and other sources, and the impact of these findings on theoretical syntheses of the European family pattern. On most features, such as population structure, marriage and nuptiality, birth and fertility, death and mortality rates, family and household size and structure, as well as inheritance patterns, the Balkans show an enormous deal of internal variety. This variability is put in a comparative European context by matching the quantifiable results with comparable figures and patterns in other parts of Europe. The second section of the book is a contribution to the long-standing debate over the zadruga, the complex, collective, joint or extended family in the Balkans. Finally, the book considers ideology and mythology and the ways it has adversely affected scholarship on the family, and broadly on population history.

Women murderers were often portrayed as vengeful wronged women or as maternal protectors. Recently, however, there have been significant shifts in the characterization of women who kill, in both popular culture (Lara Croft, Buffy, and Kill Bill) and in the current global political landscape (the so-called angels of death in Palestine). The essays in this book explore gender and violence by focusing on visual culture -- films, museums, art, archives, and the news media -- and by engaging with contemporary theories and practices of identity politics and the debates about the ethics and politics of representation itself. Does representation create or recreate the conditions of violence? Is representation itself a form of violence?     Abstract: The movement of nation building in Islamic societies away from the secular or Pan-Arab models of the early twentieth century toward a variety of 'nationalisms' was accompanied by growing antagonism between the Muslim majority and ethnic or religious minorities. The papers in "Nationalism and Minority Identities in Islamic Societies" offer a comparative analysis of how these minorities developed their own distinctive identities within the modern Islamic nation-state. The essays focus on identity formation in five minority groups - Copts in Egypt, Baha'is and Christians in Pakistan, Berbers in Algeria and Morocco, and Kurds in Turkey and Iraq. While every minority community is distinctive, the experiences of each show that a state's authoritarian rule, uncompromising attitude towards expressions of particularism, and failure to offer tools for inclusion are all responsible for the politicization and radicalization of minority identities. The place of Islam in this process is complex: while its initial pluralistic role was transformed through the creation of the modern nation-state, the radicalization of society in turn radicalized and politicized minority identities. Minority groups, though at times possessing a measure of political autonomy, remain intensely vulnerable. -- Back cover.
