    Abstract: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion. A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas. The book brings together the current discussion of methods and assembles contributions that move along the spectrum of ethnography, mixed methods, and digital humanities and are framed by method(olog)ic reflections that the contributors have undertaken together

    Abstract: Intertextuality 2.0 bridges the gap between linguistic research on intertextuality and research on metadiscourse through a case study analysis of online discussion boards about weight loss. This book examines how people use linguistic strategies such as repeating or paraphrasing others' words with multimodal resources like emojis and GIFs in online discussion boards focused on weight loss support to create intertextuality - or connections between texts, interactions, and other creations that facilitate meaning-making. These strategies allow posters to engage in metadiscourse, or communication about language and communication.     Abstract: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein.     Abstract: Wer unsere heutige Medienwirklichkeit verstehen will, kommt nicht umhin, sich mit den Technologien rund um Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und Algorithmen auseinanderzusetzen. Folgerichtig hat sich in jüngerer Zeit innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ein Forschungsstrang entwickelt, der diese Technologien - zumeist aus kritisch-interventionistischer Perspektive - ins Zentrum rückt. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dagegen "postkritisch" und "bottom-up" den gesellschaftlichen Selbstbeobachtungen im Hinblick auf die KI-Technologien im öffentlichen Diskurs und entwickelt für deren Erforschung das Programm einer Medienkulturrhetorik. Dieses Programm bringt Kulturwissenschaft und Rhetorik zusammen, um die Handlungsmöglichkeiten spätmoderner Subjekte im "KI-Zeitalter" zu ergründen, und wird im Rahmen einer empirischen Fallstudie zur massenmedialen Berichterstattung über KI und der Auseinandersetzung mit ebendieser in den sozialen Medien am Beispiel Facebook erprobt. Anspruch dieser Untersuchung ist es, sowohl einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung kulturwissenschaftlicher Methodologie als auch für ein tieferes Verständnis unserer Kulturen zu leisten und dabei zugleich Anknüpfungspunkte für die (didaktische) Praxis zu bieten.

    Abstract: The role of migration for Christianity as a world religion during the last two centuries has drawn considerable attention from scholars in different fields. The main issue this book seeks to address is the question whether and to what extent migration and diaspora formation should be considered as elements of a new historiography of global Christianity, including the reflection upon earlier epochs. By focusing on migration and diaspora, the emerging map of Christianity will include the dimension of movement and interaction between actors in different regions, providing a more comprehensive 'map of agency' of individuals and groups previously regarded as passive. Furthermore, local histories will become parts of a broader picture and historiography might correlate both local and transregional perspectives in a balanced manner. Behind this approach lies the desire to broaden the perspective of Ecclesiastical History - and religious history in general - in a more systematic manner by questioning the traditional criteria of selection. This might help us to recover previously lost actors and forgotten dynamics.

While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech,but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders.     Abstract: Arguments over the relationship between Canaanite and Israelite religion often derive from fundamental differences in presupposition, methodology and definition, yet debate typically focuses in on details and encourages polarization between opposing views, inhibiting progress. This volume seeks to initiate a cultural change in scholarly practice by setting up dialogues between pairs of experts in the field who hold contrasting views. Each pair discusses a clearly defined issue through the lens of a particular biblical passage, responding to each other's arguments and offering their reflections on the process. Topics range from the apparent application of 'chaos' and 'divine warrior' symbolism to Yahweh in Habakkuk 3, the evidence for 'monotheism' in pre-Exilic Judah in 2 Kings 22-23, and the possible presence of 'chaos' or creatio ex nihilo in Genesis 1 and Psalm 74. This approach encourages the recognition of points of agreement as well as differences and exposes some of the underlying issues that inhibit consensus. In doing so, it consolidates much that has been achieved in the past, offers fresh ideas and perspective and, through intense debate, subjects new ideas to thorough critique and suggests avenues for further research.

Rather than viewing the term as simply denoting a type of positive social relationship that needs to be formed between researcher and consultant before research can begin, the book invites us to reimagine rapport theoretically, methodologically, and meta-methodologically. In doing so it invites the reader to think about how rapport has been constructed within these disciplines, and ultimately to see rapport as an emergent, co-constructed social relationship that is built during situated multimodal encounters. This reconceptualization is essential to establishing a more sophisticated understanding of research context.

    Abstract: To what extent can Islam be localized in an increasingly interconnected world? The contributions to this volume investigate different facets of Muslim lives in the context of increasingly dense transregional connections, highlighting how the circulation of ideas about 'Muslimness' contributed to the shaping of specific ideas about what constitutes Islam and its role in society and politics. Infrastructural changes have prompted the intensification of scholarly and trade networks, prompted the circulation of new literary genres or shaped stereotypical images of Muslims. This, in turn, had consequences in widely differing fields such as self-representation and governance of Muslims. The contributions in this volume explore this issue in geographical contexts ranging from South Asia to Europe and the US.     Abstract: Games are a unique art form. Game designers don't just create a world; they create who you will be in that world. They tell you what abilities to use and what goals to take on. In other words, games work in the medium of agency. This book explores what games have to teach us about our own rationality and agency. We have the capacity for a peculiar sort of motivational inversion. For some of us, winning is not the point. We take on an interest in winning temporarily, so that we can play the game. Thus, we are capable of taking on temporary and disposable ends. At the center of this book is a view about games as communicative artifacts. Games are a way of recording forms of agency; they are a library of agencies. And exploring that library can help us develop our own agency and autonomy.

    Abstract: Water is a global resource for modern societies - and water was a global resource for pre-modern societies. The many different water systems serving processes of urbanisation and urban life in ancient times and the Middle Ages have hardly been researched until now. The numerous contributions to this volume pose questions such as what the basic cultural significance of water was, the power of water, in the town and for the town, from different points of view. Symbolic, aesthetic, and cult aspects are taken up, as is the role of water in politics, society, and economy, in daily life, but also in processes of urban planning or in urban neighbourhoods. Not least, the dangers of polluted water or of flooding presented a challenge to urban society. The contributions in this volume draw attention to the complex, manifold relations between water and human beings. This collection presents the results of an international conference in Kiel in 2018. It is directed towards both scholars in ancient and mediaeval studies and all those interested in the diversity of water systems in urban space in ancient and mediaeval times.     
    Abstract: Wasser ist eine globale Ressource für heutige Gesellschaften – Wasser war eine globale Ressource vormoderner Gesellschaften. Die manigfaltigen unterschiedlicher Wassersysteme für Prozesse der Urbanisierung und das urbane Leben in der Antike und dem Mittelalter ist bislang kaum erforscht. Die zahlreichen Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen nach der grundlegenden kulturellen Bedeutung von Wasser ( bzw. power of water) in der Stadt und Wasser für die Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Symbolische, ästhetische oder kultische Aspekte werden ebenso thematisiert wie die Rolle von Wasser in Politik, Gesellschaft oder Wirtschaft und dem alltäglichen Handeln, aber auch in Stadtplanungsprozessen oder städtischen Teilräumen. Nicht zuletzt stellen die Gefahren von verschmutzten Wasser oder Überschwemmungen die städtische Gesellschaft vor Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge diesen Band lenken den Blick auf die komplexen und vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Wasser und Menschen. Das Sammelwerk präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer internationalen Tagung in Kiel 2018. Es wendet sich gleichermaßen an Leser aus den altertumskundlichen wie mediävistischen Fächern und darüberhinaus an alle Interessierten, die sich über die Vielfalt von Wassersystemen im Stadtraum der Antike und des Mittelalters informieren möchten

    Abstract: Centering Pakistan in a story of transnational Islam stretching from South Asia to the Middle East, Simon Wolfgang Fuchs offers the first in-depth ethnographic history of the intellectual production of Shi'is and their religious competitors in this 'Land of the Pure.' The notion of Pakistan as the pinnacle of modern global Muslim aspiration forms a crucial component of this story. It has empowered Shi'is, who form about twenty percent of the country's population, to advance alternative conceptions of their religious hierarchy while claiming the support of towering grand ayatollahs in Iran and Iraq. Fuchs shows how popular Pakistani preachers and scholars have boldly tapped into the esoteric potential of Shi'ism, occupying a creative and at times disruptive role as brokers, translators, and self-confident pioneers of contemporary Islamic thought.

    Abstract: Anthropological theory can radically transform our understanding of human experience and offer theologians an introduction to the interdisciplinary nature between anthropology and Christianity. Both sociocultural anthropology and theology have made fundamental contributions to our understanding of human experience and the place of humanity in the world. But can these two disciplines, despite the radical differences that separate them, work together to transform their thinking on these topics? Robbins argues that they can. To make this point, he draws on key theological discussions of atonement, eschatology, interruption, passivity, and judgement to rethink important anthropological debates about such topics as ethical life, radical change, the ways people live in time, agency, gift giving, and the nature of humanity. The result is both a major reconsideration of important aspects of anthropological theory through theological categories and a series of careful readings of influential theologians such as Moltmann, Pannenberg, Jungel, and Dalferth informed by rich ethnographic accounts of the lives of Christians from around the world. In conclusion, Robbins draws on contemporary discussions of secularism to interrogate the secular foundations of anthropology and suggests that the differences between anthropology and theology surrounding this topic can provide a foundation for transformative dialogue between them, rather than being an obstacle to it. Written as a work of interdisciplinary anthropological theorizing, this book also offers theologians an introduction to some of the most important ground covered by burgeoning field of the anthropology of Christianity while guiding anthropologists into core areas of theological discussion
