    Abstract: Ein neunköpfiger Männerchor, begleitet von zwei Hornbläsern, geht zu einer Stelle nahe dem Dorf, um eine Darbietung zu geben, wie es bei Ringerfesten und bei anderen zeremoniellen Anlässen der Fall ist. Zunächst tritt ein Vorsänger auf, ihm antwortet der Chor, und dann blasen die Hornbläser einzeln oder zusammen. Singen und Blasen wechseln sich mehrmals ab.
    Abstract: A male chorus singing at wrestling festivals and on other ceremonial occasions is supplemented by two horn-players: the chorus responds to the solo singer, then the horns are blown.

    Abstract: Ein Mädchen schnitzt ein flaches, längliches Schwirrholz, dreht aus einem Knäuel Baumwolle eine Schnur und befestigt das Schwirrholz damit an einer Gerte. Stehend spielt es mit dem fertiggestellten Spielzeug, das es ruckweise in kreisende Bewegungen versetzt. Dabei werden leise, surrende Laute erzeugt.
    Abstract: A young girl fastens a long, flat piece of wood to a previously twisted cotton thread whose other end she ties to a flexible switch. While standing she plays with the finished whirring stick which she sets into circling motions with short jerks; slight whining noise is thus produced.

His technique is shown in detail. After the signal horn is finished the carver shows it to another man who carefully judges the quality of the piece of work.

    Abstract: Matjemosh, ein etwa 30jähriger Holzschnitzer aus Amanamkai, fällt einen Baum im Busch, schneidet ein Stück davon ab und fährt es in seinem Einbaum ins Dorf. Dort bohrt er mit einem Grabstock ein Loch durch den Stamm und erweitert es mit brennenden Holzspänen. Außen wird der Stamm mit einer Axt in Sanduhrform gestaltet. Der geschnitzte Griff stellt eine Gottesanbeterin dar.
    Abstract: The woodcarver Matjemosh is shown cutting a log from a tree and drilling a hole through it with a digging stick. WIth chips of burning wood the hole is widened and shaped like an hourglass. The outside, too, is fashioned like an hourglass. This, however, is done with the help of an axe and a planing iron. The handle is carved with a small chisel and a knife to represent a praying mantis (wènèt), a sacred insect in Asmat iconography symbolizing the ancestor-headhunter.

    Abstract: Ein Junge formt aus dem mit Wasser versetzten, tonigen Material eines Termitenhügels in Spiralwulsttechnik eine kleine Kugelflöte. Der obere Rand wird ein wenig nach innen eingedrückt, so daß die Öffnung kleiner wird. Mit einem starken Halm bohrt er 2 cm unterhalb der Öffnung zwei kleine Löcher in den Tonkörper im Abstand von etwa 2 cm zueinander und probiert sein Instrument aus.
    Abstract: A boy coils clay from a termite hill making a little ball-shaped flute. With a strong straw he pierces two holes 2 cm apart and then plays his instrument.

    Abstract: Zwei Frauen weben gemeinsam an einem horizontalen Webstuhl mit zwei Litzenstäben im Sommerweidegebiet am Siwa-See einen gemusterten Wollteppich: Aufbau des Webstuhls, Aufspannen der Kette, Einschlingen der Litzenstäbe, Weben, Abschneiden des Teppichs mit Fransenbildung.
    Abstract: Setting up a horizontal llom with two heddles. Stretching a double warp by winding figures of eight. Attaching the warp threads to the heddles and fixing the heddles by means of drawcords to both arms of a lever-like longitudinal rod. By alternate raising and lowering the shed is formed. Light-coloured, red and black woollen threads are inserted. The result is a weft-faced rib weave with horizontal stripes. The finished carpet is cut from the loom and the loom is removed.

    Abstract: A Tibetan refugee rug-weaver stretches the cotton warp on a vertical heddle loom, placed horizontally on the floor, and fixes the heddle rod.     Abstract: Shows the most significant stages of an investigation into the death of a drowned villager. News is spread throughout the village; preliminary interrogations take place; some dancers gifted with magical powers attempt to decide where the blame should be placed; a hearing is held in the sultan's court. Some weeks later a second interrogation takes place with the sultan. A final decision is rendered and the court confirms it.

    Abstract: Beim Jatabu-Tanz des Najanamo-Festes umtanzen die Männer im Gegenuhrzeigersinn eine in der Kreismitte stehende Frau, vor der zwei Stäbe im Boden stehen, unter Gesang und Musikbegleitung (Klarinette, Kerbflöte, Rasseln). Beim Jabisanaku-Tanz schreiten Männer und Frauen paarweise untergefaßt im Dreiviertelkreis langsam rückwärts.
    Abstract: The film shows the ritual najanamo and jabisanuka dances of the warrau. In the najanamo men sing to the sound of a clarionet and a flute, while they are dancing around a woman, who stands in the middle of the dancing place behind two sticks (jatabu). In the inside of the circle formed by the men a single man dances with a rattle. The Jabisanuka is danced by both sexes. Couples of men and women holding each other around the hips are slowly dancing backwards. From time to time the group stops and one single pair of dancers, of which the man again holds a rattle, is quickly stepping to the center of the circle.

    Abstract: After harvesting maize in a field Ayaman men and women go the maize cobs to a house in front of which they place them into a heap. Then they watch two men finnishing bamboo flutes (turas) and instrumments out of deer skulls which are blown through the occipital hole (cachos). Later they all go together to a spring taking the instruments with them. At the entrance of a small cave they begin to dance, move then to a better, even ground wehere they continue dancing and where a young woman with a crown has joined them.

    Abstract: Aus Schilfrohren baut ein Angas-Mann eine floßförmige Zither. Die Arbeitsvorgänge sind das Abspleißen der Saiten aus Rohr, das Einbinden des Instrumentenkörpers, das Einfügen der Holzstege, die Stimmung der Saiten und das Anfertigen des Resonanzkörpers. Als Hilfsmaterial dienen Bast, andere Pflanzenfasern und Palmblätter. Nach Fertigstellung probiert der Erbauer seine Zither aus.
    Abstract: An Angas man in the village of Langshi constructs a raft-zither from reed sticks, bast, vegetable fiber, and palm leaves. Excerpts are shown of each step in the production, including the tuning of the strings.

    Abstract: At the time of the maize harvest the Ayaman are celebrating the great Tura together with the mestizo population. The feast lasts several days and takes sugar cane stalks. At the dance participate the master of the ceremony, the leaders of local groups with their hunters, assistants and musicians who are playing on their instruments (tura-bamboo-flutes, deer-skulls and rattles).

In den Harfenkörper wird seitlich der Harfenhals eingesetzt, in der Mitte der Fellbespannung befestigt man ein als Saitenhalter dienendes Holzstück. Schließlich wird ein Schalloch in das Fell geschnitten, und die fünf aus Bastfasern gedrehten Saiten werden gespannt.

    Abstract: Am zweiten Tag nach dem Tode des Sippenoberhauptes finden vor seinem Gehöft Tänze statt. Eine Opferziege wird zum Gehöft gebracht. Einen Tag später treffen Leute aus dem Heimatdorf des Verstorbenen ein und nehmen an den Feierlichkeiten teil. Am vierten Tag werden weitere Tänze aufgeführt. Zum Abschluß werden Opfergaben zum Gehöft des Verstorbenen getragen, und ein Widder wird rituell geschlachtet.

    Abstract: The film shows part of a warrau shield-fight. On an open place two rows of men armed with high rectangular shields are facing each other with the intention to knock each other on the floor with the shields. As soon as the first man lies on the ground the others stop fighting and women come to dance around the loser. After having knocked him down again, the winner choses an other man. The fight ends when both are lying on the ground, while women are surrounding them by dancing.

    Abstract: Im Rahmen eines Initiationsvorganges unterziehen sich junge Bororo-Fulbe dem Scharo (Soro). Dabei werden sie von einem Altersgenossen mit einem Stock auf den Oberkörper geschlagen. Nach den ertragenen Schlägen bezeugen die umstehenden Mädchen und Angehörigen ihre Sympathie. Abschließend tanzen die Mädchen den Hirde-Tanz, bei dem sich die gezüchtigten Jünglinge dazugesellen.

    Abstract: The film shows the performance of the Überlingen sword dance in 1962. It begins with the morning breakfast of the colour-comppany and of the "Hänsele". After forming up the colour-copmany and the rest of the companies march to divine service and then to the town hall square. After the burgomaster has given his approval the dance is performed. The sword dance is followed by a maidens' dance. A second performance of the sworrd dance was filmed once again.

The dance consists of two parts: The sword bridge, the sword thershold, and the so-called "Paschen".     Abstract: Pilger verdienen sich auf einer Wallfahrt zu einem lamaistischen Kloster durch Gesang- und Tanzvorführungen ihre Wegzehrung: 1. Ein Mann mit einer Maske, begleitet vom Gesang einer Frau, führt einen Tanz auf. Anschließend singt die Frau mit Trommelbegleitung des Mannes. 2. Auf einem Dorfplatz führen fünf Pilger Tänze auf, die von Musik und religiösen Liedern begleitet werden.
    Abstract: Two pilgrim, a man and woman, in a pilgrimage to a lamaist monastery earn food for their journey by chanting and dancing. The man is wearing a mask of textile material and yak hair. He accompanies his wife's singing with drum rhythms. In a later phase the woman reads chanting texts; the husband accompanies her on the big drum. In the second part of the film a group of five pilgrims perform a dance.

    Abstract: A fully ordained Lama with a bell and a small hour-glass-shaped hand drum performs so-called Undras, that is magic circles and symbols. The assistant aids him and beats small cymbals. The texts of the prayers are recorded on a cloth which the Lama holds now and again.

    Abstract: The film shows parts of a performance of Tscham dances in the monastery at Gangtok. First of all the temple guards march from the temple to restrain the audience witnessing the performance; thereafter the lamaist temple orchestra appears. One after another appear skeleton dancers, who are Lamas and are considered to be envoys of the underworld, then the sword and shield carrying warriors who are members of the Tibetan nobility, afterwards the so-called blackhat magicians and finally the most important Gods protecting Tibet portrayed by dancers in animal masks.

    Abstract: Männer stellen Rindenbaststoff für die Initiationsfeier der Mädchen her: Sie fällen einen Baum, schaben die äußere Borkenschicht ab, klopfen und lösen die darunterliegende Rindenbastschicht, waschen und dehnen sie. Sie bereiten rote und grüne Farbe aus Urucú und jungen Palmblättern und bemalen damit den fertigen Rindenbaststoff mit verschiedenen Tiermustern.
    Abstract: The Tucuna Indians produce a piece of bark bast and paint it for the initiation celebration of the girls. A tree is felled. After the outer bark has been carefully removed, the inner bast layer is loosened from the trunk by knocking. It is carefully removed, washed, dried and stretched. Red and green dye are prepared. Several Tucunas decorate the bast of the bark with coloured animal drawings.

    Abstract: A member of the Kraho tribe fashions a mask from palm leaf material, working first on the facial portion. When the mask and its leaflet dress are finished, a sample dance is performed and the mask is painted.

Aus dem Barren zieht er Draht (Durchmesser etwa 0,35 mm), zwirnt diesen und formt daraus Ringe und Rosetten. Diese lötet er auf eine Platte, die er aus Silberblech ausgeschnitten hat.
    Abstract: A rural silversmith from Stesdal making a traditional filigree brooch. He melts rubbish from silver wire and silver sheet in a melting pot. He pulls wire (0,35 mm diameter), twins it and forms rings and rosettes. These are soldered on a silver plate.

    Abstract: Ausschnitte aus den zum letzten Mal ausgeführten Totenkulttänzen des damals noch freilebenden Reststammes der Umutina. Die Maskentänzer, die die Seelen verstorbener Verwandter verkörpern, sind immer Männer und werden von Frauen nur begleitet. Gezeigt werden der Bakurétanz (Flagelliertanz des Waldhundes), der Hatóri-Großmaskentanz und der Arischinótanz.
    Abstract: Extracts of last death cult dances performed by still free-living survivors of the Umutima people. Mask dancers, embodying souls of deceased relatives, are always male. They are accompanied by women. "Bakure" dance (flagellating dance of "forest dog"), "Hatori" dance of great masks and "Arischino" dance are shown.

    Abstract: Auf der Veranda eines Gebäudes am Zeremonialplatz versammeln sich Würdenträger in Begleitung von Frauen. Der König kommt hinzu. Vor ihnen treten Gruppen von Frauen auf, die, begleitet von Trommel- und Rasselmusik, mehrere Tänze aufführen. Dabei singen die Tänzerinnen und unterstreichen ihren Tanz z. T. durch starke Handgestik.

A great part of the film presents the dancing of the women at the royal court, probably in the course of a ceremony in front of the shrine of the royal ancestors.

    Abstract: Exzisionsfeiern. Eine Gruppe junger Mädchen wird im Rahmen eines Initiationsvorganges von einem Mann beschnitten. Nach der Operation legen Frauen den Mädchen Blätterröcke um, in denen sie mit den anderen Dorfbewohnern an einem Tanzfest teilnehmen, bevor sie sich für einen Monat vom Dorf zurückziehen. Nach einem Monat findet ein weiteres Fest statt, bei dem die reichgeschmückten Mädchen in der Frauenkleidung tanzen.
    Abstract: Girls who are ready for the excision ceremony appear with their female relatives before the specialist who will perform the operation. Once the excisions are over, the girls don dresses made of leaf material and take part in the singing and dancing which lasts the entire day. After a month of solitude another festival takes place and the excised girls now wear the dresses of women.

    Abstract: Am Anfang der Trockenzeit tanzen zwischen den Hütten und dem Maskenhaus des Sommerdorfes Jatobá zwei Maskenpaare: Im Maskenhaus legen die Burschen die dreiteilige Maskenkleidung an, tanzen wiederholt singend und Rasseln schlagend paarweise auf das Dorf zu und kehren zurück. Frauen tanzen den Masken entgegen. Anschließend bereiten sie Essen für die Burschen im Maskenhaus. Vor dem Beginn der Feldarbeiten sammeln mehrere Männer Honig. Dann erfolgen die Abschlußtänze.
    Abstract: Spaced from each other the summer huts and the mask-house of the Javahé-village Jatobá are standing on a sandbank in a small river on the Bananal Island. Inside the mask-house several young men put on mask-dresses. They come out. Singing and shaking a rattle the masks are dancing in pairs towards the village and then return to the mask-house. This action is repeated. Out of the huts, the women approach the masks, dance with them seperated by a few steps, facing each other, and then return to their places, followed by the masks. For the men, living in the mask-house, food is prepared and then brought to them. Towards the end of the dry season the men move to the plains, to collect honey. After this, the mask dances are continued once again for a few days.

    Abstract: Auf dem Siedlungsplatz singen und tanzen junge Frauen und Männer zusammen drei Fatele. Der Männerchor schlägt mit der flachen Hand den Rhythmus auf den Sitzmatten. Nach einmaligem Singen stehen die hinter dem Chor sitzenden Mädchen auf, ordnen sich in doppelter Linie und tanzen synchron mit genau festgelegten Bewegungen.

Apart from the dance movements, we are shown the typical, rich clothing and body adornments. Das Grab wird verschlossen, und ein Tonkrug ohne Boden wird daraufgesetzt. Von der Leiche führt ein Seil nach oben durch den Krug, womit durch ein entsprechendes Zeichen der Geister die Todesursache geklärt werden soll.

Nach dem Anbringen aller Ornamente werden die Augen vorgezeichnet und ausgehoben. Anschließend wird das Kopfloch für den Maskenträger ausgehöhlt, die Maske durch Brennen geschwärzt und mit Palmöl eingerieben.
    Abstract: A tree is selected and felled, a length of timber is cut off and the measure of the mask figure is taken. Then the mask is carved. After the mask has been ornamented, the opening for the wearer of the mask is hollowed out. Finally, the mask is blackened over the fire and rubbed with palm-oil.

    Abstract: Tonmaterial wird aus einer Grube gewonnen, gemergelt, geknetet und in Ringwulsttechnik zu einem bauchigen Gefäß mit Hals aufgebaut. Als Arbeitsunterlage dient eine konkave Tonscherbe, die während des Töpferns gedreht werden kann. Ornamentiert wird der Hals des Gefäßes mit einem dünnen Wulstring sowie der Bauch in rautenförmigen, gepunkteten Feldern. Das Brennen erfolgt nach längerem Lufttrocknen in einem Brennhaufen.
    Abstract: Clay is fetched from a clay pit, tempered and kneaded and a bellied vessel with rim is built up by the coiling method. The work is done on a concave potsherd to rotate the vessel as it is shaped. The rim of the vessel is decorated with a thin roll of clay, the belly with points arranged in diamondshaped figures. After the pot has been dried for some time in the air, it is baked with other pots in a stack.

    Abstract: In einer Bauernstube in Mardorf sitzen drei Mädchen und versehen ungefärbte Eier mit geometrischen und pflanzlichen Ornamenten sowie mit Sprüchen. Zum Verzieren verwenden sie flüssiges Bienenwachs und Schreibfedern. Die Eier werden in heiße Farbbrühe getaucht. Anschließend wird das Wachs mit einem weichen Tuch abgerieben. Die Ornamente erscheinen weiß auf farbigem Grund.
    Abstract: In a farmhouse in Mardorf three girls decorate eggs with geometric or plant ornaments and with sayings using liquid beeswax and pens. The eggs are dipped into hot dye. Afterwards the wax is rubbed off with a smooth cloth. The ornaments occur white on a coloured ground.

    Abstract: Begleitet von Trommeln und Gongs tanzen Angehörige des Glockenbundes auf dem Zeremonialplatz des Dorfes Agwada zu Ehren der heiligen Buschkuh. Die Knaben und jungen Männer bewegen sich in Paaren oder größeren Gruppen hintereinander über den Platz, vollführen Körperdrehungen und schwingen dabei große Glocken und Zibetkatzenfelle als Symbole der heiligen Buschkuh. Aufgenommen mit 16 B/s; Vorführgeschw. 18 B/s.
    Abstract: The young men and boys of the Afo village of Agwada perform a dance with original movements, steps, and jumps to the accompaniment of drums and gongs. As the dancers move in a snake-like row they swing large iron bells and civet cat pelts as symbols of the sacred bush cow, their protectoral power. The performance is intended to make the bush cow happy and to drive evil spirits away. Recording speed 16 fps, projection speed 18 fps.

    Abstract: Vor den zu verrichtenden Opfern wird das Orakel befragt. Nach Ankündigung der Opfer durch eine Trompete werden am Margai-Altar Hühner und Hirsebier geopfert. Das restliche Bier wird von den Anwesenden getrunken. Eine andere Opferhandlung zeigt einen Margai-Priester, der ein Bieropfer darbringt. Die Margai (Naturgeister) werden durch weibliche Medien befragt, die sich in tranceartigem Zustand befinden.
    Abstract: Shows scenes of a sacrifice at a Margai altar. An old man blasts a sacred trumpet in order to announce the ceremony, while women brew the millet beer necessary for the proceedings. A father and two grown sons pray at the altar, then sacrifice chickens. The containers on the altar are filled with the millet beer; the rest of the beverage is drunk by the men in attendance, and the priest performs a beer offering.

    Abstract: Zur Vorbereitung auf ein Tanzfest im Dorf Isangi wird ein Ileke, ein Viereck mit dichten Palmblattwänden, als Aufenthaltsort für die Tänzer und die Nkúmú-Figur errichtet. Am Festtag werden weitere Vorbereitungen getroffen, ehe das Fest mit einer Ansprache des Patriarchen eröffnet wird. Danach treten zahlreiche Gruppen von Tänzern und Tänzerinnen auf, die ihre Vorführungen von unterschiedlichem Schwierigkeitsgrad und hohem Symbolgehalt darbieten.

    Abstract: Nach dem Eintanzen des Festplatzes mit einem Vergnügungstanz wird der einzusetzende Batwá-Häuptling, zeremoniell gekleidet, vom Versammlungshaus abgeholt. Die Männer von Isangi und Wenga führen einen pantomimischen Tanz auf, der eine kriegerische Handlung darstellt. Dazwischen findet der Nkúmú-Tanz statt, den die Dorfhäuptlinge und der Botika (Botsika) gemeinsam tanzen. Am Ende des Festes werden Ansprachen gehalten, und es wird über die Zahlung der Festgebühren verhandelt.
    Abstract: The Ekonda have adopted from their neighbours, the Bolia and Ntómbá, the institution of the "sacred" chieftain, and this also includes the Batwá. The film shows the closing stages of the festive installation of a chieftain of the Batwá.

    Abstract: Im zweiten Abschnitt des Tanzfestes in Isangi finden weitere Aufführungen verschiedener Tanzgruppen statt. Zunächst tanzen die Frauen, dann die Männer. Dabei werden einige Palmblätter des Ileke entfernt. Zum Schluß werden die Wände völlig abgebaut, so daß die Nkúmú-Figur für alle sichtbar wird.

    Abstract: Tonabbau mit Spitzhacke; Transport. Aufbereitung: Wässern und Kneten mit der Maschine; Einlagern der Tonwülste; zweites Durchkneten auf der Töpferbank mit den Handballen. Formen eines Wasserkruges mit Henkel auf der Töpferscheibe. Nach dem Bemalen mit weißen Mustern wird der Krug mit anderem Töpfergut zusammen gebrannt.
