Kurzfassung: Set in a theoretical perspective of time the dissertation focuses on how deviant behavior of adolescents is structured by subjective perception of time and socially-managed time frameworks. Accordingly, the first chapters survey sociological theories of time. The main focus of the dissertation is on the reconstruction of individual time schemes. Based on a longitudinal study, the dissertation deals with relevant attitudes and everyday conduct as well as process patterns and consequences in the context of changeover of status from school to occupation. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of boredom and how it is dealt with. In conclusion the meaning of socially-managed time is summarized in relation to deviant behavior.

Kurzfassung: Against the background of a disappearing East German state - a historic event which affected all generations to varying degrees – this study examines the effect that prevailing conditions and the resultant functioning of individuals within the social structure had on people’s approaches to childrearing and to individuality and subordination. The study focuses on three generations whose life courses were or still are closely linked with two world wars, the post-war economic miracle, the division of Germany and major economic and socio-structural changes within Germany. Distinctions are also made between East and West Germany. The three generations are on the one hand described within their respective historical contexts, and on the other examined in the light of the prominent socialisation theories of their time. These include the authoritarianism theory of the Frankfurt School, the theory of class-specific socialisation by Melvin Kohn, and Ronald Inglehart’s theory of value change. These theories are treated as hypotheses, the validity of which is tested by comparing the values identified for the different generations. The family surveys carried out by the Munich-based Deutsches Jugendinstitut form the empricial basis for this work.

Kurzfassung: The history of human decapitation, featuring the story of two British engineers beheaded by rebels in modern Russia and the psychological and religious implications of contemporary headhunting in Borneo. The Forbidden Rites trilogy explores cannibalism, head hunting and human sacrifice. This series includes first-hand accounts, expert interviews, and rarely seen footage. It reveals the legends behind man-eating tribes, headhunters in jungles of Ecuador and sheds light on the link between human sacrifice and salvation. The series looks at rituals considered important and acceptable to one society but regarded, particularly in the West, as unacceptable and even abhorrent. The aim is to look at the differences and get explanations from practitioners in other societies as to why such rituals worked for them.

Kurzfassung: After more than a quarter of a century without any form of religious ceremony, the Na, an ethnic group living on the Himalayan plateau, began openly practising their religion again in the early 1990s. Their priests are called daba. Among the few old shamans who are still living today, Dafa Luzo is the most remarkable. As the main character in the film, we see him looking after his farm and his family, as well as performing rituals to expel all unclean spirits and demons and honour the ancestors. His main worry, and his greatest hope, is to make sure his knowledge is safely handed down to the next generation.

Kurzfassung: For twenty years, Camh has lived in North Vietnam, unable to return to his home in the south, a small fishing village where his wife waits for him. She has been a guerrilla fighter for the triumphant communist forces, and has made a living selling food in the market. She is happy to reunite with her husband until she learns that he has married a young woman in the north and has a child by her. The love triangle becomes more complicated: Huy, a man who has lost a leg is in love with Troa, who does not return his affection, and there is Hoa, a young woman who has lost both legs and who is in love with him. All of the characters' emotional injuries are as deep as those of Huy and Hoa, but they behave with great kindness towards one another. The movie was made for $36,000, but the lack of special effects allows us to concentrate on the difficulties of reunification and of finding both political and psychic peace. Winner of national prizes - Golden Lotus for Best Picture, Best Director, Best actress, Asia Pacific Film Festival for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Film, and Special Prize, Amiens Int'l Film Festival.

Kurzfassung: This video documents the over-modeling in clay of a real human skull in Lae, Papua New Guinea, in the spring of 1997. A painted skull had been purchased from a trader. When Adam Kone visited, he found the skull poorly decorated and set out to mold a more elaborate skull-portrait, adding modern materials, in his friend's house. Asked to sculpt in the garden, he refused. Adam had nothing to do with the dead person, but was weary of head hunting suspicions, and feared arrest. Historically, skull art is associated with tribal warfare and headhunting, banned by the colonial administration in the 1920's, and equally outlawed in modern independent Papua New Guinea. Because of its association with a banned practice, skull art has become rare and is carried out in secrecy. In Adam's home on the Sepik, decorating skulls is a prominent, highly developed form of body art. A skull-portrait commemorates an initiate's first kill, a great warrior, a fierce enemy, an extraordinary, or beautiful person. The portrait honors a deceased person - friend or foe - and is held in high esteem. Sepik societies are known for their artistic wealth, but also as fierce warriors. The Iatmul people of the middle Sepik are the most prominent. Headhunting was once their major pastime, indulged like a sport, and feared by their neighbors. Among these warriors, killing an enemy was regarded an adult man's duty, a source of male pride, and a symbol of masculine identity. Ritualized homicide was part of initiation. Skull art belongs to the spirit house, Haus Tambaran. Adult men spend most of their time there. Only fully initiated, adult men are allowed into the men's house. The Haus Tambaran is the venue for all major male activities, including meetings, artistic exploits, religious rituals, and initiation ceremonies. Several long stones in front of the Haus Tambaran once served as sacred locations where a slain enemy's head was ritually severed from his body. Warriors' heads once provided the physical and spiritual foundations of Sepik society and its spirit houses. Skulls were buried under a Haus Tambaran's major supporting posts, adorned its cornices and windows, were kept inside on special shelves and skull racks, displayed, and carried around on special dance wards during funerary rites. An adorned skull commemorates and honors a dead person. Some have linked skull art to masking. Others have observed that skull art is quite realistic. Historic skulls-portraits capture individuals' real life features.

Kurzfassung: Ten years after he made Kafi's Story, director Arthur Howes returns to the Sudan to find the members of the Nuba who featured in his earlier documentary film. Soon after he had left the Sudan, the mountain area they had been living in became the battlefield of the civil war that has been destroying much of the Sudan ever since. With a government that is attempting to gain absolute control, the people of Nuba have been persecuted, deported, and deprived of much of their land. Children have been put into camps, many of them brainwashed in the military. Many of their fathers have voluntarily joined the army and are now being forced to fight their own people, as they have not been able to find any other way of making a living. Some of the Nuba people have fled to other countries, such as Ethiopia and Kenya. Groups of women have withdrawn further into the mountains. Howes, who had a great deal of difficulty obtaining a visa for the Sudan, manages to find several of the Nuba men and women he filmed back in the late eighties, and their testimonies are, without exception, revealing. He succeeds in organizing secret screenings of Kafi's Story, which they have never seen before, and the contrast between their lives then and now is shocking. It is rare to hear stories collected from so deeply within a community. Howes gives his personal perspective during much of his commentary.

Kurzfassung: This multi-layered portrait examines San Francisco filmmaker Ruby Yang's childhood home in its first year of postcolonial existence. In 1997, as the long-anticipated handover of the city from British rule to Chinese authority was about to occur, Yang returned to see the transition for herself. Instead of mirroring mainstream news reporting, Yang intimately explores the everyday lives of the people of Hong Kong, showing how the city's ever changing dynamics and energy shaped them. CITIZEN HONG KONG does this by intimately following five individuals who represent a diverse cross section of Hong Kong youth.

Kurzfassung: This dissertation contributes to the important theme of discussion, analysing the transformational development of the political, administrative and sociological effects and their impact on cultural aspects, with regards to the reunification and reintegration process in East Germany. East Berlin borough administrative bodies have been used as examples to research the course of their transformation from a "socialist, to a classical (west) European administration" (Klaus König). This work centres around the question of how the personnel coped with the orientation, which in the GDR was socialist, survived the process of radical institutional change, and how far such "legacies" (Hellmut Wollmann) provide reasons for differences in the orientation of the personnel in the boroughs of West Berlin. For this reason, the author has reconstructed the typical GDR-orientations in the field of Youth-Work-Administration (Analysis of files and documents, oral-history interviews), which stand in opposition, with the help of a five dimensional scheme, to the administrative character of West Germany. A comparative analysis follows making use of qualitative and quantitative methods regarding recruitment development orientation of the personnel through a comparison of the Social and Youth-Work administrative bodies of East and West Berlin boroughs. In conclusion, the author develops hypotheses regarding (administrative-) cultural aspects of the integration process of the East Berlin borough administrations, and places these in context with the course of the East German transformation.

Kurzfassung: Management and Cooperation in Research Libraries of Berlin The present work addresses an increasingly important-but hitherto largely neglected-topic in library science, in the field of information and communication, and among professional librarians: vertical social interaction in the research library as a work system. The intention behind this study was to find out in what way interaction between managers and their subordinates is linked to the latter group's job performance and innovativeness. With pressure to change and innovate being steadily increased by reduced subsidies, dwindling resources, growing customer demands for efficiency and quality service, and headlong technological change such as digitalization and networking, this dissertation presents an inquiry into the ability of this type of informational facility to function. Change and innovation are not understood in this analysis only as technological modernization and are not reduced to technical or merely formal organizational measures. Instead, the focus is on the actors and their attitudes, social behavior on the job, and perceptions. Research results from a variety of disciplines (especially industrial and organizational sociology, management theory, human-factors engineering, and communication sciences) provided the systematic, theoretical basis for describing and analyzing the social interaction that takes place within an organization. Communication, participation, autonomy, conflict, motivation, and cooperation were identified as the basic constituents of those dynamics in research libraries. Theoretically and empirically, the work climate served as the appropriate indicator of the socioemotional quality of interaction and was the link between managers' behavior, social interaction, and achievement of the organization's purpose. A historical review of library science and communication shows that only a few far-sighted librarians, such as Joachim Stoltzenburg, quickly recognized and discussed key components of development and their implications for library management. Articulating the social and sociological dimension of these facets, such thinkers argued against the Zeitgeist and prevailing consensus of their contemporaries in the profession. Apart from such efforts, however, social interaction in the library as a work system has continued to be a subject largely ignored in discussions of "reform" in this area, an exchange that has been meager in other respects as well. For reasons of quality control, a number of methods were used in the empirical part of the study. The survey itself consisted of both qualitative and quantitative elements in order to lay a broad, solid basis for generating and interpreting results. To ensure that the data was as realistic and well-founded as possible, the principle of comparing subjective and objective perception was observed by having managers assess themselves in addition to having them assessed by their colleagues. The study's regional scope and sharply defined subject of investigation made it possible to conduct a representative survey that included nearly every library of this type in the federal state of Berlin, Germany. At the highest level of aggregation, data analysis showed a distinct demarcation between two worlds of work: one in libraries with an agreeable working atmosphere, the other in libraries with an average or poor working atmosphere. In answer to the central question of which management style is best able to enhance the job performance and innovativeness of the participants, it was found that their commitment to, identification with, and innovativeness on behalf of "their" organization was greatly conditioned by the managers' transparent, communicative, participatory behavior, ability to interact and cooperate as equals with their subordinates in professional matters, observance of their formal authority, explicit meritocratic and innovation-minded behavior when accompanied by appropriate targets, andsensitivity to and ability to deal with conflict. Irrespective of these findings on work climate, it was generally true that most of the nonmanagerial employees in the study performed activities characterized by very segmented processing of materials and an orientation to office work. They had decidedly liberal working conditions and wide latitude to organize their own, albeit narrowly circumscribed, sphere of work, but they had little opportunity for advancement or material gratification. Nevertheless, their intrinsic motivation was high. Regardless of work climate, the scope for action by the managers in the study was severely restricted by structural factors (rigid work systems, public service) and budgetary constraints (low level of investment). Ultimately, the study is a call to change the paradigm of the way in which contemporary functional management activity is understood in the field of research libraries and related service areas. It is essential for managerial competence to be grasped as a blend of technical, managerial, and social expertise. The implications for both research management and practice in libraries in general are that social competencies and skills for perceiving and performing managerial functions should be systematically developed in a professional manner, made part of basic and advanced training, and routinely practiced in research libraries.

Kurzfassung: The study investigates how educational systems determine the patterns of intragenerational mobility in different societies as well as the patterns of social action. "Credentialist" and "noncredentialist" societies are distinguished according to the degree of standardization, stratification, vertical and horizontal differentiation of their educational systems. It is assumed that educational titles have a strong impact on occupational allocation in credentialist societies, leading to a low degree of intragenerational social mobility. Since educational titles cannot be used as "screening devices" in noncredentialist countries, intragenerational mobility is expected to be higher in these countries. The extent of intragenerational mobility can be viewed as an indicator of the degree of closure of occupational positions in a given society. In "closed positions", "positional rents" can be generated, thus privileges and disadvantages are more strongly connected with occupational positions in credentialist countries than in noncredentialist. Therefore, collective actions to challenge or to defend privileges are more likely in credentialist societies. These hypotheses are tested for six countries using data of the "International Social Justice Project" (1991). It can be shown that intragenerational mobility as well as the structuration of attitudes are more pronounced in the credentialist countries Poland and West Germany than in the noncredentialist countries USA and Russia. East Germany and the United Kingdom are located between these two groups of societies.

Kurzfassung: The first visible outcome of the fertility process is the birth of the first child. The first birth marks a woman's transition into motherhood. It plays a significant role in the future life of each individual woman and has a direct relationship with fertility. The age at which child bearing begins influences the number of children a woman bears throughout her reproductive period in the absence of any active fertility control. For countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where contraceptive use is relatively low, younger ages at first birth tend to boost the number of children a woman will have. However, even when family planning is widespread, the timing of first births can affect completed family size if contraception is used for spacing but not for limiting fertility. The birth of a child is an event of great social and individual significance and its importance is recognised in all human societies. It signifies the transition of a couple into a new social status, i.e. parenthood with its related expectations and responsibilities. It marks the sexual and social maturity of the mother and the visible consummation of sexual intercourse . The relationship between age at first birth and overall fertility in developing countries is generally an underdeveloped area as far as demographic research is concerned. Fertility analysts generally assume that child bearing only occurs within marriage. Then they treat age at first marriage to be a major proximate determinant of fertility. This assumption might have been true in most traditional societies, where births out of wedlock were not accepted and virginity was a prerequisite for marriage. This assumption, however, does not hold true in modern times, where a large number of children is born outside marriage. These facts have been the major motive of conducting the current research. This study examines the reproductive behaviour of Tanzanian women. The study found the average age at first sexual intercourse to be 16 years; age at first marriage to be 17 years, while average age at first child bearing was estimated to be 18 years. By age 15, almost 10 percent of juvenile women have given birth. This study furthermore found that 41 percent of all first live births resulted from premarital conceptions. Out-of-wedlock births account for 24 percent of all first births in Tanzania according to the 1996 TDHS. The education of a woman, place of residence, and religion play the greatest roles in influencing age at first birth in Tanzania. The striking results were place of residence as it was found that rural residents have a higher mean age at first birth than women living in Dar es Salaam. Dar es Salaam women has the lowest mean age at first birth. Moslems have lower age at first birth than Catholics. There is also a strong relationship between age at first birth and age at first intercourse also with infant and child mortality. The results indicate that the younger the age of the mother at the birth of the first child, the higher the chances that the child dies. The study of current levels and trends of fertility showed that, on the average, a Tanzanian woman bears 6 children. Between the 1960s and early 1980s, an average of 7 births per woman prevailed in Tanzania. The declining fertility in Tanzania was confirmed by the analysis of the decomposition of the change of the total fertility rate (TFR) between two TDHSs. It found that natural fertility control is being gradually replaced by contraceptive use although the percentage of women using contraception is still very low. The reduction in infant and child mortality, rising numbers of women attending schools, and a rise in age at first birth are among the factors responsible for the decline in fertility in Tanzania. Education on the other hand has played a major role in raising age at first birth. Education either delays first intercourse and subsequently birth as pregnant schoolgirls are prohibited to attend formal schools or it effects the acceptance of contraception to delay first conception. Specifically, this study establish that there is an inverse relationship between age at first birth and fertility. Marriage is a weak factor in explaining fertility in Tanzania. Women in polygamous unions had fewer number of children ever born than those in monogamous unions in Tanzania. Moslems have a lower fertility than Catholics. Women residing in urban areas have fewer children than those in the rural areas. Women's education is the strongest predictor of the use of contraceptives in Tanzania. Catholic women are less likely to use contraceptives than Moslems. Tanzanian women residing in rural areas are less likely to use contraception than their counterparts residing in urban areas. Although age at first birth did not show any significance, age at first intercourse, age at first marriage and current age are highly related to contraceptive use. Variation in age at first sexual intercourse; marriage; and birth, and the extent of practising contraception are found to depend mainly on religion, place of residence, and the age of a woman. It is important therefore to design separate programmes to raise age at first birth and to lower fertility according to the findings related to religion, place of residence, and target juvenile women separately.

Kurzfassung: This Master thesis presents the results of an empirical study carried out in 1997 in Berlin researching into the social and religious dimension of marriage for young second generation Turkish women in Germany. It looks into the question whether marriage has a religious component for Turkish women of this migrant generation or whether it merely is a part of the usual stages of the course of life they are obliged to follow by the Turkish society. Taking into account the social and religious background of the 13 interviewees the single steps of a Turkish marriage from the 'promise' (söz) to the wedding are analysed in terms of their social and religious relevance for these women. The example of the marriage of Muslim women who were socialised in Germany can contribute to finding out where religion ranks in the daily life of Turkish migrant women. From this it is also possible to draw conclusions about the character of Islam in Germany.

Their originality consists in using the ‘invisible theatre’ method in order to surprise the public and thus make it react itself to its own problems. This documentary shows how a local theatre company efficiently uses fiction to problematise today’s African reality. This film presents two performances, one criticises the current proliferation of religious sects, the other deals with the awakening of villagers towards AIDS.
Kurzfassung: This thesis focuses on the effect of early retirement on the lives of East Germans, the function of this aspect of institutional transfer and its consequences for the job market and socio-political structures. The term coined by the author to describe this process is "prescribed retirement". Comprehensive empirical analysis based on a theoretical model has been used to demonstrate in subjective, biographical terms how "prescribed retirement" is experienced and dealt with within the problematical context of German unification. This account shows clearly that, while generating a uniform set of institutional norms, the institutional transfer necessitated by unification has also served to produce and heighten differences in mentality between the respective citizens of the two former German states. In his conclusions, the author has set up a theoretically based and empirically differentiated typology of cultural patterns of action and withdrawal. His account demonstrates the many ways in which human lives can be linked with the history of the system. The obvious conclusion is that in view of the modernisation process, the problems of the welfare state will necessitate an increased contribution from its members in terms of effort, re-arrangement and responsibility.

The 'Baga Guinee,' a band of ten women aged between 25 and 40, is performing at weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies raising eyebrows in this tradition-laden country.Their rising popularity is a source of problems at home, with husbands and large families complaining about their constant traveling and demanding performance schedule. So how do these Baga women manage to match their traditional family life with the requirements of a musical career?

Kurzfassung: Adapted from the novel Black Steed by Zhang Chengzhi (who spent four years during the Chinese Cultural Revolution with an Inner Mongolian family), A Mongolian Tale begins with two children being raised by Nai Nai, a wise grandmother, in the peaceful purity of childhood and the Mongolian steppes. Xie Fei's storytelling is simple and resonates with dignity. The spacious, traditional world of the steppe people is an idyllic landscape that seems timeless. Yet this is no fairytale but the story of childhood sweethearts separated by a changing world. Beiyinbulog, a boy whose father has left him to be raised by Nai Nai, has to leave Somiya, her shepherd grandmother's helper, when his father summons him to train in veterinary science in the city. When he returns for her as a folksinger, three years later, he finds her circumstances radically changed. As adults the two find their true destinies and the hand that fate has dealt. How do we redeem our idyllic dreams dashed by realities? Can love and acceptance be found despite betrayal and loss? Beiyinbulog is played by Tengger, a Mongolian-born pop singer and composer who composed the film's haunting, nostalgic score. His songs in the film capture the future for the children of the Mongolian steppes and the virtuous legacy of their homeland - 'the vast and boundless grasslands are the cradle I was reared in.' Awards/Festivals: Best Director, Best Artistic Contribution, Tengger's Music, Montreal World Film Festival; Best Director, Shanghai Film Critics Awards.

Kurzfassung: Set in a rice-growing village in Vietnam, this is a tale of crossroads where stories flow together like small rivers of sorrow. 17-year-old Nham has left school to care for his widowed mother, his little sister Minh, and his sister-in-law Ngu. Ngu, whose husband left to work in a coal mine five years ago and has only come home twice for a few days, lives in daily sadness and with a deep longing for him and a complete life. Nham and his family are visited by Quyen, who has come from America to revisit the village where she was raised by her aunt, Nham's relative. Quyen shares her nostalgia for her childhood with Nham as she remembers the places and the life she left before leaving her bad marriage. As Nham befriends her, his sexuality is awakened by her attractive personality and vivacious good looks. Ngu sees this attention being paid to Quyen by Nham and harbors a quiet jealousy. As Nham opens to his sexual feelings, his embarrassment drives him from Quyen but his sexuality is further awakened by innocent comfort given to Ngu. Nostalgia for the Countryside sweeps us through strong emotions as we experience the characters' heartbreaks and sorrows.

Kurzfassung: U-Wei Bin Haji Saari based The Arsonist (1995) on William Faulkner's short story Barn Burning, transposing it from the Deep South to Malaysia. The filmmaker stays true to its core, but depicts the position of a Javanese man who has married a Malaysian woman, and is continually in a state of rebellion. His family is isolated from the community, and their life is continually disrupted. They are often reduced to camping out in the open with their goats. His middle son admires his courage, but asks himself if his honor demands him to stop his father from ruining himself and their family. The movie premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival, and went on to be the most honored Malaysian film in history, selected in Cannes, and winning the Grand Prize (Best International Film) at the Brussels Film Festival. Other Festivals: Nominated Silver Lion Best Short Film Venice Film Festival 2004; Los Angeles International Short Film Festival 2004.

Kurzfassung: The Uprising of '34 is a startling documentary which tells the story of the General Strike of 1934, a massive but little-known strike by hundreds of thousands of Southern cotton mill workers during the Great Depression. The mill workers' defiant stance — and the remarkable grassroots organizing that led up to it — challenged a system of mill owner control that had shaped life in cotton mill communities for decades. Sixty years after the government brutally suppressed the strike, a dark cloud still hangs over this event, spoken of only in whispers if at all. Through the voices of those on all sides, The Uprising of '34 paints a rare portrait of the dynamics of life in mill communities, offering a penetrating look at class, race, and power in working communities throughout America and inviting the viewer to consider how those issues affect us today. The film raises critical questions about the critical role of history in making democracy work today. A thoughtful exploration of the paternalistic relationship between mill management and its employees, the relationship between black and white workers, and the impact of the New Deal on the lives of working people, The Uprising of '34 is “meant to challenge the myths that Southern workers can't be organized, that they will work for nothing, and that they hate unions,” says Stoney. More than a social document, the film is intended to spark discussion on class, race, economics, and power — issues as vital today as they were 77 years ago. “This is more than a story about a strike; it's a story about community. We went out of our way to make sure that we didn't make a 'which side are you on' film,” says Helfand. “The thrust of this film is to give the workers their chance to speak,” adds Rostock. “We're very proud of the fact that here's a film in which they speak for themselves [with no narrator].

Kurzfassung: Literally translated, the title means 'The Moon Pierced by Wild Grass,' and the film tells the story of the relationship between an aged traditional song teacher named Waluyo, his folk music disciple Ilalang (who has to cope with memories of his abusive father) and the lovely dancer Bulan, who Ilalang has loved for a long time. The feature is set in Solo, where the vestiges of feudal Javanese culture can still be found, and gamelan music is heard throughout. It is an intensely emotional meditation upon the relationship between the generations and the role of music in the search for recovery from a traumatic past and for identity in an uncertain present. Director Garin Nugroho, who has described himself as 'a Javanese living amidst multiculturalism,' and who celebrates Indonesian cultural diversity in such films as A Poet, here explores Javanese culture. He sees this film as 'encompassing at the same time refinement and cruelty, softness and tyranny, and a beauty based on feudalism.' Awards/Festivals: Best Director Award, Nantes International Film Festival. Special Jury Prize at the Nantes Three Continent Film Festival.

Kurzfassung: From the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century to the climbing cancer rate of our time; from the colossal scale of New York City's aqueduct and water tunnels to the water wars of the West; from the dangers of chemical contamination to the water politics of Polanski's film Chinatown, Water and the Dream of the Engineers explores both the engineers' dreams for, and public fears about, the world we have inherited. This is a fascinating documentary where rich social history frames a spirited debate between David Brower (former Sierra Club President), biologist Barry Commoner, and Able Wolman (dean of American Sanitary Engineering). The film's wider context is provided by the frustrations and concerns of those who maintain and use our water systems in the present day. The film is an educational odyssey about engineering, environmentalism, and the troubled relations between these two traditions. Most importantly, Water and the Dream of the Engineers reveals that conflicts over technology and the environment are, at root, debates about power and the promise of democracy.

Kurzfassung: Through the words and lives of two families, the first of these companion films, made for Granada Television's Disappearing World series, examines change in two villages of southern China near Wuxi. One of these families, the Dings, are obviously influential members of the community and the parents have lived in the area of what is now called Big Ding Village all their lives. The other family, the Jues, live in a more traditional and rural Wong Jong Commune. Constantly the film compares life for these families before and after the Communist Revolution in 1949. Mrs Ding remembers her bitter childhood, the near infanticide of her fifth sister because as a girl the baby could only be a burden to the already over-extended family. Both the Dings and the Jues discuss the brutality of the Japanese, how the Japanese stole crops, how Mrs Ding's father hid her in the woodpile to save her from rape and possible murder by Japanese soldiers. The families recount their initial fear of the Communist Army, then their growing excitement for the ideals of the Party after the Revolution. They discuss the factions and fear of the Cultural Revolution, and the one Ding son who joined the Red Guards remembers his excitement on seeing Mao. He doesn't discuss the violence he may have helped create during these months as a Red Guard, although Mrs Ding hints at the dangers of giving any criticism of government policy during that period. More intimate revelations broadcast over national television could have been dangerous for the interviewees; the film-makers are to be commended for their portrayal, creating a picture of the individual in China while at the same time protecting that individual's privacy. The historical perspective sets the stage for the current prosperity of the villages and the families. The film-makers make clear that Wuxi, an area where prosperity and the success of the new economic policies after the Cultural Revolution are evident, was the Chinese government's choice not theirs, yet within that confine, they were given complete freedom in their filming. Individual memories compare a past of hunger and want, with present material consumption, a bride's dowry valued at 700 yuan, and new homes. The rights of women have improved: Mrs Ding is a Production Team Leader and a silkworm expert, while Mrs Jue makes money by working the family's alloted land. The interactions within each family are clearly drawn, and by the end of the film, we feel a closeness with these families, for all they have known and for the hope they have for their future.

Schlagwort(e): Kazakhs ; North America ; Documentary films.
Kurzfassung: The Kazakhs of Xinjiang (Sinkiang) are one of the fifty-five national minorities that now live within the borders of the People's Republic of China. The policy of the Chinese Communist Party toward these people has been one of Sinofication, a neutralization of 'reactionary' local leaders and an alliance of Han Chinese with the indigenous culture. Xinjiang is a particularly sensitive area for the Chinese because of the traditional ties of the Kazakh with the Soviet Union. In 1962, some 50,000 Kazakhs and other non-Han peoples sought refuge in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Since then, the Sino-Soviet border has been closed, and until recently the entire area was off-limits to non-Chinese outsiders. This film offers unique ethnographic material about the Kazakh, as well as about Chinese policies in the years following the Cultural Revolution. The film follows the movement of the family of Abdul Gair, illustrated the cycles and tensions of present day Kazakhs, mixes detail of their traditional life as herders with suggestion of the effect of Chinese rule. The Chinese government allowed the filmmakers freedom to choose the subjects and people for the interviews and action sequences. Because of this, the film expresses, to a great extent, the view of the filmmaker, not of the Chinese government. Against a background of the Tienshan Mountains, the Kazakhs are shown branding yaks, milking mares, drinking kumis (fermented mare's milk), making their yearly move from winter to summer quarters, and setting up their felt-covered summer tents. Then, through the trip of Ahmed the production team leader to the brigade headquarters, the film portrays the relations between Kazakh and Han, showing the brigade's authority. Rather than livestock, formerly a mark of wealth being owned for individual profit, production and gain is now controlled by the brigade leaders. Women are given more freedom within the community. Kazakh children now have an opportunity for education in the Kazakh language, but the teaching is largely Party doctrine; they have health care, but this again is Chinese. Yet, despite pre-1977 restrictions on local religion and nomadic culture, and although Abdul Gair is himself a Party member, the Chinese do not, as yet, control the Kazakh. The Kazakh have retained their horses, not only as wealth, but as a means of freedom. Here, as in other cultures where a strong centralized government controls a minority, the continued cultural independence of the Kazakh is an open question. The Chinese policy is currently to move as many Han as possible from the overcrowded central areas of China to the less populated border areas such as Xinjiang. This film gives an understanding, not only of a Kazakh society, but also insights into current change, of the conflicts of domination and independence.

Kurzfassung: As retailers, wholesalers, and negotiators, Asante women of Ghana dominate the huge Kumasi Central Market amid the laughter, argument, colour and music. The crew of this 'Disappearing World' film have jumped into the fray, explored, and tried to explain the complexities of the market and its traders. The success of this crew is impressive. As the film was to be about women traders, an all female film crew was selected and the rapport between the two groups of women is remarkable. The relationship was no doubt all the stronger because the anthropologist acting as advisor to the crew, Charlotte Boaitey, is herself an Asante. The people open up for the interviewers telling them about their lives as traders, about differences between men and women, their perception of their society and also about marriage. The women control the market through Queen Mothers who are leaders of particular sections of the market such as the yam or tomato sections. Generally these Queen Mothers are elected by the traders. However, Oba, the Plantain Queen Mother acquired her position through influence and because of this she has less control over her workers and over the resolution of differences. Market traders work long hours, make less than a shoe clerk or office worker yet the rewards for them can be many. The residual matrilineal system of Asante society means that inheritance moves from a man to his sister's children. The result is that an Asante woman is left with no means of support if her husband dies. The traders have gone to work to protect themselves against this possibility, to pay for their children's education and to maintain their independence. Implicit in this analysis of women traders is the relationship between men and women in Asante society. Marriage is polygamous and the crew interview women about their feelings on marriage and of their hopes of coming marriages. The film portrays the influence women have in the market as a direct contrast to their position in the home. Interviews with several husbands reveal, perhaps not surprisingly, that their perception of women differs from the women's perception of themselves. The men talk of the importance of having two wives, one to serve when the other is tired; one to grant sexual favours while the other is menstruating; each to compete with the other for male attention thus allowing the husband to retain control. Although the men accept a woman earning extra money, they still say a woman should be submissive and serve men. The women regard themselves as assertive, capable, and in control. Interviews with two young women demonstrate a desire for equality in the home. The film's analysis is a sympathetic one and full of insight. The focus is, though, rather narrowly on the husband-wife relationship and women's important relationships with their female and male kin are given little attention.

Schlagwort(e): Ethnology ; Kwegu (African people) ; Ethiopia Social life and customs. ; Ethiopia. ; Australia ; Documentary films.
Kurzfassung: 'The Kwegu' is an entirely tasteful and dignified presentation of the harsh realities of subsistence living, and it may help us understand how, even in stateless societies, dominated groups come to accept their domination as part of the natural order. The Kwegu are hunters and cultivators who live along the banks of the River Omo in Southwestern Ethiopia. They are experts on the river, manipulating their dugout canoes through a swift current where falling overboard could mean delivery into the jaws of a crocodile. The Mursi are cattle herders and cultivators who live with the Kwegu for several months of the year. This film is about the relationship between these two groups of people. The Mursi number about 5,000 and the Kwegu about 500. Both groups cultivate flood land along the Omo during the dry season, when the Mursi may also bring their cattle to the river. But the Kwegu keep themselves separate from the Mursi; they speak their own language among themselves, although they are bilingual and communicate with the Mursi only in Mursi. When the Mursi and Kwegu share a village, the Kwegu houses usually form a separate cluster. When a Kwegu marries, a vital part of the bridewealth is livestock. But since the Kwegu do not keep cattle, a system of exchange has developed whereby the Kwegu perform services in exchange for Mursi cattle. In addition to providing bridewealth cattle, the Mursi patron protects 'his' Kwegu from other Mursi and acts on his behalf in bridewealth negotiations. In return the Kwegu provides his patron with honey and game meat and is available to ferry him and his family across the Omo when needed. This is a vital economic service, since the Mursi cultivate on both banks of the river and yet do not, unlike the Kwegu, live at the Omo all the year round. The Kwegu are therefore 'guardians' of the canoes as well as ferrymen. There is some debate about the nature of the Mursi-Kwegu relationship. The anthropologist advisor for the film, David Turton, sees the relationship as one of domination. The Mursi depend economically on the Kwegu more than the Kwegu do on them, and yet the Kwegu see themselves as dependent, in a different, more extreme sense, on the Mursi they cannot marry without the aid of Mursi patron. The Mursi exploit the economic services of the Kwegu through their control of Kwegu marriage. Jean Lydall, in her review of the film in RAIN (June 1982), suggests another interpretation for the exchange of services. She wonders if indeed the Kwegu are not making the Mursi 'pay through the nose' for the services they require. This film suggests that far from being second-class citizens, the Kwegu are sharp manipulators who have acquired protection and material wealth by making their services indispensable to the Mursi. Turton defended his interpretation in a reply to Lydall (RAIN, No. 51, pp. 10–12) and has more recently provided a more detailed description and analysis of the Mursi-Kwegu relationship, following the same argument as developed in the film but including much additional ethnographic information (Turton, 1986). The Kwegu won the Grand Prix du Festival at the Festival International du Film de Grand Reportage in Paris. This film is the second part of a trilogy, In Search of Cool Ground. The film is particularly recommended for courses in anthropology, African studies, patron–client relationships, ethnicity and multi-cultural studies.

Kurzfassung: 'Witchcraft among the Azande' is suitable for showing in undergraduate and graduate classes on topics of religion, philosophy, and African ethnography. It could also be stimulating to discussions of psychology and medicine. The success of the Granada series on public television in England indicates its appeal to a much wider audience as well. P. Leis Evans-Pritchard's book Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande has become a classic of both ethnography and theories of witchcraft. Now, anthropologist John Ryle and film-maker André Singer, who was himself one of Evans-Pritchard's students and has published on the Azande, have teamed together to produce the film Witchcraft among the Azande for Granada Television's Disappearing World series. Singer wanted to learn for himself the accuracy of Evans-Pritchard's analysis and to note the changes since the original fieldwork carried out between 1926 and 1930. Among the Azande, witchcraft is considered to be a major danger. They believe that witchcraft can be inherited and that a person can be a witch, causing others harm, without realising her or his influence. Because of this danger, effective means of diagnosing witchcraft are, for them, vital. One method is through the use of an oracle. Several kinds of oracles are explored in the film, the most important being benge, a poison which is fed to baby chickens. The chick's death or survival provides the oracle's answer. Azande also use benge to judge other evidence in a court before a chief. Anthropologists have long argued about the nature and significance of beliefs in witchcraft and sorcery and, more generally, about the similarities and differences between 'traditional' thought and Western science. This film treads a delicate path, exploring an explanation of reality incomprehensible to a majority of Westerners and, at the same time, trying to portray the Azande as a clear-thinking, and almost familiar group of people. In this aim the film succeeds by creating a tension whereby the oracle's answers are important to the viewers because they have become involved and are forming their own opinions about the guilt or innocence of the defendants. Zande is not a static society and much has changed since Evans-Pritchard's original fieldwork. The area filmed is influenced by Catholicism; people are Christian, but the church cannot give answers to many of the questions of the Azande people. The older people see their children abandoning traditional moral and other values. For this schism, the older people seem to blame the government more than the church as the church teaches a value system consonant with the traditional one. Yet, alongside the Christian influence and changes among the younger generation, the power of beliefs in witchcraft and oracles remains. If Singer wanted to give support to Evans-Pritchard's ethnography, he has done so with Witchcraft among the Azande.

Kurzfassung: There are twelve million Pathans. Bound by a common language, a common heritage and the unifying force of Islam, these proud and independent people do not acknowledge the geographical boundary which divides them between Afghanistan and Pakistan. This film was shot at the same time as Khyber in Pakistan, close to the Afghan border. The Pathans accept no imposed leadership, from without or from within. Their laws are the decisions of the democratic assembly of the village, known as the jirga. To disobey the jirga is to court heavy penalties against which there is no appeal. Their code of living is called pukhtunwali the way of the Pathan. At its core are the principles of hospitality, personal honour and revenge. A man will fight to the death to avenge a wrong done to himself, his family or friends or, above all, his women. The film is noteworthy for the way in which it brings out the importance of these values. Their fierce loyalty, coupled with the independence of spirit which tolerates no formal leaders, makes the Pathans a formidable enemy, as the British once found out and, more recently, the Soviet invaders of Afghanistan have discovered.
