Abstract: "Why does ethnic violence break out in some places and not others? More important, why do some governments try to prevent antiminority riots while others do nothing, or even actively encourage attacks? This book answers these questions through a detailed study of Hindu-Muslim riots in India, as well as case studies of Ireland, Malaysia, and Romania. It shows how electoral incentives at two levels interact to explain both where violence breaks out and, more importantly, why some states decide to prevent mass violence and others do not
Abstract: The electoral incentives for ethnic violence -- Explaining town-level variation in Hindu-Muslim violence: the Importance of local electoral Incentives -- State capacity explanations for Hindu-Muslim violence -- The consociational explanation for Hindu-Muslim violence -- The electoral incentives for Hindu-Muslim violence -- Party competition and Hindu-Muslim violence -- The electoral incentives for ethnic violence in comparartive perspective -- Democracy and ethnic violence.
Abstract: While developing this electoral incentives model, the author shows why several alternative explanations for ethnic violence - focusing on town-level social and economical factors, the weak capacity of the Indian state, or India's alleged lack of "consociational power sharing"--Cannot explain the observed variation in Hindu-Muslim riots."--Jacket

Abstract: This book accounts for the structural differences between 'non-creole' language varieties - such as African-American English - and their European source languages. John Holm argues that these differences resulted from 'partial restructuring', whereby some of the source languages' features were retained, but many features from the non-native speakers' language were also introduced

Abstract: In the first study of the kind, Susan Blackburn examines how Indonesian women have engaged with the state since they began to organise a century ago. Voices from the women's movement resound in these pages, posing demands such as education for girls and reform of marriage laws. The state, for its part, is shown attempting to control women. The book investigates the outcomes of these mutual claims, and the power of the state and the women's movement in improving women's lives. It also questions the effects on women of recent changes to the state, such as Indonesia's transition to democracy and the election of its first female president. The wider context is important. On some issues, like reproductive health, international institutions have been influential, and as the largest Islamic society in the world, Indonesia offers special insights into the role of religion in shaping relations between women and the state.--Publisher description

Abstract: The action theoretical approach has already proved its value as a framework for communication research, most especially in the study of media audiences and media use. The approach privileges the perspective of the acting individual but offers guidelines for connecting the subjective orientation with networks of social interaction and for treating 'behaviour' as a social process. Research within this framework takes account of the wider social context and calls for a careful combination of empirical observation and interpretation, with a corresponding diversity of methodologies.
Abstract: Main description: In his famous »Voyage Round the World«, and also in his essays »More on the Human Races and Outline for a Future History of Mankind«, Georg Forster (1754-1794) took a knowledgeable and committed stand on the central controversies of physical anthropology. In the form of a source-related reconstruction, the present study is the first to point up the allusions and references to the scientific discussion of the day to be found in these texts, and indicates Forster's position in the context of the relevant debates and controversies. Though he did not live to write the 〉new anthropology〈 that he was planning, its basic outline thus becomes discernible.

Abstract: Main description: Recent research has led to a weakening of the two classical hypotheses on the story of David's rise and a succession narrative. Instead, attention has focussed on the texts in II Samuel 1-5, which are seen as being of crucial importance for the literary genesis of the story of David. The present study reveals a first continuous account from before the time of exile, which was produced in the 7th century BC. Thus it explains David's double kingship of Israel and Juda as a proto-deuteronomistic foundation narrative from the late Age of Kings. The study closes with a sketch of the editorial history of the David narratives in II Samuel and a revision of the historical records.

Abstract: Main description: The prose legendry »Lives of the Saints« written in the Dominican monastery in Nuremberg around 1400 was the most widely disseminated vernacular legendry of the European Middle Ages. It has been handed down in almost 200 manuscripts and 33 Upper German and 8 Low German printed editions and was disseminated all over German-speaking Europe and in the Netherlands and Scandinavia. The work is a major exception among German legendries in that it does not derive primarily from Latin sources but almost exclusively from German verse and prose legends (»Passional«, »Märterbuch«, Hartmann von Aue's »Gregorius«, Ebernand von Erfurt's »Heinrich und Kunigunde«, Reinbot von Durne's »Georg« etc.). Its status was that of the major vernacular hagiographic source (for the Mastersingers, Jakob Mennel etc. as well as for artists) and its popularity made it a target for one of Luther's lampoons in 1535. This second and last volume includes an index of persons and places.

Abstract: Main description: Der vorliegende Band analysiert bisherige Bemühungen, ethnische Gruppen mit Hilfe archäologischer Funde voneinander abzugrenzen.
Abstract: Main description: This volume analyses previous attempts to delineate ethnic groupings with the help of archaeological finds. After a short review of the history of these interpretations, central concepts are examined (people, culture, race, language) and ethnological and sociological concepts of identity are adduced. Against this background, Brather undertakes a comparative description of the methodological problems of ethnic reconstructions for the period between the Iron Age and the Middle Ages, and contrasts them with interpretations from cultural, economic and social history as alternative approaches to an explanation which is closer to the sources. This structural historical analysis places the explanatory power of archaeological sources on a footing with those of literary texts.

Abstract: Main description: This collection assembles articles pursuing a programmatic combination of approaches from media studies and cultural studies. A critical discussion of rival approaches based on a purely technological perspective is used to fathom the potential available for a cultural slant on media analysis. This discussion involves the development of (a) concepts of 'cultural concretion' (ethnology), (b) ideas on a fundamental theory of transcriptiveness avoiding the pitfalls of mentalism (brain, language), (c) models for analyzing intermediality, (d) scenarios of 'media-technological superiority', (e) a 'rhetoric of novelty' in the history of the media, and (f) ideas on the significance of media discourse in the self-description of modern societies.

Abstract: "This book proposes a framework for comparative analysis of the relation between the media and the political system. Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables that have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development, the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist, and Liberal models; to explain why the media have played a different role in politics in each of these systems; and to explore the force of change that are currently transforming them. It provides a key theoretical statement about the relation between media and political systems, a key statement about the methodology of comparative analysis in political communication, and a clear overview of the variety of media institutions that have developed in the West, understood within their political and historical context."--Jacket

Abstract: Main description: This study is the first to make a systematic attempt to relate the universal theories of Niklas Luhmann (1927-1998) and Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) to one another. On the basis of a critical functional analysis of systems theory and semiotic theory, a newly designed semiotic system is proposed that displays a higher resolution and recombination potential than the individual disciplines involved. The theoretical results can be used as a foundation for dealing with concrete linguistic, literary, or sociological problems. In addition, the book can be read as an introduction to the thinking of Luhmann and Peirce.

Abstract: Main description: This work deals with the identification and integration process of immigrants in Australia and the role that religion plays in this process. Viktor Zander investigates the immigrant community of Slavic Baptists in Victoria and analyzes the relationship between ethnic and religious identities as well as their social dynamics. "Identity" and "marginality" are addressed as crucial issues for Slavic immigrants and their Australian-born children. The work is based on the author’s field-research in the Slavic Baptist community in Victoria. Key Features Second volume in relaunch of the series "Religion and Society" (RS)

Abstract: The proceedings of the conference of the same name assemble papers concentrating largely on Franco-Jewish autobiography in the last few decades. Relevant literature in English and German is also discussed. In addition, three Italian authors of autobiographies comment on their own works. The theoretical reflection undertaken in the volume either accompanies the analysis of individual works or takes a broader view. It centres (a) on the relationship between autobiography and 'auto-fiction', and (b) on the fundamental issue of what we precisely mean when we speak of 'Jewish autobiographies'

Abstract: Review text: "At war with words contains many excellent essays, including important contributions by prominent scholars, but the wide range of material included means that the book will likely be remembered more for its individual parts than for their sum. Taken together, these books lay the foundation for research into questions that, unfortunately, seem more pressing with each passing day."Kerim Friedman in: Language in Society 4-2005
Abstract: Main description: As we enter a new era of global conflict involving non-state actors, At War with Words offers a provocative perspective on the role of language in the genesis, conduct and consequence of mass violence. Internationally known contributors provide original data and new insights that illuminate roles of text and talk in creating identities of enemies, justifications for violence, and accompanying propaganda. Incorporating contexts from around the world, this collection's topics range from a radio talk show host's inflammatory rhetoric to the semantic poverty of the lexicon of mass destruction. Edited by a sociolinguist and a political scientist, At War with Words includes chapters by Michael Billig, Paul Chilton, Ruth Wodak and a dozen other prominent linguists and communications scholars.

Die Beiträge entstanden 1999-2002 im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe The Formation of the Book of the Twelve der Society of Biblical Literature.
Abstract: Main description: For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. An exegesis which takes the final canonical text seriously undertakes to understand the structure and theological intention of this unity. The papers collected here attempt to reveal significant structures which overarch the individual components. Particular emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of thematic threads which are created when individual prophets take up topics from their predecessors (e.g. Jehovah's Day, conversion, role of the peoples) and intensify them. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve.
Abstract: Review text: "The papers in this book are of highest academic quality, and they are essential reading for a scholar interested in doing serious work on the Minor Prophets. This book is highly recommended."Kevin Mellish in: Religious Studies Review 4/2007 "Der Sammelband leistet einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Forschung.

Abstract: Main description: This book focuses on the decisive upheavals of the years after 375 A.D. in the Pannonian provinces, which were located between eastern Alps, the middle Danube, and the Adriatic Sea. It covers the Roman administration, the conquest by the Gothic Divisions, the development of the Visigoths and Ostrogoths as well as the appearance and eclipse of several peoples up to the late sixth century A.D. The treatment points out causal aspects that heralded the fall of the (western) Roman Empire.

Abstract: Main description: There is no question: We are all persons. But what exactly are persons? Are we immaterial souls or Cartesian Egos which only contingently have bodies? Or are persons nothing over and above their bodies? Are they essentially or most fundamentally animals, evolved beings of a certain sort? Or are we something other or more than animals, namely constituted beings with a certain capacity that distinguishes persons from everything else? What is necessary, and what is sufficient, for an entity to be classified or (re-)identified as a person? What's the value of an analysis of such (biological or psychological) conditions? What does it contribute to our understanding of ourselves as free agents or as beings wanting to live their individual live? The essays collected in this anthology try to answer these questions. They are primarily concerned with the metaphysics of persons and the criteria of personal identity, but also touch on problems of the theory of action and of practical philosophy.

Abstract: Main description: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

Abstract: Main description: Minglang Zhou's highly erudite and well-researched volume on the policies concerning writing reforms for China’s minorities since 1949 provides an original and well-reasoned summary of a complex process. It documents how different script reforms meet dramatically different fates according to local preferences, history, cross-border ties, and the vitality of previously-used scripts. In a style accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, Zhou's book is of interest to language planners, sinologists, applied linguists, writing theorists, and ethnologists.

Abstract: Demography has developed into a remarkably coherent field and now stands as a firmly established discipline with strong ties to policy-making agencies. However, in recent years there has been increasing recognition within demography of the limits of existing theories and methods, particularly its absence of a strong critical tradition and its isolation from recent theoretical developments in other social sciences. In this study, Nancy Riley and James McCarthy use the lens of postmodernism to structure a critical analysis of the field of demography. Paying particular attention to the fundamental epistemologies and methodologies that currently underlie the field, they explore how postmodern perspectives might serve to energize the field and how demography could be enhanced by the introduction of insights from other social sciences. Drawing on examples of new kinds of research in demography and related fields, this is an important new book that seeks to reinvigorate the field of demography.

Abstract: This is a fascinating and moving portrait of the people who are suffering in a more divided and less egalitarian Australian society. Based on the author's conversations with hundreds of people living in three areas commonly described as 'disadvantaged'- Inala in Queensland, Mount Druitt in New South Wales and Broadmeadows in Victoria - this is a book in which impoverished Australians, who are often absent from debates about poverty, tell their own stories

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Biographical note: Dr. Paul L. Redditt is professor for the Old Testament at Georgetown College, Kentucky/USA. Dr. Aaron Schart is professor for Old und New Testament at the University of Essen , Main description: For some years the view has become established that the Book of the Twelve is a systematically structured literary unity. The papers were written between 1999 and 2002 under the aegis of the Society of Biblical Literature's Working Group on The Formation of the Book of the Twelve , Main description: Seit einigen Jahren hat sich die Auffassung durchgesetzt, dass das Zwölfprophetenbuch eine planvoll gestaltete literarische Großeinheit ist. Die Beiträge entstanden 1999-2002 im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe The Formation of the Book of the Twelve der Society of Biblical Literature , Review text: "The papers in this book are of highest academic quality, and they are essential reading for a scholar interested in doing serious work on the Minor Prophets. This book is highly recommended."Kevin Mellish in: Religious Studies Review 4/2007 "Der Sammelband leistet einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Forschung.

Abstract: The Culture of Morality examines how explanations of social and moral development inform our understandings of morality and culture. People universally develop judgments that entail deep understandings of issues of welfare, justice, and rights, and such judgments stand alongside people's conceptions of social systems and realms of personal choice. Drawing on different cultures, the author shows that people in positions of lesser power in the social hierarchy, such as women and minorities, often oppose cultural arrangements and work to subvert and transform the system. Generalizations often made regarding the cultural sources or morality in traditions and general orientations like individualism and collectivism serve to obscure the heterogeneous nature of people's judgments and interactions. Analyses of the moral and social problems faced in many societies require recognition of people's multiple moral, social, and personal goals and of the ways social arrangements provoke opposition from those treated unfairly

Abstract: The philosopher and historian Bernhard Groethuysen was an outstanding figure in German-French cultural transfer between the wars. At the same time, his historical works make him one of the trailblazers of the modern turn toward the history of culture and the history of mentalities. This is the first comprehensive biography of an intellectual who was both a scholar in the German tradition and a Parisian homme de lettres. It points up the links between Groethuysen's life and works and defines his place in the 20th century European history of ideas

Abstract: Main description: By illustrating the quintessentially different self-perceptions of three contemporary German writers of Jewish background, this book examines a range of German-Jewish identities in a socio-cultural context in Wilhelmine Germany. Its recognition of the ways in which the individual's cultural identity - Moritz Goldstein's (1880-1977) cultural Zionism, Julius Bab's (1880-1955) synthesis of 'Deutschtum' and 'Judentum' and Ernst Lissauer's (1882-1937) advocacy of complete assimilation - was constantly refashioned in response to the challenges of increasing anti-Semitism, enables one to reach a fuller understanding of the evolving self-perception of German Jews.

Abstract: Contemporary archaeology is polarised between 'scientists' who analyse, classify and describe, and social theorists, influenced by sociologies of science and culture theory. By emphasising the process of interpretation, this book shows that there is no necessary conflict between the aims and procedures of the various factions

Abstract: The third of three volumes of essays by Quentin Skinner, one of the world's leading intellectual historians. This collection includes some of his most important essays on Thomas Hobbes, each of which has been carefully revised for publication in this form. In a series of writings spanning the past four decades Professor Skinner examines, with his customary perspicuity, the evolution and character of Hobbes's political thought. An indispensable work in its own right, this volume also serves as a demonstration of those methodological theories propounded in Volume I, and as an appositional commentary on the Renaissance values of civic virtue treated in Volume II. All of Professor Skinner's work is characterised by philosophical power, limpid clarity, and elegance of exposition; these essays, many of which are now recognised classics, provide a fascinating and convenient digest of the development of his thought. Professer Skinner has been awarded the Balzan Prize Life Time Achievement Award for Political Thought, History and Theory. Abstract: Appelbaum surveys literature from 1603 to the 1660s and shows how its ideal politics were engaged in the reality of political and social struggle. He also shows how self-defeating the exercise could be. In an era of political and religious conflict, writers asserted themselves as the authors of social and political ideals. But they also constructed systems in which the assertion of utopian mastery would have no place, and an ideal politics could no longer be imagined. This study will interest political and cultural historians as well as literary critics

Abstract: Britain's role in the First World War has been portrayed mainly through literature, films and plays, in most cases with a marked un-historical, anti-war spirit. This book follows the controversy from 1918 to the present, and concludes that historians are finally permitting the War to be placed in proper perspective

Abstract: "In this study, Nancy Henry introduces a new set of facts that place George Eliot's life and work within the contexts of mid nineteenth-century British colonialism and imperialism. Henry examines Eliot's roles as an investor in colonial stocks, a parent to emigrant sons, and a reader of colonial literature. She highlights the importance of these contexts to our understanding of both Eliot's fiction and her situation within Victorian culture. Henry argues that Eliot's decision to represent the empire only as it infiltrated the imaginations and domestic lives of her characters illuminates the nature of her realism. The book also re-examines the assumptions of post-colonial criticism about Victorian fiction and its relation to empire."--Jacket
