    Abstract: How do digital media change the way we read aloud, a key cultural tool for reading socialization? This qualitative study focuses on this central question. Using the structural-genetic approach to socialization research, the book analyzes the reading-aloud practices of eight families from data obtained through videography. Of particular interest is the impact of the digital picture book on the interactional structure of reading aloud.

Children cannot be effective in tomorrow's world if they are trained in yesterday's skills." Cyberkids draws together research in the sociology of childhood and social studies of technology to explore children's experiences in the Information Age. The book addresses key policy debates about social inclusion and exclusion, children's identities and friendships in on-line and off-line worlds and their relationships with families and teachers. It counters contemporary moral panics about children's risk from dangerous strangers on-line, about corruption and lost innocence from adult-centred material on the web and about the addiction to life on the screen. Instead, by showing how children use ICT in balanced and sophisticated ways, the book draws out the importance of everyday uses of technology and the ways in which children's local experiences are embedded within, and in part, constitute the global.

    Abstract: Das aktuelle Geschehen, über das die Massenmedien berichten, ist selbst häufig schon eine Folge der vorangegangenen Medienberichterstattung. Zudem findet das aktuelle Geschehen häufig nur deshalb statt, weil die Akteure erwarten, dass die Medien darüber berichten. Das Verhältnis zwischen dem aktuellen Geschehen, der Medienberichterstattung und ihren Folgen ist deshalb komplexer als die Medienwirkungsforschung vermuten lässt. Es ist jedoch nicht beliebig, sondern folgt erkennbaren Konstruktionsprinzipien, die man theoretisch erklären und empirisch nachweisen kann. Die Grundlagen hierfür liefern Begriffe, mit denen man verschiedene Aspekte der dargestellten Realität, der Realitätsdarstellung der Medien und der Realitätswahrnehmung der Bevölkerung unterscheiden, messen, in Beziehung setzen und erklären kann.

    Abstract: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media-film and television, recorded sound, and publishing-that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights. The provocative surveys and case studies in this nuanced cultural history reframe the "sexual revolution" as the mass sexualization of our mediated world.Contributors.     Abstract: Studies of  intercultural communication in applied linguistics initially focused on miscommunication, mainly between native and non-native speakers of English. The advent of the twenty-first century has witnessed, however, a revolution in the contexts and contents of intercultural communication; technological advances such as chat rooms, emails, personal weblogs, Facebook, Twitter, mobile text messaging on the one hand, and the accelerated pace of people's international mobility on the other have given a new meaning to the term 'intercultural communication'. Given the remarkable growth in the prevalence of intercultural communication among people from many cultural backgrounds, and across many contexts and channels, conceptual divides such as 'native/non-native' are now almost irrelevant. This has caused the power attached to English and native speaker-like English to lose much of its automatic domination. Such developments have provided new opportunities, as well as challenges, for the study of intercultural communication and its increasingly complex nature. This book showcases recent studies in the field in a multitude of contexts to enable a collective effort towards advancements in the area.

    Abstract: In this book, Nathanson examines how contemporary American television and associated digital media depict women's everyday lives as homemakers, career women, and mothers. Her focus on American popular culture from the 1990s through the present reveals two extremes: narratives about women who cannot keep house and narratives about women who only keep house. Nathanson looks specifically at the issue of time in this context and argues that the media constructs panics about domestic time scarcity while at the same time offering solutions for those very panics. Analyzing TV programs such as How Clean is Your House, Up All Night, and Supernanny, she finds that media's portrayals of women's time is crucial to understanding definitions of femininity, women's labor, and leisure in the postfeminist context.

    Abstract: Post-Critical Museology considers what the role of the public and the experience of audiences means to the everyday work of the art museum. It does this from the perspectives of the art museum itself as well as from the visitors it seeks. TV Globo, one of the world's largest media conglomerates, has a dominant position in Brazil's communications landscape. It also exports telenovelas to more than 130 countries and has established joint ventures with transnational media conglomerates. Beginning in the mid-1990s, TV Globo began a process of "opening," replacing its authoritarian model of journalism with a more independent reporting style. Representations of Brazil in prime time telenovelas have also shifted. Given this shift, Porto considers some of the following questions: What explains these changes in Brazil's most powerful media company? How are they related to processes of political and social democratization? How did TV Globo's opening affect Brazil's emerging democracy, especially in terms of the quality of political accountability mechanisms?     Abstract: In this book, Goriunova offers a critical analysis of the processes that produce digital culture. Digital cultures thrive on creativity, developing new forces of organization to overcome repetition and reach brilliance. In order to understand the processes that produce culture, the author introduces the concept of the art platform, a specific configuration of creative passions, codes, events, individuals and works that are propelled by cultural currents and maintained through digitally native means. Art platforms can occur in numerous contexts bringing about genuinely new cultural production, that, given enough force, come together to sustain an open mechanism while negotiating social, technical and political modes of power. Software art, digital forms of literature, 8-bit music, 3D art forms, pro-surfers, and networks of geeks are test beds for enquiry into what brings and holds art platforms together. Goriunova provides a new means of understanding the development of cultural forms on the Internet, placing the phenomenon of participatory and social networks in a conceptual and historical perspective, and offering powerful tools for researching cultural phenomena overlooked by other approaches.

    Abstract: Adaptation constitutes the driving force of contemporary culture, with stories adapted across an array of media formats. However, adaptation studies has been concerned almost exclusively with textual analysis, in particular with compare-and-contrast studies of individual novel and film pairings. This has left almost completely unexamined crucial questions of how adaptations come to be made, what are the industries with the greatest stake in making them, and who the decision-makers are in the adaptation process. The Adaptation Industry re-imagines adaptation not as an abstract process, but as a material industry. It presents the adaptation industry as a cultural economy of six interlocking institutions, stakeholders and decision-makers all engaged in the actual business of adapting texts: authors; agents; publishers; book prize committees; scriptwriters; and screen producers and distributors. Through trading in intellectual property rights to cultural works, these six nodal points in the adaptation network are tightly interlinked, with success for one party potentially auguring for success in other spheres. But marked rivalries between these institutional forces also exist, with competition characterizing every aspect of the adaptation process.     Abstract: Legitimating Television: Media Convergence and Cultural Status explores how and why television is gaining a new level of cultural respectability in the 21st century. Once looked down upon as a "plug-in drug" offering little redeeming social or artistic value, television is now said to be in a creative renaissance, with critics hailing the rise of Quality series such as Mad Men and 30 Rock. Likewise, DVDs and DVRs, web video, HDTV, and mobile devices have shifted the longstanding conception of television as a household appliance toward a new understanding of TV as a sophisticated, high-tech gadget. Newman and Levine argue that television's growing prestige emerges alongside the convergence of media at technological, industrial, and experiential levels. Television is permitted to rise in respectability once it is connected to more highly valued media and audiences. Legitimation works by denigrating "ordinary" television associated with the past, distancing the television of the present from the feminized and mass audiences assumed to be inherent to the "old" TV. It is no coincidence that the most validated programming and technologies of the convergence era are associated with a more privileged viewership. The legitimation of television articulates the medium with the masculine over the feminine, the elite over the mass, reinforcing cultural hierarchies that have long perpetuated inequalities of gender and class. Legitimating Television urges readers to move beyond the question of taste-whether TV is "good" or "bad"-and to focus instead on the cultural, political, and economic issues at stake in television's transformation in the digital age.

    Abstract: In The Gentrification of Nightlife and the Right to the City, Hae explores how nightlife in New York City, long associated with various subcultures of social dancing, has been recently transformed as the city has undergone the gentrification of its space and the post-industrialization of its economy and society. This book offers a detailed analysis of the conflicts emerging between newly transplanted middle-class populations and different sectors of nightlife actors, and how these conflicts have led the NYC government to enforce "Quality of Life" policing over nightlife businesses. In particular, it provides a deep investigation of the zoning regulations that the municipal government has employed to control where certain types of nightlife can or cannot be located. Hae demonstrates the ways in which these struggles over nightlife have led to the "gentrification of nightlife," while infringing on urban inhabitants' rights of access to spaces of diverse urban subcultures - their "right to the city." The author also connects these struggles to the widely documented phenomenon of the increasing militarization of social life and space in contemporary cities, and the right to the city movements that have emerged in response. The story presented here involves dynamic and often contradictory interactions between different anti/pro-nightlife actors, illustrating what "actually existing" gentrification and post-industrialization looks like, and providing an urgent example for experts in related fields to consider as part of a re-theorization of gentrification and post-industrialization.

    Abstract: Since South Korea achieved partial democracy in 1987, the country has moved away from authoritarian political control. However, after two decades of democratic transition, South Korea still does not have a strong liberal, individualist culture - something that has brought about a wide range of scholarly discussion on the nature of democracy practised in this dynamic country. While the political changes in South Korea have received rigorous attention from Western scholars, less attention has been given to the changing nature and role of media in this and other such transitions. Wirft man einen Blick auf die Welt der Spielfilme, in denen weibliche Homosexualität thematisch involviert ist, lässt sich schnell feststellen, dass die Inszenierung lesbischer Präsenz deutlich homogen erscheint. Immer wieder wird auf die gleichen Darstellungsmethoden zurückgegriffen, sobald weibliche Homosexualität filmisch in Szene gesetzt wird. Die Umsetzung endet dabei in einer Fülle von Ablehnungsreaktionen gegenüber lesbischen Frauen, vielen männlich auftretenden Frauen, zahlreichen Femmes fatales und noch mehr integrierten Männern in einer eigentlich lesbischen love story. Konkretisiert werden kann das nur an den Filmen selbst. Und Beispiele lassen sich dabei sowohl in unterschiedlichen Entstehungszeiten, Kulturen, als auch Genres finden. Denn das 'lesbische Filmschema' beginnt in 'Die Büchse der Pandora' und setzt sich bis in die heutige Zeit fort. Übrig bleibt die Frage, ob sich die mangelnde lesbische Präsenz in der Öffentlichkeit als Antwort für die stereotype Inszenierung von weiblicher Homosexualität herausstellen kann.   Biographische Informationen Stefanie Tröstl, M.A., wurde 1986 in München geboren. Hill and Marguerite Helmers examine the connection between visual images and persuasion, or how images act rhetorically upon viewers. Chapters included here highlight the differences and commonalities among a variety of projects identified as "visual rhetoric," leading to a more precise definition of the term and its role in rhetorical studies. Contributions to this volume consider a wide variety of sites of image production--from architecture to paintings, from film to needlepoint--in order to understand how images and texts work upon readers as symbolic forms of representation. Each chapter discusses, analyzes, and explains the visual aspect of a particular subject, and illustrates the ways in which messages and meaning are communicated visually. The contributions include work from rhetoric scholars in the English and communication disciplines, and represent a variety of methodologies--theoretical, textual analysis, psychological research, and cultural studies, among others. Do we feel sad when others are sad? Or are we relieved by the knowledge that our circumstances might be better? As reality television extends into the experiences of the everyday, it makes dramatic and often shocking the mundane aspects of our intimate relations, inviting us as viewers into a volatile arena of mediated morality. This book addresses the impact of this endless opening out of intimacy as an entertainment trend that erodes the traditional boundaries between spectator and performer demanding new tools for capturing television's relationships with audiences. Rather than asking how the reality television genre is interpreted as 'text' or representation the authors investigate the politics of viewer encounters as interventions, evocations, and more generally mediated social relations. The authors show how different reactions can involve viewers in tournaments of value, as women viewers empathise and struggle to validate their own lives. The authors use these detailed responses to challenge theories of the self, governmentality and ideology.     Abstract: This book provides the first comprehensive account of trauma as a critical concept in the study of modern visual media, from Freud to the present day, explaining how contemporary trauma studies emerged from research on Holocaust representation in which the audiovisual testimony of survivors was posed as an authentic alternative to popular television and film dramatizations. It argues that the media coverage of 9/11 and the subsequent 'war on terror,' however, has revealed how the formation of communities of witness and commemoration around 'traumatic events' can perpetuate violence and inequality. The book explains how Benjamin, Adorno and Barthes, drawing from psychoanalysis, analyzed the roles of fantasy, ideology and collective identification in mass media, and began to understand trauma as an authentic experience of modernity. It proposes that the insights of these earlier theorists, along with more recent arguments by Derrida, Agamben and Zizek, continue to provide important perspectives on today's politics of mediated shock and terror.

In selbst gedrehten Videos haben die jungen Männer sich zu der Tat geäußert und Abschied genommen. Ihr Tagebuch und die Aufzeichnungen der Überwachungskameras sind weitere Zeugnisse ihres Auftritts, bei dem zwölf Menschen sterben und 36 verletzt werden. Eine Rechnung, die auch im Fall Columbine aufgeht. Das Medienecho reicht um die ganze Welt, das meiste Material ist auch nach einem Jahrzehnt im Internet frei verfügbar. Und viele spätere Amokläufer tun es den Columbine-Schützen gleich, posieren und plaudern vor der Kamera für die Nachwelt. Woher kommt dieser Trend? Welche Faktoren lösten ihn aus? Und haben die Täter ihre mediale Nutzung zur Selbstdarstellung im Lauf der Jahre verändert? Anhand dreier Fallbeispiele zeichnet Jasmin Seiwert die Entwicklungslinien des Medieneinsatzes junger Schulamokläufer nach. Dazu wertet sie vorhandenes Videomaterial mit einer qualitativen Filmanalyse aus. Die Täter werden von einigen Verehrern als Märtyrer und Helden, sogar als Götter gesehen, deren Vorbild nachzueifern sei. Soll man ihnen also überhaupt eine mediale Bühne bieten?.
