    Abstract: This book traces the transformations of Soviet and post-Soviet Islam within the former collectivised villages in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Inner Russia. The authors provide rich evidence for the close interplay between Soviet kolkhoz administrations and the religious personnel of Islam on the local lore. They show how this connection prepared the ground for the emergence of alternative Muslim congregations in already the post-Stalinist Soviet Union — long before the phenomenon became broadly visible during the boom of public religious practice in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
    Abstract: The larger part of the Muslim population in the Soviet realm lived and continues to live in rural areas. Other than in many parts of the presentay world of Islam, alternative, selfsegregated, often antiestablishment Muslim congregations emerged outside the big urban agglomerations of the former USSR. Among other factors of this emergence can be mentioned: the mass resettlements operated from the 1940s to the 1970s towards cashcrop growing lowlands; the tight limitation on the drift from the land by the Soviet authorities; the relative autonomy enjoyed by rural production units endowed with specialised economic profiles; and the liberalisation of religious practice in the wake of de-Stalinisation. Eleven case studies trace the transformations of Soviet and post-Soviet Islam within the former collectivised villages in Central Asia, the Caucasus and Inner Russia. The authors provide rich evidence for the close inter­play between Soviet kolkhoz administrations and the religious personnel of Islam on the local lore.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet auf der Basis bislang nur in Manuskriptform zugänglicher Quellen aus Kirchenarchiven in Aleppo und Damaskus einen Konflikt zwischen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen mit komplexen Profilen nach. Dafür werden miteinander verflochtene politische, wirtschaftliche und administrative Ursachen der Ereignisse analysiert, die mit in der Frühzeit der Tanzimat-Reformen initiierten Prozessen des Wandels verbunden waren.
    Abstract: Die Untersuchung richtet den Fokus insbesondere auf den städtischen Raum, der bedeutende historische Entwicklungen reflektiert, die wiederum auf ihn zurückwirken. Diese Perspektive ermöglicht es, eine Geschichte der Aleppiner Bevölkerung zu entwerfen, über die verfügbare Quellen meist schweigen.

Die Quellen der monotheistischen Religionen Judentum, Christentum und Islam beinhalten ein Gewaltpotenzial, das im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder von ihren Anhängern instrumentalisiert wurde. Diese Quellen können wir verstehen, wenn wir an ihre Aussagen nicht mit unserer heutigen Denkweise herangehen, sondern versuchen, sie aus der Perspektive ihrer Entstehungzeit zu erfassen. In diesem Buch haben sich christliche und muslimische Theologinnen und Theologen dem Thema Gewalt in der Bibel und im Koran gestellt. Anhand von Textbeispielen und hermeneutischen Zugangsweisen werden die Probleme angesprochen und Möglichkeiten zum Verständnis und zur Auslegung erörtert.

Šaihānī repräsentierte den Zweig der maurischen Tiğānīya, der sich maßgeblich für die Etablierung einer im Senegal entstandenen Erneuerungsbewegung in Mauretanien einsetzte.
    Abstract: Diese von Ibrāhīm Niasse (1900-1975) Ende der 1920er Jahre inspirierte Erneuerung zeichnete sich insbesondere durch die Popularisierung von Transzendenzerfahrungen aus.

The perplexing event has not been adequately accounted for by historians in their large-scale assessments of how and why the Holocaust occurred. In this gripping new analysis, Alon Confino draws on an array of archives across three continents to propose a penetrating new assessment of one of the central moral problems of the twentieth century. To a surprising extent, Confino demonstrates, the mass murder of Jews during the war years was powerfully anticipated in the culture of the prewar years. The author shifts his focus away from the debates over what the Germans did or did not know about the Holocaust and explores instead how Germans came to conceive of the idea of a Germany without Jews. He traces the stories the Nazis told themselves--where they came from and where they were heading--and how those stories led to the conclusion that Jews must be eradicated in order for the new Nazi civilization to arise. Wie jedoch wirken sich diese negativen Stereotype auf das Alltagsleben und die Identitätskonstruktionen der Betroffenen aus? Am Beispiel deutsch-marokkanischer Interviewpartner_innen weist Maike Didero nach, dass divergierende Reaktionen auf das deutsche Islambild durch unterschiedliche translokale Positionierungen erklärt werden können. Ihre Studie präsentiert auf Grundlage der Subjekttheorien von Laclau/Mouffe, Butler und Bourdieu ein innovatives Konzept zur Analyse von narrativen Identitäten als performative Praxis

    Abstract: Die religiöse Vielfalt Osteuropas übertrifft die des Westens bei weitem. Das Neben- und Miteinander von Schamanen, Muslimen, Christen und Juden prägte schon das Mittelalter. Im 17. Jahrhundert kamen Buddhisten hinzu. An der Grenze zwischen Ost- und Westkirche entstanden zudem neue Glaubensrichtungen: Die Unierte Kirche hielt an der byzantinischen Liturgie fest, erkannte aber den Papst an. Und der Chassidismus widmete sich vor allem den ekstatischen und magischen Aspekten der jüdischen Tradition. Sie alle versuchte der sowjetische Atheismus zu beseitigen, bis er am – auch durch die Religion getragenen – Widerstand Polens zerbrach. Christoph Schmidt entfaltet ein eindrucksvolles Panorama der religiösen Vielfalt zwischen Weichsel und Wolga, führt den Leser vor mittelalterliche Ikonen, in die Schtetl der Frühen Neuzeit, in die Jurten der buddhistischen Kalmyken, aber auch zu den Moscheen der Tataren-Metropole Kazan, die seit Jahrhunderten Zentrum des russischen Islam ist.

    Abstract: "The subject of this book is a new "Islam." This Islam began to take shape in 1988 around the Rushdie affair, the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the first Gulf War of 1991. It was consolidated in the period following September 11, 2001. It is a name, a discursive site, a signifier at once flexible and constrained...indeed, it is a geopolitical agon, in and around which some of the most pressing aporias of modernity, enlightenment, liberalism, and reformation are worked out. At this discursive site are many metonyms for Islam: the veiled or "pious" Muslim woman, the militant, the minority Muslim injured by Western free speech. Each of these figures functions as a cipher enabling repeated encounters with the question "How do we free ourselves from freedom?" Again and again, freedom is imagined as Western, modern, imperial...a dark imposition of Enlightenment. The pious and injured Muslim who desires his or her own enslavement is imagined as freedom's other. At Freedom's Limit is an intervention into current debates regarding religion, secularism, and Islam and provides a deep critique of the anthropology and sociology of Islam that have consolidated this formation. It shows that, even as this Islam gains increasing traction in cultural production from television shows to movies to novels, the most intricate contestations of Islam so construed are to be found in the work of Muslim writers and painters. This book includes extended readings of jihadist proclamations; postcolonial law; responses to law from minorities in Muslim-majority societies; Islamophobic films; the novels of Leila Aboulela, Mohammed Hanif, and Nadeem Aslam; and the paintings of Komail Aijazuddin"..

    Abstract: Culture is a constant reference in debates surrounding Islam in Europe. Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group identities, collective ways of life and recognition. This volume extends such analysis of culture by approaching it as semiotic practice which conjoins the making of subjects with the configuration of the social. Examining fields such as memory, literature, film, and Islamic art, the studies in this volume explore culture as another element in the assemblage of rationalities governing European Islam. From this perspective, the transformations of European identities can be understood as a matter of cultural practice and politics, which extend the analytical frames of political philosophy, historical legacies, normative orders and social dynamics.

    Abstract: 1850 brachen im osmanischen Aleppo Unruhen aus, in deren Verlauf muslimische Einwohner aus den östlichen Vororten von Christen bewohnte Stadtteile überfielen. Erst das militärische Eingreifen der osmanischen Autoritäten führte zur Beendigung des Aufstands.
    Abstract: Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet auf der Basis bislang nur in Manuskriptform zugänglicher Quellen aus Kirchenarchiven in Aleppo und Damaskus einen Konflikt zwischen gesellschaftlichen Gruppen mit komplexen Profilen nach. Dafür werden miteinander verflochtene politische, wirtschaftliche und administrative Ursachen der Ereignisse analysiert, die mit in der Frühzeit der Tanzimat-Reformen initiierten Prozessen des Wandels verbunden waren.
    Abstract: Die Untersuchung richtet den Fokus insbesondere auf den städtischen Raum, der bedeutende historische Entwicklungen reflektiert, die wiederum auf ihn zurückwirken. Diese Perspektive ermöglicht es, eine Geschichte der Aleppiner Bevölkerung zu entwerfen, über die verfügbare Quellen meist schweigen.

    Abstract: The headscarf is an increasingly contentious symbol in countries across the world. Those who don the headscarf in Germany are referred to as ""integration-refusers."" In Turkey, support by and for headscarf-wearing women allowed a religious party to gain political power in a strictly secular state. A niqab-wearing Muslim woman was denied French citizenship for not conforming to national values. And in the Netherlands, Muslim women responded to the hatred of popular ultra-right politicians with public appeals that mixed headscarves with in-your-face humor.     Abstract: Der Salafismus, eine strikte, orthodoxe Auslegung des Islam, macht immer häufiger in westdeutschen Grossstädten Schlagzeilen, etwa durch populäre Prediger wie Pierre Vogel, aber auch die Anschläge der "Sauerland-Gruppe". Ausgehend von Gesprächen auf einem Salafisten-Seminar in Duisburg analysiert der Journalist Kraetzer Strategien und Inhalte der salafistischen Predigergruppen und beschäftigt sich vor allem differenziert mit den unterschiedlichen Strömungen, die eine grosse Bandbreite von Positionen aufweisen: zwischen denjenigen, die ein gottesfürchtiges Leben weitgehend als Privatsache betrachten und jenen, die sich unter dem Motto "Lieben und Hassen für Allah" als die Prediger der "Wahren Religion" verstehen. Anhand typischer "Karrieren" vom jugendlichen Aussenseiter zum radikalisierten Terrorhelfer versucht Kraetzer, zu verstehen, welchen Reiz die salafistische Ideologie vor allem auf Jugendliche auszuüben vermag. Abschliessend eine Erörterung eines sinnvollen Umgangs aller Akteure mit dem Salafismus in Deutschland.

    Abstract: This study is about a popular manifestation of Islamic devotion that embraces a pluralist setting, keeping itself in a dynamic dialogue with non-Muslim practices. With evidence from various public devotional narratives and ritual practices, the author argues that even universal understanding of living Islam remains incomplete if we do not consider this locally produced pluralised devotional setting that surrounds it. He seeks to address various aspects of local and localised Islam through an examination of Gugudu's local and popular transformation of normative Islam, giving particular focus to the various devotional rituals that blend Muslim and Hindu practices in the public event of Muharram.

    Abstract: The Tel Aviv annual Purim celebrations were the largest public events in British Palestine, and they played a key role in the development of the urban Jewish experience in the Promised Land. Carnival in Tel-Aviv presents a historical-anthropological analysis of this mass public event and explores the ethnographic dimension of Zionism. This study sheds new light on the ideological world of urban Zionism, the capitalistic aspects of Zionist culture, and the urban nature of the Zionist project, which sought to create a nation of warriors and farmers, but in fact nationalized the urban space and constructed it as its main public sphere.
