    Abstract: Die Beiträge zu diesem Sammelband beleuchten anhand von Fallbeispielen verschiedene Aspekte der turko-iranischen Welt von der Islamisierung ab dem 7. Jahrhundert bis in die heutige Zeit. Im breiten geographischen Spektrum vom Bosporus über die Ǧazīra, Iran, Afghanistan und Zentralasien bis nach Indien und zu den Grenzgebieten Chinas widmen sich Einzelfallstudien aus historischer, philologischer, literaturwissenschaftlicher und ethnologischer Perspektive den Studien von Stadt-, Lokal- und Regionalgeschichte, verschiedenen Formen von Geschichtsschreibung und Fragen von Herrschaftslegitimation. Obgleich bei der Bearbeitung von genremäßig unterschiedlichen Textmaterialien und Dokumenten methodisch ebenso diverse Ansätze und Fragestellungen zu Tage treten, bieten die vorliegenden Beiträge ein anschauliches Bild der turko-iranischen Welt in Geschichte und Gegenwart, die als Motor der Geistes- und Politikgeschichte der Welt des Islams seit jeher eine herausragende Position eingenommen hat. Als eurasische Schnitt- und Anschlussstelle zur Seidenstraße und später zu den russischen (Zentralasien, Iran), britischen (Indien, Iran) sowie chinesischen (Ost-Turkestan) Hegemoniebestrebungen war diese Großregion seit der Dissoziation der souveränen islamischen Herrschaften ein ständiger Zankapfel der Fremdmächte, was schließlich im 20. Jahrhundert zur ihrer Aufteilung in verschiedene Interessenssphären geführt hat. Auch aus dieser Perspektive will dieser Sammelband implizit auf den zentralen Stellenwert dieser Großregion in den letzten 14 Jahrhunderten hinweisen.

    Abstract: Wie prägend waren Ängste für die Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland? Wie beeinflussten sie Wahrnehmungen, Positionen und politisches Handeln? Frank Biess erzählt die Geschichte des westdeutschen Staates als Geschichte seiner Angstzyklen: Ob die Furcht vor den Alliierten, vor dem Kommunismus, vor Terror, atomarer Aufrüstung, Automatisierung oder Umweltzerstörung - der Autor zeigt anhand kollektiver Ängste, wie diese die Bundesrepublik zugleich verunsicherten und stabilisierten. Diffuse Ängste im Zuge gesellschaftlicher und technologischer Mobilisierung spielten dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie bestimmte Befürchtungen, etwa vor einer Eskalation des kalten Krieges. Biess' Darstellung spürt der kontinuierlichen Verunsicherung in einer sich demokratisierenden und liberalisierenden Gesellschaft nach. Der Band bietet einen innovativen Überblick über die Kultur- und Debattengeschichte des Heimatbegriffs seit dem 17. Jh. Die meist missverstandene Bewertung der Romantik von Heimat wird ebenso behandelt wie die Propaganda in der Kolonialzeit, im Ersten Weltkrieg und im Nationalsozialismus. Ein systematischer Teil beleuchtet im Kontext von Heimat umstrittene Begriffe wie Kitsch oder Nostalgie. Damit leistet der Band einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Versachlichung einer ideologisch stark aufgeladenen Debatte und hilft, die oft zu Schlagworten verkürzten Argumente besser zu verstehen.
    Abstract: Der Begriff Heimat polarisiert. In der politischen Debatte wird er von Verteidigern wie Kritikern instrumentalisiert. Susanne Scharnowski zeichnet erstmals die Entwicklung des Heimatgedankens in der deutschen Kulturgeschichte vom 17.     Abstract: Wie ist die Stimmung? Nicht so gut. Von Zuversicht kann keine Rede sein. Wir fühlen uns bedroht, wollen das Erreichte sichern. Wer weiß, was die Zukunft bringt? Für Heinz Bude sind Stimmungen die Gefühle der Gesellschaft. Er analysiert, wie sie entstehen, wie sie beeinflusst werden können, aber auch, wie sie kippen können. Stimmungen entscheiden darüber, wie wir die Welt wahrnehmen, deshalb ist es Politikern so wichtig, die Stimmung der Wähler zu kennen. Heinz Bude zeigt, warum Stimmungen in der Politik oft mehr entscheiden als Argumente. Stimmungen sind vage, flüchtig und unberechenbar. Aber wer verstehen will, wie unsere Demokratie funktioniert, muss von ihrer Macht über die Menschen wissen. „Die «universelle Stimmung der Selbstmotivierung, Selbstüberprüfung und Selbstverwirklichung», so Bude, scheine nur zwei Möglichkeiten zuzulassen: «die Akzeleration oder die Kontemplation, die Selbstüberbietung oder die Selbstversenkung, die Intensivierung der Tendenz oder den Exodus aus dem System». Doch setzt der teilnahmsvolle Beobachter auf eine dritte Verhaltensmöglichkeit, die sich der vermeintlichen Alternative nicht beuge. Er hört – so wird man sagen dürfen – das Gras wachsen und glaubt eine aufkeimende Stimmung erspüren zu können. Die dereinst in dieser Stimmung sein werden, nennt Bude, nicht ganz unfeierlich, «die Zukünftigen». Es sollen dies solche sein, die – «verhalten und scheu» – einen «anderen Anfang» suchen. Das tönt nicht nur nach Heidegger, sondern ist des Philosophen zweideutiger Beschwörung eines geschichtlichen Ereignisses entnommen, das alles, alles wenden soll. Ganz so gefährlich mutet Budes Übersetzung Heideggers freilich nicht an, dafür aber ähnlich vage. Das Lebensgefühl der Zukünftigen, so der Schlusspunkt, werde von «Weltoffenheit ohne Selbstverneinung» bestimmt sein“ (NZZ)

    Abstract: " From civically and politically engaged women linking their identity as "mothers" to their fight for prohibition, public sanitation, and protective labor laws to the general call to arms of "mama grizzlies" issued by Sarah Palin in 2010, American political activists and candidates have used motherhood to rally women's interest, support, and participation throughout American history. Politicized motherhood persists, and motherhood continues to inspire women's participation and direct their concerns. In The Political Consequences of Motherhood, Jill S. Greenlee investigates the complex relationship between motherhood and women's political attitudes. Combining a historical overview of the ways motherhood has been used for political purposes with recent political opinion surveys and individual-level analysis, she explains how and when motherhood shapes women's thoughts and preferences. Greenlee argues that two mechanisms account for the durability of motherhood politics. First, women experience attitudinal shifts when they become mothers. Second, "mother" is a broad-based identity, widely shared and ideologically unconstrained, that lends itself to appeals across the political spectrum to build support for candidates and policy issues"--

    Abstract: Over the last decade, pious Muslims all over the world have gone through contradictory transformations. Though public attention commonly rests on the turn toward violence, this book's stories of transformation to 'moderate Islam' in a previously radical district in Istanbul exemplify another experience. In a shift away from distrust of the state to partial secularization, Islamists in Turkey transitioned through a process of absorption into existing power structures. With rich descriptions of life in the district of Sultanbeyli, this unique work investigates how religious activists organized, how authorities defeated them, and how the emergent pro-state Justice and Development Party incorporated them. As Tugal reveals, the absorption of a radical movement was not simply the foregone conclusion of an inevitable world-historical trend but an outcome of contingent struggles.With a closing comparative look at Egypt and Iran, the book situates the Turkish case in a broad historical context and discusses why Islamic politics have not been similarly integrated into secular capitalism elsewhere.

    Abstract: Drawing on a wide range of empirical data, the volume presents a thorough discussion of impoliteness and power in language. It addresses the enormous imbalance that exists between academic interest in politeness phenomena when compared to impoliteness phenomena, and it offers inspiration for research on impoliteness, conflict and aggression in many different academic fields of enquiry, both within linguistics and beyond.
    Abstract: This book is relevant for phonologists, morphologists, Slavists and cognitive linguists, and addresses two questions: How can the morphology-phonology interface be accommodated in cognitive linguistics? Do morphophonological alternations have a meaning? These questions are explored via a comprehensive analysis of stem alternations in Russian verbs. The analysis is couched in R.W. Langacker's Cognitive Grammar framework, and the book offers comparisons to other varieties of cognitive linguistics, such as Construction Grammar and Conceptual Integration. The proposed analysis is furthermore compared to rule-based and constraint-based approaches to phonology in generative grammar. Without resorting to underlying representations or procedural rules, the Cognitive Linguistics framework facilitates an insightful approach to abstract phonology, offering the important advantage of restrictiveness. Cognitive Grammar provides an analysis of an entire morphophonological system in terms of a parsimonious set of theoretical constructs that all have cognitive motivation. No ad hoc machinery is invoked, and the analysis yields strong empirical predictions. Another advantage is that Cognitive Grammar can identify the meaning of morphophonological alternations. For example, it is argued that stem alternations in Russian verbs conspire to signal non-past meaning. This book is accessible to a broad readership and offers a welcome contribution to phonology and morphology, which have been understudied in cognitive linguistics

    Abstract: The European Union's motto 'United in Diversity' contrasts with the cultural standardization entailed in the formation of nation-states and the forging of political identities in Europe. So what does being 'united in diversity' mean? Focusing on language politics and policies, this book offers a thorough assessment of the implications of cultural and linguistic diversity for the process of constructing a European polity. It sheds light on some of the most pressing problems associated with contemporary identity politics. It is often claimed that the recurrent celebration of diversity in Europe's programmatic declarations has an effective political impact. Kraus offers a critical analysis of how the EU has responded to the normative challenge of creating an institutional frame for integration which allows cultural differences to be transcended without ignoring them

Nach grundlegenden Daten werden Geschichte, Politik, Religion, Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft beschrieben. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf Palästina. Der Berichtszeitraum reicht bis Mitte/Ende 2006. Die Autoren sind Wissenschaftler und Journalisten, jeweils mit Bezug zum beschriebenen Staat. Verständlich, ausreichend für grundlegende Informationen (und damit gerade für kleinere Büchereien nützlich) füllt der Band eine Bestandslücke.
