Abstract: This book explores gender norms and women's rights in the age of AI. The author examines how gender dynamics have evolved in the spheres of work, self-image and safety, and education, and how these might be reflected in current challenges in AI development. The book also explores opportunities in AI to address issues facing women, and how we might harness current technological developments for gender equality. Taking a narrative tone, the book is interwoven with stories and a reflection on the raising young children during the COVID-19 pandemic. It includes both expert and personal interviews to create a nuanced and multidimensional perspective on the state of women's rights and what might be done to move forward

Abstract: This book critically explores how and to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) can infringe human rights and/or lead to socially harmful consequences and how to avoid these. The European Union has outlined how it will use big data, machine learning, and AI to tackle a number of inherently social problems, including poverty, climate change, social inequality and criminality. The contributors of this book argue that the developments in AI must take place in an appropriate legal and ethical framework and they make recommendations to ensure that harm and human rights violations are avoided. The book is split into two parts: the first addresses human rights violations and harms that may occur in relation to AI in different domains (e.g. border control, surveillance, facial recognition) and the second part offers recommendations to address these issues. It draws on interdisciplinary research and speaks to policy-makers and criminologists, sociologists, scholars in STS studies, security studies scholars and legal scholars

Abstract: This book seeks to identify the reasons why some countries were more efficient and effective than others in responding to the COVID 19 pandemic, and why the global community failed to coalesce. What are the political determinants of the different state responses to the pandemic? Why was scientific advice rejected or ignored in many countries? What has been the role, respectively, of neoliberalism, populism, and authoritarianism in the making of Covid-19 policy? What role have each of these factors played in the uneven and clearly inadequate global response to the pandemic? In an effort to understand why some states failed to handle the pandemic properly, some of the literature suggests that populism is at the root of the current failure of international co-operation. The global financial crisis of 2008-10 triggered significant cooperation within the G-20, led by the combined efforts of the United States and China. These forms of cooperation have clearly disappeared in the context of the pandemic, not only with respect to economic policy but also in public health and management. The authors of this volume link the different state responses to the pandemic-- from its inception to the start of the vaccination campaign, and to the political regimes prevailing in each. In particular, the present volume focuses on a distinction between the responses of neo-liberal regimes, populist regimes and authoritarian ones. Leila Simona Talani has been Professor of International Political Economy in the Department of European and International Studies at King’s College London since 2014. She is the current editor of the Palgrave series: The Politics of Citizenship and Migration. Alan Cafruny (Ph.D.) Cornell (1983) is Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs at Hamilton College. He is a former series editor (with Herman Schwartz) of the series: Advances in International Political Economy, sponsored by the International Political Economy Section of the International Studies Association.

Abstract: Altman has assembled an estimable group of scholars who provide fresh perspectives on traditional topics in the theory of legal punishment and intriguing discussions of issues that stretch the boundaries of penal theory. The contributions to the volume are of uniformly high quality, and scholars and students interested in these topics will benefit from reading and engaging with them. Richard L. Lippke, Professor Emeritus, Department of Criminal Justice, Indiana University-Bloomington, USA This is a serious survey of philosophical positions on the justification and politics of punishment, skeptical engagements with the legitimacy of criminal punishment, and explorations of possibilities for alternatives to punitiveness. International leaders in the field are well represented here. This book comes at an opportune moment for thinking critically about these important subjects. It will be a valuable resource for scholars interested in criminal law and the search for justice. Erin I. Kelly, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Professor of Philosophy, Tufts University, USA This Handbook provides a comprehensive survey of major topics in the philosophy of punishment from many of the field’s leading scholars. Key features Presents a history of punishment theory from ancient times to the present. Evaluates the main proposed justifications of punishment, including retributivism, general and specific deterrence theories, mixed theories, expressivism, societal-defense theory, fair play theory, rights forfeiture theory, and the public health-quarantine model. Discusses sentencing, proportionality, policing, prosecution, and the role punishment plays in the context of the state. Examines advances in neuroscience and debates about whether free will skepticism undermines the justifiability of punishment. Considers forgiveness, restorative justice, and calls to abolish punishment. Addresses pressing social issues such as mass incarceration, juvenile justice, punitive torture, the death penalty, and “cruel and unusual” punishment. · With its unmatched breadth and depth, this book is essential reading for scholars who want to keep abreast of the field and for advanced students wishing to explore the frontiers of the subject. Matthew C. Altman is Professor of Philosophy at Central Washington University, USA. His most recent monograph is A Theory of Legal Punishment: Deterrence, Retribution, and the Aims of the State (2021). He is also series editor of Palgrave Handbooks in the Philosophy of Law.

Abstract: This book deals with a central aspect of Marx’s critique of society that is usually not examined further since it is taken as a matter of course: its scientific claim of being true. But what concept of truth underlies his way of reasoning which attempts to comprehend the social and political circumstances in terms of the possibility of their practical upheaval? In three studies focusing specifically on the development of Marx’s scientific critique of capitalist society, his journalistic commentaries on European politics, and his reflections on the organisation of revolutionary subjectivity, the authors carve out the immanent relation between the scientifically substantiated claim to truth and the revolutionary perspective in Marxʼs writings. They argue that Marx does not grasp the world ‘as it is’ but conceives it as an inverted state which cannot remain what it is but generates the means by which it can eventually be overcome. This is not something to be taken lightly: Such a concept has theoretical, political and even violent consequences – consequences that nevertheless derive neither from a subjective error nor a contamination of an otherwise ‘pure’ science. By analyzing Marx’s concept of truth the authors also attempt to shed light on a pivotal problematique of any modern critique of society that raises a reasoned claim of being true. Matthias Bohlender is Professor of Political Theory at the School of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences, Universität Osnabrück, Germany. Anna-Sophie Schönfelder is Research Associate at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre “Dynamics of Security”, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany. Matthias Spekker is Associate Lecturer in Political Theory and the History of Ideas and currently teaching at the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Germany. The authors worked together in the DFG funded research project. “Marx and the ‘criticism in a hand-to-hand fight' – On a genealogy of modern critique of society”, Universität Osnabrück, Germany.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung: This book is the first epoch-spanning study on Jewish participation in the Italian women's movement, focussing in a transnational perspective on the experience of Italian-Jewish protagonists in Liberal Italy, during the First World War and the Fascist dictatorship until 1945. Drawing on ego-documents, contemporary journals and Jewish community archives, as well as records by the police and public authorities, it examines the tensions within the emancipation process between participation and exclusion. The book argues that the racial laws from 1938 did not represent the sudden end of an idyllic integration, but rather the climax of a long-term development. Social marginalization, the persecution of Jewish rights, and the assault on Jewish lives during fascism are analysed distinctly from the perspective of Jewish women. In spite of their significant influence on the transnational orientation of the Italian women's movement, their emancipation as women and Jews remained incomplete.

Abstract: This book provides a new interpretation of international law specifically dedicated to Indigenous peoples in the context of a climate justice approach. The book presents a critical analysis of past and current developments at the intersection of human rights and international environmental law and governance. The book suggests new ways forward and demonstrates the need for a paradigmatic shift that would enhance the meaningful participation of Indigenous peoples as fundamental actors in the conservation of biodiversity and in the fight against climate change. The book offers guidance on a number of critical intersecting and interdependent issues at the forefront of climate change law and policy – inside and outside of the UN climate change regime. The author suggests that the adoption of a critical perspective on international law is needed in order to highlight inherent structural and systemic issues of the international law regime which are all issues that ultimately impede the pursue of climate justice for Indigenous peoples. Giada Giacomini is an experienced researcher in international human rights law, international environmental law, climate change law and policy, and with an interest in climate vulnerable communities. She holds a PhD in Public, Comparative and International Law. She specializes in climate justice, critical legal studies and non-anthropocentric law. Upon completion of her PhD studies, she completed an Internship at the Independent Redress Mechanism of the Green Climate Fund. She is currently involved in several research projects dealing with ecosocial work, environmental conservation and Indigenous peoples, and climate litigation.

Abstract: “The volume offers an interesting range of perspectives on future possibilities beyond the present and the aftermath of neoliberalism. It is of interest to students, academics, and activists concerned with radical social and political transformation in contemporary societies.” –Gerard Delanty, Professor of Sociology and Professor of Social and Political Thought, University of Sussex, UK “This collection convenes contributions aiming to analyse, fight, and overcome the most threatening danger for humankind and democracy today: neoliberalism. The contributors make clear that there are arenas of struggle and resistance, spaces of hope, and actors invested in an emancipatory trajectory against the neoliberal processes of marketisation and commodification that leave the world in the hands of racketeers who are responsible for the unimaginable wealth of the few, and the extreme poverty of the many.” –Heinz Sünker, Rudolf-Carnap-Senior-Research-Professor, Bergische Universität of Wuppertal, Germany “Thinking Beyond Neoliberalism is an excellent volume that moves us beyond the dogmatic confines of neoliberalism to imagine possibilities for transition. The interdisciplinary tone and the fearless attempt to engage with the big questions of our time makes this book essential reading for anyone interested in building a better world.” –Susanne Soederberg, Professor of Global Development Studies, Queen’s University, Canada This book brings together leading academics and activists to address the possibilities for qualitative social change beyond neoliberalism, providing introductory essays on alternative societies, transition, and resistance. Bringing together discussions on universal basic income, actually existing communism, parecon, circular economies, workers co-operatives, ‘fully automated luxury communism,' trade unionism, and party politics, the volume provides one of the first scholarly interventions to systematically evaluate possibilities for transition and resistance across theoretical, political, and disciplinary traditions. Neal Harris is a Lecturer in Sociology at Oxford Brookes University, UK. Onur Acaroğlu is an Instructor at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, and a co-founder of the Free University of London (FUL), UK.

Abstract: “This is a timely and impressive intervention in the field of informality, state-society relations and economic precarity. As usual, Abel Polese, together with contributors, offers enormous bang for buck in his editing – an in-depth original conceptual approach drawing on political science and sociology, and careful selection of cases.” – Jeremy Morris, Aarhus University “A must read for global citizens facing informality and conflicting moral orders. A journey towards setting up the boundary between corruption and solidarity. Learn from this book and act for a better world.” – Ibrahim Sidi Zakari, Université Abdou Moumouni, Global Young Academy's member From the erosion of state legitimacy in Lebanon to the use of smartphones in Kyrgyzstan, from a Polish suburb to the music scene in Azerbaijan, this volume attempts to explain why, in a variety of world regions, a substantial number of people tend to ignore or act against state rules. We propose to look at informality beyond simplistic associations of the phenomenon with a single category such as "informal labour" or "corruption". By doing this, we propose to look for a correlation between the emergence, and persistence, of some informal practices and the quality of governance in a given area. We also suggest that a better understanding of the variety of informal practices present in a region can help conceptualising more adequate interventions and eventually improve the socio-economic conditions of its inhabitants. Abel Polese is a researcher, trainer, writer, manager and fundraiser with experience in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. He is interested in informal governance, development, mental health in academia an support for scholars at risk and researchers from the Global South. He is the author of “The SCOPUS Diaries and the (il)logics of Academic Survival: A Short Guide to Design Your Own Strategy and Survive Bibliometrics, Conferences, and Unreal Expectations in Academia”, a reflection on academic life and the choices and obstacles scholars face in the course of their career.

Abstract: Chapter 1: Mirrors of our Lady: Utopia in the Medieval Convent -- Chapter 2: These Most Afflicted Sisters: Old and New Futures in Exiled English Convents -- Chapter 3: Not Yet: Aspirational Women’s Communities Beyond the Convent -- Chapter 4: Convents of Pleasure: English Women’s Literary Utopias.
Abstract: English Women’s Spiritual Utopias, 1400-1700: New Kingdoms of Womanhood uncovers a tradition of women’s utopianism that extends back to medieval women’s monasticism, overturning accounts of utopia that trace its origins solely to Thomas More. As enclosed spaces in which women wielded authority that was unavailable to them in the outside world, medieval and early modern convents were self-consciously engaged in reworking pre-existing cultural heritage to project desired proto-feminist futures. The utopianism developed within the English convent percolated outwards to unenclosed women's spiritual communities such as Mary Ward's Institute of the Blessed Virgin and the Ferrar family at Little Gidding. Convent-based utopianism further acted as an unrecognized influence on the first English women’s literary utopias by authors such as Margaret Cavendish and Mary Astell. Collectively, these female communities forged a mode of utopia that drew on the past to imagine new possibilities for themselves as well as for their larger religious and political communities. Tracking utopianism from the convent to the literary page over a period of 300 years, New Kingdoms writes a new history of medieval and early modern women’s intellectual work and expands the concept of utopia itself.

Abstract: Palgrave Handbook of Critical Posthumanism is a major reference work on the paradigm emerging from the challenges to humanism, humanity, and the human posed by the erosion of the traditional demarcations between the human and nonhuman. This handbook surveys and speculates on the ways in which the posthumanist paradigm emerged, transformed, and might further develop across the humanities. With its focus on the posthuman as a figure, on posthumanism as a social discourse, and on posthumanisation as an on-going historical and ontological process, the volume highlights the relationship between the humanities and sciences. The essays engage with posthumanism in connection with subfields like the environmental humanities, health humanities, animal studies, and disability studies. The book also traces the historical representations and understanding of posthumanism across time. Additionally, the contributions address genre and forms such as autobiography, games, art, film, museums, and topics such as climate change, speciesism, anthropocentrism, and biopolitics to name a few. This handbook considers posthumanism’s impact across disciplines and areas of study. .

Abstract: This book represents a high-quality original contribution to the field, because it interrogates the performative aspects of social media activism and extends the notion of public space as a conflictual space. With case studies of social movements such as #NeverAgain, #ClimateStrike, and #BlackLivesMatter, this work is unmissable for scholars, activists, and practitioners. Professor Athina Karatzogianni, School of Media, Communication and Sociology, University of Leicester. Performing Media Activism in the Digital Age breaks new ground by conceptualizing activism as a performance extending beyond public space and the moment of public gatherings to consider the more extended view of social or political movements as mediated social connections. The book utilizes primary data extracted from social media platforms by applying a social network analysis (SNA) approach to the people, organizations, and media that are trying to advance their particular agendas, with an eye toward a better understanding of the ways in which social movements operate in a networked society. The goal of social network analysis is to identify social structures within a movement such as communities or clusters and it seeks to locate influence within those structures. Social network analysis as applied to media activism represents an interdisciplinary field that encompasses social psychology, sociology, as well as graph theory, which should suggest this book will be of interest to scholars and students in these and related fields. In the digital age, social network analysis represents a paradigm shift as analytical and data visualization tools can be applied in an interdisciplinary manner. By combining data science and sociology or cultural anthropology, one has the means to visualize networks of individuals and organizations engaged in a social movement, to see how movements are organized (structured) into communities, clusters, and niches, and to visualize power structures within social movements to see who is influencing a network over extended periods of time. Neil M. Alperstein is Professor Emeritus in the Communication Department at Loyola University Maryland, USA. He is the founding director of the Emerging Media graduate program. He is the author of Celebrity and Mediated Social Connections (2019), Advertising in Everyday Life (2003), co-author of two books on online education, in addition to contributing book chapters and publishing numerous research articles.

Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Navigating chronic crisis -- 3. Grammars of/in crisis -- 4. In and out of crisis: chronotopes of memory -- 5. Critique under duress: what is the role of critique and radical critical theory in the present of pathos?
Abstract: “(Un)timely Crises offers new pathways for thinking ‘crisis,’ this catchword of our time. In critical and interdisciplinary fashion, the book mobilizes the chronotope to give innovative insights into various crisis typologies, geographies, and temporalities. Through theory and examples, the authors show how to refine our understandings of and our modes of learning from crises. The book is ideal for everyone seeking to rethink the concept of crisis and the practice of critique.” - Miriam Meissner, author of Narrating the Global Financial Crisis: Urban Imaginaries and the Politics of Myth (2017). “This book offers invaluable insights into the spatio-temporal effects of the rhetoric of crisis. Concise in format, it provides a wealth of reflection about the ‘grammars’ of crisis by scholars from various fields. It is a must for every scholar who wants to understand the complex ramifications of the use of the term ‘crisis’ and an indispensable volume for these crisis-ridden times.” - Stijn De Cauwer, editor of Critical Theory at a Crossroads: Conversations on Resistance in Times of Crisis (2018). (Un)timely Crises explores how ‘crisis’—as a narrative, concept, grammar, and experience—structures time and space. This collectively written volume extends Bakhtin’s ‘chronotope’ to challenge mobilizations of crisis within neoliberal governmentality. The book explores how contemporary crises can trigger memories and traumas of earlier events as well as foster practices of resistance and alternative visions of the future. Drawing from across disciplines and geographical contexts, (Un)timely Crises reimagines the relation of ‘crisis’ with ‘critique’, proposing future trajectories for thinking and living in and through crisis.

Abstract: This book takes a fresh look at Tolkien’s literary artistry from the points of view of both linguistics and literary history, with the aim of shedding light on the literary techniques used in The Lord of the Rings. The authors study Tolkien’s use of words, style, narrative techniques, rhetoric and symbolism to highlight his status as literary artist. Dirk Siepmann uses a corpus stylistic approach to analyse Tolkien’s vocabulary and syntax, while Thomas Kullmann uses discourse theory, literary history and concepts of intertextuality to explore Tolkien’s literary techniques, relating them to the history of English fiction and poetry. Issues discussed include point of view, speeches, story-telling, landscape descriptions, the poems inserted into the body of the narrative, and the role of language in the characterization of the novel’s protagonists. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of literature, corpus linguistics and stylistics, as well as Tolkien fans and specialists. Thomas Kullmann is Professor of English Literature at the University of Osnabrück, Germany. He has published widely on Shakespeare and the English Renaissance, English children’s literature and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century novel. Dirk Siepmann is Professor of English as a Second Language at the University of Osnabrück, Germany. He has 25 years of experience in applied linguistics, with an extensive background in corpus linguistics and language teaching. He has authored 12 books, including two major monographs on translation studies and one on contrastive linguistics, and has co-authored or edited a further 14 volumes.

Abstract: “In weaving critical and comparative perspectives throughout a very lively and accessible exploration of urban governance and policy, Madeleine Pill’s book is a significant achievement. It will reward students at all levels for years to come, especially those who study cities for their political vibrancy and transformative potential.” - Professor Jonathan Davies, De Montfort University, UK “Governing Cities provides students across planning, public policy, politics and geography the conceptual tools to understand how cities are governed, and how they could be governed in more equitable, democratic and citizen-centred ways. Its use of historical and contemporary examples from a diverse set of countries means that it will become foundational for urban studies teaching and learning worldwide.” - Professor Robyn Dowling, University of Sydney, Australia “This is not just another public policy textbook. Governing Cities is an exploration of theory and practice. The reader is invited to consider how to understand politics and policymaking in relation to cities and how to improve them both. As such, it presents an ambitious discussion of the history, role, and governance of cities, which informs how to engage in urban politics to address the future of cities in relation to crises such as climate change and pandemics. It is a great example of how to make the study of policy jump off the page into real life.” - Paul Cairney, University of Stirling, UK “This is the book so many of us critically-minded urbanists have been waiting for! A clear, comprehensive, and refreshingly critical introduction to the governance of cities, urbanism, and the possibilities of equitable and just urban social change. Completely accessible to undergraduate students, yet analytically sophisticated and in-depth enough to also serve as a foundational text for graduate students.” - David Imbroscio, University of Louisville, USA This textbook helps us understand the political and policy-based challenges of how to equitably govern cities. It poses critical questions – about how cities are governed, by whom and for whom – and draws from a wide range of urban scholarship. The ‘how’ covers urban politics and the policy instruments which result. The ‘by whom’ addresses power relations within and beyond the city. The ‘for whom’ centres equity and the role of citizens and collective action in how we are governed. In addressing these questions, the book provides an overview of the core theories of urban politics and governance, explores what happens at different scales, and examines new forms of citizen activism. It is a unique introduction to students, policymakers and practitioners who want to understand and seek to improve urban politics and policy. Madeleine Pill is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield, UK.

Abstract: "The Novel as Network: Forms, Ideas, Commodities engages with the contemporary Anglophone novel and its derivatives and by-products such as graphic novels, comics, podcasts, and Quality TV. This collection investigates the meaning of the novel in the larger system of contemporary media production and (post-)print culture, viewing the novel through the lens of actor network theory as a node in the novel network. Chapters underscore the deep interconnection between all the aspects of the novel, between the novel as a (literary) form, as an idea, and as a commodity. Bringing together experts from American, British, and Postcolonial Studies, as well as Book, Publishing, and Media Studies, this collection offers a new vantage point to view the novel in its multifaceted expressions today."--

Abstract: This volume interrogates the intertwining of the local and the digital in environmental communication. It starts by introducing a wave metaphor to tease out major shifts in the field, and situates the intersections of local places and digital networks in the beginning of a third wave. Investigations that feature the centrality of place and digital communication platforms show how we today, as researchers and practitioners, communicate the environment. Contributions identify the need for critical approaches that engage with the wider consequences of this changing media landscape, unpacking local and global tensions in environmental communication research. This empirical case study collection from different parts of the world shows that environmental activists and citizens creatively use digital technologies for campaign purposes. It identifies new environmental communication challenges and opportunities, as well as practices, of environmental activists, NGOs, citizens and local communities, in the fight for social and environmental justice.

Abstract: This book is an invitation to question conventional and often misleading visions of globalization. No problem is global by nature: issues are transformed by the action of claims-makers to become ‘problems’ debated in supra-national forums, triggering policy choices and policy transformations. Contributions highlight how health issues, environmental issues and/or political issues are framed as global by a set of stakeholders (scientific experts, bureaucrats, political parties or actors, social movements, social networks, firms). As the volume maps the social logic behind the globalization of problems, it also presents an opportunity for the very cross-disciplinary collaboration it calls for: researchers mobilizing the “agenda-setting” paradigm of issue globalization and those working within the “social constructionist” model are both represented here, providing a unique opportunity to examine the dynamics of globalization from the perspectives of (political, media, economic) sociology, international relations, social movement studies, and beyond.

Abstract: This book is a comparative corpus-based study of discourse markers based on verbs of saying in English and French. Based on a wide comparable web corpus, the book investigates how discourse markers work in discourse, and compares their differences of position, scope and collocations both cross-linguistically and within single languages. The author positions this study within the wider epistemological background of the French-speaking ‘enunciative’ tradition and the English-speaking ‘pragmatic’ tradition, and it will be of particular interest to students and scholars of semantics, pragmatics and contrastive linguistics. Laure Lansari is Associate Professor at Paris Diderot University, France, where she teaches English/ French contrastive linguistics and translation

Abstract: This book provides the first sustained empirical evidence on the relationships between marriage migration and processes of integration, focusing on two of the largest British ethnic minority groups involved in these kinds of transnational marriages – Pakistani Muslims and Indian Sikhs. In Britain, and across Europe, concern has been increasingly expressed over the implications of marriage-related migration for integration. Children and grandchildren of former immigrants marrying partners from their ancestral ‘homelands’ is often presented as problematic in forming a 'first generation in every generation,’ and inhibiting processes of individual and group integration, impeding socio-economic participation and cultural change. As a result, immigration restrictions have been justified on the grounds of promoting integration, despite limited evidence. Marriage Migration and Integration provides much needed new grounding for both academic and policy debates. This book draws on both quantitative and qualitative data to compare transnational ‘homeland’ marriages with intra-ethnic marriages within the UK. Using a distinctive holistic model of integration, the authors examine processes in multiple interacting domains, such as employment, education, social networks, extended family living, gender relations and belonging. It will be of use to students and scholars across sociology, social anthropology, and social policy with a focus on migration, integration, family studies, gender, and ethnic studies, as well as policy-makers and service providers in the UK and across Europe.
