    Abstract: Modern mundane life is brimming with a variety of data-driven technologies that are supposed to augment the practices they are involved in. As humans bring these technologies into their lives in a process of domestication, they tame them and are simultaneously influenced by their presence. In combining domestication research and an empirical analysis of current, digital, and interconnected media, this issue examines the process of taming with an emphasis on practices. The contributions in this issue explore the use of digitally connected media such as vacuum robots, smart speakers, drones, and kitchen appliances with reference to the domestication paradigm from interdisciplinary perspectives including media studies, sociology, anthropology, and human-computer interaction

    Abstract: "Queer Democracy undertakes an interdisciplinary critical investigation of the centuries-old metaphor of society as a body, drawing on queer and transgender accounts of embodiment as a constructive resource for reimagining politics and society. Daniel Miller argues that this metaphor has consistently expressed a desire for social and political order, grounded in the social body's imagined normative shape or morphology. The consistent result, from the "concord" discourses of the pre-Christian Stoics, all the way through to contemporary nationalism and populism, has been the suppression of any dissent that would unmake the social body's presumed normativity. Miller argues that the conception of embodiment at the heart of the metaphor is a fantasy, and that negative social and political reactions to dissent represent visceral, dysphoric responses to its reshaping of the social body. He recognizes the social body's essential queerness, defined by fluidity and lack of a fixed morphology, spawns queer democracy, expressed through ongoing social and political practices that aim to extend liberty and equality to new social domains. Queer Democracy articulates a new departure for the ongoing development of theoretical articulations linking queer and trans theory with political theory. It will appeal to both academic and non-academic readers engaged in research on political theory, populism, US religion, gender studies, and queer studies"--

    Abstract: Given basic commitments to philosophize from lived experience and a shared underlying meliorist impulse, American philosophical traditions seem well-suited to develop nascent philosophical engagement with disability studies. To date, however, there have been few efforts to facilitate research at the intersections of American philosophy and disability studies. This volume of essays seeks to offer some directions for propelling this inquiry. Scholars working in pragmatist and other American traditions consider intersections between American philosophy and work in disability studies. Consisting of three broader sections, one set of essays considers how American philosophies from contemporary Mexican philosophy to classical American pragmatism inform descriptions of disability and efforts at liberation. The next offer accounts of how American philosophies disclose alternative conceptions of epistemic and ethical issues surrounding disability. Finally, a section considers "living issues" of disability, including essays on parenting, immigration policy, and art education. Throughout, these works provide direction and orientation for further investigation at the intersection of American philosophies and disability studies.

Peterson and Riley use racial resentment, black blame, and racial identity to investigate the extent to which racial attitudes influence vote choice, evaluations of Black Lives Matter, and attitudes toward public policies.     Abstract: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides protections against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Sexual orientation and gender identity, however, are excluded and LGBTQ citizens can be legally discriminated against in many fundamental areas that others take for granted as a legal right. The LGBTQ community in America comprises approximately 3.4 percent of the US population, or roughly 9 million citizens. Regardless of the size of the population, this book argues, all US citizens deserve the same rights granted under the US constitution - i.e. in addition to marriage equality, LGBTQ citizens deserve equal protection in employment, housing, medical decisions, military service, and adoption - to name but a few. Using social equity theory and intersectionality but written in an accessible style, this book demonstrates some of the ways in which LGBTQ citizens have been marginalized for their identity, and argues that the field of public administration has a unique responsibility to prioritize social equity. Discrete categories utilized by the US Census Bureau (male or female, heterosexual or homosexual), for example, must shift to a continuum to accurately capture demographic characteristics and citizen behavior. Evidenced based outcomes and disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ populations are carefully delineated to provide a legal rationale for a compelling governmental interest, and policy recommendations are provided - including overdue federal legislation to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Holmes bietet eine eingehende Untersuchung des alltäglichen Lebens und Leidens mexikanischer Migrant*innen, die in der modernen US-Landwirtschaft als Erntehelfer arbeiten. Der Anthropologe und Mediziner zeigt, wie Gesundheit und Gesundheitsversorgung durch die Schattenseiten der Konsumgesellschaft, durch Ressentiments gegen Einwander*innen und durch Rassismus leiden. Holmes' Material ist erschütternd und eindrucksvoll: Er wanderte mit seinen Begleiter*innen illegal durch die Wüste nach Arizona und wurde mit ihnen inhaftiert, bis sie abgeschoben wurden. Er lebte bei indigenen Familien in den Bergen von Oaxaca und in Farmarbeitslagern in den USA, baute Mais und Erdbeeren an und begleitete kranke Arbeiter*innen in Krankenhäuser. So glaubte das Wissenschaftlerpaar daran, dass nur durch Arbeit an der Kultur der Aufbau einer friedlichen Welt gelingen könne. Diesen Selbst- und Weltdeutungspraktiken spürt Thilo Neidhöfer am Beispiel ihrer Ehe nach.

Holmes' Material ist erschütternd und eindrucksvoll: Er wanderte mit seinen Begleiter*innen illegal durch die Wüste nach Arizona und wurde mit ihnen inhaftiert, bis sie abgeschoben wurden. Er lebte bei indigenen Familien in den Bergen von Oaxaca und in Farmarbeitslagern in den USA, baute Mais und Erdbeeren an und begleitete kranke Arbeiter*innen in Krankenhäuser. Diese »verkörperte Anthropologie« (Embodied Anthropology) vertieft unser theoretisches Verständnis dafür, wie schnell soziale Ungleichheiten in der Gesellschaft - und besonders im Gesundheitswesen - als normal und natürlich wahrgenommen werden.

    Abstract: "The Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides protections against discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Sexual orientation and gender identity, however, are excluded and LGBTQ citizens can be legally discriminated against in many fundamental areas that others take for granted as a legal right. The LGBTQ community in America comprises approximately 3.4 percent of the US population, or roughly 9 million citizens. Regardless of the size of the population, this book argues, all US citizens deserve the same rights granted under the US constitution - i.e. in addition to marriage equality, LGBTQ citizens deserve equal protection in employment, housing, medical decisions, military service, and adoption - to name but a few. Using social equity theory and intersectionality but written in an accessible style, this book demonstrates some of the ways in which LGBTQ citizens have been marginalized for their identity, and argues that the field of public administration has a unique responsibility to prioritize social equity. Discrete categories utilized by the US Census Bureau (male or female, heterosexual or homosexual), for example, must shift to a continuum to accurately capture demographic characteristics and citizen behavior. Evidenced based outcomes and disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ populations are carefully delineated to provide a legal rationale for a compelling governmental interest, and policy recommendations are provided - including overdue federal legislation to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.     Abstract: "Through conducting an ethnographic study about doctoral students from traditionally underrepresented groups who are learning to conduct ethnographic research, this volume offers unique insight into the challenges and experiences through which these students develop their skills and identities as qualitative researchers. Foregrounding the stories and perspectives of students from minority backgrounds including Latinx, Black, differently abled, and queer students, Graduate Students Becoming Qualitative Researchers identifies how the process of learning to conduct ethnographic research underpins doctoral students' success, confidence, and persistence in the academy. Chapters follow students during a one-year ethnographic research course during which they learn about ethnography, but also conduct observations, write field notes, interview participants, and gather artifacts. Offering important pedagogical insights into how ethnography and academic writing are communicated, the text also tackles questions of access and diversity within scholarship and highlights barriers to first-generation and minoritized student success, including impostor syndrome, stereotype vulnerability, and access to time, knowledge, and capital. This volume will prove valuable to doctoral students, postgraduate researchers, scholars, and educators conducting qualitative research across the fields of education and rhetoric, as well as the humanities and social sciences.     Abstract: "Political humor has been a staple of late-night television for decades. The Trump White House, however, has received significantly greater attention than that of past presidents, such as Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and even Bill Clinton. In response to Trump's strident politics, late-night comics, including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah and Jimmy Fallon, have sounded key policy notes, further blurring the boundary between news and satire. Weekly humorists, including John Oliver and Samantha Bee, extend the critique with in-depth probing of key issues, while Saturday Night Live continues to tap the progression from outrage to outrageousness. Using unique content analysis techniques and qualitative discussions of political humor, Farnsworth and Lichter show how late-night political humor, and these seven programs in particular, have responded to the Trump presidency. Employing a dataset of more than 100,000 late night jokes going back decades, these noted media scholars discuss how the treatment of Trump differs from previous presidents, and how the Trump era is likely to shape the future of political humor. The authors also employ public opinion survey data to consider the growing role these late-night programs play in framing public opinion and priorities.     Abstract: "Exploring the roles of students' pluralistic linguistic and transnational identities at the university level, this book offers a novel approach to translanguaging by highlighting students' perspectives, voices, and agency as integral to the subject. Providing an original reconsideration of the impact of translanguaging, this book examines both transnationality and translinguality as ubiquitous phenomena that affect students' lives. Demonstrating that students are the experts of their own language practices, experiences, and identities, the authors argue that a proactive translingual pedagogy is more than an openness to students' spontaneous language variations. Rather, this proactive approach requires students and instructors to think about students' holistic communicative repertoire, and how it relates to their writing. Robinson, Hall, and Navarro address students' complex negotiations and performative responses to the linguistic identities imposed upon them because of their skin colour, educational background, perceived geographical origin, immigration status, and the many other cues used to "minoritize" them. Drawing on multiple disciplinary discourses of language and identity, and considering the translingual practices and transnational experiences of both U.S. resident and international students, this volume provides a nuanced analysis of students' own perspectives and self-examinations of their complex identities. By introducing and addressing the voices and self-reflections of undergraduate and graduate students, the authors shine a light on translingual and transnational identities and positionalities in order to promote and implement inclusive and effective pedagogies.     Abstract: Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, formerly socialist countries have gone through manifold transformations, whilst remnants of socialism remain ubiquitous. The volume explores various spaces of the postsocialist landscape, presenting a mixture of real and imaginary spaces, of memory and nostalgia, of aesthetic and political symbolism, of the global East and the global South, of academic and essayistic writing. It casts a glance at the heterogeneous relics of socialism and their transformation in very different parts of the world. From the description of (post-)socialist interiors, façades, neighborhoods, parks, monuments, and objects towards the imaginary spaces of literature, the contributors describe the concreteness and intimacy of some of the places that span across and even beyond of what is left of the »second world« today.

    Abstract: "Colonial rule distorts a colony's economy and its society, and British rule was no exception. British policies led to a stratified American colonial society with slaves on the bottom and white settlers on top. The divided society functioned through laws that imposed rules and defined roles of the respective races. This occurred in other colonies too, often leading to strife that continues today. Especially since World War II the United States seems finally to have been able to remove many laws and practices that had created barriers between races in the divided society. Appeals to legitimacy, such as by abolitionists and the Civil Rights Movement, were essential to change laws from support of the divided society to instruments for disestablishing it. Thanks to the rule of law - another important British legacy -- the U.S. is much farther along than many former colonies in making progress. By highlighting the history of the interplay of two fundamental concepts, the divided society and the rule of law, and briefly contrasting the experiences of other former colonies, this book shows how the United States has made significant long-term progress, although incomplete, and ways for this to continue today"--

    Abstract: Wie und wozu nutzen soziale Bewegungen "Raum"? Sebastian Scholl nimmt sich dieser grundlegenden Fragestellung mit interdisziplinären Zugängen an.
