    Kurzfassung: Dieser Band mit 28 Portraits wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der MGH jüdischer Herkunft, verfasst von Mediävistinnen und Mediävisten, die teilweise selbst die Forschungsarbeit der Portraitierten im 21. Jahrhundert fortführen, zeigt eindrücklich, mit welchen Schwierigkeiten jüdische Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen im NS-Regime konfrontiert waren - bis hin zu ihrer Ermordung. Die Gelehrten hatten bedeutenden Anteil an den quellenkritischen Editionen der Zeugnisse des deutschen Mittelalters, die die MGH seit 1819 herausgeben. Ihre wissenschaftlichen Leistungen werden in diesem Band unter Beteiligung von 26 Autorinnen und Autoren gewürdigt. Einige der Portraitierten wie Philipp Jaffé, Ernst Perels oder Richard Salomon sähen sich selbst wohl ungern unter dem Label 'jüdische Mitarbeiter'. Dennoch waren ihrer aller Lebensläufe mehr oder weniger von antisemitischer Diskriminierung, Verfolgung und Emigration beeinflusst. Die historischen Zusammenhänge zur Entwicklung des Antisemitismus im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, vor allem im akademischen Umfeld, werden in einem einführenden Beitrag dargestellt, der die gesellschaftlichen, politischen und ideologischen Hintergründe beleuchtet. Eine eindrückliche Studie über die jüdischen Mitarbeiter und Mitglieder der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in der NS-Zeit bietet zudem Einblicke in eine Institution, die mit den MGH vielfältig verbunden ist

    Kurzfassung: Odeta Rudling analysiert in Von der nationalen Form zum nationalen Inhalt die Ausformung der sowjetischen Folklorepolitik, die zwischen 1940 und 1990 zur Übertragung und partiellen Übernahme des sowjetischen Modells in der litauischen SSR führte. Mit dem Fokus auf lokale Akteure und deren Rolle in diesem Prozess veranschaulicht sie sowohl die Techniken der Eliten als auch die inhaltliche Transformation der Volkskunst, die sich einerseits auf der Mikroebene des staatlichen Volksmusikensembles, andererseits auf der Makroebene der staatlichen Massenkultur manifestierte. Im Zentrum des Buchs steht die Frage danach, wie die Sowjetisierungsbestrebungen im Bereich der Folklorepolitik umgesetzt wurden und in welchem Verhältnis sie zur litauischen Nationsbildung standen. Vor dem Hintergrund der Forschung zur sowjetischen Nationalitätenpolitik demonstriert die Autorin, wie und weshalb die kulturpolitischen Maßnahmen zur Kontinuität der Neo-korenizacija beitrugen und damit auch der litauischen Nationsbildung mittels Sowjetisierung Vorschub leisteten. Die Stimulierung der nationalen Identität wird hier anhand zweier zentraler Erzählstränge aufgezeigt, mit der staatlichen folkloristischen Politik auf der einen und einer antimodernistischen ethnonationalistischen Bewegung auf der anderen Seite, die, obwohl sie sich getrennt voneinander entwickelten, im Spätsozialismus interagieren mussten und schließlich in den späten 1980er Jahren zur treibenden Kraft der Singenden Revolution wurden

    Kurzfassung: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers. Jonathan Duke-Evans looks at the history of fair play in Britain from earliest times to the present, asking whether it is in fact a British, or alternatively an English, characteristic at all - and if so, whether fair play still matters today? In An English Tradition?, Jonathan Duke-Evans explores the origins of the idea of fair play, tracing it back to the classical world and the Dark Ages, and finding its genesis deep within England's social structure. Charting its early development through both the tales of chivalry and the stories of popular legend, the book shows how fair play manifested itself in literature, the law, the Christian religion, and the family. It examines the way in which fair play was conceived during the ages of slavery and empire, and it proposes a new account of the birth of modern sport in the encounter between age-old popular games and the Victorian cult of amateurism. Taking in the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh manifestations of fair play, Duke-Evans offers contrasts and comparisons from cultures all around the world, and suggests new perspectives on the relevance of fair play in the twenty-first century.

Der Medizinhistoriker mit Schwerpunkt Psychiatrie und geschlechtliche und sexuelle Minderheiten schildert chronologisch und in strukturierter, gut lesbarer Sachlichkeit, häufig auch im Detail auf Beratungsfälle und Fachkontroversen eingehend, das breite Aufgabenspektrum und die neben Hirschfeld am Institut wirkenden Personen. Neben der auf ein üppiges Archiv gestützten Wissenschaftsarbeit beriet das Institut Hilfesuchende, erstellte Prozessgutachten und trat mit Aufklärungsschriften und -vorträgen sowie sexualpolitischen Initiativen etwa zur Abschaffung von ? 175 in Erscheinung.     Kurzfassung: Vom Globus zum Planeten! Der indische Historiker Dipesh Chakrabarty zählt zu den international einflussreichsten Wissenschaftlern, die sich in den letzten Jahren mit der Bedeutung des Klimawandels auseinandergesetzt haben. Der Klimawandel, so argumentiert er, stellt unsere althergebrachten Vorstellungen von Geschichte, Moderne und Globalisierung grundlegend in Frage. Die Aufgabe besteht daher darin, diese Konzepte auf den Prüfstand zu stellen und überhaupt die Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften mit neuen Ideen und Begriffen zu versorgen, damit sie den Herausforderungen des Anthropozäns gewachsen sind In seinem Buch taucht Chakrabarty tief ein in Geschichte und Philosophie und stellt kühne Überlegungen darüber an, wie das menschliche Denken und Leben zukünftig zu gestalten ist. Insbesondere erklärt er, dass wir zu einem besseren Verständnis sowohl unserer Herkunft als auch unserer Zukunft nur dann gelangen, wenn wir in der Lage sind, uns selbst aus zwei Perspektiven gleichzeitig zu betrachten: einer globalen und einer planetarischen, wobei letztere den Menschen absichtlich dezentriert. Erst auf diese Weise wird es möglich, in geologischen Zeiträumen zu denken sowie ein angemessenes Bild von der menschlichen Handlungsfähigkeit zu gewinnen. Angesichts der drohenden Naturkatastrophen ist es dafür höchste Zeit.

    Kurzfassung: "Disruption is about radical change-why it happens and how. Drawing on case studies ranging from the fourth century AD through the twentieth century, we look at how long-established systems of government and thought are challenged, how new institutions are created and new ideas become powerful. While paying attention to the underlying political, intellectual, economic and environmental sources of social disruption, we will see that no matter what similarities there might be between forces that shake different societies, these underlying factors do not dictate specific outcomes. The human actors are ultimately the most important, their decisions drive the conclusions that we see over time. Through our case studies we can explore successful and unsuccessful decision making, and the emergence of the ideas that conditioned human actions. We'll explore the development of Islam and of Christian doctrine, of constitutional thought, of socialism and social Darwinism. We'll look at how these ideas, all of them emerging on the fringes of society became central. We'll also have our eyes set on whether the sorts of disruptive forces we've seen in the past are present at this time, we'll look at the issues confronting the liberal democracies that have been the dominant political/economic forces on our planet in the last half century and see how they have come under stress in the last few decades and look at the possibility that we're facing a new period of disruption and at what we can learn from the past about how change can be constructive rather than destructive"--

    Kurzfassung: Das 1871 gegründete Kaiserreich gilt häufig als Hort der Obrigkeitshörigkeit, des Chauvinismus und des Militarismus. Dabei war es zugleich eine Zeit des Aufbruchs in die moderne Massendemokratie. Es hatte eine kluge Verfassung, ambitionierte Reformen wurden auf den Weg gebracht, einer der größten Umbrüche überhaupt nahm entscheidend an Fahrt auf: die Frauenemanzipation. Bei diesen Tendenzen, so Hedwig Richter, handelte es sich nicht einfach um Ungleichzeitigkeiten. Die vom Ideal der Gleichheit motivierte Inklusion der Massen hatte ihren Preis in einer Reihe von Exklusionen: Antisemitismus, Rassismus oder Misogynie. In ihrem Essay zeigt Richter, dass wir das 20. Jahrhundert mit seinen Extremen besser einordnen können, wenn wir die Reformzeit um 1900 in ihrer Komplexität begreifen

How could this happen in Stalinist society which prohibited feminist movements? Replacing the Dead finds an answer in previously secret archives that document the difficult decade after World War II, which killed 27 million Soviet citizens and the government's policy to increase fertility by promoting out-of-wedlock births. The result was an abortion battle between women, government, and Soviet legal and medical professionals that has continued for decades.

    Kurzfassung: "From their domestication to their taboo, the role of pigs in the ancient Near East is one of the most complicated topics in archaeology. Rejecting monocausal explanations, this book adopts an evolutionary approach and uses zooarchaeology and texts to unravel the cultural significance of swine from the Paleolithic to today. Five major themes emerge: The domestication of the pig from wild boar in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, the unique roles that pigs developed in agricultural economies before and after the development of complex societies, the raising of swine in cities, the shifting ritual roles of pigs, and the formation and development of the pork taboo in Judaism and, later, Islam. The development of this taboo has inspired much academic debate. I argue that the well-known taboo described in Leviticus reflects the intention of the Biblical writers to develop an image of a glorious pastoral ancestry for a heroic Israelite past, something they achieved by tying together existing food traditions. These included a taboo on pigs, which was developed early in the Iron Age during conflicts between Israelites and Philistines and was revitalized by the Biblical writers. The taboo persisted and mutated, gaining strength over the next two and a half millennia. In particular, the pig taboo became a point of contention in the ethno-political struggles between Jewish and Greco-Roman cultures in the Levant. Ultimately, it was this continued evolution within the context of ethnic and religious politics that gave the pig taboo the strength it has today"--

    Kurzfassung: "This is the story of how the church sought to establish norms for slave ownership on the part of ecclesiastical institutions and personnel and for others' behavior towards such slaves. The story begins in the New Testament era, when the earliest Christian norms were established and continues through the Late Roman Empire, the Germanic kingdoms, and the Carolingian empire, to the thirteenth-century establishment of a body of ecclesiastical regulations (canon law) that would persist into the twentieth century. Along with an analysis of the various policies and statutes, chronicles, letters, and other documents from each of the various historical periods provide insight into the situations of these unfree ecclesiastical dependents. The book stops in the thirteenth century, which was a time of great changes, not only in the history of the legal profession, but also in the history of slavery as Europeans began to reach out into the Atlantic. Although this book is a serious scholarly monograph about the history of church law, it has been written in such a way that no specialist knowledge is required of the reader, whether a scholar in another field or a general reader interested in church history or the history of slavery.     Kurzfassung: "This book proposes that late Ḥanafī legal scholarship in the early modern period secured a role for the Ottoman sultanic authority in the process of lawmaking. It finds the reigning arguments for an epistemic divorce between the domain of Islamic law and the authority of the Ottoman state untenable. This study demonstrates that Ḥanafī jurists sustained and expanded Ottoman sultanic authority through careful reformulations of their own school and their engagement with new notions of governance embraced by the Ottomans. This late articulation of the Ḥanafī legal tradition is not only essential to the understanding of the movement to codify Islamic jurisprudence in the late 19th century CE, and the role of the sultan in these transformations, but also to the sketching of looming contentious issues with regard to legitimate governance, lawmaking, and the future of the in modern sari'ah legal jurisdictions in majority Muslim countries"--

    Kurzfassung: "A Commerce of Knowledge: Trade, Religion, and Scholarship between England and the Ottoman Empire, c.1600-1760 tells the story of three generations of Church of England chaplains who served the English Levant Company in Aleppo, Syria, during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The book reconstructs the careers of its protagonists in the cosmopolitan city of Ottoman Aleppo, and brings to light the links between English commercial and diplomatic expansion and English scholarly and missionary interests: the study of Middle-Eastern languages; the exploration of biblical and Greco-Roman antiquities; and the early dissemination of Protestant literature in Arabic. Early modern Orientalism is usually conceived as an episode in the history of scholarship. By shifting the focus to Aleppo, A Commerce of Knowledge draws attention to connections between the seemingly aloof world of the early modern university and spheres of commercial and diplomatic life, tracing the emergence of new kinds of philological and archaeological enquiry in England back to a series of real-world encounters between the chaplains and the scribes, booksellers, priests, rabbis, and sheikhs whom they encountered in the Ottoman Empire. Setting the careers of its protagonists against a background of broader developments across Protestant and Catholic Europe, the book shows how the institutionalization of English scholarship, and the later English attempt to influence the Eastern Christian churches, were bound up with the international struggle to establish a commercial foothold in the Levant. It then argues that these connections would endure until the shift of British commercial and imperial interests to the Indian subcontinent in the second half of the eighteenth century fostered new currents of intellectual life at home."
