Sie knüpft die Gräser gruppenweise auf eine doppelt gelegte Kokosfaserschnur und bildet dabei Zierschlaufen. Nach Auskämmen des Schurzes legt sie ihn ihrer Tochter um und schneidet ihn auf die richtige Länge zu.
    Abstract: A girl from the atoll Tabiteuea collects reed grass (Cyperus laevigatus) from a salt-water pond. Back in the village her mother prepares the grass and then knots clusters of the grass together with a double strand of coconut fiber cord. The finished skirt is combed and the daughter models it while her mother cuts the grass to the desired length.

Dann bereitet der Mann mit Hilfe seines Pflanzstockes ein Erdloch, setzt den Steckling ein und füllt Erde nach, die er mit dem Pflanzstock feststampft.
    Abstract: An experienced man from the village of Tetua cuts a branch along with its aerial roots from a pandanus palm tree (Pandanus tectoris). He forces it between the adventitious roots of another palm in order to bind the pressed foliage together; then he proceeds to plant the "new" palm tree in the ground.

    Abstract: Includes the entire process of preparing this pandanus dish beginning with the men who harvest the pandanus fruit in the bush near the village of Buariki. The women of the village cut the fruit, steam it in an earth oven, and knead the resulting mash into flat cakes. The cakes are placed in a bake oven overnight and then set out in the sun for about two weeks. After another brief period in the oven the hard cakes are broken up and pandanus leaf packages are filled with the pulverized substance.

    Abstract: Während des Niedrigwassers fängt ein Mann aus Tetua Köderfische im Lagunenwatt. Der Köder wird an einem einfachen Ködergerät (Kokosnußschale) befestigt und in das Schlupfloch eines Krebses versenkt. Hat der Krebs angebissen, wird er mit der Hand aus seiner Höhlung herausgezogen.
    Abstract: A man from Nonouti catches bait fish in the lagoon water, then uses a baiting apparatus to lower the fish into the hiding place of the Lysiosquilla maculata. As soon as one of these crabs has taken the bait the man grabs and removes the animal with his bare hands.

    Abstract: Two songs are presented by Godi Kossat, a popular singer of the Diongor people of Chad. The first selection praises some of the mighty and rich men at Mukulu, while the second song celebrates the famous Rabeh who conquered parts of Eastern Sudan at the end of the nineteenth century. Godi Kossat is accompanied by two musicians playing the five-stringed harp or kundinge.

Annähen von Randgurten, hölzernen Spannknebeln sowie von Haltegurten, Einschneiden und Umsäumen von Ösen, Verbreitern der vorderen und hinteren Zeltbahn mit Zwickeln, Einnähen des Mittelgurtes, Einschieben des Firstholzes und Einsetzen zweier Hauptstützen sowie Nachspannen aller Schnüre und Befestigen der seitlichen Zeltvorhänge.
    Abstract: A tent is being made. Four woven, dark tent-widths (cf. film E 1094) are first spread out on the floor, pulled tight with the help of pegs, and sewn together, from the centre out, with white woollen thread. Border straps are then sewn on, first front and back and then the sides. Wooden toggles for the guy-ropes, and harness, are sewn on and eyelets cut in and hemmed round. The front and back tent-widths are widened in the centre by a gusset. The strap for the central joint, running horizontally to the tent-widths, is then sewn on. The ridge-pole is then pushed under the canvas, which is held taut by guy-ropes and pegs, and then lifted by two main props. The process is finished when all ropes have been checked for tautness and the front and rear curtains have been attached.

On top of this she sputs on a loose garment worn round the body which is held together by two fibulas, one sash, one silver belt and sleeve suspenders. Finally the bangle, the pendants for chest and forehead are put on.

Das Einkneten von Anis in den Teig, das Formen der Ringbrote und Brotpuppen sind Frauenarbeit. Die fertigen Ringbrote werden auf Holzstangen im oberen Stockwerk über Monate gelagert.
    Abstract: The farmer's wife makes the pre-dough from leaven, 6 kg rye flour and water. The farmer kneads the dough (60 kg rye flour, pre-dough, 600 g salt, eggs, 25-27 l water), heats the oven with larch and birch wood and loads the oven. An dieser werden mit einer zweiten Schnur dicht nebeneinander in der Mitte einzelne große blaue Federn des Ara und zu beiden Seiten kürzere gelbe Schwanzfedern des Japim-Vogels befestigt. Die fertige Federreihe wird um einen geflochtenen breiten Kopfreifen, der außerdem mit einem Band aus kleinen, verschiedenfarbigen Federn umwickelt wird, gebunden und so getragen.
    Abstract: Several big blue Ara feathers are fastened with a cotton thread in the middle of a cotton string stretched as a cord of a bow, followed on both sides by smaller yellow tail feathers of the japim bird, a member of the family Icteridae. The string of feathers is removed from the bow and attached on to a broad plaited headband around which a band of small variously coloured feathers is wrapped.

    Abstract: Mit einem Buschmesser bricht ein Mann aus großen Schneckenhäusern rechteckige Plättchen heraus, glättet sie auf Stein und bohrt mit einem Quirlbohrer in jedes Plättchen zwei Löcher. Neben und halb übereinandergestapelt befestigt er sie mit einem durch das obere Loch geführten Faden an einer als Bogensehne aufgespannten Schnur, dann bindet er die Sehne um die Taille. Dadurch werden die Plättchen fächerartig gespreizt. Er führt einen zweiten Faden durch die freien Löcher und fixiert so die Plättchen.
    Abstract: With a bush knife a Waurá man breaks from large snail-shells small rectangular plates and polishes them on a stone. Using a drill with a point made of a steel needle broken in the middle of the eye, turned by the palms, he makes two holes in each plate, one at the upper end, the other at the lower end. He then attaches the plates, partly covering each other, to a string put on a bow by passing a thread through the upper holes, removes the string from the bow, and puts it round his waist so that the plates are spread out like a fan. He fixes the plates in this position with a thread passed through the lower holes, then he tries the necklace.

    Abstract: Nach der täglichen Arbeit tanzen die Männer auf dem Dorfplatz und üben sich dort paarweise im Ringkampf. Zur Eröffnung umkreisen sie einander in gebückter Haltung, dann werfen sie sich auf die Knie nieder, ergreifen gegenseitig die rechte Hand und versuchen, den Gegner mit der anderen Hand zu umfassen und umzustoßen.
    Abstract: After day's work the men dance on the village square and practise wrestling two by two. The contenders first circle each other with a slouching attitude, then they go down on their knees and holding each other by the right hand each tries to clasp his left hand round his opponent's back and to push him down. The aim of the fight is to throw the opponent on the back to the ground. Only at contests between different tribes however the fights are fought to a finish, practice fights are usually stopped as soon as the superiority of one wrestler is evident.

    Abstract: The orchestra of the Mukulu tribe (Djonkor-Gera) is arranged in traditional formation. Five flute-players, three of them also shaking rattles, make up the right, three drummers the left wing. In the middle stands an old man holding the sacred wind-instrument parri which is used only on cultic occasions (cf. also Fuchs [20]). The orchestra plays the traditional mounring-dance ombre kunto. In front of the orchestra dance a man armed with a spear and three women. The mourning-dance is characterized by sequences of stamping steps.

    Abstract: A woman in the village of Tetua lets fresh palm juice boil in four coconut shell containers on hot rocks in an earth oven pit. The thickening liquid is constantly poured together so that after many hours of cooking, only one container of syrup (kamaimai) remains. Another coconut flask is filled with the syrup.

Das trockene Heu wird zu einem Streifen zusammengeharkt, der mit Hilfe von Pferden, die ein langes Brett ziehen, zusammengeschoben und in dem Erntewagen nach Hause gefahren wird. Mit Zeitdehnung.

Dissolving of the yeast cakes in warm water, the mixing of the dough which includes Spring wheat bread-flour, sugar, salt, and melted lard, the raising of the dough, its kneading and raising again, the shaping of the loaves, which are then raised in the wooden dough tray, and, finally, the baking of the bread in a wood-fired oven.

    Abstract: Imitating adult dances is one of the favorite games of Dangaleat children. The children imitate dances not only of their own ethnic group but also of the neighbouring Arabs and Dadjo. In the afternoon ten girls at the age of three to eight years have come together in a homestead. They clap out the rhythm of the dance and sing. The first two dances imitated by the children are Arab dances. The next two dances are imitations of Dangaleat dances, and the fifth dance is composed of figures of two different Arab dances. The sixth dance is again a Dangaleat dance, danced by the adults in couples. Naturally the girls dance the women's part. The seventh and last dance is once more an Arab dance: the girls repeat the second dance.

    Abstract: In Korbo singt der Bulala-Spielmann Dungus Preislieder auf reiche Männer der Dangaleat und auf die Schönheit der Bulala- und Araberfrauen. Er spielt dazu auf einer einsaitigen Kukuma und wird von einem Rasselspieler begleitet.
    Abstract: The Bulala musician Dungus moves the bow, with the left hand he strikes the string. For rhythmic accompaniment to the 〈i〉kukuma〈/i〉 the musician's companion shakes a calabash rattle. The instrumental music, however, is only accompaniment to the song which is the main presentation. Dungus sings, in Bulala and in Arab, songs in praise of several rich Dangaleat men and in praise of the beauty of Bulala and Arab women. Each epithet pronounced by the singer is acclaimed with a quaver uttered by one of the women present.The women's quavering plays an important part in the performance: it stimulates the singer and celebrates the person praised. The film presents the song of praise at full length.

    Abstract: Near Azrou: a new turban cloth is folded and put on. This is done while standing. A bare-headed man folds, together with an assistant, the turban cloth which is 5 metres long and 80 cm wide in such a way that the cloth overlaps 6-fold and finally 12-fold in longitudinal folds. The assistant is also needed for the putting-on of the turban - he holds the end of the cloth. The cloth is wound around the head clockwise and it is only at the end that the still bare middle part of the head is covered.

    Abstract: These displays of horsemanship, under the name of fantasia, are brought here in conjunction with a national festival (Ifrane, August 30, 1964). The tents of the participants are pitched near the riding-track. A water-seller and a drummer are visible. The individual groups ride to the starting-point. The film shows five displays from varying groups on the 500 m long course. First, each rider shows his own individual tricks, then the group fires a closed rifle salvo and reins the horses in hard at the end of the track. Each group then returns to the starting-place.

A long channel is hacked out of the ice, terminated by two semicircular holes. The fish are driven towards the channel by the use of noise made by beating with Plümperkeule and are caught with large landing nets drawn to and fro along the channel.

    Abstract: Aufbau eines waagerechten Griffwebgerätes durch den Zeltbesitzer, seine Frau und seine Mutter bei Ifrane: Scheren der Kette, Spannen der Kettfäden, Einbinden der Litzenschlaufen, Auswechseln der Pflöcke und Befestigen der Kettfäden, Aufhängen des Litzenstabes an einem Dreifuß, Weben einer etwa 75 cm breiten Zeltbahn aus heller Schafwolle.
    Abstract: In front of the tent, a man, his wife and his mother are busy erecting a horizontal weaving apparatus. First the warp is set up. The woollen warp yarns are drawn in a figure of eight around three pegs driven into the ground; the two outer pegs represent the later warp beam and the front or fabric roller; the third, smaller peg takes the place of the heald, and with its help the loops are tied up. The pegs are then replaced and the warp yarns fastened and tied up. With the aid of two pegs in the ground, warp beam and front roller are kept separate, and the warp is stretched horizontally. A tripod is placed between them, from which the heald is hung. After attaching the weft yarn to the shuttle, the young woman plaits in a cord to serve as width indicator, arranges the warp yarns and begins to weave a tent-width. Sheds are formed with the aid of the separator staff and the weaver's board, which is alternately laid flat and upright.

    Abstract: Nahe dem Dorf Buariki werden Jungpflanzen von Taro (Cyrtosperma chamissonis) auf scheibenartig gerollte Stränge aus Pandanus-Blättern gesetzt und mit Sand nebst welken Pandanus-Blättern versehen. Größere Pflanzen werden in ihren "Topfbeeten" mit Schichtungen von Humus, Gründung, verrottenden Pandanus-Blättern, Grubenschlamm und Sand gepflegt. Geerntet wird die Knolle einer etwa dreijährigen Pflanze. Die Arbeiten werden von Männern verrichtet.
    Abstract: Demonstrates the procedures used in cultivating taro (Cyrtosperma chamissonis) in fresh water bogs on the atoll Tabiteuea. Very young plants are fertilized with pandanus leaves while larger taro plants are cultivated with pandanus leaves as well as humus, mud, and sand. At harvest time a three-year-old plant is cut and separated from the bulb.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Djaya singt ein Mädchenchor, begleitet von zwei Trommeln, vier verschieden gestimmten Flöten und einer Rassel, Preislieder auf bekannte Persönlichkeiten. Junge Männer tanzen in einem äußeren und Mädchen in einem inneren Kreis um Chor und Orchester.
    Abstract: In the centre of the dancing-place stand the orchestra and the girls' chorus. The orchestra consists of two drums, four differently pitched flutes and one rattle. The girls sing songs in praise of prominent persons. The male dancers, about twenty boys, proceed in a parallel inner circle. Boys and girls perform different steps. Later on the dance changes and boys and girls both at a time perform the same combinations of steps. The particular steps have changed also. Quavers uttered by the girls and shouts uttered by the boys contribute to the acoustic animation of the dance. The film presents the "napa"-dance at full length.

Einzelne Tänzer treten in den Kreis, tanzen mit ihren jeweils rechten Nachbarn und treten wieder zurück, während die Nachbarn wiederum mit ihren rechten Nachbarn tanzen.
    Abstract: The dambio dance is performed at the annual feast of the margai for this clan in Chad. Mostly women participate in the dance, but it is evident that they have drunk millet beer before the performance. Eventually the dancers lose the rhythm, some quarreling takes place, and the dance dissolves in part.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Ambasanda tanzen mehrere, in Reihen stehende Gruppen von Mädchen, Frauen und Männern zum Rhythmus zweier Trommeln und zum Gesang der Frauen, wobei sich Frauen- und Männergruppen teilweise gegenüberstehen.
    Abstract: The "am haraba"-dance was originally a war dance of the Sudan-Arabs, but since the failure of the warfare it has become a highly popular entertainment dance, performed mainly at great festivals and in honour of persons of high rank. The "am haraba"-dance presented in this film was performed by the Hemat-Arabs inhabiting Ambasanda village at the foot of the Gera Massif in eastern Tchad. A cylindrical double membrane drum (nugara) and a wooden mortar are attached to a pole on the dancing-place of the village. The drum is beaten by two boys, while a third boy uses the wooden mortar as a drum. To the rhythm of the drums the women sing songs in praise of the several rich and famous men of the country. For dancing the women form into different groups, each group forms in a line, and all the women perform the swaying movements ("bounce") characteristic of the "am haraba"-dance. In the beginning of the dance the different groups of women are composed according to the dancers' social status. The male dancers form also different groups, three or four men dance together in a line, holding in their hands a stick, a sword or a knife. Each group of men dances in front of a group of women, men and women move towards one another, and the figure ends with a kind of mutual bow, the women swinging their plaits. At irregular intervals the men change their partners and pass over to another group of women. In the sequel the dance becomes a little confused because the groups partly dissolve and other groups are formed. In the course of the film, the women's chorus sings two different songs. The film presents about three thirds of the dance.

    Abstract: The "al beher"-dance is an entertainment dance of the Hemat-Arabs. In the film the dance is performed by the inhabitants of Ambasanda village at the foot of the Gera Massif in eastern Tchad. The women and girls of the village are arranged in a semicircle on the dancing-place. The dancers' position in the semicircle corresponds to their social prestige, the women having the highest prestige occupying the places in the middle of the semicircle. The women clap their hands and sing a song in praise of several rich and famous men of the country. Two girls step out of the women's line and wait for two boys approaching them and the forming pairs with them. Boy and girl hold each other by their arms and perform the figure of the "al beher"- dance, a combination of long and high leaps with "leap-turn". The couples go on dancing until two other women step out of their line in order to relive them. Getting tired, the boys retire, two other boys take their places and continue dancing with the waiting girls. The film presents an excerpt from the "al beher"-dance which comprehends all phases and all figures of the dance.

    Abstract: The weaver Uda Tori makes preparations for weaving. Then he starts weaving. He passes the shuttle carrying the weft through the shed, depresses with his foot the treadle to open the shed for the next throw, and beats up the weft with the comb. When the weaving has reached a certain length, the weaver fits the harness into the next notch. Finally the harness is so far from him that he must take it back. On this occasion he rolls up the cloth on the take-up roller and shortens the warp. The Dangaleat weave only white, nature-shade cotton, they have no knowledge of weaving patterns.

    Abstract: The film shows the playing of the shawm 〈i〉libo〈/i〉, a "clarinet with a tuning-loop". The instrument is played by a member of the Haussa Colony at Bitkin, a town in the Central Tchadian Massif. The shawm 〈i〉libo〈/i〉 consists of a milletstem with a reed cut out at one end. Before putting the instruments to his lips the player wraps the cord tightly around his fingers. He holds the instrument diagonnally in front of his mouth and takes the reed between his lips. Alterations in pitch are obtained by blowing or inhaling air, by modifying the length of the reed with the tuning-loop, and by opening and closing the lower opening with the thumb. The Haussa use this instrument to call the names of their friends and girl friends by transposing the syllables of the spoken names into tones.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Djaya tanzen junge Männer in Kreisformation, ihre Turbantücher schwenkend, um eine Gruppe von Preislieder singenden Mädchen und zwei Trommlern. Zwischen den einzelnen Tänzen singt der Chor zur Begleitung der Trommeln.
    Abstract: In the centre of the dancing-place stand two drummers and the girls' chorus. The drums are cylindrical drums with double membrane attached by bracing cords. The girls clap their hands and sing songs in praise of prominent persons. The dancers, about twenty boys, move anti-clockwise around the girls' chorus and the drummers. They wear long turban scarves which they wave in the air when swinging their arms. There is a close connection between the girls'singing and the boys movements: the steps of the boys are directed by the songs. The first dance is followed by a passage showing only the chorus singing and the beating of the drums. Another "djele"-dance follows, accompanied too by singing, rhythmical hand-clapping and the beating of the drums. The dancers circle once more around the group of the girls and wave their turban scraves, but thei steps are modified. Shortly after the dance stops, the girls intone another song and the third "djele"-dance begins. The complicated complications of steps are performed by the dancers on the spot; they are evidently differing from those of the preceding dances. All "djele"-dances are presented at full length.

Beim Klammwirt (St. Peter) werden den Kühen Glocken umgehängt, und der Leitkuh wird ein Kranz auf den Kopf gebunden. Am Nachmittag des zweiten Tages treffen die Herden auf den heimatlichen Höfen ein. Abends laden dann die Hofleute Freunde und Nachbarn zum "Kühkemma" ein.

Die Vorsängerin singt zunächst eine Strophe vor, die von den anderen wiederholt und mit einem Refrain versehen, nachgesungen wird. In einer Pause trinken sie Hirsebier.
    Abstract: Shows excerpts of mourning songs as performed by the wailing women of the Mukulu tribe in Chad. They begin the songs soon after the death and sing intermittently until the burial. Of the four women shown here, two have shaved their heads as a sign of mourning. The singers strike iron hoe blades together for rhythmic accompaniment.

Ein schwarzes Schaffell schützt die Beine des Reiters. Als Sitzunterlage werden eine alte Decke, eine Zierdecke sowie ein roter Teppich aufgelegt.

    Abstract: Junge Männer versammeln sich zu dem von einer Nachbar-Ethnie übernommenen Goli-Maskentanz. Vor dem Männerchor treten paarweise dreimal Masken unterschiedlicher Bedeutung (z. B. Tiermasken) auf. Die Sänger verlocken die Masken mit Gesang und Rasselschlagen zum Tanzen. Zwischen Masken und Chor entsteht dabei eine rege Interaktion.

    Abstract: Ein erfahrener Bootsbauer von Buariki pflockt Leinen in den Abmessungen des benötigten Segels auf den Erdboden, schiebt eine Segelmatte darunter und näht sie, umgeschlagen um die Leinen, fest. Mit Pandanus-Blattstreifen wird gesäumt. Nachdem Rahe, Spiere und Schote befestigt sind, wird das Segel in verschiedenen Bootsmanövern ausprobiert.
    Abstract: An experienced boat builder from the atoll Onotoa demonstrates the techniques used to attach a mat sail to a boat with strips of pandanus leaves. After the spar and boom are in place the sail is tested with various boat maneuvers.

    Abstract: At the edge of the village of Tetua a man climbs a coconut palm tree, harvests young coconuts, and frees them from their fiber shells. He drinks the liquid from one of the nuts after boring a hole in it. Finally he cuts the nut in half and uses an Asaphis mussel shell to eat the coconut meat.
