    Abstract: Knowledge of folk custom and folk belief can help to explain ways of thought and behavior in modern America. American Folklife, a unique collection of essays dedicated to the presentation of American tradition, broadens our understanding of the regional differences and ethnic folkways that color American life. Folklife research examines the entire context of everyday life in past and present. It includes every aspect of traditional life, from regional architecture through the full range of material culture into spiritual culture, folk religion, witchcraft, and other forms of folk belief. This collection is especially useful in its application to American society, where countless influences from European, American Indian, and African cultural backgrounds merge. American Folklife relates folklife research to history, anthropology, cultural geography, architectural history, ethnographic film, folk technology, folk belief, and ethnic tensions in American society. It documents the folk-cultural background that is the root of our society

    Abstract: Eine Pennsylvania-Deutsche einer mennonitischen Gemeinschaft bäckt Brot nach Altvordern-Art. Sie löst Hefe im warmen Wasser auf, mischt den Teig aus Weizenmehl, Zucker, Salz und Schweineschmalz, läßt ihn aufgehen, knetet ihn, formt Laibe und bäckt sie im Holzherd.
    Abstract: A Pennsylvania German woman is baking bread. Dissolving of the yeast cakes in warm water, the mixing of the dough which includes Spring wheat bread-flour, sugar, salt, and melted lard, the raising of the dough, its kneading and raising again, the shaping of the loaves, which are then raised in the wooden dough tray, and, finally, the baking of the bread in a wood-fired oven.

November) in Familie, Nachbarschaft, Schule und auf Stadtebene: Kürbisse werden ausgehöhlt und als Laterne abends vor das Haus gestellt. Maskenumzüge (als Teufel, Tier, Tod, Soldat usw.) mit Gabenheischen und Bestrafung (z. B. Beschmieren der Häuser mit Seife) bei Verweigerung der Gabe, Masken-Musikparaden.
    Abstract: This film documents the celebration of Halloween in the town of State College, Central Pennsylvania, on Monday, October 31, 1966. The film depicts typical Halloween activities in several families, in an elementary school and in the community, including an early-evening parade on the main street of the town. The film was especially produced as a contribution to the international project of the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica on children's customs and games in various countries.
