    Abstract: This volume addresses the 'question of power' in current constructivist securitisation studies. How can power relations that affect security and insecurity be analysed from both a transdisciplinary and historical point of view? The volume brings together contributions from history, art history, political science, sociology, cultural anthropology and law in order to determine the role of conceptions of power in securitisation studies, which has tended to be dealt with implicitly thus far. Using conceptual theoretical essays and historical case studies that cover the period from the 16th to the 21st century, this book portrays the dominant paradigms of critical security studies, which mostly stem from the field of international relations and see the state as a major focal point in securitisation, in a new light

    Abstract: Durch die Analyse der Beziehungen zwischen NGOs, dem UN-Sicherheitsrat und den Menschenrechten wird in diesem Buch argumentiert, dass sowohl NGOs als auch der UN-Sicherheitsrat die Menschenrechtssemantik selektiv in Bezug auf die Orte und Akteure, die sie betreffen, anwenden. Es beobachtet Wissen und Macht als Kräfte, die sich gegenseitig beeinflussen, was eine Erklärung dafür sein kann, wie Global Governance funktioniert. Darüber hinaus untersucht das Buch die Idee, dass Recht, abgesehen von der Durchdringung traditioneller Strukturen, von der Basis der Gesellschaft in Richtung institutioneller Bereiche aufsteigen kann. In diesem Zusammenhang schlägt der Autor vor, dass das Zusammenspiel zwischen nichtstaatlichen Akteuren und politischen Institutionen die Bottom-up-Prozesse im Zusammenhang mit der Gesetzgebung und der Gestaltung politischer Entscheidungen fördert. In Anbetracht der kritischen Probleme, die sowohl die NRO als auch der UN-Sicherheitsrat in Bezug auf Repräsentation und Reaktionsfähigkeit haben, stellt die Arbeit fest, dass die Beziehung zwischen ihnen auf eine ausschließende, technokratische und arkane Weise stattfindet.

Although there are key challenges facing democracy-including concerns about electoral interference, adherence to the rule of law, and the freedom of the press-it is not clear that these difficulties threaten political legitimacy. Such ambiguity derives in part from the contested nature of the concept of legitimacy, and from disagreements over how to measure it.0This volume reflects the cutting edge of responses to these perennial questions, drawing, in the distinctive NOMOS fashion, from political science, philosophy, and law.     Abstract: Die Dissertation stellt 26 Biographien und Migrationsgeschichten von Migranten aus 11 verschiedenen Ländern vor, die zwischen 2011 und 2015 nach Deutschland kamen. Basierend auf einer einjährigen Forschung, die 2015/2016 im Münsterland (NRW) durchgeführt wurde, verfolgt die Arbeit einen Individuums-orientierten Ansatz, um die Mehrdimensionalität von Migration herauszustellen, Migranten aus dem Bild einer passiven Masse herauszulösen, das häufig in der politischen und medialen Welt propagiert wird, und sie als autonome Akteure vorzustellen. Die Biographien werden anhand von narrativen Interviews detailgenau skizziert, um nach den Ursachen von Migrationsentscheidungen zu fragen. So zeigt diese Arbeit, dass neben offensichtlichen Ausreisegründen, wie Krieg, Verfolgung und Diskriminierung, auch komplexe biographische Ereignisse und lebensgeschichtliche Erfahrungen Einfluss auf Migrationsentscheidungen haben.

    Abstract: "Im islamischen Recht finden sich viele Ansätze zu sozial- und wirtschaftsethischen Fragen. Das bekannteste Beispiel hierfür sind die zakāt-Pflichtabgabe auf Geld- und Sachvermögen sowie das ribā-Verbot, das allgemeinhin als Zinsverbot interpretiert und übersetzt wird. Erst eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Grundfragen des Geldes ermöglicht es aber, das Wirtschaftsdenken im islamischen Recht vom Grund her zu erschließen. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit den Fragen nach dem Geld, seinen morphologischen Charakteristika, seiner gesellschafts- und marktbezogenen Relevanz sowie seiner vertragstypologischen Einordnung. Mit diesem Anliegen lenkt der Autor die Perspektive auf ein Thema, das in der gegenwärtigen Debatte um „islamisch-ökonomische“ Vorstellungen relativ wenig wissenschaftliche Beachtung gefunden hat, und stellt zugleich die Weichen für ein neues Verständnis der gesamten „islamischen Wirtschaftstheorie“. Seine konzeptionellen Ausführungen zu den Grundfragen des Geldes basieren auf zahlreichen Primärquellen, die im binnendisziplinären Vergleich und mithilfe der Ansätze der neoklassischen Ökonomie untersucht wurden. Die daraus resultierenden Erkenntnisse beziehen sich insbesondere auf den Gütertausch (muʿāwaḍa), das ribā-Verbot sowie die Kooperationsformen šarika und muḍāraba."

    Abstract: "The term "interest" lacks a precise antonym. In English, we have "disinterested" and "uninteresting," but we want for a term that denotes robust opposition to interest. The same appears to hold true in every other language (as far as we know). Interest's missing antonym reflects not merely a widespread lexical oversight, but a misrecognition of interest's complete and exact meaning. More importantly, the idea that interest has no opposite expresses a certain refusal to acknowledge the power of the impulse to extinguish interest, for the self and for others. Why then do we foreclose interest's possibility, degrade our (and others') capacities to experience interest, and destroy interest's objects? Why do we decline what interest proffers - which includes creative and subjective being, thinking, and relating - in favor of more primitive modes of survival, thoughtlessness, and nonbeing? Why do relationships - with ourselves, with others, with objects - toward which genuine interest draws us seem sometimes, if not often, unbearable? These questions are difficult. Their answers, even more so. Misinterest: Essays, Pensées, and Dreams attempts to approach them in an honest way, without making them fascinating, mysterious, boring, obscurantist, or fascinatingly mysteriously boringly obscurantist. Outwardly, Misinterest is concerned with dreams and forgetting and Eros and soaring dogs and groups and suicidal suburban teenagers and sex and jury duty and Nazis and fathers and hatred and holy parrots and fundamentalists and plagues and other things that may or may not be interesting. Ultimately, however, it seeks, like Jules Renard, "en restant exact" (in remaining true/real), to shed light on the establishment of misinterest, missingness, and mystery where and when they need not be, and, thus, on the psychic, familial, and political forces that compel us not to be when and where we ought"--

Liquid life is metaphor and apparatus that discusses the consequences of thinking, working, and living through liquids. It is an irreducible, paradoxical, parallel, planetary-scale material condition, unevenly distributed spatially, but temporally continuous. It is what remains when logical explanations can no longer account for the experiences that we recognize as part of "being alive."Liquid Life references a third-millennial understanding of matter that seeks to restore the agency of the liquid soul for an ecological era, which has been banished by reductionist, "brute" materialist discourses and mechanical models of life.     Abstract: Amicus curiae participation in international courts is steadily growing since the late 1990 despite lack of clarity on the concept's nature, function and utility in international dispute settlement. Does amicus curiae infuse international judicial proceedings with alternative views, including the public interest in a case, as often advocated by NGOs? Does it increase the legitimacy and transparency of international dispute settlement, or the coherence of international law? Or is it an unhelpful impostor that impedes negotiated solutions and derails the proceedings at the expense of the parties to advance its own agenda? By way of an empirical-comparative analysis of the laws and practices of the ICJ, the ITLOS, the ECtHR, the IACtHR, the IACtHPR, WTO panels and the Appellate Body, and investment arbitration the dissertation examines the status quo of amicus curiae before international courts and tribunals to determine if the current amicus curiae practice is of added value to international proceedings and international dispute settlement in general. The dissertation shows that there is no common concept of international amicus curiae, but that amicus curiae before the international courts examined share a few characteristics. A proposed functional systematization highlights overlaps and diverging uses of the concept before international courts and helps scholars and practitioners to assess the opportunities and limits of the concept. Analysis of the concept's current regulatory framework and its substantive effectiveness reveals a hesitation in particular by courts with a strong adversarial tradition to take into account the views of a non-party despite the positive experience with the concept in regional human rights courts. The dissertation concludes that neither the expectations nor the concerns attached to amicus curiae participation in international proceedings have materialized. It argues that the concept can contribute to improved decisions and decision-making in international dispute settlement if regulated and used properly

    Abstract: This study is the first to analyse the manifold interrelations between armed conflicts and the human and natural environments both historically and sociologically. While most research to date has dealt with this topic primarily with regard to environmental destruction caused by acts of war or armament in peacetime, this publication goes one step further by highlighting the historical changes to this complex interrelationship with concrete examples: from the Second World War in Europe and Asia via the classic proxy war in Vietnam to the current asymmetric wars in South Asia. At the same time, it focuses on systematic questions: How do environments influence armed conflicts? How do wars change environments? And how do complete ‘war landscapes’ (warscapes) emerge, in which war and militarisation permanently change the relations between people and their environment?

    Abstract: This book documents the findings and recommendations of research into the question of how IT laws should develop on the understanding that today's information and communication technology is shaped by cloud computing, which lies at the foundations of contemporary and future IT as its most widespread enabler. Die vorliegende Dissertation analysiert das Integrationsverhalten chinesischer Zuwanderer in Berlin anhand einer Fallstudie, die interessante Erkenntnisse bringt: Die Zuwanderer fühlen die Notwendigkeit, ihre chinesische Identität zu rekonstruieren allerdings mit dem Ziel, sich damit in Deutschland besser zu integrieren.     Abstract: "Editors Harris and Berry first conceived of this discussion -- one of the history and relationship between slavery and sexuality -- at a conference at the University of Texas at Austin in October 2011. The meeting encouraged a series of healthy dialogues with the general public, seasoned scholars, and those just beginning to learn about and research these topics of slavery and sexual intimacy. A select group of scholars met again in the fall of 2012 in New York to continue the conversation. This volume is a result of these ongoing conversations, with additional scholarly voices added as the project evolved. The volume places sexuality at the center of slavery studies in the Americas (the United States, Carribbean, and South America). In many mainstream histories of slavery, the editors argue that scholars have marginalized or simply overlooked the importance of sexual practices. But sexual intimacy comprised a core terrain of struggle between slaveholders and the enslaved. The essays explore consensual sexual intimacy and expression within slave communities, as well as sexual relationships across lines of race, status, and power. Contributors explore sexuality as a tool of control, exploitation and repression, and also as an expression of autonomy, resistance, and defiance. Essayists include Jim Downs, Sowande' Mustakeem, Bianca Premo, Marisa J. Guentes, Trevor Burnard, Jessica Millward, Leslie Harris, Thomas Foster, David Doddington, and Stephanie Jones-Rogers.     Abstract: "Across the borderlands of the early American Northeast, New England, New France, and native nations deployed women with surprising frequency to the front lines of wars that determined control of North America. Far from serving as passive helpmates in a private, domestic sphere, women assumed wartime roles as essential public actors, wielding muskets, hatchets, and makeshift weapons while fighting for their families, communities, and nations. Revealing the fundamental importance of martial womanhood in this era, Gina M. Martino places borderlands women in a broad context of empire, cultural exchange, violence, and nation building, demonstrating how women's war making was embedded in national and imperial strategies of expansion and resistance. As Martino shows, women's participation in warfare was not considered transgressive; rather it was integral to traditional gender ideologies of the period, supporting rather than subverting established systems of gender difference"--

    Abstract: Michael Andindilile in The Anglophone Literary-Linguistic Continuum: English and Indigenous Languages in African Literary Discourse interrogates Obi Wali's (1963) prophecy that continued use of former colonial languages in the production of African literature could only lead to 'sterility', as African literatures can only be written in indigenous African languages. In doing so, Andindilile critically examines selected of novels of Achebe of Nigeria, Ngũgĩ of Kenya, Gordimer of South Africa and Farah of Somalia and shows that, when we pay close attention to what these authors represent about their African societies, and the way they integrate African languages, values, beliefs and cultures, we can discover what constitutes the Anglophone African literary-linguistic continuum. This continuum can be defined as variations in the literary usage of English in African literary discourse, with the language serving as the base to which writers add variations inspired by indigenous languages, beliefs, cultures and, sometimes, nation-specific experiences

    Abstract: "Hendrik Hartog uses a forgotten 1840 case to explore the regime of gradual emancipation that took place in New Jersey over the first half of the nineteenth century. In Minna's case, white people fought over who would pay for the costs of caring for a dependent, apparently enslaved, woman. Hartog marks how the peculiar language mobilized by the debate -- about care as a "mere voluntary courtesy" -- became routine in a wide range of subsequent cases about "good Samaritans." Using Minna's case as a springboard, Hartog explores the statutes, situations, and conflicts that helped produce a regime where slavery was usually but not always legal and where a supposedly enslaved person may or may not have been legally free"--

    Abstract: "Drawing on historical research, ethnography, and original interviews, Beyond Chrismukkah describes and analyzes how interfaith Christian-Jewish families were understood, viewed, and treated in the larger American social milieu from 1965 through the present. [Mehta] shows how during the latter half of the twentieth century, interfaith marriage was subject to much the same dynamic and dramatic change that took place generally in American culture: from 1965 to 2010, the rate of intermarriage for American Jews rose from less than 10% to its current rate of between 40-50%. She argues that the understanding of ethnicity, and, in particular, the turn to multiculturalism in the 1990s, generated significant cultural and political change over time."--

    Abstract: This is a meticulous sociopolitical analysis of the problems of social inequality and poverty in Latin America (especially in the most advanced countries) by a former senior research associate of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik). The investigation is characterised by a comparative perspective which, among other things, enables the reader to make comparisons with Germany and the USA. This study particularly focuses on the political capabilities of the lower classes to obtain more social justice and critically discusses current theories on the development of middle-class societies in Latin America.
    Abstract: Spezifikum des Buches ist die sorgfältige sozio-politische Untersuchung der Probleme sozialer Ungleichheit und Armut in Lateinamerika (insbesondere der am höchsten entwickelten Länder) in dezidiert komparativer Perspektive. So werden u.a. systematisch Daten und Informationen präsentiert, die Vergleiche mit Deutschland sowie den USA ermöglichen. Besonderes Interesse gilt der Analyse der komplexen lateinamerikanischen Unterschichtenwirklichkeit im Hinblick auf die Frage, inwieweit mehr Chancengleichheit durchgesetzt werden könnte. Gängige Thesen über die Entstehung von Mittelschichtgesellschaften in Lateinamerika werden kritisch diskutiert.

Über die Kombination aus prozessanalytischen Fallstudien zu Entscheidungsverfahren über infrastrukturelle und extraktive Projekte in Kolumbien, Panama und Chile und deren vergleichender Analyse werden sowohl Wirkungszusammenhänge als auch kausale Muster aufgezeigt. Sonderrechte sind weniger ausschlaggebend als erwartet. Stattdessen wird die Bedeutung akteursspezifischer und interaktionsbasierter Voraussetzungen für die Wahrung indigener Selbstbestimmung betont: Formalisierte interne Handlungsmodi und Mobilisierungsressourcen indigener Organisationen sowie vorangehende Interaktionen mit staatlichen Institutionen sind entscheidend.
    Abstract: (How) Do autonomy and consultation rights foster indigenous self-determination? The book presents answers to this question, with its author proposing a comparative, methodologically innovative approach that takes particular account of the (often informal) patterns of interaction between indigenous groups and other stakeholders and examines them with network-analytical methods. By combining process tracing for within-case analyses of decision-making processes on infrastructure and extractive projects in Colombia, Panama and Chile with a cross-case analysis, the author demonstrates both causal mechanisms and causal patterns, and shows that indigenous rights are less decisive than expected. Instead, the book stresses the relevance of actor-specific and interaction-based conditions for safeguarding indigenous self-determination. In this respect, formalised internal modes of action and mobilisation resources of indigenous organisations are vital, as are prior interactions with public authorities.
