    Abstract: Auf einem Tanzplatz des Dorfes Sara wird von zwei jungen Männern eine Felltrommel geschlagen, Frauen singen Preislieder und tanzen in mehreren Reihen, nach ihrem sozialen Status angeordnet, um die Trommler herum. Später kommen junge Männer hinzu.
    Abstract: On the dancing-place of Sara village the nugara, a cylindrical double skin drum, is beaten by two young men. One of the young men beats on nugara. To the rhythm of the drum the women sing songs of praise. The "am haraba"-dance is performed anti-clockwise around the drum. The women form into different lines according to their social status. They swing their arms and advance with small rhythmic steps, then they perform swaying movements, swinging their long plaits intensely. In the beginning only women dance, later on young men join in the dance. The young men are equipped with long millet stems in place of the lances borne by the men at this dance. The film only presents an excerpt from the "am haraba"-dance which however, comprehends all characteristic phases of the dance.

    Abstract: Der Bulala-Spielmann Abakar Mohammed spielt die Fiedel 〈i〉kukuma〈/i〉. Mit der rechten Hand führt er den Bogen, mit der linken Hand greift er die einzige Saite ab. Zur rhythmischen Begleitung der 〈i〉kukuma〈/i〉 betätigt sein Begleiter Sakin die Rassel. Sakin trägt einen aus Dumpalmenbast geflochtenen Kopfschmuck, der teilweise mit Aluminiumfolie verkleidet wurde und mit Straußenfedern ausgestattet ist. Im Rhythmus der Musik wirft er während des Spiels den Kopf hin und her. Die Instrumentalmusk ist jedoch nur Unterhaltung für den Gesang, der im Mittelpunkt der Darbietung steht. Abakar singt in der Sprache der Bulala Preislieder auf den "Sultan" von Korbo und auf die Schönheit der Frauen des Landes.
    Abstract: The Bulala musician Abakar Mohammed plays the fiddle kukuma. With his right hand he moves the bow, with the left hand he strikes the single string. For rhythmic accompaniment his companion Sakin shakes the rattle. Sakin wears a headdress plaited from palm bast, covered partly with aluminium foil and decorated with ostrich feathers, and as he plays he moves his head to and fro to the rhythm of the music. The instrumental music, however, is only accompaniment to the song which is the main presentation. Abakar sings, in Bulala, songs in praise of the "Sultan" of Korbo and of the beautiful women of the country.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Tialo-Ibeda spielt das aus fünf verschieden gestimmten Flöten bestehende Festorchester in traditioneller Aufstellung zunächst einzeln den jeweiligen Part. Es folgt das Zusammenspiel der fünf Flöten, wobei der erste Flötist zusätzlich eine Rassel betätigt.
    Abstract: The traditional Dangaleat flute-orchestra consists of five flutes differently pitched. Each flute consists of a bamboo cylinder with three holes burnt in and a notch at the upper end. The musician holds the flute with the palm of his left hand while his fingers stop the holes when required. The man playing the longest flute shakes at the same time with his right hand a rattle. In order to facilitate the analysis of the orchestra, the instruments in the first part of the film are demonstrated individually. Each musician plays his part of the piece of music played in ensemble in the second part of the film. The position of the musicians is fixed by tradition. The musicians are dressed in the ever-day clothes of Dangaleat men.

    Abstract: Men and women in festive attire have assemble for the mourning-dance on one of the dancing-place in the Kenga village of Barama. On the border of the dancing-place stands the orchestra which consists of five flutes differently pitched, three rattles and three drums. In the second part of the film the dancers are joined by several Arab women, who can clearly be distinguished from the Kenga women. The film shows two excerpts from the dodi-dances which, however, comprehend all essential sequences and steps of the dance.

    Abstract: In the afternoon of the burial day the villagers assemble for the mourning dances before the homestead of the deceased. The dance is accompanied by the orchestra which consists of five flutes differently pitched, three rattles and three drums. The mourning dances, called dodi or mutu, are charaterized by stamping steps. The steps are carried out very quickly, and the dance requires a considerable amount of energy.

    Abstract: Women and girls of Sara village are arranged in a semicircle on the dancingplace, clapping their hands and singing songs of praise. In front of the semicircle a couple take their place for dancing. The boy places himself by the right side of the girl, takes her arm and performs with her the figure of the "al beher"-dance, a combination of long and high leaps with "leapturn". The film only presents excerpts from the dance which, however, show the characteristic figure several times in detail.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Tialo-Ibeda tanzen Frauen in einem inneren und Männer in einem äußeren Kreis in unterschiedlichen Tanzschritten um die von zwei Trommlern geschlagene, zweifellige Zylinder-Trommel und eine weitere Trommel. Der erste Tanz geht in den zweiten über, bei dem sich Männer und Frauen gegenüberstehen.
    Abstract: The nugara, a cylindrical double membrane drum, is attached to a pole in the centre of the dancing-place and is beaten by two men. One man beats on the centre of the membrane, the other on the border of the membrane. The second drum is another cylindrical double membrane drum; the drummer holds it between his legs and must bend over it when playing it. The "zinugi"-dance is performed around the drummers who always remain in the centre of the performance. The dancers form into two circles which move anticlockwise, the women and girls forming an inner, the men an outer circle. Men and women perform different steps. During the dance the women utter quavers and cries, some cries are also uttered by men. Finally the dance dissolves, but the drummers go on playing and the dancers pass from the "zinugi"-dance to another dance called "nugarafok". At the "nugarafok"-dance men and women face each other in two rows. The step of the dance consists of leaps performed with both legs. The dancers come up to the camera and make a gesture of homage as it is usually made by the Sudan-Arabs in honour of a person of high rank. (In this case the dancers pay homage to the European standing behind the camera.) Both entertainment dances are presented at full length.

    Abstract: The "bardjat"-dance is an entertainment dance of the young people. In the centre of the dancing-place stand the drummers, whose number varies in the course of the dance. The "bardjat"-dance is performed in two circles which move anti-clockwise. The women and girls are arranged in an inner circle according to their social status. The boys form an outer circle, but as there are only a few boys taking part in the dance the circle cannot be formed. The dance figure of the girls consists of small rhythmic steps with a bending of the knees and a swinging of the arms. The steps are concluded by a half body-turn, then a series of steps performed on the spot follows, concluded also by a half body-turn, this time in direction of the dance. The figure of the boys corresponds to that of the girls, only the half body-turn is performed in opposite direction so that during the following sequence male and female dancers face each other. The dance is modified by the arrival of a group of boys and girls led by the chief holding a flag in his hand. In the course of the dance the women perform their movements more and more distinctly, the steps are almost leapt and the movements of the arms become more and more intense. The boys, however, keep their slow step up to the end. The film presents the "bardjat"-dance at full length.

    Abstract: Die Gruppe der Tänzer und die Trommler mit dem Chor der singenden und klatschenden Frauen stehen sich gegenüber. Beim Tanz bilden die Tänzer einen Kreis, schwingen ihre Turbantücher und zeigen eine Sequenz von Sprüngen.
    Abstract: A large number of villagers have come together on one of the dancing-places of Djaya. In the centre of the dancing-place stand the dancers, about twenty boys, on the border, close together, the onlookers. On the otherside of the dancing-place are two drummers and the girl's chorus. The girls clap their hands and sing, in a chorus for one voice with a solo singer, songs in praise of prominent persons. For the "napa"-dance the dancers form into a circle which moves anti-clockwise. The figure of the dance consists of a sequence of steps combined with a waving of the long turban scarves. The girls' chorus has repeatedly difficulty in keeping time. Several women improvise spontaneous dance steps on the border of the dancing-place. It is evident that all the people are stimulated by the large quantity of beer they have drunk in the course of the day. The film presents only excerpts from the "napa"-dance.

    Abstract: Um zwei Trommler tanzen in einer Kreisformation junge Frauen und Mädchen. Junge Männer und Burschen bilden, wie die Frauen und Mädchen nach sozialem Status angeordnet, einen äußeren Kreis. Die Tanzfigur besteht aus einer Sequenz komplizierter Schritte mit abschließender Körperdrehung.
    Abstract: Young people of Djaya, chiefly women and girls, have come together for dancing the "parama"-dance. In the centre of the dancing-place sit two drummers. The "parama"-dance is performed in circular formation which moves anti-clockwise. The boys form into an outer, the girls and women into an inner circle, both drawn up according to their social status. The figure of the dance consists of a series of complicated steps and ends with a complete body-turn. In the course of the dance the number of the female dancers increases so that the women's circle must partly be doubled. The film presents the "parama"-dance at full length.

Beim Tanz Sa stehen sich die Reihen der Frauen und Männer zunächst gegenüber, danach folgt eine Phase des Paartanzes.
    Abstract: The first dance presented in the film is the "djersiss"-dance, a highly popular entertainment dance. The women are arranged in a semicircle, clap their hands and sing songs of praise. The dance is performed in couples. The second dance presented in the film is the entertainment dance "sa". The women sing and clap their hands, the men are aligned in a facing line.

Der in wesentlichen Ausschnitten gezeigte Tanz wird von einem Orchester aus fünf verschieden gestimmten Flöten, drei Rasseln und drei verschiedenen Trommeln begleitet.
    Abstract: Men and women in festive attire make up two circles for the darangaba-mourning-dance on one of the dancing-places in the Kenga village of Barama. The men make up the outer, the women the inner circle. Both circles move with rhythmic steps anti-clockwise, the women swinging their arms, the men brandishing their weapons and uttering war-cries. During the dance one of the men performs a pantomimic sham attack, other men occasionally step into the women's circle and parade before them brandishing their weapons. The orchestra is not to be seen in the film because its out of the visual field of the camera. It consists of five flutes differently pitched, three rattles and three drums. The film only shows excerpts from the darangaba-dance which, however, comprehend all essential sequences and steps of the dance.

    Abstract: Women and girls are arranged in a semicircle on the dancing-place of Sara village. They clap out the rhythm of the "goshele"-dance and sing songs in praise of several rich and famous men of the country. A couple take their places for dancing, the two partners facing each other. For some measures the boy and the girl perform swaying movements on the spot, then both at a time perform a high leap and stamp their right or left foot on the ground. The high leap is performed three times, then the dancers pass with stamping steps by each other and each goes to the place previously occupied by his partner. This figure is always repeated, it is performed in the film by different male and female dancers. A particularly well performed figure is acclaimed by the women with quavering.

    Abstract: On one of the dancing-places in Tialo-Ibeda village stands the traditional orchestra which consists of five flutes of different pitch, one rattle and three drums. Three parna (cultic wind-instruments) have been added. The orchestra tunes up the bidjerua-dance and men and women in festive attire take their places for dancing. The men, placing themselves according to their age class, make up an outor circle which moves anti-clockwise, the women, drawn up also according to their age class, three inner circles. Men and women execute different steps. The men walk with rhythmic steps; the women first throw their legs backwards in the air and then perform a series of leaps. The women do not leap all at the same time, but some of them begin and the next join so that the movements spreads clockwise, that is, in opposite direction to the dancers. The film shows the bidjerua-dance completely.

    Abstract: In front of a building of the Sultan of Mao, the six musicians of the court orchestra lay a melody in honour of the Sultan. The principal instrument of the orchestra is an oboe called algaita. To play the algaita the player blows up his cheeks and takes a provision of air which allows him to play the long melody without intermission. The second wind-instrument of the orchestra is a long tuba called gaschi, made from plate. The tones of the instruments of the orchestra are four different drums, beaten with wooden drumsticks or with the hand. The musicians are dressed in the typical clothes worn by the male Muslims in Chadian towns. The film only presents an excerpts from the piece of music.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Tialo-Ibeda stehen Frauen und Mädchen in einem Halbkreis und singen ein Preislied auf reiche und berühmte Männer ihres Landes und klatschen dazu. Drei Männer wählen sich jeweils Partnerinnen aus und tanzen mit ihnen.
    Abstract: Women and girls are arranged in a semicircle. They clap out the rhythm of the "kifet"-dance and sing songs of praise, at the same time performing swaying movements and swinging the long plaits to the rhythm of the dance. Three men approach the women with dancing steps and choose partners from among them by placing themselves in front of the woman of their choice. The rhythm of the dance now accelerates and the couples perform accordingly rapid movements. After this short sequence the original rhythm is taken up again, the men withdraw and choose other women for their partners. Getting tired, the dancers are replaced by other men.

Das Instrument dient nur zur Unterhaltung und wird ausschließlich von Männern gespielt.
    Abstract: Issa Yussufami, a Kanembu, plays the guitar tjegeni. The instrument has three strings of horse-hair which the player plucks with his right hand while the fingers of his left hand strike the strings. The tones of the tjegeni imitate the melody of words and it is possible for the player to "speak" with the tjegeni. The instrument is only used for entertainment and is played by men only.

    Abstract: In the Kenga village of Barama an old man has died. Early on the burial day several women of the village assemble at the entrance-gate to the homestead of the deceased. They sing the traditional mourning-songs, accompanying the songs by drums and iron hoe blades which they strike against one another. Near female relatives of the deceased have shaved their heads and put ashes on them as a sign of mourning. Many of the women wear mourning belts of white cotton strips, the widow of the deceased is to be known by the thick cloth belt round her waist. She dances absent-minded, other women too improvise dancing steps. Some of the women wail. Later on a group of women dances the dodi-dance, one of the Kenga mourning-dances.

Die Instrumentalmusik ist jedoch nur Untermalung für den Gesang, der im Mittelpunkt der Darbietung steht. Der Spielmann singt in der Sprache der Daza ein Preislied auf den Sultan von Mao.
    Abstract: The musician Hassan Tjari, a Daza, plays the fiddle finini. He holds the instrument between his right knee squared and his foot. With his right hand he moves the bow, with the left he strikes the single string of the finini. The instrumental music, however, is only accompaniment to the song which is the main presentation. The musician sings, in Daza, a song in praise of the Sultan of Mao.

    Abstract: Among the hemat-arabs boys are circumcised at the age of eight to twelve years, the operation being performed in public, in the presence of all menan women of the village. Before the circumcision, which always takes place early in the morning, the boy washes thoroughly. Then the men and women of the village assemble, gathering aroung thy boy to be circumcised, dressed in a new garment. A man stands behind the boy and holds him. During the circumcision a woman besprinkles the boy with milk. The operation is performed by the oldest man of the lineage. A circular disk has been prepared, carved from a calabash sheard, with a hole cut out in the centre. The boy's foreskin is passed through the hole and underbound with a cotton thread. The circumciser then cuts off the foreskin at one cut. The skin of the penis is now put back and fixed with two long thorns. The mother of the circumcised puts the foreskin cut off on to one of her toes. The film then shows the circumcision of another boy. After the operation two muslim fukaha conjure the wound, spitting after each blessing symbolically on the wound and handling the beads of their chaplets in their fingers. When the circumcision is over, women and girls danc in front of the house where the circumcised boys have retired. The film presents excerpts from the "al beher" and "goshele"-dances.

    Abstract: The carver has selected a tree suitable for carving the stool. He fells the tree and cuts from its trunk the desired length of timber which he then roughly trims with an axe. The further carving is done in the village. The carver's only tool is an adze which he may furnish with two hafts of different length. Moreover the iron blade may be hafted either horizontally or vertically. The carver first shapes the seat, then the stem and finally the base of the stool. Once the carving is done, he sets up a hearth ventilated by a bag bellows, heats the irons in the fire and then decorates the stool. Finally he rubs ground peanuts on the wood and smoothes the seat with a stone. Stools of this kind are used by women only.

    Abstract: Among the Kaba wrestling matches associated with a dance are a kind of "rite de passage", the passage from the age class of boys to that of adult men. In the beginning the film shows one of the wrestlers colouring his body with red earth-colour and putting on the goatskin, the traditional wrestler's clothing. The wrestling matches are preceded by a dance performed on the central place, presented in the film in excerpts. On the border of the place stands the orchestra which consists of two drums and one xylophone. After the dance the wrestling matches take place, the boys wrestling by pairs. During the match the girls dance around the wrestlers and utter quavers to encourage them. The three excerpts from wrestling matches presented in the film show that the wrestlers follow certain definite rules.

    Abstract: The female potter digs up the clay and transports it in a leather sack to her dwelling. There the clay is filled into a container, mixed with water and left to stand. The modelling of the water jug is done on the swelling technique, mallets out of unburnt clay are used for this purpose. Whilst forming, horse dung is added. The neck of the water jug is pulled or rather shaped by hand with fitted-on clay rims. With the help of a small board and a damp cloth the jug is smoothed and finally an ornament is carved onto it. After two days the baking takes place in the pit. Sheep and cattle dung are used as burning material.

    Abstract: Brahim, the artisan dies strips of goat's leather in black, red and yellow colour. The stiffening for the sheath are cut out of cardboard and wound with red leather. The leather ist stuck with glue onto cardboard pieces. Onto the red leather pieces of black leather are stuck, stitched on at the back and the seam covered by a dress-seam wich ends by a dress-knot. Likewise at the back, a loop is fixed on as an upper-arm ring. The dagger's handle, enfaced by bound material pieces, Brahim covers with red leather. In the form of drilling, Brahim turns the upper-arm ring out of thin leather strips and to complete it, pulls it through the intended loop of the dagger sheath.

    Abstract: The orchestra of the Mukulu tribe (Djonkor-Gera) is arranged in traditional formation. Five flute-players, three of them also shaking rattles, make up the right, three drummers the left wing. In the middle stands an old man holding the sacred wind-instrument parri which is used only on cultic occasions (cf. also Fuchs [20]). The orchestra plays the traditional mounring-dance ombre kunto. In front of the orchestra dance a man armed with a spear and three women. The mourning-dance is characterized by sequences of stamping steps.

    Abstract: In the centre of the dancing-place stand the orchestra and the girls' chorus. The orchestra consists of two drums, four differently pitched flutes and one rattle. The girls sing songs in praise of prominent persons. The male dancers, about twenty boys, proceed in a parallel inner circle. Boys and girls perform different steps. Later on the dance changes and boys and girls both at a time perform the same combinations of steps. The particular steps have changed also. Quavers uttered by the girls and shouts uttered by the boys contribute to the acoustic animation of the dance. The film presents the "napa"-dance at full length.

    Abstract: The Bulala musician Dungus moves the bow, with the left hand he strikes the string. For rhythmic accompaniment to the 〈i〉kukuma〈/i〉 the musician's companion shakes a calabash rattle. The instrumental music, however, is only accompaniment to the song which is the main presentation. Dungus sings, in Bulala and in Arab, songs in praise of several rich Dangaleat men and in praise of the beauty of Bulala and Arab women. Each epithet pronounced by the singer is acclaimed with a quaver uttered by one of the women present.The women's quavering plays an important part in the performance: it stimulates the singer and celebrates the person praised. The film presents the song of praise at full length.

    Abstract: Imitating adult dances is one of the favorite games of Dangaleat children. The children imitate dances not only of their own ethnic group but also of the neighbouring Arabs and Dadjo. In the afternoon ten girls at the age of three to eight years have come together in a homestead. They clap out the rhythm of the dance and sing. The first two dances imitated by the children are Arab dances. The next two dances are imitations of Dangaleat dances, and the fifth dance is composed of figures of two different Arab dances. The sixth dance is again a Dangaleat dance, danced by the adults in couples. Naturally the girls dance the women's part. The seventh and last dance is once more an Arab dance: the girls repeat the second dance.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Ambasanda tanzen mehrere, in Reihen stehende Gruppen von Mädchen, Frauen und Männern zum Rhythmus zweier Trommeln und zum Gesang der Frauen, wobei sich Frauen- und Männergruppen teilweise gegenüberstehen.
    Abstract: The "am haraba"-dance was originally a war dance of the Sudan-Arabs, but since the failure of the warfare it has become a highly popular entertainment dance, performed mainly at great festivals and in honour of persons of high rank. The "am haraba"-dance presented in this film was performed by the Hemat-Arabs inhabiting Ambasanda village at the foot of the Gera Massif in eastern Tchad. A cylindrical double membrane drum (nugara) and a wooden mortar are attached to a pole on the dancing-place of the village. The drum is beaten by two boys, while a third boy uses the wooden mortar as a drum. To the rhythm of the drums the women sing songs in praise of the several rich and famous men of the country. For dancing the women form into different groups, each group forms in a line, and all the women perform the swaying movements ("bounce") characteristic of the "am haraba"-dance. In the beginning of the dance the different groups of women are composed according to the dancers' social status. The male dancers form also different groups, three or four men dance together in a line, holding in their hands a stick, a sword or a knife. Each group of men dances in front of a group of women, men and women move towards one another, and the figure ends with a kind of mutual bow, the women swinging their plaits. At irregular intervals the men change their partners and pass over to another group of women. In the sequel the dance becomes a little confused because the groups partly dissolve and other groups are formed. In the course of the film, the women's chorus sings two different songs. The film presents about three thirds of the dance.

    Abstract: The film shows the playing of the shawm 〈i〉libo〈/i〉, a "clarinet with a tuning-loop". The instrument is played by a member of the Haussa Colony at Bitkin, a town in the Central Tchadian Massif. The shawm 〈i〉libo〈/i〉 consists of a milletstem with a reed cut out at one end. Before putting the instruments to his lips the player wraps the cord tightly around his fingers. He holds the instrument diagonnally in front of his mouth and takes the reed between his lips. Alterations in pitch are obtained by blowing or inhaling air, by modifying the length of the reed with the tuning-loop, and by opening and closing the lower opening with the thumb. The Haussa use this instrument to call the names of their friends and girl friends by transposing the syllables of the spoken names into tones.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Ambasanda singt eine Gruppe von Frauen und Mädchen, im Halbkreis stehend und klatschend, ein Preislied auf reiche und berühmte Männer ihres Landes. Zwei junge Männer kommen hinzu und führen mit zwei Mädchen einen Paartanz vor. Die Tänzerinnen und Tänzer lösen sich ab.
    Abstract: The "al beher"-dance is an entertainment dance of the Hemat-Arabs. In the film the dance is performed by the inhabitants of Ambasanda village at the foot of the Gera Massif in eastern Tchad. The women and girls of the village are arranged in a semicircle on the dancing-place. The dancers' position in the semicircle corresponds to their social prestige, the women having the highest prestige occupying the places in the middle of the semicircle. The women clap their hands and sing a song in praise of several rich and famous men of the country. Two girls step out of the women's line and wait for two boys approaching them and the forming pairs with them. Boy and girl hold each other by their arms and perform the figure of the "al beher"- dance, a combination of long and high leaps with "leap-turn". The couples go on dancing until two other women step out of their line in order to relive them. Getting tired, the boys retire, two other boys take their places and continue dancing with the waiting girls. The film presents an excerpt from the "al beher"-dance which comprehends all phases and all figures of the dance.

    Abstract: The dambio dance is performed at the annual feast of the margai for this clan in Chad. Mostly women participate in the dance, but it is evident that they have drunk millet beer before the performance. Eventually the dancers lose the rhythm, some quarreling takes place, and the dance dissolves in part.

    Abstract: Two songs are presented by Godi Kossat, a popular singer of the Diongor people of Chad. The first selection praises some of the mighty and rich men at Mukulu, while the second song celebrates the famous Rabeh who conquered parts of Eastern Sudan at the end of the nineteenth century. Godi Kossat is accompanied by two musicians playing the five-stringed harp or kundinge.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Djaya tanzen junge Männer in Kreisformation, ihre Turbantücher schwenkend, um eine Gruppe von Preislieder singenden Mädchen und zwei Trommlern. Zwischen den einzelnen Tänzen singt der Chor zur Begleitung der Trommeln.
    Abstract: In the centre of the dancing-place stand two drummers and the girls' chorus. The drums are cylindrical drums with double membrane attached by bracing cords. The girls clap their hands and sing songs in praise of prominent persons. The dancers, about twenty boys, move anti-clockwise around the girls' chorus and the drummers. They wear long turban scarves which they wave in the air when swinging their arms. There is a close connection between the girls'singing and the boys movements: the steps of the boys are directed by the songs. The first dance is followed by a passage showing only the chorus singing and the beating of the drums. Another "djele"-dance follows, accompanied too by singing, rhythmical hand-clapping and the beating of the drums. The dancers circle once more around the group of the girls and wave their turban scraves, but thei steps are modified. Shortly after the dance stops, the girls intone another song and the third "djele"-dance begins. The complicated complications of steps are performed by the dancers on the spot; they are evidently differing from those of the preceding dances. All "djele"-dances are presented at full length.

    Abstract: In many Sudanic towns there are professional musicians organized into orchestras. They play at family festivals, in brothels, and on official occasions, for example on legal holidays, at the visit of a government official, etc. Small towns, Mongo, offer earning oportunity for one orchestra only, bigger towns however often have several orchestras. In order to facilitate the analysis of the orchestra, the instruments in the first part of the film are demonstrated individually. The principal instrument is an oboe called 〈i〉gaita〈/i〉 the player blows up his cheeks and takes a provision of air which allows him to play the long melody without intermission. The other instruments of the orchestra are four diffenrent drums, beaten with wooden drumsticks or with the hand. After the demonstration of the different instruments, the film shows the orchestra playing in ensemble. The musicians proceed with slow rhythmic steps one behind the other. The 〈i〉gaita-player〈/i〉 occasionally turns towards the drummers, gives them the melody to accompany and removes unsteadiness in the synchronous playing together. The orchestra plays two different pieces of music which both belong to the category of the different clothes worn by the male Muslims in Tchadian towns.

    Abstract: The film shows the mutu-dance, one of the traditional Kenga mourning-dances, at fulll length. The mutu-dance takes place in front of the homestead of the deceased, it is one of the great mourning-dances taking place in the afternoon before the burial. All the inhabitants of the village as well as guests from the surrounding villages take part in it. Everybody is in festive attire, the men are armed. As a sign of mourning serveral women wear a thick cotton belt, others have shaved their heads, and the near female relatives have put ashes on their heads. The dance is accompained by the orchestra which consists of flutes, rattles and drums. Often a dancer executes only some sequences of steps, then he goes away and return later on. During the dance some of the men occasionally take one of the women for a partner and dance together with her.

    Abstract: The film shows excerpts from a Kenga-Barana burial. Early in the morning several woman of the village have assembeld at the entrance-gate to the homestead of the deceased. They sing the traditional mourning-songs, some woman dance. Near relatives of the deceased have shaved their heads and put ashes on them as a sign of mouring. Many of the female mourners wear mourning belts of cotton strips. The men are sitting in a shelter and mourn silently, two of them sewing the shroud. In a reaped field outside the village the gave is dug. In the afternoon the great mourning-dances take place. They are accompained by the orchestra which consists of flutes, rattles and drums. All the people are in festive attire, the men are armed. With little interruptions they dance all the afternoon up to the burial. The film shows two dances completely. The dances stop when the funeral procession breaks up. Bearers carry the corpse prepared for the burial out of the homestead, in this moment women and children wail, the men brandish their weapons. Most of the people join the funeral procession.

    Abstract: Festlich bekleidet besteigt der Sultan sein geschmücktes Pferd und unternimmt einen symbolischen Ritt durch das Land. Er nimmt dabei die Huldigungen der Frauen und Mädchen entgegen (Kniefall, Preisgesang, Tanz). Begleitet wird er von seinem Hoforchester, zwei Bulala-Spielleuten und einigen Dienern.
    Abstract: The sultan, dressed in festive attire, mounts his decorated horse and makes a symbolic ride across the country, where women and girls assembled to pay homage to him (prostration, song, dance). He is accompanied by his court orchestra, two Bulala musicians, and several servants.

    Abstract: Nach Trauertänzen vor dem Gehöft der Verstorbenen wird die Leiche zum ausgehobenen Grab gebracht und bestattet. Das Grab wird verschlossen, und ein Tonkrug ohne Boden wird daraufgesetzt. Von der Leiche führt ein Seil nach oben durch den Krug, womit durch ein entsprechendes Zeichen der Geister die Todesursache geklärt werden soll.
    Abstract: Shows the mourning dance in front of the deceased's house. The body is carried to the grave followed by crying women who do not go along to the burial place. A clay pitcher is set upon the grave with the deceased's pipe placed in its handle.

    Abstract: Vor den zu verrichtenden Opfern wird das Orakel befragt. Nach Ankündigung der Opfer durch eine Trompete werden am Margai-Altar Hühner und Hirsebier geopfert. Das restliche Bier wird von den Anwesenden getrunken. Eine andere Opferhandlung zeigt einen Margai-Priester, der ein Bieropfer darbringt. Die Margai (Naturgeister) werden durch weibliche Medien befragt, die sich in tranceartigem Zustand befinden.
    Abstract: Shows scenes of a sacrifice at a Margai altar. An old man blasts a sacred trumpet in order to announce the ceremony, while women brew the millet beer necessary for the proceedings. A father and two grown sons pray at the altar, then sacrifice chickens. The containers on the altar are filled with the millet beer; the rest of the beverage is drunk by the men in attendance, and the priest performs a beer offering.
