Abstract:
Among the Kaba wrestling matches associated with a dance are a kind of "rite de passage", the passage from the age class of boys to that of adult men. In the beginning the film shows one of the wrestlers colouring his body with red earth-colour and putting on the goatskin, the traditional wrestler's clothing. The wrestling matches are preceded by a dance performed on the central place, presented in the film in excerpts. On the border of the place stands the orchestra which consists of two drums and one xylophone. After the dance the wrestling matches take place, the boys wrestling by pairs. During the match the girls dance around the wrestlers and utter quavers to encourage them. The three excerpts from wrestling matches presented in the film show that the wrestlers follow certain definite rules.
