    Abstract: Zusammenfassung: In times of entrenched social upheaval and multiple crises, we need the kind of social theory that is prepared to look at the big picture, analyze the broad developmental features of modern societies, their structural conditions and dynamics, and point to possible ways out of the crises we face. Over the last couple of decades, two German sociologists, Andreas Reckwitz and Hartmut Rosa, have sought to provide wide-ranging social theories of this kind. While their theories are very different, they share in common the view that the analysis of modernity as a social formation must be kept at the heart of sociology, and that the theory of society should ultimately serve to diagnose the crises of the present.In this book, Andreas Reckwitz and Hartmut Rosa join forces to examine the value and the limits of a theory of society today. They provide clear and concise accounts of their own theories of society, explicate their key concepts - including "singularization" in the case of Reckwitz, "acceleration" and "resonance" in the case of Rosa - and draw out the implications of their theories for understanding the multiple crises we face today. The result is a book that provides both an excellent introduction to the work of two of the most important sociologists writing today and a vivid demonstration of the value of the kind of bold social theory of modern societies that they espouse

In jüngster Zeit haben Andreas Reckwitz und Hartmut Rosa großangelegte, jedoch ganz unterschiedlich akzentuierte Gesellschaftstheorien vorgelegt, welche die gegenwärtigen Debatten über die Spätmoderne maßgeblich bestimmen. In diesem gemeinsamen Buch treten sie nun in einen kritischen Dialog. Ausgehend von dem geteilten Anliegen, dass die Analyse der Moderne als Sozialformation ins Zentrum einer Soziologie gehört, die ihre Aufgabe der Aufklärung der Gesellschaft über sich selbst ernst nimmt, entfalten sie in umfangreichen Essays zunächst ihre je eigene gesellschaftstheoretische Perspektive: Während Reckwitz "soziale Praktiken", "Kontingenz" und "Singularisierung" als Leitbegriffe wählt, entscheidet sich Rosa für "Beschleunigung", "Steigerung" und "Resonanz". Im zweiten Teil des Buches spitzen sie ihre Positionen nochmals zu, arbeiten Gemeinsamkeiten heraus, markieren aber auch grundlegende Differenzen - und zwar im direkten, von Martin Bauer moderierten Gespräch. „Die Soziologen Andreas Reckwitz und Hartmut Rosa haben beide in großen Werken die krisenhafte Gegenwart untersucht – ihre Vorstellungen darüber unterscheiden sich grundsätzlich. Das Ergebnis dieses Prozesses lässt sich nicht vorhersagen oder planen, daher eignet dem Ereignis der Resonanz immer auch ein Moment der Unverfügbarkeit.

    Abstract: Europe and Latin America's social and economic stagnation is a direct result of the unresolved phenomena of the financialization crisis that broke out in 2008 in developed countries. Editors Noemi Levy and Etelberto Ortiz analyze the limitations of economic growth and development under capitalist economic organizations where financial capital is dominant, as well as explore alternative economic policies. This book argues that institutional settings based on the international monetary market, the global production organization and the international commerce arrangements need to be redesigned to improve countries' economic growth, job opportunities and salaries. In order for economic disequilibria to be reduced among regions, countries and social classes, economic surplus appropriation must be regulated. Divided into four distinct thematic sections, the chapters discuss how income distribution must be re-evaluated in order to halt the economic crisis of developing countries in Europe and Latin America, and to boost a new cycle of economic growth and development.     Abstract: While recent studies have highlighted the phenomenon and risks of increased inequalities between the top and the bottom of society, little research has so far been carried out on trends relating to the median income range that generally represents the middle class. This volume examines the following questions: what are the main transformations in the world of work over the last 20 years in terms of the labour market, social dialogue and conditions of work, wages and incomes that may have affected the middle class? How has the middle class been altered by the financial and economic crisis? What are the long-term trends for the middle class in Europe? This volume also investigates the potential risks and effects of the reshuffling, or even weakening, of the middle class. On the social side, it explores the ramifications of further retrenchment of the European Social Model, which to a great extent has traditionally been funded by the middle class. On the economic side, the book investigates whether this process - especially from the perspective of consumption and human capital - is endangering the long-term sustainability of the current economic model. While presenting evidence of a definite erosion of the middle class, this book assesses the specific situation in each individual EU member state on the basis of detailed statistics and case studies of professional categories that traditionally represent the middle class. Um dies zu begründen, präsentiert Rosa zunächst das ganze Spektrum der Formen, in denen wir eine Beziehung zur Welt herstellen, vom Atmen bis hin zu kulturell ausdifferenzierten Weltbildern. Dann wendet er sich den konkreten Erfahrungs- und Handlungssphären zu – etwa Familie und Politik, Arbeit und Sport, Religion und Kunst –, in denen wir spätmodernen Subjekte Resonanz zwar suchen, aber immer seltener finden. Das hat maßgeblich mit der Steigerungslogik der Moderne zu tun, die sowohl Ursache als auch Folge einer gestörten Weltbeziehung ist, und zwar auf individueller wie kollektiver Ebene. Denn auch die großen Krisentendenzen der Gegenwartsgesellschaft – Ökokrise, Demokratiekrise, Psychokrise – lassen sich resonanztheoretisch analysieren, wie Rosa in seiner Soziologie der Weltbeziehung zeigt. Als eine umfassende Rekonstruktion der Moderne in Begriffen ihrer historisch realisierten Resonanzverhältnisse wagt sie den Versuch, den Rahmen für eine erneuerte Kritische Theorie abzustecken. „Warum haben wir immer zu wenig Zeit? Der Beschleunigungskritiker Hartmut Rosa wurde bekannt, weil er wissenschaftlich beschreibt, was viele fühlen. Jetzt hat der Soziologe ein Gegenprogramm zum gehetzten Leben entwickelt“ (Spiegel).     Description / Table of Contents: A number of expenditure items related to education and training have also been cut. These reforms have given rise to waves of protest throughout Europe. The goal of this volume is to study this public sector shock. While budgetary reforms seek to ensure a more balanced and sound economic policy, they may generate new work inequalities among public sector employees, most particularly among women, who account for a considerable proportion of public sector employment. Cuts in education and training may also have an impact on the quality of human capital in both the public and private sectors, despite the fact that the recent crisis has shown the value of education as employees with better skills and training are more likely to maintain their jobs and incomes.

On the economic side, what will be the impact on wages, and on job quantity and quality? On the social side, what will the effects be on inequality and social cohesion? On the basis of a comparative and comprehensive assessment, illustrated by case studies in education, health and public administration, policy issues are discussed with the aim of finding the right mix of public sector reforms

    Abstract: This book presents an economic analysis of the main effects of liberalizing the electricity and natural gas markets across Western Europe. It is based on a state-of-the art detailed numerical simulation model that takes account of the interlinkages between different energy markets. Short-run and long-run effects are identified and the robustness of results is tested. Separate chapters discuss climate policy, renewable energy and the role of Russia. A key finding is that liberalization lowers energy prices and increases consumption, particularly in the electricity markets where prices fall by 25 per cent on average in the short run. Effects are somewhat stronger in the long run, as investment options are utilized. The welfare benefits of liberalization are considerable in the long run. However, liberalization increases emissions of CO2. The welfare costs of fulfilling Western Europe's Kyoto obligations depend highly on the policies implemented, but are at least as large as the benefits of liberalization

    Abstract: In February 2003, the London Congestion Charging Scheme was introduced and in 2006 a similar policy was introduced in Stockholm. In both cases automobile traffic entering the cordon declined by about 20 percent. This book evaluates these and other similar programs exploring their implications for the United States. This study's value lies in the fact that it examines road pricing in the real world and not simply from a theoretical viewpoint.     Abstract: This book presents various empirical analyses of cross border strategies adopted by global firms with a particular emphasis on the European and East Asian experiences. It also provides studies of the trends and prospects of regional economic integration, focusing mainly on East Asia. The book addresses the topic of economic integration from both a corporate perspective and a policy perspective. The contributors illustrate the powerful integrative effects of cross border strategies of global firms and their impact on the increasing economic interdependence between countries, as shown for example by production sharing within multinational corporate networks. For their part, governments and policy makers are endeavouring to influence the path of globalisation by means of international cooperation, among which the shaping of regional economic areas is an outstanding one. While Europe still stands unrivalled in terms of its regional integration achievements, East Asian countries are also trying to forge their own path by building preferential trade and investment links on a regional basis. Such attempts are still in their infancy, but they raise some healthy debates to which this edited book makes a valuable contribution.     Abstract: The contributors to this comprehensive book compile and analyse the latest data available on household wealth using, as case studies, the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Finland during the 1990s and into the twenty-first century. The authors show that in the US, trends are highlighted in terms of wealth holdings, among the low-income population, along with changes in wealth polarization, racial differences in wealth holdings, and the dynamics of portfolio choices. The consensus between the authors is that wealth inequality has generally risen among these OECD countries since the early 1980s, although Germany stands out as an exception. In the case of the US, it is also noted that wealth holdings have generally failed to improve among low-income families and that the racial wealth gap widened during the late 1980s

    Abstract: Organisations and the nature of work have undergone fundamental changes in recent decades. At the same time, the traditional family pattern in Europe is being challenged by the growing number of dual-income families, and by the rise of women's employment. The central aim of this book is to consider to what extent changes in organisations and in the nature of jobs are compatible with the need, increasingly expressed by employees, for greater integration between work and family life. The book questions what sort of dilemmas modern and future employees face, in terms of shaping their careers and organising their lives at home.     Abstract: This book explores the regional strategy and management of Japanese MNEs in Europe. Ken-ichi Ando investigates, using case studies of the auto and pharmaceutical industries, how these companies can, and do, overcome the inherent difficulties and opportunities of trading in Europe, including the problems posed by cultural differences and geography, alongside the opportunities of expanding markets. While these companies are global players, they must increasingly be aware of, and evolve in response to, European economic integration. The strategy setting and management are influenced by company- and industry-specific factors, and some common features can be found. The locational and entry strategies are based both on the multinationals' own resources and capability, and on the changing locational conditions, while pan-European management is conducted to achieve the benefits of 'multinationality' at the regional level. The mutual relationships between the location of subsidiaries, the entry mode, and the pan-European operation are clearly shown from the detailed analysis at the company level. The impacts and limits of the EU on multinationals are also confirmed in the book, and the importance of national characteristics is suggested. Scholars and graduate students studying international business and economics, as well as European integration will find this book of great interest

    Abstract: With regulation seeking to foster competition at the same time as also having to protect essential services, the authors investigate regulatory styles, costs of new regulatory functions and how firms in the new regulatory landscape access and influence regulatory authorities. The authors consider how EU pressures may hinder or help the functioning of new regulatory markets and the establishment of business-regulator relationships, as well as the broader policy implications for these new regulatory environments. The book also determines how regulatory authorities emerge and evolve under different state traditions and assesses, over time, the degree to which there is potential for convergence, divergence and continued differences as regulatory functions mature

    Abstract: Recent corporate governance scandals have brought to the fore the inherent contradictions of a capitalism dominated by financial markets. This challenging book by Michel Aglietta and Antoine Rebérioux argues that capitalism's basic premise--that companies must be managed in the sole interest of their shareholders--is incongruent with the current environment of liquid markets, profit-hungry investors and chronic financial instability. The authors advocate rather that a company should be managed as an institution where common objectives are developed for all stakeholders, and that this democratic principle should be extended to the management of collective savings to reduce macro-financial instability. These two conditions, they contend, could make contemporary capitalism a vehicle for social progress
