    Abstract: Die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie Bruno Latours kennt kein Konzept des Fremden. Dies mag irritierend erscheinen, bedenkt man, dass die Figur des Fremden eines der zentralen Schlüsselkonzepte der Soziologie darstellt. Von Simmel bis Schütz stehen Fremdheit und der Fremde stets im Spannungsverhältnis zum Eigenen, welches gerade in der Begegnung des Fremden besonders sichtbar wird. Mit Werkzeugen der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie entwirft Edda Mack eine soziologische Denkweise, die das Theoretisieren selbst in den Mittelpunkt soziologischer Forschung stellt. Am Beispiel der Fluchtmigrationsforschung zeigt sie auf, dass eine solche Denkweise in ihrer Umsetzung nah bei den Dingen von Belang bleiben kann.

    Abstract: This collective volume explores the connections between time and difference in a transcultural perspective. The dehistoricization and naturalization of diversity in contemporary discourse conceal the roles of subjectivity, memory, and time in the social construction of difference. The experience and perception of time is at once psychological, linguistic, political, philosophical, and cultural. It is also technologically mediated. Whether linear, circular, interrupted, cyclical, synchronic, diachronic, or (non-)simultaneous, time stands in problematic relation to space, and not just metaphorically. Overlapping memories, hidden histories, processes of in- and exclusion, future aspirations and projections, arise from and give rise to diversity. Both memories and metanarratives are cultural practices that organize experience and transform it into general knowledge. Following Lyotard and poststructuralist theorists we can question these hegemonies to unveil “petits récits” (1979) and to reflect on the diversity of human experience, such as indigenous, immigrant, and other marginalized perspectives in Canada and Québec as well as in Europe.

    Abstract: "Europeanisation of the Contemporary Far Right explores the role of transnational European identity in far-right mobilisation strategies. Focusing on the national members of two trans-European far-right coalitions - Generation Identity and Fortress Europe - the author explores the extent to which European far-right extra-parliamentary actors Europeanise their mobilisation. Drawing on social movement literature, the book argues that national extra-parliamentary actors' Europeanisation processes are influenced by their political and discursive opportunities and resources. Focusing on the groups' mobilisation during the 'refugee crisis' (2015-2017), the analysis considers the groups' frames, collective action, and coalition-building in the period, finding that the depth of the groups' resources particularly affects their capacity to mobilise. This book will be of interest to scholars, students, and civil society actors in fields related to the far right, European studies, social movements, and migration"--

Jessica Wilde zeigt auf, wie sich eine solche Soziologie von der menschlichen Gesellschaft als Fluchtpunkt sozialtheoretischen Denkens verabschiedet und sich programmatisch als Technik-, Stadtbau-, Architektur-, Planungs- und Designsoziologie neu aufstellt.     Abstract: "In this ethnographic study, the author takes an agnostic stance towards the truth value of conspiracy theories and delves into the everyday lives of people active in the conspiracy milieu to understand better what the contemporary appeal of conspiracy theories is. Conspiracy theories have become popular cultural products, endorsed and shared by significant segments of western societies. Yet our understanding of who these people are and why they are attracted by these alternative explanations of reality is hampered by their implicit and explicit pathologization. Drawing on a wide variety of empirical sources, this book shows in rich detail what conspiracy theories are about, which people are involved, how they see themselves, and what they practically do with these ideas in their everyday lives. The author inductively develops from these concrete descriptions more general theorizations of how to understand this burgeoning subculture. He concludes by situating conspiracy culture in an age of epistemic instability where societal conflicts over knowledge abound, and the Truth is no longer assured, but "out there" for us to grapple with. This book will be an important source for students and scholars from a range of disciplines interested in the depth and complexity of conspiracy culture, including Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Communication Studies, Ethnology, Folklore Studies, History, Media Studies, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.     Abstract: Die Geschichte der europäischen Expansion und Kolonialisierung kann ohne den Rückgriff auf Lastenträger nicht vorgestellt werden: Sie waren es, die das räumliche Vordringen europäischer Entdecker überhaupt ermöglichten. Alle Kontinente waren vom Trägerwesen betroffen, doch über das Schicksal der Träger_innen selbst ist bisher wenig bekannt. Die internationale Beiträgerschaft des Bandes verschränkt kultur-, medien- und sozialgeschichtliche Fragestellungen und dokumentiert erstmals die zentrale Rolle, die den Träger_innen in ökonomischer, politischer und gesellschaftlicher Hinsicht zukam.

Mit Blick auf Polen, Tschechien, Russland, Bulgarien, Ungarn, Kroatien, die Slowakei sowie die Ukraine ethnografieren die Beiträge des Bandes diese Wiederentdeckung des Nationalen aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Sie beleuchten die Ursachen und Spezifika dieser aktuellen Entwicklungen in den postsozialistischen Ländern und gehen den Folgen für den europäischen Einigungsprozess nach.
    Abstract: In the last decades, historical myths have been revived in Eastern Europe: "Folk culture" or religious traditions contribute just as much to politics of national identity as do memorials of modern history, such as within the context of athletics or pop culture. Focusing on Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia as well as Ukraine, the contributions found in this volume ethnographically explore this re-discovery of nationalism from the perspective of cultural studies. They illuminate the causes and specifics of these current developments in post-socialist countries and examine the consequences they have on the European process of unification.

    Abstract: "This book argues that the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe essentially began shortly before 1600 BC, when lands rich in natural resources were taken over by military forces from the Eurasian steppe and from southern Caucasia. First were the copper and silver mines (along with good harbors) in Greece, and the copper and gold mines of the Carpathian basin. By ca. 1500 BC other military men had taken over the amber shores of Scandinavia and the metalworking district of the southern Alps. These military takeovers offer the most likely explanations for the origins of the Greek, Keltic, Germanic and Italic subgroups of the Indo-European language family. Battlefield warfare and militarism, Robert Drews contends, were novelties ca. 1600 BC and were a consequence of the military employment of chariots. Current opinion is that militarism and battlefield warfare are as old as formal states, going back before 3000 BC. Another current opinion is that the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe happened long before 1600 BC. The 'Kurgan Theory' of Marija Gimbutas and David Anthony dates it from late in the fifth to early in the third millennium BC and explains it as the result of horse-riding conquerors or raiders coming to Europe from the steppe. Colin Renfrew's Archaeology and Language dates the Indo-Europeanizing of Europe to the seventh and sixth millennia BC, and explains it as a consequence of the spread of agriculture in a 'wave of advance' from Anatolia through Europe. Pairing linguistic with archaeological evidence Drews concludes that in Greece and Italy, at least, no Indo-European language could have arrived before the second millennium BC"...Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Minderheiten sind seit dem Beitritt des Deutschen Reiches zum Völkerbund (1926) ein zentraler Bestandteil der deutschen Außenpolitik. Ihnen kommt im Prozess der Europäisierung und der Auflösung nationaler Grenzen eine wichtige Rolle zu. Wie Minderheiten sich in Europa Gehör verschaffen können, ist in hohem Maße durch die Kulturpolitik der Nationalstaaten und der EU bestimmt. Die Autoren und Autorinnen des Bandes richten ihren Blick auf die Anfänge einer modernen Minderheitenpolitik seit der Weimarer Republik, in welcher der Begriff der nationalen Minderheiten zuerst zu einem Gegenstand rechtlicher wie politischer Debatten und zu einer gesellschaftlichen "Kategorie der Moderne" wurde. Die Gründung des Völkerbundes, die Legitimierung des Selbstbestimmungsrechts der Völker und die Etablierung des Minderheitenschutzes auf internationaler Ebene bildeten den Ausgangspunkt für diese Entwicklungen. Zeitgenössische volkskundliche Untersuchungen trugen neben vielen anderen Wissenschaften maßgeblich zur Kodifizierung des Konzeptes Minderheiten sowie zur Fremd- und Selbstethnisierung bei.

    Abstract: Unter »Okzidentalismus« wird hier ein Diskurs abendländischer Hegemonieproduktion verstanden, der ein »orientalisiertes« Anderes in der muslimischen Diaspora und im politischen Islamismus verkörpert sieht. »Okzidentalismuskritik« begreift Neo-Orientalismen und antimuslimische Rassismen nicht als Folge von Migration und internationalen Konflikten, sondern als Kristallisation neuer nationaler und europäischer Identitätsbildungen, in der Gender und Sexualpolitik eine strategische Rolle spielen. Das transdisziplinäre Projekt führt Beiträge aus der Postcolonial, Queer und Critical Whiteness Theory auf historischen sowie sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Feldern zusammen.

Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group identities, collective ways of life and recognition. This volume extends such analysis of culture by approaching it as semiotic practice which conjoins the making of subjects with the configuration of the social. Examining fields such as memory, literature, film, and Islamic art, the studies in this volume explore culture as another element in the assemblage of rationalities governing European Islam. From this perspective, the transformations of European identities can be understood as a matter of cultural practice and politics, which extend the analytical frames of political philosophy, historical legacies, normative orders and social dynamics.

    Abstract: World War I marks a well-known turning point in anthropology, and this volume is the first to examine the variety of forms it took in Europe. Distinct national traditions emerged and institutes were founded, partly due to collaborations with the military. Researchers in the cultural sciences used war zones to gain access to »informants«: prisoner-of-war and refugee camps, occupied territories, even the front lines. Anthropologists tailored their inquiries to aid the war effort, contributed to interpretations of the war as a »struggle« between »races«, and assessed the »warlike« nature of the Balkan region, whose crises were key to the outbreak of the Great War.

Auf der Suche nach Erklärungen für dieses Phänomen vergleicht Heiner Mühlmann die arabische mit der europäischen Kultur und kommt zu eindeutigen Ergebnissen: Es ist die Übermacht der Männern im Alter von 15 bis 29 Jahren, deren Aggressionspotential durch die generationenübergreifende arabische Sexualmoral angefacht wird. Dieses Aggressionspotential scheint messbar, seine Folgen determiniert zu sein. Der Vergleich führt aber auch zu interessanten Erkenntnissen über die europäische Kultur. Gerade weil die Europäer sich selbst für aggressionslos halten, ist ihre Aggressivität heimtückischer. Besonders auffällig ist, dass die arabisch-islamische Aggressivität eher die Erscheinungsform der individuellen Tugend hat, dass dagegen die europäische Aggressivität institutionell funktioniert. Sie steckt nicht in den Europäern selbst, sondern in der Struktur ihrer Staatseinrichtungen.

    Abstract: This book examines the ways in which European democracies, including former communist states, are dealing with the new demands placed on their security policies since the cold war by transforming their military structures, and the effects this is having on the conceptualisation of soldiering. In the new security environment, democratic states have called upon their armed forces increasingly to fulfil unconventional tasks – partly civilian, partly humanitarian, and partly military – in most complex, multi-national missions. Not only have military structures been transformed to make them fit for these new types of deployments, but the new mission types highlight the necessity for democracies to come to terms with a new image and ethos of soldiering in defence of a transnational value community. Combining a qualitative comparison of twelve countries with an interdisciplinary methodology, this edited volume argues that the ongoing transformations of international politics make it necessary for democracies to address both internal and external factors as they shape their own civil-military relations. The issues discussed in this work are informed by Democratic Peace theory, which makes it possible to investigate relations within the state at the same time as analysing the international dimension. This approach gives the book a systematic theoretical framework which distinguishes it from the majority of existing literature on this subject. This book will be of much interest to students of civil-military relations, European politics, democratisation and post-communist transitions, and IR in general.

Roma-Festivals sind populär, während gleichzeitig die Angst vor einer »Roma-Invasion« grassiert. Monica Rüthers geht der Entstehungsgeschichte und den Funktionen dieser neuen Folklore im gegenwärtigen Europa nach. Sie vergleicht das jüdische Kulturfestival in Krakau mit der Zigeunerwallfahrt in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer und passt beide Räume in die kulturellen Topografien Europas ein. Die Analyse dieser Anlässe erlaubt die Frage, ob solche Räume auch emanzipatorisches Potenzial entfalten können. Im ersten Teil wird neben einer Einführung in die geschichtlich-theoretischen Grundlagen des "islamischen Rechts" eine kompakte Darstellung der bedeutendsten Straftatbestände ("hadd"-, "qisas"- und "diya"- sowie "tazir"-Delikte) samt prozessualen Fragen geboten, wobei den verschiedensten Meinungen der muslimischen Rechtsschulen Rechnung getragen wird. Im Rahmen dessen werden Vergleiche hinsichtlich der unterschiedlichen "Wertigkeit" von Rechtsgütern im "islamischen" und "europäischen" Strafrecht gezogen. Im zweiten Teil wird untersucht, ob und in welcher Weise zwei unterschiedlich muslimisch geprägte Staaten (Ägypten und Iran) im Strafrecht und in ausgewählten Zivilrechtsbereichen "klassisches islamisches Recht" zur Anwendung bringen und worin hierbei Unterschiede bestehen. Ziel des Buches ist es, ein Verständnis für gänzlich anders gestaltete Regelungs- und Rechtssysteme zu erhalten und die Diversität und Unterschiedlichkeit innerhalb des muslimischen Rechts erkennbar und begreifbar zu machen.
    Abstract: Dr. Christoph Zehetgruber, Jahrgang 1982, studierte von 2001 bis 2006 Rechtswissenschaften an der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, wo er von 2006 bis 2010 als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Strafrecht, Strafprozessrecht und Kriminologie beschäftigt war. 2010 promovierte er ebendort mit einer Arbeit zum islamischen Strafrecht. Von 2010 bis 2011 absolvierte er seine Gerichtspraxis in Wien, ab März 2011 war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Obersten Gerichtshof in Wien tätig. Seit Februar 2012 ist er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Strafrecht II der Universität Bayreuth.

Established in 1956 as a televised spectacle to unify postwar Western Europe through music, the Contest features singers who represent a participating nation with a new popular song. Viewers vote by phone for their favourite performance, though they cannot vote for their own country's entry. This process alone reveals much about national identities and identifications, as voting patterns expose deep-seated alliances and animosities among participating countries. Here, an international group of scholars from a variety of disciplines, including musicology, communications, history, sociology, English and German studies, explore how the contest sheds light on issues of European politics, national and European identity, race, gender and sexuality, and the aesthetics of camp. For some countries, participation in Eurovision has been simultaneously an assertion of modernity and a claim to membership in Europe and the West. Eurovision is sometimes regarded as a low-brow camp spectacle of little aesthetic or intellectual value. The essays in this collection often contradict this assumption, demonstrating that the contest has actually been a significant force and forecaster for social, cultural and political transformations in postwar Europe.
