    Abstract: Immer mehr Menschen in der Schweiz praktizieren Yoga, glauben an eine Wiedergeburt und lassen sich komplementärmedizinisch behandeln. Barbara Zeugin untersucht, wie sich dieser religiöse Wandel auf die Begleitung am Lebensende auswirkt Insofern alternative Formen von Religion in der Schweiz zunehmen, ist es nicht erstaunlich, wenn in der Begleitung am Lebensende auch alternativ-religiöse Praktiken und alternative Heilverfahren sowie die entsprechenden Rationalisierungen immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Rekonstruktion einer solchen, als alternativ aufgefassten Sterbebegleitungspraxis führte die Religionswissenschaftlerin erstens in ein Hospiz für schwer Kranke und Sterbende und zweitens in ein anthroposophisch-medizinisches Spital, wo sie beobachtend und fragend den folgenden Fragen nachging: Welche alternativ-religiösen Handlungsformen und Rationalisierungen spielen in der Begleitung am Lebensende eine Rolle? Welche Bedeutung wird alternativen Heilpraktiken zugeschrieben? Wie sieht die konkrete Begleitungspraxis aus? Und worin besteht letztlich die Alternativität dieser Praxis resp. wie verhält sich diese zum Selbstanspruch der Palliative Care, die schwer Kranken und Sterbenden auch spirituell zu begleiten?

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Abstract: Games are a unique art form. Game designers don't just create a world; they create who you will be in that world. They tell you what abilities to use and what goals to take on. In other words, games work in the medium of agency. This book explores what games have to teach us about our own rationality and agency. We have the capacity for a peculiar sort of motivational inversion. For some of us, winning is not the point. We take on an interest in winning temporarily, so that we can play the game. Thus, we are capable of taking on temporary and disposable ends. At the center of this book is a view about games as communicative artifacts. Games are a way of recording forms of agency; they are a library of agencies. And exploring that library can help us develop our own agency and autonomy.

    Abstract: Über die Auswirkungen digitaler Kommunikation wird viel spekuliert: Dem Versprechen, dass Neue Medien uns dabei helfen, Beziehungen aufzubauen und zu pflegen, unser Leben einfacher und gehaltvoller zu gestalten und unsere Arbeit zielstrebig und effizient zu erledigen, misstrauen viele Menschen zu Recht. Ähnliche Skepsis verdienen die Befürchtungen, der digitale Medienwandel würde uns zu atemlosen, oberflächlichen Maschinenmenschen machen.Wir können die Veränderung, die wir momentan erleben, nur verstehen, wenn wir sie präzise beschreiben und beim Untersuchen ihrer Auswirkungen nicht von Ängsten, Vorurteilen und Extrembeispielen ausgehen, sondern uns von wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen leiten lassen.Wampfler zeigt, wie sich Menschen durch ihre Techniknutzung verändern, wie sich die Bedeutung ihrer Beziehungen durch eine digitale Ebene wandelt und wie Lernen mit Neuen Medien möglich ist. Dabei wird darauf verzichtet, das Virtuelle als eine der Realität gegenüberstehende Sphäre abzugrenzen, weil digitale Kommunikation in ihrer Virtualität gleichzeitig Teil der Realität ist und sich das Leben im Cyberspace und das Leben im direkt wahrnehmbaren Raum gegenseitig beeinflussen.Ein kritischer Blick auf die Generation der »Digital Natives« zeigt auf, dass in ihrer Beschreibung nicht getrennt wird zwischen dem Verhalten, das Jugendliche unabhängig von digitaler Technologie auszeichnet, und spezifisch medienbedingten Veränderungen. Ausgehend von einer sachlichen Beschreibung der Mediennutzung von Jugendlichen wird anschaulich, in welchem Rahmen die Kinder von heute sich entwickeln und morgen ein gehaltvolles, würdiges Leben führen können. So entsteht eine nüchterne Medienpädagogik jenseits von Polemik und übertriebenen Befürchtungen, auf deren Grundlage wirkungsvolle Prävention der gefährlichen Aspekte der Nutzung Neuer Medien denkbar wird. Konkretisiert werden diese Überlegungen mit ganz praktischen Tipps, wie Erwachsene Jugendliche in ihrer Mediennutzung begleiten können und sollen, um sicherzustellen, dass sie mit der Fülle von Material und ihrem Ablenkungspotential selbständig umgehen können.Abschließend entwickelt eine Verbindung von Erzählungen aus Science Fiction mit einer Analyse technischer Möglichkeiten eine Vorstellung davon, wie Menschen Maschinen in Zukunft selbstbestimmt nutzen können, um ihr Leben frei zu gestalten. Eine sachliche, wissenschaftlich fundierte Beschreibung der Veränderungen, die digitale Medien für die Jugendlichen von heute und von morgen bedeuten, ermöglicht zielführende (medien-)pädagogische Arbeit. Part I covers the key techniques and technologies used to study the neurobiology of language today.     Abstract: This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

    Abstract: We all know that speech can be harmful. But what are the harms and how exactly does the speech in question brings those harms about? Mary Kate McGowan identifies a previously overlooked mechanism by which speech constitutes, rather than merely causes, harm. She argues that speech constitutes harm when it enacts a norm that prescribes that harm. McGowan illustrates this theory by considering many categories of speech including sexist remarks, racist hate speech, pornography, verbal triggers for stereotype threat, micro-aggressions, political dog whistles, slam poetry, and even the hanging of posters. 'Just Words' explores a variety of harms - such as oppression, subordination, discrimination, domination, harassment, and marginalisation - and ways in which these harms can be remedied.

    Abstract: Given the vast inventory of verbal and visual images of nonhuman animals disseminated for millennia to debase and bestialize Jews (the Bestiarium Judaicum), this work asks: What is at play when Jewish-identified writers employ such figures in their narratives and poems? Bringing together Jewish cultural studies, examining how Jews have negotiated Jew-Gentile difference, and critical animal studies, analyzing the functions served by asserting human-animal difference, this monograph focuses on the writings of primarily Germanophone authors, including Sigmund Freud, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Gertrud Kolmar, H. Leivick, Felix Salten, and Curt Siodmak. It ferrets out of their nonhuman-animal constructions their responses to the bestial answers upon which the Jewish and animal questions converged and by which varieties of the species 'Jew' were depicted.

    Abstract: Religionslehrkräfte interagieren tagtäglich in ihrem Unterricht mit konfessionell, religiös und weltanschaulich heterogenen Gruppen. Diese Buntheit stellt sie angesichts von Subjekt- und Kompetenzorientierung mal vor kleinere, mal vor größere Herausforderungen. Selbstverständlich geht es hierbei immer um die Frage: Wie kann ich meinen Schüler*innen gerecht werden und für alle gewinnbringend mit der Vielfalt im Klassenzimmer umgehen?Kompetente und praktische Hilfe gibt dieses Buch – und trägt damit dem Umstand Rechnung, dass es für diese Herausforderungen bislang nur sehr wenige Gestaltungsentwürfe gibt.     Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Taboo Words and Language defines taboo as a proscription of behaviour for a specifiable community of one or more persons at a specifiable time in specifiable contexts. What is in fact tabooed is the use of those words and language in certain contexts; in short, the taboo applies to instances of language behaviour. For behaviour to be proscribed it must be perceived as in some way harmful to an individual or their community but the degree of harm can fall anywhere on a scale from a breach of etiquette to out-and-out fatality. All tabooed behaviours are deprecated and they lead to social if not legal sanction. Taboos are described and the reasons and beliefs behind them are investigated.

    Abstract: A collection of Pollmann's previously-published essays on early Christian poetry, most newly-translated from German and all updated and corrected. It is a genre that has tended to be overlooked by both Classicists and Patristics scholars and this collection will rectify that. With the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire, increasing numbers of educated people converted to this new belief. As Christianity did not have its own educational institutions, the issue of how to harmonize pagan education and Christian convictions became increasingly pressing. Especially classical poetry, the staple diet of pagan education, was considered morally corrupting (because of its deceitful mythological content) and damaging for the salvation of the soul (because of the false gods it advocated). But Christianity recoiled from an unqualified anti-intellectual attitude, while at the same time the experiment of creating an idiosyncratic form of genuinely Christian poetry failed (the sole exception being the poet Commodianus). This book argues that, instead, Christian poets made creative use of the classical literary tradition, and—in addition to blending it with Judaeo-Christian biblical exegesis—exploited poetry’s special ability of enhancing the effectiveness of communication through aesthetic means. It seeks to explore these strategies through a close analysis of a wide range of Christian, and for comparison partly also pagan, writers mainly from the fourth to sixth centuries. The book reveals that early Christianity was not a hermetically sealed uniform body, but displays a rich spectrum of possibilities in dealing with the past and a willingness to engage with and adapt the surrounding culture(s), thereby developing diverse and changing responses to historical challenges. By demonstrating throughout that authority is a key in understanding the long denigrated and misunderstood early Christian poets, this book reaches the ground-breaking conclusion that early Christian poetry is an art form that gains its justification by adding cultural authority to Christianity. Thus, in a wider sense this book engages with the recently emerged scholarly interest in aspects of religion as cultural phenomena.
