    Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

    Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

    Abstract: Im Rahmen des Unabhängigkeitskampfes der namibischen Befreiungsbewegung SWAPO gegen die Besetzung durch Südafrika entstand 1979 ein einzigartiges Solidaritätsprojekt: Bis 1990 wurden fast 430 namibische Kinder in die DDR gebracht, um sie vor dem Krieg zu schützen und ihnen eine gute Ausbildung zu ermöglichen.Karin Müller rekonstruiert mithilfe einer Metaphernanalyse in Interviews mit 17 ehemaligen »DDR-Kindern aus Namibia«, wie sie ihr Aufwachsen in der DDR erlebt haben.     Abstract: In 1955, the Soviet Union became the first country in the world to re-legalize abortion on the principle of women's rights to abortion. How could this happen in Stalinist society which prohibited feminist movements? Replacing the Dead finds an answer in previously secret archives that document the difficult decade after World War II, which killed 27 million Soviet citizens and the government's policy to increase fertility by promoting out-of-wedlock births. The result was an abortion battle between women, government, and Soviet legal and medical professionals that has continued for decades.

Zwar war er in erster Linie ein Soldat, der lebend aus dem Feld zurückgekehrt war - abseits dieses kleinsten gemeinsamen Nenners blieben seine Konturen jedoch unscharf. Entgegen verbreiteter Annahmen waren die Veteranen der 1920er Jahre weder eine amorphe Gruppe, die im Off der Weimarer Geschichte agierte, noch eine latent gewalt- und kampfbereite Horde brutalisierter Männer. Denn solche Interpretationen vernachlässigen eine zentrale Frage: Was macht ehemalige Kriegsteilnehmer überhaupt zu Veteranen? Diese historischen Konstruktionsprozesse und Entwicklungslinien zeichnet Benjamin Schulte anhand des Kyffhäuserbundes exemplarisch nach. - Biographical note: Benjamin Schulte, geb. 1986, ist Dozent beim Bundesministerium des Innern. Nach dem Studium der Geschichte und Sozialwissenschaften in Bielefeld und Köln war er zuvor als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Historischen Institut der Universität zu Köln tätig, an dem er auch promovierte.     Abstract: In 1972, the Bureau of Indian Affairs terminated its twenty-year-old Voluntary Relocation Program, which encouraged the mass migration of roughly 100,000 Native American people from rural to urban areas. At the time the program ended, many groups - from government leaders to Red Power activists - had already classified it as a failure, and scholars have subsequently positioned the program as evidence of America's enduring settler-colonial project. But Douglas K. Miller here argues that a richer story should be told - one that recognises Indigenous mobility in terms of its benefits and not merely its costs. In their collective refusal to accept marginality and destitution on reservations, Native Americans used the urban relocation program to take greater control of their socioeconomic circumstances.

Roman Weindl zeigt anhand einer eingehenden Betrachtung der Begriffe Aura, Originalität und Authentizität auf, inwiefern die These von der »Aura des Originals« problematisch ist.     Abstract: This title examines an understudied dimension women's history in the United States: how a group of affluent white women from the late-19th through the mid-20th centuries advanced the status of all women through acts of philanthropy. This cadre of activists included Phoebe Hearst, the mother of William Randolph Hearst; Grace Dodge, granddaughter of Wall Street 'Merchant Prince' William Earle Dodge; and Ava Belmont, who married into the Vanderbilt family fortune. Motivated by their own experiences with sexism, and focusing on women's need for economic independence, these benefactors sought to expand women's access to higher education, promote suffrage, and champion reproductive rights as well as to provide assistance to working-class women.

    Abstract: One method of American territory expansion in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands was the denial of property rights to Mexican landowners, which led to dispossession. Many historical accounts overlook this colonial impact on Indigenous and Mexican peoples, and existing studies that do tackle this subject tend to privilege the male experience. Here, Karen R. Roybal recentres the focus of dispossession on women, arguing that gender, sometimes more than race, dictated legal concepts of property ownership and individual autonomy. Drawing on a diverse source base - legal land records, personal letters, and literature - Roybal locates voices of Mexican American women in the Southwest to show how they fought against the erasure of their rights, both as women and as landowners.

Was aber sind deren kulturelle Interessen, wodurch zeichnet sich ihr Kulturnutzungsverhalten aus und was sind etwaige Besuchsbarrieren?Vera Allmanritter geht in einer empirischen Studie diesen Fragen nach, liefert einen Überblick über den aktuellen Forschungsstand und stellt praxisnah dar, wie Kulturinstitutionen Audience Development für Menschen unterschiedlicher Milieus und Herkunft betreiben können.
    Abstract: Germany is a country of immigration - a fact that also challenges cultural institutions to find ways how to inspire people with migrant backgrounds with their offers, thus contributing to their active participation in the German culture. Yet what are their cultural interests, in what ways do they make use of culture and what are the possible barriers that might keep them from participating? In Vera Allmanritter's empirical study she explores these questions, provides an overview of the current state of research and describes realistically how cultural institutions can use audience development for people from different environments and backgrounds.

    Abstract: Animals have played a fundamental role in shaping human history, and the study of their remains from archaeological sites - zooarchaeology - has gradually been emerging as a powerful discipline and crucible for forging an understanding of our past. Sie beleuchten die Ursachen und Spezifika dieser aktuellen Entwicklungen in den postsozialistischen Ländern und gehen den Folgen für den europäischen Einigungsprozess nach.
    Abstract: In the last decades, historical myths have been revived in Eastern Europe: "Folk culture" or religious traditions contribute just as much to politics of national identity as do memorials of modern history, such as within the context of athletics or pop culture. Focusing on Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia as well as Ukraine, the contributions found in this volume ethnographically explore this re-discovery of nationalism from the perspective of cultural studies. They illuminate the causes and specifics of these current developments in post-socialist countries and examine the consequences they have on the European process of unification.

Diese Studie zeigt Formen und Hintergründe der »Afroamerikanophilie« auf und zeichnet damit ein ungewohntes Bild der Zeit um 1968, als ein zunehmend »exklusives« afroamerikanisches Selbstbewusstsein entstand und die »weiße« Suche nach imaginären Einlassstellen in die »schwarze« Welt zugleich eine neue Qualität gewann. Aus einer Vielzahl von Quellen werden dabei auch theoretische Fragen nach dem Zusammenspiel von Identifikation und Solidarität, Rassismus, Aneignung und Nachahmung entwickelt.

    Abstract: Benedict Anderson hat im Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung nationaler Gebilde das erfolgreiche Konzept der imagined communities geprägt. Die Schaffung einer nationalen Sprache, einer Ursprungslegende und einer Erinnerungskultur ermöglicht die Konstitution eines Feldes der nationalen Zeit. Diesem zeitlichen Feld entspricht auch ein räumliches. So wurden nationale Formationen im europäischen Raum immer wieder auf bestimmte Landschaftstypologien zurückgeführt. Aufgrund seines diskursiv-medialen Ansatzes geraten bei Anderson landschaftliche Phänomene jedoch erst gar nicht in den Blick. Rainer Guldin schließt diese theoretische Lücke hier exemplarisch für den deutschen Sprachraum. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Prozesse der Metaphorisierung, denen auch Simon Schama in seinem Buch über Landschaft und Gedächtnis nachgegangen ist.

The discursive strategies that have shaped the (West) German reactions to African American women's social activism and cultural work are examined in this study, which proposes not only a nuanced understanding of »African Americanizations« as a form of cultural exchange but also sheds new light on the role of African American culture for (West) German society, culture, and national identity.

The theoretical framework of historical consciousness offers an approach linking individual and collective uses and re-uses of the past to the question how history can and should be taught.
