Die Ergebnisse werden exemplarisch durch Projekte von verschiedenen Künstler_innen veranschaulicht sowie durch Interviews, darunter mit Werner Ruhnau, und eine Raumbühnenmatrix für zukünftige Inszenierungspraktiken und die Szenografieforschung ergänzt

In Witches, Westerners, and HIV Alexander Rödlach draws on a decade of research and work in Zimbabwe to compare beliefs about witchcraft and conspiracy theories surrounding HIV/AIDS in Africa. He shows how both types of beliefs are part of a process of blaming others for AIDS, a process that occurs around the globe but takes on local, culturally specific forms.     Abstract: The city of Tangiers in Morocco was for a long time a site of seductions, where painters, literati, and bon vivants could discover all of the delights of the Orient. After the »white dove on Africa's shoulder« disappeared from Europe's consciousness for 30 years, it is now experiencing a new economic and cultural boom. At the center of this book are the inhabitants of the city: how do they deal with the changes, and how do they recall the city's cosmopolitan past? What is the significance of the spirit-beings, what of the trance fraternities? What is the reputation of the city as a site of sin and sexual fulfillment all about?     Abstract: Topographies of nighttime entertainment have been for years developing into an indicator for quality of life - and as such, into a location factor to be taken seriously by cities and regions in intercity competition for highly qualified professionals, for whom a vibrant nightlife is important. At the same time, there is growing critique around the increasing commodification of urban spaces and times, which bring with them multiple social and economic processes of displacement and gentrification. Beyond this, nocturnal economies are associated with criminality, excessive alcohol and drug consumption, prostitution, noise and waste issues, as well as »light pollution«.     Abstract: The »underground« is an artistic approach which reacts to the historical crisis awareness of the modern era with a radical »poetry of verticality«. The »Wende« (change) stands metonymically for the moment at which the social sense of security is lost, and the city serves as its experienceable manifestation's preferred topos. Alfrun Kliems analyzes this constellation with the aid of multimedia from the East-Central European underground, with special attention to materials from between 1980 and 2010 - including work by Egon Bondy, Jacek Podsiadlo, Marcin Swietlicki, Andrzej Stasiuk, Jáchym Topol, and Peter Wawerzinek, but also from the Club der Polnischen Versager (Club of Polish Failures) in Berlin and the Orange Alternative out of WrocÊaw

    Abstract: The first and so far only introduction in German to the sociology of the body is now available in a completely revised and expanded 5th edition. It focuses on the human body as a social phenomenon and inquires in how far the body can be regarded as a product and a producer of society. Robert Gugutzer outlines the history of the body in sociology from its absent presence of the classics to the recent body turn. In addition, he presents key sociological perspectives of the body as well as suggesting important task areas for the sociology of the body and introducing »body« and »embodiment« as basic sociological concepts.

    Abstract: Zitate in Musik, Bild und Architektur sind theoretisch bisher kaum untersucht. Auf der Basis zeichen- und medientheoretischer sowie kulturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse entwickelt Anna Valentine Ullrich ein Modell, um verschiedene Zitaterscheinungen zu analysieren, und berücksichtigt dabei sowohl den Prozess des Zitierens als auch das Zitatprodukt und seine Wirkungen.Anwendung findet das Modell auf Beispiele der gebauten Architektur. Die medienübergreifende Betrachtung erweitert die Zitatforschung um neue Perspektiven und diskutiert zudem Funktionen des Zitierens als Kulturtechnik

    Abstract: Peinlichkeit wird klassischerweise entweder auf ihre sichtbare Oberflächenebene reduziert und als Fauxpas betrachtet oder emotionspsychologisch als negative Selbsteinschätzung bzw. soziale Angst begriffen. Julia Döring hingegen versteht Peinlichkeit als genuin kommunikatives Phänomen, bei dem eine innere Erfahrungs- von einer äußeren Ereignisebene unterschieden werden kann. Mit dieser analytischen Leitdifferenz entwickelt sie ein umfassendes Begriffsinventar der Peinlichkeit, das auch Sonderformen des Peinlichen wie die so genannte »Fremdscham« erfasst. Anhand einer empirischen Studie über moderne Junggesellenabschiede zeigt sie darüber hinaus Bedeutungs- und Funktionsmöglichkeiten ritualisierter Peinlichkeit auf
    Abstract: Embarrassment is classically reduced either to its visible, superficial level, and viewed as faux pas; or conceived emotionally as negative self esteem or social fear. Julia Döring, on the other hand, understands embarrassment as a genuinely communicative phenomenon, whereby an inner level of experience can be distinguished from an external level of event. With this fundamental analytical differentiation, she develops a comprehensive conceptual inventory of embarrassment, which also includes special forms of embarrassment, like so-called »Fremdscham« ( »surrogate embarrassment« ). By way of an empirical study on modern bachelor parties, she furthermore identifies possibilities, meanings and functions of ritualized embarrassment

    Abstract: Around the world under sails - how much reality can this dream take? The first German ethnography of »ordinary« circumnavigations discusses the life of cruising sailors in a uniquely comprehensive way.Cultural anthropologist and film maker Martina Kleinert investigates the social relationships on board and within the »cruising community«, but also the material culture of the cruising yacht itself in the context of mobile culture studies and travel and migration research. And she raises the central question about the historical development: Did GPS really change everything, and does this mark the end of an era? Furthermore: Did only young civilization escapists sail in the 1970s, while only wealthy retirement migrants searching for the southern sun remain today?

    Abstract: Warum bauen Menschen zu Dingen eine Beziehung auf? Einen Beitrag zur Klärung dieser Frage bietet Anamaria Depners ethnologische Betrachtung des Umzugsprozesses ins Altenheim. Hierbei überrascht der Umgang mit den eigenen Sachen - nicht zuletzt, weil er mitunter destruktiv ist. Die Analyse der Beobachtungen zum situativen Bedeutungswechsel der Dinge und der Emotionen, die Menschen ihnen entgegenbringen, bilden die Grundlage für eine allgemeine Objekttheorie, die zeigt: Der Mensch-Ding-Beziehung liegt weniger die sogenannte Agency der Dinge zu Grunde als vielmehr ihre physisch-materielle Präsenz.Die Untersuchung liefert ein empirisch fundiertes, theoretisches Modell für die Material Culture Studies sowie unterschiedliche Anknüpfungspunkte für gerontologische Forschung

    Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments.
