    Abstract: Die mit der Wiedervereinigung einhergehende Veränderung der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Strukturen wirkte sich vielfältig und nachhaltig auf das Leben der Bevölkerung in Ostdeutschland aus. Auf individueller Ebene wurden dabei Anreize für einen Lebensstilwandel geschaffen. Auf der Grundlage ökonomischer Modelle werden in dieser Arbeit die Wirkungen ökonomischer Anreize auf das individuelle Gesundheitsverhalten vor dem Hintergrund einer wirtschaftlichen Transformation untersucht. Anhand von Daten des Sozioökonomischen Panels (SOEP) wird analysiert, ob sich der Lebensstil ostdeutscher Bürger dem der Bevölkerung im Westen angenähert hat. Es läßt sich aufzeigen, daß auch mehr als zehn Jahre nach der "Wende" der ostdeutsche Transformationsprozeß als nicht abgeschlossen gelten kann.

    Abstract: Relations between France and Britain have always been uneasy and ambivalent. But in cinema the WWII changed all that for a time.     Abstract: ‘Censorship’ has become a fashionable topic, not only because of newly available archival material from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, but also because the ‘new censorship’ (inspired by the works of Foucault and Bourdieu) has widened the very concept of censorhip beyond its conventional boundaries. This volume uses these new materials and perspectives to address the relationship of censorship to cultural selection processes (such as canon formation), economic forces, social exclusion, professional marginalization, silencing through specialized discourses, communicative norms, and other forms of control and regulation. Two articles in this collection investigate these issue theoretically. The remaining eight contributions address the issues by investigating censorial practice across time and space by looking at the closure of Paul’s playhouse in 1606; the legacy of 19th century American regulations and representation of women teachers; the relationship between official and samizdat publishing in Communist Poland; the ban on Gegenwartsfilme (films about contemporary society) in East Germany in 1965/66; the censorship of modernist music in Weimar and Nazi Germany; the GDR’s censorship of jazz and avantgarde music in the early 1950s; Aesopian strategies of textual resistance in the pop music of apartheid South Africa and in the stories of Mario Benedetti

    Abstract: Von »Ereignis« und »Ereignissen« ist überall dort die Rede, wo über das Einmalige, Neue, noch nicht Dagewesene gesprochen werden soll, über eine Revolution, einen Epochenbruch, eine Erfindung, eine unvorhergesehene Wendung. Das Wort kann als Synonym der Aporien begriffen werden, denen das Nachdenken über die Zeit heute ausgesetzt ist. Zugleich stellt die Rede vom Ereignis heute eines der mächtigsten Ideologeme der Kultur- und Medienindustrie dar. Spätestens seit dem 11. September 2001 taucht der Begriff »Ereignis« häufig in der politischen Rhetorik auf. Grund genug also, zu fragen, was es mit dem »Ereignis« als Wort, Begriff, Kategorie, Anspruch und Versprechen auf sich hat.     Note: Wie versuchen politische Sprecher die Medienagenda zu beeinflussen und wie reagieren die Journalisten auf solche Versuche? Was sind die strukturellen Bedingungen und die normativen Voraussetzungen der Interaktion von Medien und Politik in der Bundesrepublik und den USA? Diese Fragen versucht der Band zu beantworten, indem er die Einstellungen, Normen und Wertorientierungen von politischen Sprechern im Umfeld der Regierung und von Journalisten in Washington und Bonn analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die politischen Kommunikationskulturen in beiden Ländern systematisch unterscheiden: Während das Verhältnis von Sprechern und Journalisten in den USA durch das Diktat der Medienregeln geprägt ist, orientieren sich die Kommunikationsbeziehungen in der Bundesrepublik an sozialem Konsens und letztlich an (partei)politischen Kalkülen. Dies liegt nicht zuletzt an den Strukturen des politischen Prozesses und des Mediensystems

    Abstract: De Republiek van Weimar staat vooral bekend als een aanloop naar het nazi-tijdperk en als een vernieuwende periode waarin jazz, Bauhaus en expressionistische films de dominante cultuur verdrongen. Minder bekend is de manier waarop Duitsland omging met de nasleep van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Filmfront Weimar beschrijft hoe Duitsland de ingrijpende ervaring van de oorlog verwerkte in oorlogsfilms uit de periode 1919-1933. Uit een analyse van vijfentwintig films rijst het beeld op van de manier waarop Duitsland zich het oorlogsverleden wilde herinneren. Een beschouwing van de talrijke filmkritieken, censuurverslagen en historiografie geven de lezer bovendien zicht op de context waarin deze films werden bekeken en beoordeeld. Niet eerder zijn deze veelal onbekende films zo grondig onderzocht.     Abstract: This study focuses in detail on the environmental compliance/competitiveness relationship with respect to the regulation of packaging waste. An important and innovative feature of the study is its emphasis on backward and forward linkages. An entire supply chain is considered: packaging manufacturers and suppliers, food processors and the food retail sector, to study the competitive effects of environmental standards on manufacturing companies and the vertical links and supply responses. A variety of regulatory regimes is represented by including within the study companies from Germany, Italy, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. While it is of note that the relatively strong regulation in Germany has indeed had effects on company behaviour, there is no evidence that environmental regulations hindered companies from achieving competitive performance. Analyses consider: the response of individual firms to different levels of regulation; the cost of compliance; impact on employment; the influence of the supply chain on environmental and competitive performance; the importance of firm size and ownership; and the impact of regulation on competitiveness, and firm competitiveness on the efficiency of adjustment to regulation

    Abstract: In the inter-war years there was much debate in Britain as to whether the best path to post-World War I regeneration would be found in the promises of science and technology, in continued and increased efficiency, in specialization and professionalization or whether the future of the nation depended on a rediscovery of older (and more authentic) ways of doing things, on a defiant anti-modernism. This debate on Britain's future was often conducted in terms of Englishness and the rebirth of a lost, more spiritual, village England. However, ‘Englishness' also entered inter-war social thinking through eclectic assimilations of diverse traditions. Prominent themes in the discourses on Britain's post-war regeneration include national character, citizenship, fitness, education, utopia, community and so on. The chapters in the present volume address these themes and break new ground by examining debates well known in political and literary history through their relations to science, medicine, architecture and ideas of social and political ‘health'
