    Abstract: Praxis Log of Manned Spaceflight 1961-2006 will open with a section entitled: Quest for Space, which will provide an explanation of the methods employed to get in and out of orbit and brief overviews of the different international space programmes. It will be a complete chronological log of all attempted orbital manned spaceflights, including the X-15 "astroflights" of the 1960s that only achieved an altitude of c. 50 miles and the two 1961 Mercury and Redstone missions which were non-orbital. There will be an image depicting each manned spaceflight, and data boxes containing brief biographies of all the space travellers and basic flight data. The main text will be a narrative of each mission, its highlights and accomplishments, including those strange facts and humorous stories that are connected to every mission. By targeting publication in September 2006, the return to flight of the Shuttle, two more Soyuz TMA launches and, quite possibly, a second Chinese manned mission. The resulting book will be a handy reference to all manned spaceflights, the names astronauts and cosmonauts who flew on each mission, and their roles and accomplishments. Recent announcements of a return to the Moon and eventual manned flights to Mars, as new hardware and procedures are developed to support these long-range programs, emphasizes the case for future updates of this book

    Abstract: Mounting pressure in the early 1960s from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to study ways of expanding the role of astronauts to conduct science on future space missions led to NASA’s conclusion that flying scientifically trained crewmembers would generate greater returns from each mission. NASA and industry studies continued investigating possibilities that could lead to the eventual creation of the first space stations using surplus Apollo hardware, through the Apollo Applications Programme (AAP). There was also a growing interest within the military to create their own manned space station programme, conducting on-orbit experiments and research with strategic advantages for national security. In October 1964 the Soviets launched Voskhod 1 whose 3-man crew were identified as the first ‘scientific passengers’ in space. A few days later NASA and the NAS had completed joint studies into the possibility of using scientists in the manned space programme, and invited scientists to apply for astronaut training. In selecting the first group of scientist-astronauts, NASA had one firm requirement; any person accepted into the programme would have to qualify as a military jet pilot. While the second group of scientists were completing their academic, survival and flight training programme, the remaining members of the first scientist-astronaut group were involved in supporting the developing Apollo Applications programme and the Apollo lunar programme

    Abstract: Ironically, the loss of Challenger in January 1986 fired my interest in space exploration more than any other single event. I was nine years old. My parents were, at the time, midway through moving house and, luckily, the TV was one of the few domestic items still to be packed. I watched the entire horror unfold live on all of the network stations. Admittedly, my fascination with rockets and astronauts, stars and planets had begun several years earlier, but Challenger's destruction turned it from an occasional hobby to a fascination which has remained with me ever since. In September 1988, aged 11,1 came home from school to watch STS-26 return the Shuttle fleet to orbital operations. Five years later, I gave a speech on the STS-51L disaster to my teacher as part of my GCSE English assessment. Another decade passed and, now a teacher myself, I returned to my school one cold Monday morning to explain to my pupils what had happened to Challenger's sister ship, Columbia, a few days earlier. In some ways, the loss of Columbia affected me more deeply than Challenger

    Abstract: "Whether deployed in space or on the surface of the earth, remote sensing instruments are increasingly becoming standard archaeological tools. Space age techniques have begun to accumulate a wealth of information and unusual evidence such as the presence of sand-buried courses of ancient rivers in the Sahara and the associated remains of human occupations. Perhaps as important, some have been able to gather priceless knowledge without disturbing fragile sites a capability that is particularly significant in this era of conservation.Remote Sensing in Archaeology illustrates the uses of advanced technology in archaeological investigation. It deals with hand-held instruments that probe the subsurface of the earth to unveil layering and associated sites, underwater exploration and photography of submerged sites and artifacts, and the utilization of imaging from aircraft and spacecraft to reveal the regional setting of archaeological sites and to assist in cultural resource management.     Abstract: Planning cities for the future links the study of urban economic competitiveness with urban planning and is able to ascertain the crucial factors for success in this area of public policy. These factors include effective governance, leadership and monitoring of performance. The author also reveals how economic turbulence--macro-economic stagnation, the emergence of competitors such as China and Central Europe and the introduction of the euro for example--all have distinct impacts on the economic development of cities. He also suggests that today's economic strengths may create tomorrow's social pathologies, a fact which city planners must always keep in mind.     Abstract: Diese Arbeit ist der Versuch, durch die Verbindung von kunsthistorischen und politikgeschichtlichen Erkenntnissen ein genaueres korrekteres Bild der behandelten Epochen zu erhalten. Die Allegorie der Austria ist dabei das Instrument zur genauen Evaluierung der jeweiligen nationalen und staatspolitischen Vorstellungen. Die Allegorie der Austria verkörpert dabei sehr genau die jeweiligen politischen Konstellationen. Die dynamische Austria mit der rudolphinischen Hauskrone bedeutet die Prädominanz des Herrscherhauses, die bürgerliche Austria mit der Mauerkrone die Vorstellungen dieser Bevölkerungsschicht, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Teil von Österreich, die Stellung des Staates über dem Herrscher der Sinne Hegels, sowie auch die siegreiche Austria mit dem Lorbeerkranz als Zeichen der Überwindung der Revolution von 1848. Gerade im Vielvölkerstaat der Habsburger, wo die divergierenden gesamtstaatlichen und nationalen Sichtweisen zu Konflikten führen mußten, ist so die Allegorie der Austria ein wichtiger Hinweis auf die jeweilige Stellung der Öffentlichkeit zu der angedeuteten Problematik. Der in der Arbeit vorgegebene Zeitraum umfaßt die Periode vom Beginn des Aufstiegs Österreichs zur Großmacht bis zum Ende der Monarchie nach dem ersten Weltkrieg. Dabei werden verschiedene künstlerische Aspekte in einer neueren und genaueren Betrachtungsweise angesprochen, wie zum Beispiel der Zyklus von 13 Porträts aus dem Umfeld von Rudolph II. im Linzer Museum Nordico, die in der großen Ausstellung über diesen Herrscher "Prag um 1600" nicht repräsentiert waren und die am Beginn der Austria-Allegorie in der bildenden Kunst stehen, oder die Denkmalsentwürfe Otto Wagners, die im Großteil der Literatur über diesen Architekten nur als Gelegenheitsentwürfe bezeichnet werden, aber in Wahrheit ernstzunehmende Auseinandersetzungen Wagners mit der nationalen Kunst sind. Ein weiterer gedanklicher Ansatzpunkt ist der Vergleich des Ringens um einen modernen Gesamtstaat vor allem seit dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts im Verhältnis zum heutigen Europa mit seinen überstaatlichen Strukturen. Dazu gehört die im Weltkrieg aufgekommene Idee von Mitteleuropa unter Einschluß der Türkei und der Wiedererrichtung des Königreiches Polen als Pufferstaat gegenüber dem revolutionären Russland.     Abstract: The intention of this paper is to give a correct inside in the review of the discussed periods. It tries to achieve this by using the means of Art History and Political History to get an exact inside. The allegorical representation of the Austria in this case is the means to get it. It stands for the specific aspects of the time, so for instance the dynastic Austria with the crown of Emperor Rudolph II. meaning the predominance of the ruling Habsburgs, the civic Austria with the mural crown showing the ideas of the middle class, especially in the German speaking parts of the country, with the acceptance of the predominance of the state over the ruler, according to Hegel, or also the victorious Austria with the laurel wreath as a symbol of the conquest of the revolution of 1848. The Habsburg monarchy including many different nations was the proper breeding ground of dissatisfaction and diversified nationalistic ideas. So the representation of the Austria is an important means of showing these ideas. The periods the paper is working on are roughly speaking starting with the time of the beginning of the position of the monarchy as one of the ruling powers of Europe until her dissolution and the end of World War I. Different aspects of art history are also dealt with. So for example the 13 portraits of Habsburg rulers in the Museum Nordico at Linz, which are positioned in the time of Rudolph II. and mark the beginning of the representation of the allegory of the Austria, or the designs for monuments by Otto Wagner which are dealt with in the many books on this architect only as a side issue, whereas they are a very important part of wagners work and show his national feelings, towards his fatherland. It is furthermore interesting to look at the nationalistic problems shown in this paper and compare them with contemporary Europe and the overcoming of them. These ideas are not new, the date back to the 19th and especially the beginning of the 20th century when the Monarchy tried to overcome the problems with the slogan of Großösterreich (Greater Austria). During World War one followed the idea of Mitteleuropa (Central Europe) including Turkey and the institution of a Polish State to hold off revolutionary Russia

    Abstract: In the Project P16901-G06 sponsored by the FWF, Camillo Sittes writings will be published for the first time in a „critical comprehensive edition“, scheduled for six volumes. The basis for this edition is provided by the “Sitte Nachlass-Archiv” which is owned by the Technical University, Vienna. The writings of volume one consist of Sittes publications in the field of art criticism and the applied arts. Those writings have been, in most cases, shorter publications in newspapers and journals which are difficult to access today. The unpublished and undated autograph “Faust, Fliegender Holländer und Meistersinger” as well as one letter to Richard Wagner from 1873, which is not contained in the Sitte archive, supplement his writings in the field of art criticism. The writings in the field of applied arts throw a new light onto the work of Camillo Sitte as director of vocational schools (i.e. Kunstgewerbeschulen), who elsewise is predominantly known as urban theorist and urban planner only. Those wrintigs give testimony to the political ambitions to foster the applied arts in the k. u. k. monarchy around Rudolf Eitelberger von Edelberg. They comprise almost all areas of arts and craft, ranging from traditional and local trades to the beginnings of industrial production. The writings in the field of art criticism derive mainly from Sittes early time in Vienna and document the vivid debates on the question of art between historism and emerging modern currents like secession, impressionism and expressionism. Furthermore, this thematic field contains a series of writings on Richard Wagner’s conception of art which illustrate Sittes own apprehension of art, as it will have impact especially on his chief work, "City Planning According to Its Artistic Principles" from 1889 (vol. 3 of this edition).Michael Mönninger and Wolfgang Sonne / Ruth Hanisch put these texts into context, inform about the current state of research and establish connections to others of Camillo Sitte’s fields of activity, which will be documented in the volumes of this edition to come. Furthermore, there is an extensive essay on the biography of Camillo Sitte by Michael Mönninger. Editorial work is done by Sonja Hnilica and Bernhard Langer. Hierbei handelt es sich überwiegend um heute schwer zugängliche kürzere Veröffentlichungen in Tageszeitungen oder Fachzeitschriften. Der unveröffentlichte und undatierte Autograph "Faust, Fliegender Holländer und Meistersinger" sowie ein im Nachlass nicht enthaltener Brief an Richard Wagner von 1873 ergänzen Sittes Veröffentlichungen zur Kunstkritik. Die Schriften zum Kunstgewerbe werfen ein neues Licht auf das Schaffen des vorwiegend als Stadtbautheoretiker und Städtebauer bekannten Gewerbeschuldirektors Camillo Sitte.     Abstract: In the past ten years, leaders in engineering industries have identified specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of their workforce if they want to be innovative and competitive in a global marketplace. Engineering education programs have kept pace with emerging disciplinary knowledge, research and technologies, but have been less successful in ensuring that their graduates acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes desired by industry. This book describes an approach to engineering education that integrates a comprehensive set of personal and interpersonal skills, and process, product, and system building skills with disciplinary knowledge. The education of engineers is set in the context of engineering practice, that is, Conceiving, Designing, Implementing, and Operating (CDIO) through the entire lifecycle of engineering processes, products, and processes. The CDIO approach and the topics in the book will be of increasing interest in the next five to ten years. At the start of the CDIO Initiative, four leading engineering programs in the United States and Sweden adopted the CDIO approach and collaborated in its development and implementation. In less than six years, the collaboration has grown to include more than twenty programs in nine different countries. This book will be both a description of the development and implementation of the CDIO approach, and a guide to engineering programs worldwide who seek to improve their programs.     Abstract: On 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man to orbit the Earth. One month later, President John F. Kennedy challenged the American nation to land a man on the Moon before the decade was out. On 16 July 1969, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin set off in Apollo 11 to attempt this audacious mission, and succeeded magnificently. This book tells the story of Apollo 11, starting with crew selection and training, the choice of the landing site, and the assembly of the space vehicle, then a detailed account of the mission, featuring the lunar landing and moonwalk, and a review of how our knowledge of the Moon's history was revolutionised as a result. The story is enlivened by dialogue between the astronauts in space and the flight controllers in Mission Control

    Abstract: This multidisciplinary work explores ways of making environmental policy decisions in managing public goods and natural parks with the goal of maximizing economic benefits to society. The contributors to the volume seek the best strategies for improving the environmental sustainability and quality of a public resource by showing how to develop quantitative information about the natural area and how it interacts with the economy. Such an analysis can be used to define policies that encourage interactions among institutions, local economic agents and park users.     Abstract: Das vorgelegte Werk ist als 1. Band einer zweiteilig geplanten Publikation verfasst worden, die sich mit den kulturhistorischen und architekturgeschichtlichen Aspekten der Hotel- und Villenbauten am Semmering im südlichen Niederösterreich beschäftigt. Die Arbeit ist eine Fortsetzung eines vom FWF geförderten Forschungsprojekts (Nr. P 13959 ) unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung und Begutachtung des Antragstellers (Univ.-Prof.Dr. Mario Schwarz). Gegenstand der Untersuchungen und Ausführungen dieses Bandes ist die kulturgeschichtliche Stellung und Bedeutung der Südbahngesellschaft bei der Erschließung der Semmering-Region als erstrangig bedeutendes Naherholungsgebiet des Wiener Bürgertums im späten 19. Jahrhundertwende bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die Aufschließung dieses Gebiets hauptsächlich auf die Initiative des Direktors der Südbahngesellschaft Friedrich Schüler sowie auf den Hofbildhauer Franz Schönthaler zurückgeht. Die Umsetzung der Planungen im Bereich der Hotelarchitektur ist in der ersten Phase auf Architekt Franz Wilhelm, den Mitarbeiter des Erbauers des Wiener Südbahnhofes Wilhelm Flattich zurückzuführen, in einer zweiten Phase auf die Architekten Alfred Wildhack und Robert v. Morpurgo. Die Forschungen der Verfasserin erschließen sowohl zu den bisher gänzlich unbearbeiteten Werken dieser Architekten, als auch zu ihren Biographien wichtige Erkenntnisse. Völlig neue, wichtige Ergebnisse brachte die Untersuchung hinsichtlich der Zusammenhänge der Hotelbauten am Semmering mit den großen Hotelanlagen der Südbahngesellschaft in Toblach (Dobiacco; von Wilhelm Flattich) und Abbazia (Opatija; von Alfred Wildhack u.a.) als Aktivitäten einer corporate identity der Bahngesellschaft. Diese Ergebnisse stellen die Südbahngesellschaft mit an die Weltspitze der berühmten Hotelaanlagen von Eisenbahngesellschaften, für die die Autorin zahlreiche Vergleichsbeispiele von Großbritannien bis in die USA anführt. Die Verfasserin erschließt damit den Bereich eines bisher erst in wenigen Ansätzen erforschten Gebiets der Architekturgeschichte. Sowohl vom Ambiente als auch von den gewählten Stileigenschaften der Bauten bestehen jedoch auch wichtige Bezüge der Hotelarchitektur des Semmering zu den Hotelbauten in der Schweiz.     Abstract: The present manuscript is intended to be part I of a publication in two volumes, which deals with the historic architecture in the region of "Semmering" in southern Lower Austria from the point of view of art history, cultural history and history of architecture. The study was attempted in continuation of the FWF-project P 13959 under scientifical direction and supervision of the applicant (Prof.Dr. Mario Schwarz). Main topic of this study is the role and importance of the "Suedbahngesellschaft" (Southern Railway Company) in the process of the formation of the Semmering-region as a first-rate holiday resort of the Viennese society during the late 19th century up to the beginning of World War I. The study shows that the forming of this region mainly depended on the initiative of Friedrich Schueler, the Southern Railways Company's director, and Franz Schoenthaler, sculptor in duty of the Imperial Court. The materialization of the planning in the field of hotel-architecture in the first phase was due to architect Franz Wilhelm - collaborator of Wilhelm Flattich, who designed the railway-station of the Southern Railway Company at Vienna, in the second phase due to the architects Alfred Wildhack and Robert v. Morpurgo. The author's research brought a lot of new insight in work and biographies of these architects, who have been neglected so far by the art history. New, important results were achieved by this study concerning the links between the Semmering hotel-architecture and the grand hotel-resorts at Dobiacco (Toblach; architect: Wilhelm Flattich) and Opatija (Abbazia; architect: Alfred Wildhack e.a.), built by the Southern Railway Company as well, which have to be seen as activities in sense of the company's "corporate identity". Thus the company appears among the leading entrepreneurs in the world as founder of railway-hotels. The author presents several famous examples of this kind of hotels from Great Britain to the USA. Here the study is entering a field of architectural research, which still stands at the beginning. There are also important relations between the Semmering hotel-architecture and the historical hotels of Switzerland. In a large panorama the author includes the Semmering hotels in the general regional development of the "Wiener Hausberge" (hills and mountains near Vienna) during the second half of 19th century, especially in the time after the construction of the Semmering railway. Es bietet sich das Bild einer in der Wiener Gesellschaft einflussreichen sozialen Gruppe, die hier aus persönlichen, teils über verwandtschaftliche Beziehungen, teils über geschäftliche Interessen vermittelten Motiven das zur Entstehungszeit neuartige, zukunftsweisende Konstrukt eines Urlaubs- und Erholungsortes im Sinne eines "Freizeitparadieses" schuf. Die dabei entstandene Villenkolonie diente durchaus nicht nur zum privaten Gebrauch, sondern wurde gleichzeitig auch fremdenverkehrsorientiert - teils im Zusammenhang mit dem Hotelbau - genutzt. In seinen stilanalytischen Untersuchungen gelingt es Günther Buchinger überzeugend nachzuweisen, dass der vielfach unter dem Begriff "Heimatstil" , "vernakuläre Architektur" oder "Schweizerhausstil" zusammengefasste Typus tatsächlich als eine Sonderform der allgemeinen Entwicklung des Historismus an der Wende vom Strengen Historismus zum Späthistorismus zu bewerten ist. Im Sinne des Strengen Historismus wurden Vorlagenmuster konkreter Architekturvorbilder - vorzugsweise aus Publikationen über historische Schweizer Landhausarchitektur - herangezogen und extensiv zitiert .     Abstract: The present manuscript is intended to be part II of a publication in two volumes, but at the same time it can be seen as an independent, complete study. It deals with the different aspects of the historic architecture in the region of "Semmering" in southern Lower Austria. The book is the result of the FWF-project P 13959, in which one year of research under scientifically direction and supervision of the applicant (Prof. Dr. Mario Schwarz) was dedicated to intensive studies in art history, cultural history and history of architecture of this region. The author Dr. Guenther Buchinger - responsible collaborator of the project - attempted a large-scale research of the historical villas and county-houses at Semmering. The study contains a full, detailed documentation of the history and construction of the buildings and much information about the employers and the building contractors and architects as well. Consequently the author elaborated a comprehensive stylistic analyse. By the way of elucidating the circumstances of the construction of the buildings, it was possible to reconsider the background of the creating of this artificial settlement at Semmering. A certain social group of great influence among the Viennese bourgeoisie appears in this study, which created this recreation resort as a "vacation-paradise", at that time a complete new, futuristic project, motivated by personal and commercial interests likewise. The result, a colony of villas, was used not only for private purpose, but at the same time for tourism, partially in connection with the hotel buildings.In his stylistic analyse Guenther Buchinger gives a convincing proof that the phenomenon, which in general is subsumed as "homeland-style", "vernacular architecture" or "Swiss-cottage-style", in fact is a particular form of historicism between "severe historicism" and "late historicism". In the sense of "severe historicism" patterns of genuine architecture - by preference from publications on historical Swiss architecture - were used and extensively quoted. Consequently the forms and details developed in the style of "late historicism" in free evolution and eventually took into the formal repertory also elements of "Jugendstil".     Abstract: The history is intended as the first comprehensive examination of the role of Austrian history in the visual arts of the Habsburg monarchy between 1804 and 1918. At its centre are the following three key questions: What status did the general preoccupation with history acquire? What where the favorite historical subjects for artistic representation? What significance did the Habsburgs´own history (almost endlessly "extendible" all the way back to its fictitious mythical beginnings) hold for the issues of the day? Works of art contribute to the creation of traditions in a double sense: a given work simultaneously contains and creates history. A work of art is also a medium for social identification, facilitating communication between the monarch and the people. Investigating the characteristics of the different "reflections on history" in the visual arts in Austria in the 19th century led to the practical necessity of significantly widening the known material basis. It became apparent that previous research was based on a relatively limited range of works (primarily "high art") and failed to relate these works to literary documents from the fiields of historiography or belles-lettres. I believe it is only by expanding the basis in terms of both word and picture documentation that a reliable overview of the different strategies pursued by Habsburg iconography can be gained. Not only did my chosen methodology seem expedient, and indeed almost indispensable for an examination of concrete historical cases, it also reveals that this interlocking approach (furthermore justified by the nature of the material) based on interrelating picture and text media contains the very key to a proper investigation of the historical art of the 19th century. In approaching the central questions, this study begins with an introduction that looks at concepts and methodology and charts the difficult formation of the "Austrian nation" from "Casa d´Austria" to the Habsburg "nation state". The second chapter examines the relevance of the Austrian 18th century in the consciousness of the following century based on the examples of rulers Maria Theresia and Joseph II.     Abstract: Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Bedeutung der österreichischen Geschichte in der bildenden Kunst der Habsburgermonarchie von 1804 bis 1918 erstmals umfassend deutlich zu machen. Im Zentrum stehen vor allem folgende drei Fragen: Welchen Stellenwert gewann die Beschäftigung mit Geschichte ganz allgemein? Auf welche historischen Ereignisse bezog man sich vorzugsweise in den Darstellungen der Kunst? In welcher Hinsicht besaß die eigene - bis zu fiktiven mythischen Anfängen gleichsam beliebig "verlängerbare" - Geschichte für gegenwärtige Fragestellungen Bedeutung? Kunstwerke tragen zur Konstruktion von Traditionen bei - und dies in höchst doppelsinniger Weise: das jeweilige Werk enthält und erzeugt zugleich Geschichte. Es ist darüber hinaus ein soziales "Identifikationsmedium" und vermittelt zwischen dem Regenten und den Bürgern. Die Charakteristika der unterschiedlichen "Geschichtsreflexionen" in Österreich im 19. Jahrhundert in den Medien der bildenden Kunst zu untersuchen brachte die praktische Notwendigkeit mit sich, die bekannte Materialbasis beträchtlich zu erweitern. Es zeigte sich, daß die Forschung bisher zumeist von einem eher begrenzten Werkbestand (vor allem der "Hochkunst") ausging und diesen nicht mit literarischen Dokumenten aus Historiographie und Belletristik in Beziehung setzte. Erst auf dieser entsprechend erweiterten Basis von Dokumenten in Wort und Bild läßt sich meines Erachtens ein verläßliches Gesamtbild für die unterschiedlichen Strategien habsburgischer Ikonographie gewinnen. Die gewählte Methodik erschien nicht nur zweckmäßig und darüber hinaus für den konkreten historischen Fall geradezu unerläßlich, sondern sie zeigt auch, daß gerade in dieser verschränkten (und in der Ausrichtung des Materials begründeten) Betrachtungsweise aufeinander bezogener Bild- und Textmedien der Schlüssel für die Erforschung der österreichischen Historienkunst des 19. Jahrhunderts liegt. Die vorliegende Arbeit nähert sich den zentralen Fragestellungen über eine Einführung zu Begrifflichkeit und Methodik und verfolgt die schwierige Formierung der "Nation Österreich" von der "Casa d´Austria" bis zum habsburgischen "Gesamtstaat". Die Funktion der Festbeschreibung wird im Kontext der frühneuzeitlichen Zeremoniellästhetik bestimmt. Die Untersuchung der Paratexte fokussiert das aporetische rhetorische Selbstverständis der Textsorte zwischen den Stilansprüchen von Casualrhetorik und Historiographie. Schwerpunktmäßig untersucht werden die Entstehung der Festbeschreibung im 16. und ihre topische Revision im späten 18. Jahrhundert.
    Abstract: With reference to the texts, typography, and illustrations of various kinds of ceremonial description, the study analyzes the topicology of this text genre, the task of which is to reduce the sensual complexity of courtly festivities and concentrate entirely on ceremonially relevant features. The function of ceremonial descriptions is determined in the context of the ceremonial aesthetics prevalent in the early modern age. Investigation of the paratexts situates the aporetic rhetorical identity of the genre between the stylistic demands of reader-oriented rhetoric on the one hand and historiography on the other. Emphasis is given to the origins of ceremonious description in the 16th century and the topicological changes it underwent in the late 18th century.

    Abstract: The motivation behind this book is the desire to integrate complexity theory into economic models of technological evolution. By means of developing an evolutionary model of complex technological systems, the book contributes to the neo-Schumpetarian literature on innovation, diffusion and technological paradigms. Recent advances in complexity theory provide a new understanding of technological innovation and complex problem-solving. This book offers an approach based on Stuart Kauffman's NK-model of complex systems to better understand and analyse search strategies that firms apply to develop new technologies. The models deal with a range of topics including bounded rationality, myopia, decomposability, modularity and the emergence of technological paradigms.     Abstract: This volume is the last and final part of a trilogy on a detailed history of Vienna. It covers the period from 1790 until the present times. For the decisive forces as well as the inhabitants of the city this era of the urban development of Vienna has to be counted among the most dramatic periods characterised by a great number of real breaks in history. Napoleonic occupation, the revolution of 1848, the constitutional as well as the economic and social changes from the middle of the 19th century onwards, the final end of the position as "Reichshaupt- und Residenzstadt" (capital and residential city of the Austro-Hungarian empire) at the end of World War I, the challenging and complicated inter-war-period, Vienna's fate under Nazi-domination, the air raid of World War II and its end as well as the years after 1945 so far never described in such a comprehensive manner - all these events establish the chronological screen for the description and mark decisive incidents being treated here. In a chronological framework six authors arrange a pattern of Vienna's political, social, economic and cultural history. An innovative step is marked by the attempt to give a description of the ever so decisive periods like the "Fin-de-Siècle" and the complicated years after 1918 considering the intellectual mainstream and including men of letters and their works as contemporary witnesses and references. Vienna's development after 1945 - regarding the political history until the elections of 2001, the social and economic history in some aspects even furthermore - has not been treated in such a profound manner so far. Diese Epoche der Wiener Stadtentwicklung zählt für die gestaltenden Kräfte in der Stadt wie auch für deren Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner zweifellos zu den besonders dramatischen, von vielen regelrechten Brüchen charakterisierten Zeitspannen. Napoleonische Besetzung, die Revolution des Jahres 1848, die konstitutionellen wie die wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Veränderungen ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, das Ende der Stellung als Reichshaupt- und Residenzstadt mit dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges, die schwierige Epoche der Zwischenkriegszeit, die Geschicke Wiens unter der NS-Herrschaft, die Bombenjahre des Zweiten Weltkrieges und dessen Ende wie natürlich auch die bislang noch niemals derart umfassend behandelten Jahre seit 1945 - all das bildet die Zeitfolie, vor der die Darstellung abläuft, markiert einschneidende Geschehnisse, denen sie sich widmet. Sechs Autorinnen und Autoren vermitteln in einem vom Grundsatz her chronologischen Aufbau ein Bild, das verwoben in die (politische) Ereignisgeschichte der sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Entwicklung breiten Raum einräumt. Dabei stellt der Versuch, die für Wien so prägenden Epochen des "Fin-de-Siècle" und dann der so ungemein schwierigen Jahre nach 1918 unter starker Berücksichtigung geistesgeschichtlicher Strömungen und mehrfach mittels des Einbaus literarischer Zeitzeugen bzw. -zeugnisse zu behandeln, einen methodisch durchaus innovativen Weg dar. Die Jahre der Wiener Entwicklung nach 1945, im Hinblick auf die politische Geschichte bis zur Gemeinderats- und Landtagswahl von 2001, bezüglich der sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung in Ansätzen sogar noch darüber hinaus, haben bislang noch niemals in derart eingehender Form Darstellung gefunden.     Abstract: Microprocessor cores used for SOC design are the direct descendents of Intels original 4004 microprocessor. Just as packaged microprocessor ICs vary widely in their attributes, so do microprocessors packaged as IP cores. However, SOC designers still compare and select processor cores the way they previously compared and selected packaged microprocessor ICs. The big problem with this selection method is that it assumes that the laws of the microprocessor universe have remained unchanged for decades. This assumption is no longer valid. Processor cores for SOC designs can be far more plastic than microprocessor ICs for board-level system designs. Shaping these cores for specific applications produces much better processor efficiency and much lower system clock rates.
    Abstract: Together, Tensilicas Xtensa and Diamond processor cores constitute a family of software-compatible microprocessors covering an extremely wide performance range from simple control processors, to DSPs, to 3-way superscalar processors. Yet all of these processors use the same software-development tools so that programmers familiar with one processor in the family can easily switch to another. This book emphasizes a processor-centric MPSOC (multiple-processor SOC) design style shaped by the realities of the 21st-century and nanometer silicon. It advocates the assignment of tasks to firmware-controlled processors whenever possible to maximize SOC flexibility, cut power dissipation, reduce the size and number of hand-built logic blocks, shrink the associated verification effort, and minimize the overall design risk. An essential, no-nonsense guide to the design of 21st-century mega-gate SOCs using nanometer silicon.

Darüber hinaus gibt der Band einen differenzierten Überblick über die Pläne und Ziele der in diesen drei Städten verwirklichten Museumsbauten, wobei auch die Konzepte der Eröffnungsausstellungen berücksichtigt werden. Die Ergebnisse der materialreichen Studie, die sich gleichermaßen an Kulturpolitiker, Architekten, Stadtplaner und Museumsdirektoren wendet, können einen wertvollen Beitrag dazu leisten, bei zukünftigen Museumsplanungen Fehler zu vermeiden und aus den Erfahrungen der Kollegen zu lernen

    Abstract: "The essays in this book are adapted from papers presented at the 24th Annual Conference of the Theoretical Archaeology Group, held at the University of Manchester, in December 2002. The conference session ""An Industrial Revolution? Future Directions for Industrial Archaeology,"" was jointly devised by the editors, and sponsored by English Heritage, with the intention of gathering together leading industrial and historical archaeologists from around the world. However, just as Manchester is being transformed by regeneration, shaking off many of the negative connotations associated with factory-based industrial production, and remaking itself as a 21st century city, then so too, is the archaeological study of industrialisation being transformed. Over the past decade, industrial archaeology has emerged as a theoretically driven subfield. Research has begun to meaningfully engage with such weighty issues as globalisation, post/modernity, power, innovation and invention, slavery and captivity, class, ethnic, and gender identities, social relations of technology and labour, and the spread and diversification of western capitalism. With contributions from an international group of authors, this volume highlights the current thought in industrial archaeology, as well as explores future theoretical and methodological directions. Together, these chapters further the process of meaningful engagement with such weighty issues as globalization, post/modernity, power, production and consumption, innovation and invention, class, ethnic, and gender identities, social relations of technology and labour, and the spread and diversification of western capitalism. Industrial Archaeology: Future Directions will be of interest to historical and urban archaeologists, architectural historians, preservation agencies, archaeological consulting organizations, cultural resource managers, and students of these disciplines."
