    Abstract: People, livestock and wildlife have lived together on the savannas of East Africa for millennia. Their coexistence has declined as conservation policies increasingly exclude people and livestock from national wildlife parks, and fast-growing human populations and development push wildlife and pastoralists onto ever more marginal lands. The result has been less wildlife, and more pastoral people struggling to diversify their livelihoods as access to pasture and water becomes harder to find. This book examines those livelihood and land use strategies in detail. In an integrated research effort that involved researchers, local communities and policy analysts, surveys were carried out across a wide range of Maasai communities providing contrasting land tenure and national policies and varying degrees of intensification of agriculture, tourism and other activities. The aim was to create a better understanding of current livelihood patterns and the decisions facing Maasai at the start of the 21st Century in the context of ongoing environmental, political, and societal change. With a research design that linked quantitative and qualitative methods and research teams across multiple pastoral sites for the first time, a comparison of livelihood strategies and returns to livestock, crops, wildlife tourism, and other activities across Kenyan and Tanzanian Maasailand was possible. While livestock remains the critical anchor for most Maasai households, many are obtaining income from a variety of alternative sources. Unfortunately, income from wildlife/tourism, an option seen as most desirable by many because of its potential to provide economically and environmentally ‘win-win’ situations, still benefits relatively few Maasai. Similarly, although governments favor agricultural intensification, significant crop income or enhanced food security from subsistence cropping elude most. This book provides a rich source of new data from across Maasailand and its unparallelled multi-site comparative analyses give valuable lessons of broader applicability. It is a valuable resource for anyone, researchers, development workers and policy makers, who is concerned with improving environmental as well as economic security on the wildlife-rich Maasai pastoral lands in Kenya and Tanzania

    Abstract: The central aim of many studies in population research and demography is to explain cause-effect relationships among variables or events. For decades, population scientists have concentrated their efforts on estimating the ‘causes of effects’ by applying standard cross-sectional and dynamic regression techniques, with regression coefficients routinely being understood as estimates of causal effects. The standard approach to infer the ‘effects of causes’ in natural sciences and in psychology is to conduct randomized experiments. In population studies, experimental designs are generally infeasible. In population studies, most research is based on non-experimental designs (observational or survey designs) and rarely on quasi experiments or natural experiments. Using non-experimental designs to infer causal relationships—i.e. relationships that can ultimately inform policies or interventions—is a complex undertaking. Specifically, treatment effects can be inferred from non-experimental data with a counterfactual approach. In this counterfactual perspective, causal effects are defined as the difference between the potential outcome irrespective of whether or not an individual had received a certain treatment (or experienced a certain cause). The counterfactual approach to estimate effects of causes from quasi-experimental data or from observational studies was first proposed by Rubin in 1974 and further developed by James Heckman and others. This book presents both theoretical contributions and empirical applications of the counterfactual approach to causal inference.

    Abstract: This book deals with the early history of agriculture in a defined part of Western Europe: the loess belt west of the river Rhine. It is a well-illustrated book that integrates existing and new information starting with the first farmers and ending when food production was no longer the chief source of livelihood for the entire population. The long period, 5300 BC – AD 1000, is divided into six stages. Each stage has its own chapter with subchapters devoted to crops, crop cultivation, livestock and livestock handling, the farm and its yard, and the farm in connection with other farms and the outside world. Every chapter starts with a short outline of the cultural context. The crop plants and animals are described, together with their origin. The subchapters on crop cultivation deal with the operational chain from staking out fields to storage. The introduction of tools such as the plough, the wheel and wagon, and the scythe is discussed. Farm buildings, or at least their groundplans, are presented. The clustering of farms into hamlets or the absence of such aggregations is described. Two chapters deal with the impact of farming on the landscape. The eight chapters on farming and landscape are preceded by an introduction and a chapter on the sources of information. The book ends with a chapter ‘summarizing six millennia of agriculture’, a list of glossary terms and an index. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers in archaeology, history and agriculture, and to landscape engineers.

    Abstract: Throughout the world, migration is an increasingly important and diverse component of population change, both at national and sub-national levels.     Abstract: Abstract: "In Deutschland werden das niedrige Geburtenniveau, die steigende Lebenserwartung und Effekte der gegebenen Altersstruktur Prozesse der Schrumpfung und Alterung der Bevölkerung verstärken. In Zukunft ist daher mit einem weiter zunehmenden Einfluss von Wanderungsbewegungen auf die Bevölkerungsentwicklung zu rechnen. Unsicher ist jedoch, wie sich die künftige Zuwanderung entwickeln wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigen sich die Ausführungen mit dem bisherigen Einfluss und den zukünftigen Wirkungen der Migration auf die Bevölkerungsentwicklung. Hierbei wird das Wanderungsgeschehen auf nationaler, europäischer und globaler Ebene dargestellt, wobei Deutschland besondere Aufmerksamkeit zuteil wird. Diskutiert wird zudem die Frage, wie die künftige Wanderungsentwicklung nach Deutschland einzuschätzen ist. Die Ausführungen verfolgen das Ziel, einen detaillierten Überblick über den Zusammenhang von Migration und demographischem Wandel zu bieten." (Autorenreferat)

    Abstract: Planning cities for the future links the study of urban economic competitiveness with urban planning and is able to ascertain the crucial factors for success in this area of public policy. These factors include effective governance, leadership and monitoring of performance. The author also reveals how economic turbulence--macro-economic stagnation, the emergence of competitors such as China and Central Europe and the introduction of the euro for example--all have distinct impacts on the economic development of cities. He also suggests that today's economic strengths may create tomorrow's social pathologies, a fact which city planners must always keep in mind. Peter Kresl's book offers examples of cities that got it right and others that did not

    Abstract: This edition of the Development Centre's annual report on policy coherence focuses on migration. The book examines the costs and benefits of migration for developing countries and how these flows can be better organised to yield greater benefits for all parties concerned -- migrant-sending countries, migrant-receiving countries, and the migrants themselves. It takes stock of what we know about the effects of migration on development, and distills from that knowledge a set of policy recommendations for sending and receiving countries alike. It draws on a large number of country and regional case studies co-ordinated by the OECD Development Centre to illustrate the mechanisms that link migration and development: labour-market effects, brain drain, remittances, diaspora networks and return migration.

    Abstract: 'Emergency on planet Cape Town' introduces the emotional production of urban space as an important dimension for understanding urban dynamics in post-conflict societies such as South Africa. Drawing on a wide range of geographical, sociological, anthropological and psycho-analytical literature and on an analysis of three contemporary examples of urban transformation projects in the City of Cape Town, the author suggests that current integration politics are failing because of a lack of recognition of the politics of emotion that have shaped the city in the past. What is needed, argues the author, is a spatial politics of reconciliation that addresses both the emotional meaning attached to urban spaces, but also the very concept and image of Cape Town as a European city. 〈engl.〉

    Abstract: Künftiges Altern in Deutschland gehört wie die Arbeitslosigkeit zu den großen gesellschaftlichen Problemfeldern. Geringe Geburtsraten und eine immer höhere Lebenserwartung verschieben die Relation zwischen Erwerbstätigen und den über 60 Jahre alten Menschen bis Mitte des Jahrhunderts auf 1:2. Die finanzielle Absicherung und damit der Lebensstandard werden kontinuierlich absinken. Erfahrungsgemäß beflügeln Notzeiten die Phantasie, und so wird man sich auf Möglichkeiten besinnen, die den Menschen finanziell bestehen können. Es bieten sich heute bereits funktionierende Tauschsysteme an, die trotz steter Zunahme aber noch weitgehend ein Nischendasein führen. Das theoretische Gebäude des „Kommunitarismus“ bildet den Rahmen für „bürgerliches Engagement“ in Tauschsystemen. Es geht um ein Mehr an Verantwortung des Individuums und um ein weniger an Staat. Die Autorin befragt ihrem Buch Menschen, die sich auf den Weg gemacht haben, neue Lebensentwürfe im höheren Lebensalter zu erproben. Sie untersucht Tauschsysteme: Seniorengenossenschaften, Zeittauschbörsen und selbstorganisierte, meist intergenerative Wohnprojekte. Der empirische Teil der Arbeit kann vor allem schon heutigen Arbeitslosen (Zeitreichen, aber Geldarmen) mit den beschriebenen Zeittauschbörsen (es gibt derzeit über 200 in Deutschland) beistehen. Es werden in allen drei Projekten auch Probleme benannt, was bislang selten in der Literatur geschieht

    Abstract: The themes of the book focus on the origin, development, interactions, and migrations of the Scythians, in Eurasia and their relationships with the environment of 1st millennium BC. Without doubt, the environment played an important role in the life of ancient nomadic populations, forming the basis of their economies and influencing various aspects of their mode of life.The main focus is on the huge landmass of Eurasia where apart from global-scale environmental changes, local environmental change, including the physical landscape of forest, steppe, forest-steppe and so on changed. During the 1st millennium BC, important cultural processes occurred throughout the steppe belt, which eventually resulted in the emergence of "Scythian-type" cultures. The Scythian sites have been investigated since the 18th century, resulting in the discovery of outstanding archaeological assemblages and works of art which are displayed in the best museums of the world. Numerous puzzles relating to the Scythians' origins, interactions, migrations and their detailed chronology are discussed and new data presented.

    Abstract: Im Zuge der Wiedervereinigung kam es nach 1990 zu massiven Binnenwanderungsbewegungen zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland. Die ungleichen Lebensverhältnisse haben vor allem viele Ostdeutsche veranlasst, umzuziehen - in der berechtigten Erwartung, im Westen attraktivere Arbeitsplätze und eine höhere Lebensqualität zu finden. Aber auch von Region zu Region gibt es im Westen wie im Osten jeweils enorme demographische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Unterschiede. Faktoren wie Arbeitslosigkeit, Familienstand oder Lebensphase haben als so genannte "Motivatoren" Schlüsselbedeutung für Umzugsentscheidungen. Martin Geis beschäftigt sich mit den "harten" (ökonomischen) wie auch den "weichen" (außerökonomischen) Motivatoren. Er untersucht detailliert, in welchem Zusammenhang Migrationsneigung und regionale Rahmenbedingungen in Deutschland stehen. Zur Überprüfung seiner Hypothesen verwendet er das äußerst umfangreiche und repräsentative Datenmaterial der Perspektive-Deutschland-Umfrage 2001 mit ca.170.000 Teilnehmern.
