Reddy offers a theory of emotions which both critiques and expands upon recent research in the fields of anthropology and psychology. Exploring the links between emotion and cognition, between culture and emotional expression, Reddy applies this theory of emotions to the processes of history. He demonstrates how emotions change over time, how emotions have a very important impact on the course of events, and how different social orders either facilitate or constrain emotional life. In an investigation of Revolutionary France, where sentimentalism in literature and philosophy had promised a new and unprecedented kind of emotional liberty, Reddy's theory of emotions and historical change is successfully put to the test

    Abstract: Klimawandel, Artensterben, Viehseuchen und Naturkatastrophen bestimmen vielerorts die Debatten um die globale Zukunft. Hierbei erscheint es oft, als seien diese Phänomene völlig neuartige Entwicklungen, die erst jetzt unsere Aufmerksamkeit geweckt haben. Dabei sind die meisten gegenwärtigen Probleme durchaus nicht neu. Frühere Generationen haben sich sehr wohl Gedanken um ihre Umwelt gemacht und viele der gegenwärtigen Diskussionen sind historisch bedingt. Daher erfordert die Bewältigung unserer Probleme nicht nur zukunftsorientiertes Denken, sondern auch ein historisches Verständnis der politischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und ökologischen Hintergründe unserer gegenwärtigen Situation. Unter den Themenkomplexen "Spektrum der Umweltgeschichte", "Aus der Geschichte lernen", "Fast vergessene Debatten der Umweltgeschichte" und "Umweltgeschichte im Bildungssystem"erörtern die Autoren die Bedeutung der Umweltgeschichte für die Lösung zukünftiger Probleme. Der vorliegende Band ist das Ergebnis eines Workshops, den das DFG-Graduiertenkolleg Interdisziplinäre Umweltgeschichte. Naturale Umwelt und gesellschaftliches Handeln in Mitteleuropa am 16. und 17. Juli 2008 in Göttingen unter dem Titel "Umweltgeschichte und Umweltzukunft - Zur gesellschaftlichen Relevanz einer jungen Disziplin" veranstaltet hat.
    Abstract: Global climate change, the extinction of species, animal pests and natural catastrophes dominate debates on the future of the earth. Often these phenomena are considered as something new, which they are not, and many of today's discussions have their roots in the past. Therefore, to cope with our problems, forward-looking thinking has to be combined with understanding for the political, economic, social, and ecological background of our present situation. In their various contributions the authors discuss the importance of the history of ecology. The book comprises the results of a workshop on "History of Ecology and the Future of Ecology" held at the DFG Graduate College in Göttingen in July, 2008.

    Abstract: Sterben und Tod stellen in der Gegenwartsgesellschaft einen komplexen Problembereich dar, der verschiedenste gesellschaftliche Bereiche und Diskurse – private wie öffentliche, theoretische wie praktische – betrifft. Im vorliegenden Band wird durch ein interdisziplinäres Spektrum der aktuelle Stand der medizinisch-ethischen und juristischen wie auch der geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Diskussion und Forschung dargestellt. Zum anderen wird die grundsätzliche Haltung unserer auf menschliche und technische Leistung und Fortschrittsgläubigkeit ausgerichteten Gesellschaft gegenüber dem Phänomen Tod und die Problematik einer heute erschwerten sinnhaften Deutung des Todes erörtert. Zwei interkulturelle Fallbeispiele ergänzen die wissenschaftlichen Beiträge. Zur Sprache kommt aber auch, wie der Tod als Begrenzung und Zielpunkt des Lebens positiv gedeutet und möglicherweise mit einem ,Endlich" erwartet werden kann.Mit Beiträgen von: Jürgen Mittelstraß, Wolfgang van den Daele, Klaus Kutzer, Eberhard Schockenhoff, Wolfgang Wodarg, Eduard Verhagen, Ludwig A.     Abstract: On 10 and 11 May 2006 the international conference on the theme “River, landscape and land conservation. Overcoming emergencies and grasping opportunities” was held in the main lecture hall of Florence University. The initiative was promoted and organised by the PhD course in Landscape Design – Professor Giulio G. Rizzo, Dr. Michele Ercolini – and by the Master degree course in Landscaping – Professor Guido Ferrara – of the University of Florence.     Abstract: The study of prejudice and racism is one of the oldest interests of social psychology and continues as a major area of interest in the social sciences, in general. Early approaches to the study of prejudice and racism focused on intra-individual processes and personality defects, motivational aspects of inter-ethnic conflict, and the content and application of racial prejudice. With the advent of the cognitive approach to scholarship in social behavior, the focus was on the cognitive processes that promote, maintain, and transmit prejudice and how discrimination was best detected and controlled. Currently, there has been renewed interest in the motivational aspects of prejudice and racism. The present state of understanding stereotyping and prejudice stems from basic motives (i.e. belonging, understanding, controlling, etc.) and that new approaches to the understanding of prejudice and racism must include the study of a combination of cognitive and motivational aspects.

    Abstract: Städte haben ihren individuellen Sound - einen Klang, der sich auch musikalisch darstellt. Dazu gehört - aber nicht nur - die Umsetzung von industriellem Krach in futuristische »rumori« oder konkreten »bruit«. Städte sind Zentren der Kommunikation, hochaktive Knotenpunkte globaler Netzwerke. Hier treffen Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten ethnischen, sozialen und kulturellen Hintergründen sowie musikalischen Bedürfnissen und Fähigkeiten aufeinander. Aus dieser Konfrontation entstehen Musiken, in denen sich ihr Anderssein und ihre Identität manifestieren, in denen sich aber auch Spuren der Anpassung und Integration finden - und die fast immer populäre Musikformen annehmen. Denn die Stadt als Handelsplatz macht zur Ware, was zuvor als Volksmusik mündlich tradiert wurde oder als Kunst gemeint war. Die Stadt ermöglicht unendlich viele Chancen der Kommunikation, die doch nie ausreichend zu sein scheinen

    Abstract: Wie kann etwas Einzigartiges formuliert werden? »Rücksicht auf Darstellbarkeit« nennt Sigmund Freud ein Arbeitsprinzip unserer Psyche. Es verwandelt einen unbewussten Gedanken in sinnliche Bilder, wie sie uns im Traum erscheinen. Diese »Rücksichtnahme« bedeutet zugleich eine Entstellung, ja Zensur des unbewussten Gedanken. Doch ist diese Art von Übersetzung der einzige Weg zum nicht anders Sagbaren und Fassbaren. Literatur, bildende Kunst, ja Kommunikationsmedien überhaupt kommen nicht ohne dieses Prinzip aus, wenn sie etwas von dem darstellen wollen, was uns bewegt.     Abstract: Rap, techno, électro, house, jungle, trip hop... ces styles musicaux se sont installés dans le paysage discographique français depuis la fin des années 1990. À travers les succès commerciaux retentissants ou les coups d’éclat de leurs animateurs, ils sont apparus comme des fenêtres ouvertes sur les plaisirs, les désirs et les maux de la jeunesse. « Jeunes », les musiques rap et électroniques le sont en effet à double titre : filles d’esthétiques postmodernes et de bricolages technologiques dernier cri, elles sont aussi sociologiquement attachées à l’adolescence et à l’entrée dans la vie adulte. En montrant ces « nouveaux »musiciens au travail, l’auteur entraîne le lecteur loin des clichés réducteurs associant ces cultures musicales à une « perte de repères » ou à une mauvaise humeur à la mode. L’articulation entre création artistique et critique sociale, l’invention et la diffusion de modèles d’organisation alternatifs en matière de production discographique sont mises au jour. Dans cet univers professionnel très actuel, la banalisation des « home-studios » et l’extension des responsabilités de l’artiste permettent en effet aux individus de faire carrière en multipliant les projets (de disques et de labels) et les casquettes (de musicien et de manager). Peinture vivante des relations de travail et au travail dans un milieu artistique fondé sur la mobilité, cet ouvrage permet enfin de comprendre les évolutions récentes du monde du disque vers une réactivité et une souplesse toujours plus grandes.
