    Abstract: Anthony Keddie investigates the changing dynamics of class and power at a critical place and time in the history of Judaism and Christianity - Palestine during its earliest phases of incorporation into the Roman Empire (63 BCE-70 CE). He identifies institutions pertaining to civic administration, taxation, agricultural tenancy, and the Jerusalem Temple as sources of an unequal distribution of economic, political, and ideological power. Through careful analysis of a wide range of literary, documentary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence, including the most recent discoveries, Keddie complicates conventional understandings of class relations as either antagonistic or harmonious. He demonstrates how elites facilitated institutional changes that repositioned non-elites within new, and sometimes more precarious, relations with privileged classes, but did not typically worsen their economic conditions. These socioeconomic shifts did, however, instigate changing class dispositions. Judaean elites and non-elites increasingly distinguished themselves from the other, through material culture such as tableware, clothing, and tombs.

    Abstract: Die Geschichte der römischen Republik war eine militärische Erfolgsgeschichte. Texte, Monumente und Rituale erinnerten an die Siege Roms, und diese Betonung der eigenen Triumphe bildete eine Grundlage des Führungsanspruchs der römischen Nobilität. Allerdings erlitten die Römer in der Zeit der Republik auch zahlreiche schwere Niederlagen. Die Studie untersucht erstmals umfassend, wie Roms Niederlagen gegen Kelten, Samniten und Karthager in der Geschichtskultur der Republik und frühen Kaiserzeit erklärt und gedeutet wurden. Die Autorinnen und Autoren zeigen in ihren Beiträgen die nachweisbaren sozialen Konsequenzen eines guten oder schlechten Rufes auf und stellen verschiedene Moraldiskurse vor: von Majestätsprozessen und aristokratischer Moral in der frühen Kaiserzeit über Freizeitbeschäftigungen als Spiegel moralischen Wandels im spätklassischen Athen bis hin zu Klatsch, Gerüchten und fama als moralischem Kapital im spätrepublikanischen und frühkaiserzeitlichen Rom.

    Abstract: Can art and creativity become a means of revealing contradictions in the city system and develop their own forms of future perspectives? From a perspective encompassing critical geographical urban research, Christine Scherzinger investigates visions of a future urbanity. In case studies focussing in detail on Berlin, she analyses artistic attitudes in a reflexive trans-disciplinary process, and tests the limits of the potential to enact change for performative arts, interventions, and illustrations. The study allows visual spaces and spaces of possibility to emerge that provide momentum for an alternative kind of urban design, putting people back in the centre. Können Kunst und Kreativität zu einem Mittel werden, um Widersprüche im System Stadt aufzudecken und eigene Formen der Zukunftsbetrachtungen zu entwickeln Christine Scherzinger fragt aus Sicht einer kritischen geographischen Stadtforschung nach Visionen einer zukünftigen Urbanität. In detaillierten, auf Berlin bezogenen Fallstudien analysiert sie künstlerische Positionen in einem reflexiven, transdisziplinären Prozess und lotet die Grenzen der Veränderbarkeit zwischen performativen Künsten, Interventionen und Zeichnungen aus. Die Studie lässt Bild- und Möglichkeitsräume entstehen, die Impulse für eine andere Stadtgestaltung geben und den Menschen wieder in den Fokus rücken.

    Abstract: Combining historical, historiographical, museological, and touristic analysis, this study investigates how late medieval and early modern women of the Low Countries expressed themselves through texts, art, architecture and material objects, how they were represented by contemporaries, and how they have been interpreted in modern academic and popular contexts. Broomhall and Spinks analyse late medieval and early modern women's opportunities to narrate their experiences and ideas, as well as the processes that have shaped their representation in the heritage and cultural tourism of the Netherlands and Belgium today. The authors study female-authored objects such as familial and political letters, dolls' houses, account books; visual sources, funeral monuments, and buildings commissioned by female patrons; and further artworks as well as heritage sites, streetscapes, souvenirs and clothing with gendered historical resonances. Employing an innovative range of materials from written sources to artworks, material objects, heritage sites and urban precincts, the authors argue that interpretations of late medieval and early modern women's experiences by historians and art scholars interact with presentations by cultural and heritage tourism providers in significant ways that deserve closer interrogation by feminist researchers.

    Abstract: It is estimated that only a small fraction, less than 1 per cent, of ancient literature has survived to the present day. The role of Christian authorities in the active suppression and destruction of books in Late Antiquity has received surprisingly little sustained consideration by academics. In an approach that presents evidence for the role played by Christian institutions, writers and saints, this book analyses a broad range of literary and legal sources, some of which have hitherto been little studied. Paying special attention to the problem of which genres and book types were likely to be targeted, the author argues that in addition to heretical, magical, astrological and anti-Christian books, other less obviously subversive categories of literature were also vulnerable to destruction, censorship or suppression through prohibition of the copying of manuscripts. These include texts from materialistic philosophical traditions, texts which were to become the basis for modern philosophy and science. This book examines how Christian authorities, theologians and ideologues suppressed ancient texts and associated ideas at a time of fundamental transformation in the late classical world.

    Abstract: "Many of the wars of the late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied. Carsten Hjort Lange provides the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as 'normal' reflects the way civil war permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic"...

    Abstract: "East and West in the Roman Empire of the Fourth Century examines the (dis)unity of the Roman Empire in the fourth century from different angles, in order to offer a broad perspective on the topic and avoid an overvaluation of the political division of the empire in 395. After a methodological key-paper on the concepts of unity, the other contributors elaborate on these notions from various geo-political perspectives: the role of the army and taxation, geographical perspectives, the unity of the Church and the perception of the Divisio Regni of 364. Four case-studies follow, illuminating the role of concordia apostolorum, antique sports, eunuchs and the poet Prudentius on the late antique view of the Empire. Despite developments to the contrary, it appears that the Roman Empire remained (to be viewed as) a unity in all strata of society.     Abstract: Texts written in Latin, Greek and other languages provide ancient historians with their primary evidence, but the role of language as a source for understanding the ancient world is often overlooked. Language played a key role in state-formation and the spread of Christianity, the construction of ethnicity, and negotiating positions of social status and group membership. Language could reinforce social norms and shed light on taboos. This book presents an accessible account of ways in which linguistic evidence can illuminate topics such as imperialism, ethnicity, social mobility, religion, gender and sexuality in the ancient world, without assuming the reader has any knowledge of Greek or Latin, or of linguistic jargon. It describes the rise of Greek and Latin at the expense of other languages spoken around the Mediterranean and details the social meanings of different styles, and the attitudes of ancient speakers towards linguistic differences

    Abstract: This book examines the appetite for Egyptian and Egyptian-looking artwork in Italy during the century following Rome's annexation of Aegyptus as a province. In the early imperial period, Roman interest in Egyptian culture was widespread, as evidenced by works ranging from the monumental obelisks, brought to the capital over the Mediterranean Sea by the emperors, to locally made emulations of Egyptian artifacts found in private homes and in temples to Egyptian gods. Although the foreign appearance of these artworks was central to their appeal, this book situates them within their social, political, and artistic contexts in Roman Italy. Swetnam-Burland focuses on what these works meant to their owners and their viewers in their new settings, by exploring evidence for the artists who produced them and by examining their relationship to the contemporary literature that informed Roman perceptions of Egyptian history, customs, and myths

    Note: Main description: "Lebende Bilder", auch unter der französischen Bezeichnung "tableaux vivants" bekannt, sind ein verbreitetes Phänomen der italienischen Festkultur des 15. Jahrhunderts. Anders als die nach Kunstwerken gestellten "lebenden Bilde" des 18./19. Jahrhunderts waren sie meist für den Anlass erfundene Darstellungen, die künstlerische Bildformulare und Gestaltungsprinzipien aufgegriffen und elaborierten. In Italien wurden sie auf einem Wagen oder Traggerüst in Prozessionen und Festzügen mitgeführt, gelegentlich belebten sie auch anstelle von Statuen Triumpharchitekturen oder waren als "Paradiese" fest an einem hochgelegenen Ort eingerichtet. Die Inszenierung von "lebenden Bildern" findet sich in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen und konnte sowohl religiöser und politischer Agitation wie der Repräsentation von Personen und kommunalen Vereinigungen dienen. In dem Buch werden die "lebenden Bilder" auf ihre Erscheinungsformen, Funktionen, die zeitgenössische Rezeption und ihr Verhältnis zu den Bildenden Künsten untersucht. Da nur sehr wenige bildliche Dokumente überliefert sind, stützt sich die Analyse im wesentlichen auf die Auswertung bisher unbeachteter schriftlicher Quellen. Die Besonderheit des "lebenden Bildes" in der visuellen Kultur des Quattrocento liegt darin, dass es, zwar von kurzer Dauer, jeweils an ein spezifisches, historisch bedeutungsvolles oder den jährlichen Zyklus prägendes Ereignis gebunden auftrat. Und sich so in das kollektive Gedächtnis einschrieb. Als ein Massenmedium trug es zur Tradierung, Popularisierung und Etablierung bestimmter Bildthemen oder Inhalte bei. Damit ist es, wie die Verbreitung von Buchdruck und Holzschnitt, ein Faktor des medialen Umbruchs im 15. Jahrhundert

    Abstract: Seit den Tagen des ersten Prinzeps Augustus standen permanent ca. 450.000 Mann unter Roms Fahnen. Als gut ausgebildete Berufssoldaten stellten sie ihre Fähigkeiten im Rahmen der Expansion des Imperium Romanum wie in Zeiten innerer und äußerer Bedrohungen unter Beweis. Rom dankte seinen Soldaten ihr Eintreten nicht nur mit regelmäßigen Soldzahlungen und Vorrechten, sondern auch mit einer für antike Verhältnisse recht weitgehenden Fürsorge für den einzelnen. Sie erstreckte sich auch auf den Ruhestand des Soldaten. Materielle Abfindungen und Privilegien halfen den Betreffenden beim Start ins bürgerliche Leben. Der Preis, den die Soldaten dafür zu zahlen hatten, waren lange Dienstzeiten, körperliche Strapazen und die Unterwerfung unter die militärische Disziplin und die Hierarchie des Heeres. Konnte oder wollte ein Soldat diesen Anforderungen nicht gerecht werden, drohten ihm schwere Strafen bzw. der Ausschluß aus dem Militärdienst.

    Abstract: Discussion of the commercial treaties between Rome and Carthage includes examination of the evidence of Carthaginian trade-goods brought to Rome and of the probable residence of N. Africans in the city for purposes of trade conducted under terms of the treaties and under supervision of Roman aediles. Roman cultural borrowings from Carthaginians are treated. Roman awareness and adoption of Punic religious beliefs and practices during the first two wars between Carthage and Rome are argued. Roman attitudes to foreign gods are discussed. Through re-examination of the evidence of two Roman neighborhoods we learn about Vicus Sobrius and its cult of Mercurius Sobrius and Vicus Africus, two quarters of Rome which Carthaginians frequented and in one case had their market. Punic influence on Roman culture, especially in the realm of religion and agronomy. The sources of Roman acquaintance with Carthaginian commercial, agricultural and religious practices are rehabilitated. How Romans masked their cultural debt to Carthaginians is discussed.

    Abstract: This book – the only history of friendship in classical antiquity that exists in English – examines the nature of friendship in Greece and Rome from Homer to the Christian Roman Empire of the fourth century AD. Friendship is conceived of as a voluntary and loving relationship, but there are major shifts in emphasis from the bonding among warriors in epic poetry, to the egalitarian ties characteristic of the Athenian democracy, the status-conscious connections in Rome and the Hellenistic kingdoms, and the commitment to a universal love among Christian writers. Friendship is also examined in relation to erotic love and comradeship, for its role in politics and economic life, in philosophical and religious communities, in connection with patronage and the private counsellors of kings, and in respect to women. Its relation to modern friendship is also fully discussed
