    Abstract: Im Unterschied zu Menschen der asiatischen Schwellenländer betrachten Politiker, Universitätslehrer und Geschäftsleute aus afrikanischen Ländern die Globalisierung eher mit Furcht: Können hochgradig hilfeabhängig gewordene Volkswirtschaften hoffen, nicht nur die Risiken der Globalisierung erleiden zu müssen, sondern auch von ihren Chancen profitieren zu können? Das Buch versucht, auf diese Schicksalsfrage Afrikas eine differenzierte Antwort zu geben. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass Afrika zwar weitgehend als bisheriger Verlierer der Globalisierung bezeichnet werden muss, dass jedoch vielerlei Formen der Anpassung und aktiven Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen entwickelt wurden. Die Globalisierung erscheint zwar als "Falle" : sie ist von Afrikanern nicht ersehnt worden, aber auch aus Fallen gibt es Auswege, und Modernisierung wird keineswegs abgelehnt. Afrika gibt es nur im Plural, und der weit verbreitete Afropessimismus tut den Afrikanerinnen und Afrikanern Unrecht, die unter schwierigsten materiellen Bedingungen für Demokratie und Menschenrechte und gegen Korruption und Selbstzerstörung eintreten.

Wird so nicht eine genuine Privatangelegenheit, unsere Ernährungsgewohnheiten, ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit gezerrt und damit vielleicht sogar zur Stigmatisierung übergewichtiger Menschen beigetragen? Wenn unsere Ernährungsweise begründet als Teil des Privaten verstanden werden kann, was bedeutet das wiederum für die Politik? Welche Maßnahmen erscheinen dann eher problematisch und welche geboten? Mit diesen Fragen befasst sich Felissa Mühlich.

    Abstract: The movies and the masses erupted on the world stage together. In a few decades around the turn of the twentieth century, millions of persons who rarely could afford a night at the theater and had never voted in an election became regular paying customers at movie palaces and proud members of new political parties. The question of how to represent these new masses fascinated and plagued politicians and filmmakers alike. Michael Tratner examines the representations of masses?the crowd scenes?in Hollywood films from The Birth of a Nation through such popular love stories as Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, and Dr. Zhivago. He then contrasts these with similar scenes in early Soviet and Nazi films. What emerges is a political debate being carried out in filmic style. In both sets of films, the crowd is represented as a seething cauldron of emotions

    Abstract: Judith Kapferer and her collaborators present an insightful volume that interrogates relations between the state and the arts in diverse national and cultural settings.     Abstract: This collection offers a global perspective on the changing character of cities and the increasing importance that consumer culture plays in defining their symbolic economies. Increasingly, forms of spectacle have come to shape how cities are imagined and to influence their character and the practices through which we know them - from advertising and the selling of real estate, to youth cultural consumption practices and forms of entrepreneurship, to the regeneration of urban areas under the guise of the heritage industry and the development of a WiFi landscape. Using examples of cities such as New York, Sydney, Atlantic City, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Douala, Liverpool, San Juan, Berlin and Harbin this book illustrates how image and practice have become entangled in the performance of the symbolic economy. It also argues that it is not just how the urban present is being shaped in this way that is significant to the development of cities but also that a prominent feature of their development has been the spectacular imagining of the past as heritage and through regeneration. Yet the ghosts that this conjures up in practice offer us a possible form of political unsettlement and alternative ways of viewing cities that is only just beginning to be explored. Through this important collection by some of the leading analysts of consumption, cities and space Consuming the Entrepreneurial City offers a cutting edge analysis of the ways in which cities are developing and the implications this has for their future. Das herkömmliche Vorurteil von der ausschließlichen Feindschaft des Islams gegenüber der pharaonischen Kultur ist nicht zu bestätigen. Zwar finden sich im dörflich geprägten Sa al-Hagar auf Grund eines weit zurückreichenden Kontakts mit Reisenden und Equipen westlicher Archäologen deutliche Spuren fundamentalistischer Zurückweisung, doch im städtischen Fuwa zeigt sich, dass selbst in den Moscheen ein durchaus toleranter und kulturell gesteigerter Umgang mit eingebauten alten Säulen und Steinen, pharaonischen Spolien, möglich ist. In einer von der Nähe zum Nil geprägten Landschaft werden neue Züge des lebendigen Ringens um eine moderne islamische Lokalkultur umrissen. Ein zweiter Teil des Bandes präsentiert Silvia Prells ergänzende und vertiefende ägyptologische Studien zur Geschichte der Nilverehrung sowie zur Ausgrabungsgeschichte in Sa al-Hagar (Sais) und dokumentiert die in den Moscheebauten um Fuwa gefundenen Spolien.     Abstract: "Dreamtime superhighway presents a thorough and original contextualization of the rock art and archaeology of the Sydney Basin. By combining excavation results with rock art analysis it demonstrates that a true archaeology of rock art can provide insights into rock art image-making in people's social and cultural lives. McDonald has developed a model that suggests that visual culture - such as rock art-making and its images and forms - could be understood as a system of communication, as a way of signaling group identifying behaviour."--Provided by publisher.
