    Abstract: Social Geographies, as spatial location, is a factor relevant to understanding the variety of peoples interpretations and appropriations of educational innovations and changes. Their location in the social space also influences their response to change. In the field of educational change, social space means for example, skin colour, gender distribution of teachers in one school, childrens self-cultural representations or parents religious attitudes.     Abstract: Worin besteht die 'unbedingte Gastfreundschaft'? Lässt sie sich lediglich als philosophisches Konstrukt denken oder beschreibt sie eine interkulturelle Praxis? Mona Motakef untersucht am Beispiel des deutsch-südafrikanischen Bildungsnetzwerkes Inservice Education for Teachers of Disadvantaged Learner and Communities (INSET 4 TODLAC) Prozesse und Diskurse, in denen sich Beschreibungen des Eigenen und Fremden finden. Wie gestalten sich die Begegnungen? Gab es Konstellationen 'unbedingter Gastfreundschaft?' Was implizierte der Gastfreundschaftspakt? Der französische Philosoph Jacques Derrida unterscheidet zwei Formen von Gastfreundschaft: Die bedingte Gastfreundschaft, der Gastfreundschaftspakt, hat rechtliche und politische Dimensionen. Die unbedingte Gastfreundschaft bedeutet einen Bruch mit dem Pakt, sie bildet eine ethische Beziehung mit dem 'absolut Anderen'. Im Gegensatz zum Gastfreundschaftspakt mit dem Fremden fordert die Begegnung mit dem 'absolut Anderen' die totale Öffnung, welche sich der Klassifizierung und Assimilierung enthält. Wie gingen die Lehrkräfte, die von Berufswegen immer weiter wissen müssen, mit Unsicherheit, Dissens und Unstetigkeit um? Führten ambivalente Situationen zu einem veränderten Umgang mit dem Anderen? Wird der Andere in das eigene Denken übersetzt und somit assimiliert? Oder führen die Begegnungen zu Ambiguitätstoleranz, zur Kompetenz, Unsicherheiten auszuhalten? 〈dt.〉

    Abstract: This book contains contributions about the past, present and future of e-learning in twelve European countries.     Abstract: This study features a collection of eight case studies of exemplary cases from secondary schools as well as international literature reviews and policy analysis related to formative assessment – the frequent assessments of student progress to identify learning needs and shape teaching. It examines such issues as benefits and barriers for using formative assessment, policy frameworks and implications, and formative assessment in practice. Achievement gains attributed to formative assessment are reported as being quite high, but it is not yet practiced systematically. This book makes the case for use of formative assessment and shows how it can be put into practice.

    Abstract: Following the burst of the dot-com bubble in 2000, scepticism about e-learning replaced over-enthusiasm. Rhetoric aside, where do we stand? Why and how do different kinds of tertiary education institutions engage in e-learning? What do institutions perceive to be the pedagogic impact of e-learning in its different forms? How do institutions understand the costs of e-learning? How might e-learning impact staffing and staff development? This book addresses these and many other questions. The study is based on a qualitative survey of practices and strategies carried out by the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) at 19 tertiary education institutions from 11 OECD member countries – Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States – and 2 non-member countries – Brazil and Thailand. This qualitative survey is complemented by the findings of a quantitative survey of e-learning in tertiary education carried out in 2004 by the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education (OBHE) in some Commonwealth countries.

    Abstract: This publication provides policy guidance in an area that has been given little policy priority until recent years. It brings together key lessons from 17 OECD countries, providing evidence on the strategies in place to improve adults’ participation in learning. It addresses potential barriers to learning as well as the policies to remedy them. Among these are policies for increasing and promoting the benefits of adult learning to make them transparent and easily recognised. Other policy levers include economic incentives and co-financing mechanisms that can raise the efficiency of adult learning provision, while delivering quality learning that is adapted to adults’ needs. Finally, policy making can be improved via co-ordination and coherence in a field that is characterised by a wide variety of stakeholders, including ministries of education and ministries of labour.

Framings provided by theories of language-in-use, literacy practices, and discourse extend the concept, bringing to light issues around conflict, power, and the significance of the broader social context which have been overlooked.     Abstract: This OECD Review of the Danish university system examines such aspects as governance, funding, the Research Council System, the Danish knowledge system, the university system itself, universities' interaction with society, and outcomes. It finds that training and research is of high quality, but that the system needs to change in response to rapidly changing demands. A number of recommendations are put forward, particularly in the area of university governance and steering of the system by the government.

    Abstract: Identität als inflationärer Begriff wird in einer nahezu unüberschaubaren Vielfalt von Zusammenhängen, Bedeutungen und Fachdisziplinen verwendet. Um sich die Bedeutung und die theoretischen Wurzeln solch vielschichtiger Begriffe zu vergegenwärtigen, ist das Studium der Klassiker der entsprechenden Gebiete unabdingbar. Als Klassiker der Identitätstheorie aus einer sozialpsychologischen Perspektive kann Erik H. Erikson (1902-1994) gelten. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt eine Rekonstruktion der Theorie von Erikson dar. Zum einen, indem die Konzepte und Begriffe aus seinem Werk herausgearbeitet und zu einer kohärenten Darstellung integriert werden, und zum anderen, indem seine Theorie der Identität in den Gesamtumfang des Erikson'schen Werkes eingebettet wird. Dazu werden die Werke neu und systematisch gelesen und die ursprünglichen Forschungsfragen und die Antworten darauf detailgenau rekonstruiert.

    Abstract: Regardless of its validity, many adults share a belief that today's youth face an inauspicious future. Drugs, sex, violence, disintegration of the nuclear family, technology that replaces interpersonal relationships - that's what you hear in the news. The media, through its dramatization of the dangers and risks children confront and pose, have created a well-established image of disenfranchised, hostile, and often-destructive children and adolescents. This image ignores the many children who are thriving as well as the possibility of positive outcomes for children and youth. With children comprising roughly 30% of the global population - almost 2 billion children worldwide - understanding exactly what leads children to grow into confident, caring, responsible adults is an issue that belongs at the forefront of every nation's agenda. Increasingly, it is understood that we need not only to prevent negative outcomes but to promote positive outcomes. What Do Children Need to Flourish? Conceptualizing and Measuring Indicators of Positive Development, part of the Search Series on Developmentally Attentive Community and Society, focuses on how scholars and practitioners can begin to build rigorous measures of the healthy behaviors and attitudes that result in positive outcomes for children and youth.     Abstract: The neo-Vygotskian approach to child development is introduced to English-speaking readers. Russian followers of Vygotsky have elaborated his ideas into a theory that integrates cognitive, motivational, and social aspects of child development with an emphasis on the role of children's activity as mediated by adults in their development. This theory has become the basis for an innovative analysis of periods in child development and of the mechanism of children's transitions from one period to the next. In this book, the discussion of the neo-Vygotskians' approach to child development is supported by a review of their empirical data, much of which has never before been available to English-speaking readers. The discussion is also supported by a review of recent empirical findings of Western researchers, which are highly consistent with the neo-Vygotskian analysis of child development.

    Abstract: This volume attempts to delineate the roots of a self-conscious field of educational change that grew up in – and grew out of – the turbulent political, social, economic and cultural life of the post-World War II years.
