    Abstract: Ob der Dialog der Kulturen, der Wissenschaften, der Religionen oder der Nationen – an jeder Grenzstelle wird der Dialog gefordert und als der Schlüssel zur erfolgreichen Kommunikation gehandelt. Die fast formelhafte Forderung legt nahe, dass es sich beim Dialog um ein nach festen Regeln ablaufendes Verfahren handelt, das zielgerichtet und beinahe effizient handfeste Ergebnisse liefert, wenn es nicht den Konsens schon von vorneherein als Endprodukt stillschweigend voraussetzt.Ziel des Projekts „Wertewelten“ ist es, verschiedene in ihrer charakteristischen Denkweise begründete Wertesysteme einander gegenüberzustellen und ihre Spezifika zu erkunden. Anstelle eines abstrakten Dialogmodells, das auf die Etablierung globaler Standards abzielt, liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der sprachlichen Vermittlung und Konstitution von Werten. Das Forschungsprojekt wird vom Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg gefördert

    Abstract: This study in cross-linguistic semantics deploys the framework of bi-directional Optimality Theory to develop a typology of the relationship between syntax and semantics in negation markers and negation indefinites.
    Abstract: This study in cross-linguistic semantics explores the territory where logic, natural language and typology meet. While we can all understand the semantics of negation in its role of altering truth values, this ambitious book aims to take the reader much further. A unified analysis of the linguistic 'behavior' of negation is hampered by the myriad variations in its syntax and semantics in languages around the world. This is true not just for the expression of negatives, but for their interpretation too. De Swart deploys the framework of bi-directional Optimality Theory to develop a typology of the relationship between syntax and semantics in negation markers and negative indefinites. In this model, syntactic and semantic constraints act in concert to define the grammar of a language. Some languages are 'double negative', some 'negative concord', and others belong to subclasses identified by 'strict negative concord' 'nonstrict negative concord' or 'negative spread'. In addition to the above, the author analyses intermediate cases, and examines complex instances of double negation occurring in negative concord languages. Her OT analysis of the Jespersen cycle brings together typological and diachronic variation. This book's unique combination of theoretical precision and wide empirical coverage make it essential reading for any researcher approaching semantic typology from a logical, linguistic or cognitive perspective.

    Abstract: "This monograph probes the structure of the verb phrase through a cross-linguistic investigation of the syntax and morphology of relevant constructions. In particular, the author provides evidence for two event-related non-lexical projections called ""inner aspect"" and ""event"". The former is found within the verb phrase and encodes information on the endpoint of an event. The latter is found at the edge of the verb phrase and demarcates the boundary of a particular domain of syntax, L-syntax. Although languages vary in their use of these projections and in the way they encode the endpoints of events, the author argues that the comparison of a number of languages and the analysis of a range of constructions results in the emergence of a consistent picture. While much of the discussion involves Austronesian languages such as Malagasy and Tagalog, other languages such as French, Spanish, Swedish, Scots Gaelic, Chinese, Japanese, Navajo, Slave, and Kalagan are discussed. Syntactic and morphological data from these languages are used to illuminate the details of the phrase structure of the verbal predicate. These data also aid in understanding how phrase structure is used to express certain facets of language, such as event structure, aspectual verb classes, productive and lexical causatives, derived objects, agents and causes, and coerced structures."

Hier schafft dieses erste alphabetische Verzeichnis akkadischer Logogramme Abhilfe: es bietet die akkadischen Lesungen der meisten Logogramme, so daß der zeitraubende Umweg über die Indices der Zeichenlisten meistens entfallen kann. Die ca. 5000 Einträge enthalten auch die Grundbedeutung des akkadischen Wortes sowie Verweise auf die Zeichenlisten (Borger, Mesopotamisches Zeichenlexikon oder Labat, Manuel d’épigraphie akkadienne) oder auch direkt auf die akkadischen Wörterbücher. Dadurch wird sowohl der epigraphische als auch der lexikalische Zugang zum Text erleichtert. Das Buch ist vor allem als Hilfsmittel für Studierende gedacht, die ein inhaltliches Interesse an der akkadischen Literatur haben, jedoch nicht über Kenntnisse der Keilschrift oder des Sumerischen verfügen.     Abstract: Reading transliterated akkadian texts sometimes is rather difficult, if the akkadian equivalents of the logograms are not given. This first alphabetic index of akkadian logograms offers help now: it contains the akkadian readings of most logograms, so the time consuming detour through the indexes of sign lists can be avoided in most cases. The circa 5000 entries also record the principal meaning of the akkadian word as well as references to sign lists (Borger, Mesopotamisches Zeichenlexikon or Labat, Manuel d’épigraphie akkadienne) or to akkadian dictionaries. In this way the epigraphic as well as the lexical approach to the text is enhanced. The book (written in German) is designed for students who are interested in akkadian literature, but cannot read cuneiform writing or Sumerian. The 2nd edition was thoroughly revised. In particular, R. Borger’s Mesopotamisches Zeichenlexikon is now quoted as the standard sign list for Akkadian

    Abstract: Social Learning Systems and Communities of Practice is a collection of classical and contemporary writing associated with learning and systemic change in contexts ranging from cities, to rural development to education to nursing to water management to public policy. It is likely to be of interest to anyone trying to understand how to think systemically and to act and interact effectively in situations experienced as complex, messy and changing. While mainly concerned with professional praxis, where theory and practice inform each other, there is much here that can apply at a personal level. This book offers conceptual tools and suggestions for new ways of being and acting in the world in relation to each other, that arise from both old and new understandings of communities, learning and systems. Starting with twentieth century insights into social learning, learning systems and appreciative systems from Donald Schön and Sir Geoffrey Vickers, the book goes on to consider the contemporary traditions of critical social learning systems and communities of practice, pioneered by Richard Bawden and Etienne Wenger and their colleagues. A synthesis of the ideas raised, written by the editor, concludes this reader. The theory and practice of social learning systems and communities of practice appear to have much to offer in influencing and managing systemic change for a better world. Chris Blackmore is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental and Development Systems at the Open University. She develops open learning courses in systems and in environmental decision making at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her main research area, in which she has a range of publications, is in learning systems and communities of practice for environmental decision making, including issues of social learning, systems thinking, systemic change, sustainability and responsibility.

    Abstract: This original research applies semiotics to linguistic and non-linguistic segments in a text in search of potential correlations between them. The resultant mapping is applied to cases of gesture-word mismatches that are evident in conflict situations. The current study adopts the word systems approach, a sign-based theory that is naturally designed for the analysis of linguistic signs, and extends it to non-linguistic units, borrowing analytical tools from the field of dance movement therapy. The variety of interdisciplinary metaphorical and literal interpretations of the analyzed signs enriches the theoretical framework and facilitates examination of the instances of mismatches. Hence, this study makes a meaningful contribution to the understanding of linguistic/non-linguistic mismatches in situations of conflict. Further, it makes more general claims: the semiotic system underlying this study paves the way for further research of correlations (or lack thereof) between a range of phenomena cutting across sociology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and political science.

    Abstract: Inhaltsangabe: Im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit stehen deutsche und polnische feministische Linguistinnen. Die Arbeit besteht aus 5 Kapiteln: die ersten vier bilden den theoretischen Teil, im fünften Kapitel wird die Analyse der Personenbezeichnungen in ausgewählten rechtlichen Texten durchgeführt. Im 1. Kapitel wird die Entstehung und Entwicklung der feministischen Linguistik in Deutschland besprochen. Es wird also die Geschichte der Frauenbewegung seit den 70er Jahren bis in die Gegenwart dargestellt sowie die damit zusammenhängenden Untersuchungsgebiete: sprachliche Ungleichbehandlung und Sprachverhalten von Frauen und Männer. Außerdem werden hier die Ansätze der feministischen Sprachkritik in Polen berücksichtigt. Die Darstellung der Bereiche sprachlicher Diskriminierung von Frauen im Deutschen und Polnischen widmet sich das Kapitel 2. Diese Bereiche werden nach Thesen der feministischen Linguistinnen besprochen und sie betreffen Grammatik, Wortbildung und Lexik. Es werden solche Fragen aus der Perspektive der feministischen Linguistik behandelt: Welche Bezeichnungen gibt es für Frauen? Werden Frauen auch genannt, wenn von ihnen die Rede ist oder wenn man über sie spricht? Haben Frauen dieselben Chancen wie Männer, ´gemeint´ zu sein? Gibt es dafür Indizien im System einer Sprache, dass Frauen gemeint oder nicht gemeint sind? Zusammenfassend werden die Bereiche aus kontrastiver Sicht Deutsch-Polnisch analysiert, und zwar mit dem Ziel, Unterschiede und Ähnlichkeiten zu markieren. Zu diesem Kapitel gehört auch ein umfangreicher Exkurs über ?Therapievorschläge? der deutschen feministischen Linguistinnen und über postulierte Veränderungen im Polnischen. Gegenstand des Kapitels 3 ist die Darstellung der Möglichkeiten des deutschen und polnischen Sprachsystems im Bereich der Frauenbezeichnungen. Es wird hier auf Wortbildungsmittel der beiden Sprachen eingegangen, die zur Ableitung von femininen Personenbezeichnungen dienen. Im Kapitel 4 werden Stimmen von deutschen und polnischen Linguisten zu Thesen der feministischen Linguistik präsentiert. Es werden hier vor allem Argumente von Gegnern der feministischen Linguistinnen und auch die Art und Weise, auf die sie an dieses Problem herangehen, dargestellt. Den zweiten Teil dieses Kapitels bilden meine Überlegungen zur feministischen Sprachkritik. Das Ziel des analytischen Kapitels ist es, die Thematisierung der Frauen in ausgewählten juristischen Dokumenten zu untersuchen. Es wird gefragt, welche Bezeichnungen für Frauen benutzt werden, und wie auf Frauen Bezug genommen wird. Hierbei werden juristische Dokumente der Analyse unterzogen, weil feministische Linguistinnen gegenüber der Verwendung der Personenbezeichnungen in der Rechtssprache besondere Bedenken äußern. Der Gegenstand der Analyse bilden deutsche und polnische Listen der staatlich anerkannten (Ausbildungs)berufe und ausgewählte Arbeitsverträge, also Dokumente, in denen ziemlich viele Personenbezeichnungen zum Einsatz kommen.

    Abstract: Spätestens in der Jugend werden gleichaltrige Freundinnen und Freunde (peers) zu wichtigen Interaktionspartnern und Entwicklungshelfern. Und spätestens in der Jugend offenbaren sich Defizite in der Lesekompetenz sowie der Lesemotivation und nachlassenden Leseaktivitäten. Ob peers damit zu tun haben, ist bislang nicht erforscht worden und Gegenstand dieser Studie. Sie begibt sich in gleich dreierlei Hinsicht auf Neuland: Erstens widmet sie sich einer in der Leseforschung vernachlässigten Lesesozialisationsinstanz, zweitens tut sie es im Längsschnitt und drittens bei der ersten Generation, die selbstverständlich mit den sog. Neuen Medien aufwächst. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass peers bedeutsam für die Entwicklung von Lesemotivation und -verhalten zu Beginn der Sekundarstufe sind.

    Abstract: »Hybridität« hat sich zu einem modischen Schlagwort entwickelt. Mit diesem Band erscheint international erstmalig eine umfassende Analyse der Kulturgeschichte dieses Begriffs. Ausgehend von einer Kritik der deutschsprachigen Rezeption arbeitet Kien Nghi Ha aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive die unterschiedlichen historischen Phasen und gesellschaftlichen Kontexte von der europäischen Antike über die koloniale Moderne bis zur Gegenwart auf. Gestützt auf eine breite Materiallage kann er zeigen, dass Hybridität als gesellschaftsdefinierende Frage der sozio-kulturellen Grenzüberschreitung und »Rassenvermischung« stets mit ambivalenten Formen der Rassifizierung, Hierarchisierung und Verwertung verbunden ist.

    Abstract: While cultural diversity and hybridity have often been celebrated, they also challenge traditional concepts of national and cultural identity – challenges which have caused considerable anxiety. Various disciplines have often investigated the impact of cultural hybridity, multiculture, and (post)colonialism in relative isolation and with a tendency towards over-theorization and loss of specificity. Greater interdisciplinary cooperation can counter this tendency and encourage sustained comparisons between different former empires and across language boundaries. This volume contributes to such developments by combining contributions from history, English and German studies, cultural geography, theatre studies, and film studies; by covering both the colonial and the postcolonial period; and by looking comparatively at two different (post)colonial contexts: the United Kingdom and Germany. The result is productive dialogue across the distinct colonial and migration histories of the UK and Germany, which brings out divergent concepts of cultural difference – but, importantly, without neglecting similarities and transnational developments. The interdisciplinary outlook extends beyond political definitions of identity and difference to include consumer culture, literature, film, and journalism – cultural and social practices that construct, represent, and reflect personal and collective identities. Section I discusses the historical and contemporary role of colonial experience and its remembrance in the construction of national identities. Section II follows on by tracing the reflections of (post)coloniality and twentieth-century migration in the specific fields of economic history and consumer culture. Section III centres on recent debates about multiculture and national/cultural identity in politics, literature, and film

    Abstract: In our modern society with its increasing differentiation in culture and media, language and speech are also confronted with new demands and contexts for their use.
