    Abstract: Mit dem Ölpreisschock des Jahres 1973 ging ein Zeitabschnitt zu Ende, der durch Wachstum, Wohlstand und Vollbeschäftigung gekennzeichnet war. Die schwierige, mitunter krisenhafte Wirtschaftslage der 1970er und 1980er Jahre führte zur Rückkehr eines fast schon vergessenen Phänomens: der Massenarbeitslosigkeit. Allein in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland stieg die Zahl der Arbeitslosen zwischen 1973 und 1985 auf 2,3 Millionen. Historiker, Wirtschaftswissenschaftler, Soziologen und Sozialpsychologen analysieren in diesem Band die Ursachen der Arbeitslosigkeit, ihre Erscheinungsformen, ihre Auswirkungen sowie die Gegenmaßnahmen der Politik und ordnen dabei die Entwicklung in der Bundesrepublik in den europäischen Zusammenhang ein. So werden die historischen Voraussetzungen eines Problems deutlich, das bis heute zu den größten innenpolitischen Herausforderungen zählt.

Two decades after Mikhail Gorbachev initiated regime-wrecking radical reforms, Russia has reemerged as a superpower. It has survived a hyperdepression, modernized, restored private property and business, adopted a liberal democratic persona, and asserted claims to global leadership. Many in the West perceive these developments as proof of a better globalized tomorrow, while others foresee a new cold war. Globalizers contend that Russia is speedily democratizing, marketizing, and humanizing, creating a regime based on the rule of law and respect for civil rights. Opponents counterclaim that Russia before and during the Soviet period was similarly misportrayed and insist that Medvedev's Russia is just another variation of an authoritarian 'Muscovite' model that has prevailed for over five centuries. The cases for both positions are explored while chronicling events since 1980

    Abstract: Ständige Lebensmittelskandale haben die deutsche Verbraucherpolitik aus ihrem Tiefschlaf gerissen und zur Formung eines neuen Leitbildes geführt. Nachhaltiger Konsum und ein gesteigertes Verantwortungsbewusstsein waren die Schlagworte der neuen Verbraucherpolitik, die sich zum Leitbild des informierten Verbrauchers verdichten. In politischen Handlungs- und Entscheidungsprozessen haben sich die auf Sicherheit, Gesundheitsverträglichkeit und Wirtschaftlichkeit gerichteten Verbraucherinteressen als vergleichsweise durchsetzungsschwach erwiesen. Sie stehen damit repräsentativ für das politische Schicksal aller Gemeinwohlinteressen, deren Durchsetzungschance paradoxerweise mit dem Grad ihrer Allgemeinheit schwindet. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird in dieser breit angelegten Studie das Leitbild des informierten Verbrauchers, das sich sowohl als Maßstab wie auch als Richtlinie der deutschen Verbraucherpolitik darstellt, am Beispiel des Lebensmittelsektors auf den Prüfstand gestellt.

    Abstract: The book presents an overview of the general aspects of trade uncertainty, a central element in the analysis of economic diplomacy, illustrating that some instruments, such as sanctions (both positive and negative), increase trade uncertainty, whilst others--multilateral trade policy, for instance--aim to reduce this uncertainty. Commercial policy and bilateral economic diplomacy are explored, and economic sanctions analysed. An extensive review of the literature and empirical investigations of 161 sanctions and the commercial relationships of 37 countries provide topical and empirical perspectives on how international diplomacy may both be a cost and a benefit of the key drivers of productivity growth. Finally, policy conclusions are drawn, and a future research agenda presented

    Abstract: Many buying decisions are made at the Point of Sale. This fact underlines the outstanding importance of behaviourism, its methods and its efficiency. Therefore this work deals with the classical as well as with recent research methods into buying habits, etc. Validity aspects receive special attention. To demonstrate how much information can be gathered with relatively little effort an adapted form of research at the POS is described. Also suggestions are given to look into the behaviour of the staff at the POS.
    Abstract: Viele Kaufentscheidungen fallen erst am Point of Sale (POS), zumindest werden viele Absichten dort erst konkretisiert. Dies allein begründet die herausragende Bedeutung der Verhaltensforschung am POS. Bei dieser Forschung bedarf es des Einsatzes geeigneter Forschungsmethoden und der Beachtung ihrer Leistungsfähigkeit. Aus diesem Grunde befasst sich die hier vorgelegte Publikation mit den klassischen, aber auch mit neueren Forschungsmethoden, vor allem mit der Erfassung des Lauf-, Zuwendungs- und Kaufverhaltens und mit der Erfassung kognitiver Prozesse beim Besuch eines stationären Geschäfts. Besondere Beachtung erfahren Validitätsaspekte sowie Selektivitäts- und Reaktivitätseffekte, die über die Aussagekraft der Befunde entscheiden. Um aufzuzeigen, wie mit begrenztem Aufwand möglichst viel in Erfahrung gebracht werden kann, wird eine abgestufte Verhaltensforschung am POS skizziert. Abschließend wird aufgezeigt, wie auch das Verhalten der Mitarbeiter am POS untersucht werden kann.

    Abstract: In recent years, major social forces such as: aging populations, social trends, migration patterns, and the globalization of economies, have reshaped social welfare policies and practices across the globe. Multinational corporations, NGOs, and other international organizations have begun to influence social policy at a national and local level. Among the many ramifications of these changes is that globalizing influences may hinder the ability of individual nation-states to effect policies that are beneficial to them on a local level. With contributions from different countries worldwide, this collected work represents the first major comparative analysis on the effect of globalization on the international welfare state. The Welfare State in Post-Industrial Society is divided into two major sections: the first draws from a number of leading social welfare researchers from diverse countries who point to the nation-state as case studies, highlighting how it goes about establishing and revising social welfare provisions. The second portion of the volume then moves to a more global perspective in its analysis and questioning of the impact of globalisation on citizenship and marketization. A unique aspect of the volume is that all authors participated in an iterative process to identify a series of consensus themes that each author was then asked to integrate into their chapters as they were relevant.

Diese drei Texte sind nicht nur epoche-machende Romane sondern auch "Epochenromane" in dem Sinne, dass sie wesentliche denkgeschichtliche Strömungen ihres Zeitalters aufgreifen und literarisch verarbeiten. Eines der prägnanten Kennzeichen der Epoche dieser Romane ist die später nie mehr erreichte Vielfalt an erkenntnistheoretischen Positionen. Wie sich die drei Autoren in ihrem ästhetischen Werk mit diesem Spektrum auseinandersetzen, wird in der vorliegenden Untersuchung interpretativ nachvollzogen.
    Abstract: Main description: Taking a philosophical epistemological perspective, this work examines Thomas Mann’s 0The Magic Mountain0 (Der Zauberberg), Hermann Broch’s trilogy, 0The Sleepwalkers0 (Die Schlafwandler), and Robert Musil’s 0The Man Without Qualities0 (Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften). These three texts not only constitute epoch-making novels, but are also novels of their epoch, in the sense that they deal with the significant historical currents of thought of their time in a literary manner. One of the most succinct characteristics of their epoch was a diversity of epistemological positions, never to be attained again afterwards. Using an interpretive approach, this study sheds light on how the three authors dealt with this spectrum in their aesthetic works.

In particular, the 2004 flagship report on trade and investment in the MENA region and the 2008 report on education touched upon other fundamental ingredients of economic competitiveness and private sector development. By focusing on market institutions, the quality of implementation of economic policies and the credibility of reforms from the private sector perspective, this report offers a new angle to the growth and employment challenge of the MENA region.

    Abstract: Niedriglohnzuschüssse sollen Arbeitslose zur Aufnahme einer Beschäftigung motivieren. Allerdings enden gerade solche geförderten Beschäftigungsverhältnisse oft schon während der Förderdauer - ein Befund, der gegen die Anreizwirkung eines Lohnzuschusses spricht und damit im Widerspruch zu neoklassischen ökonomischen Theorien steht. Gerhard Krug erklärt dieses "Paradox" damit, dass die so geförderten Beschäftigten den Kombilohn nicht nur als Zuzahlung, sondern auch als ein Signal dafür wahrnehmen, dass ihr Arbeitgeber nicht bereit ist, einen "fairen" Lohn zu zahlen. Für die Ausgestaltung arbeitsmarktpolitischer Maßnahmen bedeutet dies, dass die damit verbundenen Ziele nur zu erreichen sind, wenn neben dem Motiv der finanziellen Nutzenmaximierung auch das subjektiv-normativ orientierte Handeln der Betroffenen in den Blick genommen wird.

    Abstract: Organization design (OD) is a key feature of management theory and practice. It addresses the challenges of constructing and maintaining effective organizations. Essential to its application is the assumption that it can improve organizations and their performance. Faced with the ever-accelerating pace of technological change and the restructuring of markets, many firms have questioned their own organizational structures and processes. Consequently, we have witnessed much organizational experimentation and the development of new forms of organizing over the last decade. How does organization design inform such experimentation? And how can organization design help managers gain insights and advance the current understanding of how organizations can meet environmental challenges and constraints in the future? This book is the third volume to emerge from a series of workshops on organization design, featuring new empirical research and theoretical insights. The chapters are organized around three central themes: (1) Towards New Organizational Forms, (2) Dynamics of Adaption and Change, and (3) Fit and Performance. The chapters cover such timely issues as organizational networks, virtuality, learning, dynamic capabilities, and adaptation. Common to all contributions is a focus on the core theories of OD and emerging perspectives. Collectively, the chapters reflect the state of the art of OD and provide a further step toward the evolution of this important field of research.

    Abstract: This book explores a virtually untapped, yet fascinating research area: television dialogue. It reports on a study comparing the language of the American situation comedy Friends to natural conversation. Transcripts of the television show and the American English conversation portion of the Longman Grammar Corpus provide the data for this corpus-based investigation, which combines Douglas Biber's multidimensional methodology with a frequency-based analysis of close to 100 linguistic features. As a natural offshoot of the research design, this study offers a comprehensive description of the most common linguistic features characterizing natural conversation.     Abstract: Der demographische Wandel und die damit einhergehenden Finanzierungsschwierigkeiten der sozialen Sicherungssysteme haben in den letzten Jahren die Frage nach der Gerechtigkeit zwischen den Generationen in das Zentrum der öffentlichen Diskussion gerückt. Die ausgewogene finanzielle Belastung zwischen jetzt lebenden und künftigen Generationen wie auch die Sorge um die Zukunftschancen unserer Kinder sind dabei die zentralen Grundfragen der Debatte. So sieht sich auch die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung vor die Herausforderung gestellt, klassische Konzepte intragenerationeller Gerechtigkeit daraufhin zu überprüfen, inwiefern sie Forderungen nach intergenerationeller Gerechtigkeit standhalten. Neben den empirischen und philosophischen Grundfragen analysieren die Beiträger dieses Bandes das Thema Generationengerechtigkeit aus einer ordnungsökonomischen Perspektive. Es geht zum einen um eine Begründung dafür, warum überhaupt heutige Gesellschaftsmitglieder die Interessen zukünftiger Generationen berücksichtigen sollen. Zum anderen werden solche gesellschaftlichen Regeln gesucht, die im besten Falle geeignet sind, die Interessen der kommenden Generationen langfristig zu sichern und dabei zugleich für die heute Lebenden akzeptabel sind.     Abstract: Convergence Media History explores the ways that digital convergence has radically changed the field of media history. Writing media history is no longer a matter of charting the historical development of an individual medium such as film or television. Instead, now that various media from blockbuster films to everyday computer use intersect regularly via convergence, scholars must find new ways to write media history across multiple media formats. This collection of eighteen new essays by leading media historians and scholars examines the issues today in writing media history and histories. Each essay addresses a single medium-including film, television, advertising, sound recording, new media, and more-and connects that specific medium's history to larger issues for the field in writing multi-media or convergent histories.
