Abstract: Study dimensions and methodological approach -- Results: Before study -- Results: During the study -- Results: Post-study -- Discussion and Conclusions.
Abstract: How do international students and alumni contribute to development in their countries of origin? Is the development effect larger when students return to their countries of origin directly after completing their studies and become involved locally there, or can they also support the development of their country of origin if they remain abroad after their studies and contribute their knowledge and capital to the development process of their country of origin via transnational networks? This question is examined in the case of the German scholarship program of the Catholic Academic Foreigner Service (KAAD) in five countries of different developing regions: Georgia, Ghana, Indonesia, Colombia and Palestinian territories. The authors Dr. Sascha Krannich is a research associate at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen with a focus on migration, human rights and global health. He is also a member of the Research Group on Migration and Human Rights (FGMM) at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. Dr. Uwe Hunger is Professor of Political Science with a focus on migration at the University of Applied Sciences Fulda and Private Lecturer at the Institute for Political Science at Münster University, Germany. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract: The seduction-theory defines film in a broader sense as a medium of seduction, based on the French concept of séduction. It is a theoretical approach influenced by continental philosophy and classical film theory, linked to a three-stage analytical model. The book introduces the theoretical foundations and, using various classical and contemporary examples from film history, presents a genuine method of film analysis. The Author Prof. Dr. Marcus Stiglegger teaches Film and Image Studies in Muenster and Regensburg. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. Abstract: This book explores the fragile process of city brand development thoughtfully. Backgrounds are explained, experiences recounted, and city branding inspired. The dream of every brand maker: develop a city into a strong brand – perhaps even a myth. Yet, myths' creation is a curiosity. When purposeful, are there specific success recipes, and can those responsible be identified? Can the process be replicated? How do brand makers navigate city and brand complexity practically? How do they offer success prospects to the arduous process of creating a city brand? How do they handle external criticism and self-doubts? City images emerge from complex and random processes. In global urban competition, this process is enriched with brand making achievements. Success isn't guaranteed, depending on discussed conditions. Lastly, rules for effective city branding are outlined. The Authors Eric Häusler is a historian with a keen interest in social science concepts. Currently, he is conducting a habilitation project on urbanization processes in Tokyo, New York, and Zurich in the 1960s. Extended research stays have taken him to Sophia University in Tokyo and presently to The New School and New York University in New York City. His most recent publication is his dissertation titled "Ökonomisches Scheitern. Solidarische Praktiken in Bern 1750-1900" (published by transcript Verlag). Jürgen Häusler is retired. At the beginning of his career, he engaged in social science research and later assumed leadership responsibilities for many years at a globally leading consulting firm specializing in brand development. Additionally, he taught at the University of Leipzig and published on the topic. Both authors share a passion for a multidisciplinary, theory-guided, and practice-oriented exploration of the phenomena of the city and city branding. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract: Introduction -- Understanding Aspirational Talk -- Business Ethics Perspective on Responsibility -- Synthesis: Applying Business Ethics to Aspirational Talk -- Conclusion.
Abstract: Aspirational talk has gained increasing research attention as a compelling concept theoretically explaining the potential of talk-action discrepancies in corporate responsibility communication to instigate organizational change. Under certain conditions, aspirational talk can facilitate discourse, agreement, reframing, and corporate reflexivity. However, perceived talk-action discrepancies can negatively affect organizational members, leading to disengagement, and demotivation, causing emotional exhaustion, exposing employees to vulnerabilities, and even catalyzing unethical or illicit behaviors. Thus, this book focuses on how aspirational talk becomes irresponsible in an organizational context, and how it can be avoided. The author proposes that aspirational talk becomes irresponsible if it creates expectations that lead to illegitimate harm to employees or involved stakeholders. A framework is derived, constituting the finding that it takes two types of investments into performativity and responsibility conditions, to avoid the irresponsible use of aspirational talk – and thus, to inspire responsibly. About the author Marie Schwimmer completed her doctoral study under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Suchanek at the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Chair of Economic and Business Ethics at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and the Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics. Her primary research and practice focus is on corporate responsibility, sustainability communication, and business ethics as well as particularly aspirational talk in organizations.

Abstract: This volume offers a media-theoretically oriented perspective on the Space Race. It analyzes feature films, documentaries, live television coverage, magazines, stamps, posters, ticker-tape parades. They visualized the Space Race in a specific way and circulated it transnationally from 'East' to 'West' and from 'West' to 'East' across the 'Iron Curtain'. It will be shown how reporting on the Space Race between 1955 and 1975 can be explained as a globalizing history of the intertwining of images during the Cold War. Abstract: This book examines the changing significance of intra-European labor mobility in the 21st century. The focus is on the driving forces, the labor market effects and the regulation of this mobility. It is shown that there is a demand for workers with different qualifications in the "post-industrial" societies of Western Europe. This demand is primarily met by migration from the enlarged EU. However, this is no longer traditional labor migration, but the mobility of EU citizens. This brings with it new opportunities, but also challenges in a transnational mobility space, which is also a space of inequality. Abstract: The welcome culture of 2015 in Germany has, not least due to the (re)definition of safe countries of origin, turned into a deportation policy. How can this change in policy be understood and is it also accompanied by a change of attitude among the population? Which reasons for and which reasons against the admission of refugees are cited in social debates? This volume brings together analyses of the social discourse on dealing with refugees, questions of labour market integration and the practice of counselling refugees. Alongside academic analyses are reflective contributions from the practice of migration policy. Abstract: The interconnections of economy, society and politics so obviously determine socio-economic and political structures and problem situations, current ways of thinking and acting as well as the collective perception of solution options that their still low attention in university teaching and school education is surprising. Phenomena such as pandemics, climate change, migration or authoritarianism make the close, complex and contradictory connections between economy, society and politics tangible. Against this background, socioeconomic research, teaching and education are urgently needed. The theme volume aims to contribute to this by presenting research contributions on problem complexes such as economy and democracy, perspectivity and multiperspectivity, situation, interest, and politics, subject and subjectification, and discipline and curriculum. Abstract: Introduction: Technological Competence and Social Change in a Spatial Perspective -- Stratification, Socialisation and Space -- Digital and Digitized Space as an Opportunity for Advancement -- Data-Based Utilisation Contexts -- Decontextualized data and socio-spatial differences -- Recursive Spaces -- Conclusion and Outlook.
Abstract: This open access book critically examines discussions on digitalisation and individual opportunities for socio-economic advancement. Contrary to the prevailing narratives of “digital empowerment” and opportunities for every individual, this book argues that digitalisation massively curtails social advancement opportunities, consolidating existing social relations. From a spatial perspective, Scheffer demonstrates how socially disadvantaged groups are faced with reproducing mechanisms as part of a new data economy. Surprisingly, the more intensively digital services are used, the more this happens. Building on Löw´s sociology of space and Bourdieu´s concept of habitus, this book shows how practices of social exclusion are transferred to the digital present in an innovative way. The image of “mirrored” spaces describes a new mechanism that explains social exclusion in the age of digitalization. This book is an essential resource for researchers and students interested in socio-economic inequalities, processes of digitalisation, and digital geographies.

Abstract: Introduction -- A Theory for German Security Policy -- Case Studies -- Conclusion.
Abstract: German Structural Pacifism examines the influence of Germany’s lessons of the past on its security policy since reunification in an approach that is both novel and timely in the context of the Russia-Ukraine War. Germany’s lessons of the past provide contradictory “right ways” for Germany to overcome its authoritarian past and serve to legitimate political interests in security policy decision-making. Reconciling competing political interests and contradictory narratives results in a security policy that prioritizes “the right way” to do security policy is over its effectiveness. It is the author’s great merit to have defined the past 30 years of German security policy under the term “Structural Pacifism.” I find this conclusive. Sönke Neitzel, Chair of Military History at the University of Potsdam An accurate depiction of Germany’s systemic neglect of its armed forces since reunification, demonstrating why it is no surprise that our armed forces are naked. A follow up including the Zeitenwende would be very interesting. Hans-Peter Barthels, President of the German Society for Security Policy The book succinctly and accurately addresses the lack of an honest debate on the use of military force in the domain of German security policy, and explores its negative impact on military decision-making from political strategy all the way down to the tactical level. Abstract: Introduction -- (European) youth policy and why research it -- Europeanisation and soft law -- EU Youth Strategy and fsQCA -- Case study analysis -- Conclusions.
Abstract: Influence of “hard” law on national policies still is a central topic in Europeanisation research. One aspect often overlooked is the impact of “soft” law instruments such as the “Open Method of Coordination” (OMC). Through the OMC all member states agree on common goals and exchange “best practices” to improve policy coordination in a certain area without the obligation (how) to design policies. OMC impacts in individual member states have been studied extensively, yet a comparative perspective explaining their variance is lacking. This study by Niclas Beinborn tries to fill this gap by analysing the different impacts of a recent OMC: the European Youth Strategy 2010 (EUYS). His analysis is twofold: in a first step he applies theory-driven fuzzy-set QCA to a novel dataset depicting the variance of national activities around the EUYS. As causalities remain unclear, in a second step he presents an innovative analysis framework encompassing two dimensions – national motivation and relative openness to implement non-binding EU law – to define ideal types of OMC adaptation. Case studies on the EUYS in Germany and Ireland proof the potential of this framework to explain why and how OMCs work (differently). About the author Niclas Beinborn worked as a research associate at the German Research Institute for Public Administration in Speyer. There, he extensively studied child and youth policy in Germany and Europe. As of 2021, he works as a desk officer in the federal administration.

Abstract: The Euro crisis of 2008 had a deep impact on German-Greek relations. The exchange of blows in media, and amongst politicians created a deep divide and made old wounds visible - wounds that lie in the Occupation of Greece by Nazi Germany and its fascist allies during World War 2. In 2014 German foreign policy towards Greece shifted to include reconciliatory measures, marking the beginning of Germany's foreign policy of reconciliation. One area of focus is memory culture and the Greek martyr communities, meaning villages and towns that experienced extreme violence, destruction, and executions. Diving into these places of terror and memory, the book analyzes German foreign policy of reconciliation while providing a profound view onto history, diplomacy, and the widely unknown Greek memory landscape. It entails a thorough review of German-Greek relations, more than seven unique maps and 10 case studies, accompanied by photographs and over 35 interviews. It shows how foreign policy, conflict and reconciliation intertwine and how international affairs meet the local level of everyday citizens. About the author Charalampos Babis Karpouchtsis is a political scientist with a background in foreign policy, strategy and memory studies. He finished his PhD in conflict and reconciliation studies in the Jena Center for Reconciliation Studies. He is a research associate in the University of the Armed Forces in Hamburg and a JCRS fellow.

Abstract: This book delves into the decision-making process behind (exclusive) breastfeeding in Mexico, examining the intricate interplay of individual and institutional factors that influence this critical health choice. Positioned within the context of Mexico's complex healthcare structures and existing health inequalities, this study serves as a significant case analysis within the Latin American region. Employing a comprehensive multi-methodological approach, the research combines quantitative analysis with qualitative insights from interviews with mothers. With a focus on unraveling how Mexican mothers decide to breastfeed, the study addresses the impact of institutional and individual factors, and the personal and structural barriers faced by mothers. Key findings underscore the pivotal role of childbirth experiences, prenatal care quality, and social support systems in shaping breastfeeding decisions. This research reveals that, despite efforts to promote health literacy and individual responsibility, institutional factors exert significant influence on breastfeeding choices. By providing unique insights and practical implications, this research contributes substantially to the fields of public health and sociology of health. About the author Jamie Lee Harder is a research associate at the University of Siegen, Germany in the Department of Social Sciences. Her particular emphasis is on health inequality, international health policy, and public health.

Abstract: Is a new spirit of capitalism emerging as a result of neoliberal adjustments in the global economy? The internationalization of management and its comprehensive neoliberals imprint fall short of the assumptions represented by globalization theory. Empirical data on the life trajectories and action orientations of CEOs from leading industrial companies in nine countries across Europe, Asia, and Latin America indicate that local institutional frameworks, diverse regional challenges, and historically embedded cultural influences exert more significant influence than global trends. Different strategies and structures have been identified based on problem-centered interviews with top executives, and they are made accessible for the first time in English for comparative purposes. Abstract: Why did the postcolonial Tunisian state promise development? How do these promises reverberate in the hopes and dreams of Tunisians today? And how do they fit into contemporary global capitalist structures of exploitation? Starting from the everyday life at a French factory in Tunisia this book explores the relationship between the political economy of Tunisia, postcolonial promises of the Tunisian state and the hopes and dreams of Tunisians working in the factory. It argues for taking the concept of development seriously not as a desirable policy goal but as a multi-dimensional social and political fact: as the unfolding of global capitalism, as a postcolonial nation-state project, and as a personal everyday imaginary. The book employs a longue durée perspective that analyzes contemporary desires and expectations while tracing and placing them inside Tunisia’s history. It thus contributes to our understanding of state-society relations and global capitalism in Tunisia. About the author André Weißenfels is a research associate at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin. His research focusses on the political economy of West Asia and North Africa as well as community decision-making processes and collective resource management.

Abstract: Some (web) television texts achieve immense commercial success. Certain commercially successful texts boast dedicated, creative, and exponentially growing fandoms. These fan communities engage in specific fan practices that are significantly influenced by the textualities of the texts and their contexts of production, distribution, and consumption. Increased fan engagement resulting in the acceleration of the text’s popularity leads to the following inquiries: · How is the series influenced by the interactions among and the relationships between the producers, consumers, distributors, and content? · What are the sites of these interactions? · What are the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that impact the series? · How do the text’s contexts of production, distribution, and consumption lead to the text’s popularity in mainstream media? In pursuit of an answer to these questions, the analytical lens of the ‘mediaverse’ is developed. An inductive study, this book explores four television series’ that fall within the scope of speculative fiction to characterise the mediaverse and highlight the interconnectedness among the networked nodes of new media. These wield a significant influence on the production and consumption of media and its presence in our everyday lives, thus outlining the mediaverse as a tool for the analysis of a media texts and practices that shape contemporary media culture. About the author Ashumi Shah is a PhD graduate from the University of Augsburg. Currently, she is using her powers for good in the areas of content marketing and copywriting.

Abstract: This book investigates water issues in the Euphrates-Tigris basin between Turkey, Syria and Iraq (Iran). It presents the importance of water in the world and especially for the countries of the Euphrates-Tigris basin, the water resources of the three riparian countries, their advantages and disadvantages, the amount of reservoir construction in the three riparian countries, their water disagreements and conflicts, international water law. The importance of water in the Ottoman period is presented, the evolution of Turkey's water policy in the 20th and 21st centuries, the connection and interdependence of Turkey's water policy with its foreign and domestic policies are shown in detail. Separate reference is made to non-state actors, such as the Kurds of Turkey, Syria and Iraq. The work emphasizes that Turkey is a unique country in the world with its water policy in the Euphrates-Tigris basin: no other country is able to use water in such a multi-purpose way to achieve various goals. Abstract: Intertextuality 2.0 bridges the gap between linguistic research on intertextuality and research on metadiscourse through a case study analysis of online discussion boards about weight loss. This book examines how people use linguistic strategies such as repeating or paraphrasing others' words with multimodal resources like emojis and GIFs in online discussion boards focused on weight loss support to create intertextuality - or connections between texts, interactions, and other creations that facilitate meaning-making. These strategies allow posters to engage in metadiscourse, or communication about language and communication. By applying the perspective of metadiscourse in a study of intertextuality, Gordon offers important new insights into why intertextuality occurs and what it accomplishes: it helps people manage the challenges of communication.

Abstract: The question of whether men are predisposed to war runs hot in contemporary scholarship and online discussion. Within this debate, chimpanzee behavior is often cited to explain humans' propensity for violence; the claim is that male chimpanzees kill outsiders because they are evolutionarily inclined, suggesting to some that people are too. The longstanding critique that killing is instead due to human disturbance has been pronounced dead and buried. In Chimpanzees, War, and History, R. Brian Ferguson challenges this consensus. Bringing readers on a journey through theoretical struggle and clashing ideas about chimpanzees, bonobos, and evolution, Ferguson opens new ground on the age-old question--are men born to kill?.

Abstract: Over the two decades since the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, peacebuilding interventions around the globe have increasingly incorporated gender perspectives. Yet, the results have been uneven. In Building Peace, Rebuilding Patriarchy, Melissa Johnston explains why gender interventions often fail to help those who most need them, using the case of Timor-Leste, a country subjected to high levels of peacebuilding and gender interventions between 1999 and 2017. Looking at three types of gender interventions, Johnston makes the case that as peacebuilders seek to rebuild war-torn societies, understanding the intersection of social and gender order is more important than ever.

Abstract: Offering a new reading of Antonio Gramsci's political theory, Radical Politics argues that hegemony is a process of differentiation in which political culture is always changing, and always with the goal of moving toward expanded freedom. Over the course of the book, Peter D. Thomas looks at the way in which various theorists have approached the dilemma of how to engage productively in radical politics and explains why hegemony is a distinctive method of doing politics rather than an end goal. A forceful contribution to ongoing debates about the nature and orientation of contemporary emancipatory movements, Radical Politics provides a counterintuitive interpretation of Gramsci's famous and newly relevant work.

Abstract: Women We Love: Femininities and the Korean Wave is an edited volume exploring femininities in and around the Korean Wave since 2000. While studies on the Korean Wave are abundant, there is a dearth of thought put toward the female-identifying stars, characters, and fans who shape and lead this crucial cultural movement. This collection of essays is one of the first works to focus on gender and the key female actors of this global phenomenon. Using "women" as an inclusive term extending to all those who self-define as women, this volume examines the role of women in K-pop and K-drama industries and fandom spaces, encompassing crucial intersectional topics such as queering of gender, dissemination of media, and fan culture. In addition to the communities engaged with visual culture of the Korean Wave, the audience for Women We Love will reflect the contributors to this text. They are K-pop and K-drama fans, queer, international; they are also academics of Asian histories, sociology, gender and sexuality, art history, and visual culture. The chapters are playful, intersectional, and will be adapted well into syllabi for media studies, gender studies, visual culture studies, sociology, and contemporary global history.

Abstract: Ayman al-Zawahiri--co-founder of al Qaeda and successor to bin Laden--was one of the most influential terrorists of the modern era. In the first in-depth biography of the Egyptian doctor and ideologue, Sajjan M. Gohel meticulously unpacks al-Zawahiri's long career, which spanned over 50 years, in the growth and evolution of transnational terrorism. From an illustrious Egyptian family, al-Zawahiri chose to rebel against his own society and the international order. Through his travels across multiple continents, the Egyptian found himself in many of the places where history was made. A pioneer of terrorist strategies and tactics, al-Zawahiri left an indelible legacy for al-Qaeda and other terrorists to build upon.

Abstract: Including interviews and focus group data, The Radical Imagination of Black Women challenges political science's current approach to political ambition by exploring how Black women decide to seek political office. Pearl K. Ford Dowe argues that Black women's political ambition often manifests itself outside formal politics, in activism and community building, a process that is linked to a wider radical vision for a full democracy. This is ambition that occurs in a specific context of marginalization, and both motivation and the conditions surrounding such motivation are critical to understanding the full range of Black women's political work. By focusing on Black women's experiences in elite politics, The Radical Imagination of Black Women is a much-needed intervention in the literature on electoral ambition, women in politics, and candidates and elections.
