Abstract: Dirty data is everywhere. Have you had a letter addressed to you with your name misspelled? That's dirty data. Do you have trouble finding a product on a website because it's not in the right category? That's dirty data. Do you have trouble finding a person or company name in your system because of a typo? That's dirty data. And it causes problems, lots of problems. Before software implementation, machine learning and AI, you need clean data. It's THE most important thing to fix before doing any of these things, and we're all expected to be able to clean or fix this data, yet no one tells us how to do it! Some of the most common data problems occur in name, address, email and phone number data, and this course will cover this off. While there are many data-cleaning tools out there, almost everyone uses Excel, including non-data professionals, and it's important to have the skills to be familiar with and be able to get to know your data before you use these tools. Abstract: In an ideal world, usability testing might be considered exclusively the job responsibility of UX designers or researchers. However, for many of us and for various reasons, that just isn’t a reality. No matter what the situation is, running basic usability tests is something everyone is completely capable of—and it comes with the bonus of making us better at our own jobs, as well, by better understanding our users. In this course, we’ll discuss finding participants, thinking through the testing logistics, writing and facilitating a usability test, and reviewing the data. Each learner will get the chance to write a usability testing script for a feature in their own website or application that they’d like to test. Then, they’ll be challenged to practice usability tests with those scripts to get hands-on experience facilitating tests. Learners will leave this course feeling empowered and confident to start a usability testing program at their own workplace!

Abstract: Getting out of tech debt can feel like a Sisyphean task. After weeks of work, the success case is to have the app working the way it used to. It's not uncommon for organizations to declare code bankruptcy and rewrite working systems from the ground up. How do we end up in this situation? How do we measure it? And how do we alleviate, or even better, prevent such a situation? Join expert Chelsea Troy to explore technical debt and its impact on an organization. You'll learn how this debt builds up, how to measure it, and how to zero in on areas of greatest need--identifying high-leverage code changes and prioritizing them over renovations. You'll also explore the skills that tech teams use to prevent and reduce tech debt so you can apply them in your own organization. What you'll learn and how you can apply it: By the end of this course, you should be able to marshal you team's morass of frustration around your technical debt into an actual plan with prioritized steps to reduce and control it. This course is for you because: You're an engineer who wants to understand and reduce tech debt. You work with engineers or manage large projects and want the code to work, and keep working, without burning out the team. Prerequisites: Experience leading technical teams or working with a code base that's becoming hard to maintain (useful but not required).

Abstract: Join host David Flanagan for a friendly, fun, and informative learning experience as two ops superstars compete live to debug a broken Kubernetes cluster. The premise of this highly engaging show is simple. Two days prior to the live event, David spins up two working Kubernetes clusters. The chosen contestants have the next 48 hours to break them. Then they go live in front of a virtual audience to actively debug the broken cluster. Registrants for the event get to witness the strategies, tactics, and tools used by two skilled individuals—and perhaps pick up some creative solutions for their own Kubernetes problems. Kubernetes is infinitely configurable, and rarely are two clusters broken in the same way because each contestant brings unique experience, knowledge, and skill, and each will debug and remediate differently.

Abstract: Software development is full of uncertainty. And as a services company, Bounteous has to balance many challenges around that lack of certainty: clients want to be able to make changes, but they still want predictability on time and costs. In the earlier days of its growth, the company struggled with this balance. After considering different methodologies to help address these pain points, Bounteous opted to use Agile because the principles behind it would help the organization embrace a more nimble mindset. But evolving an Agile approach to support this at scale across numerous clients while providing enough flexibility to adapt to specific client situations created several challenges--an experience that really highlights the general problems companies may have in adopting Agile. Join us for this Case Study with Bounteous CTO Seth Dobbs to learn how Bounteous adopted Agile to enable flexibility for its customers while balancing the needs for transparency and predictability across the organization. You'll hear about the roadblocks the company encountered (and how it overcame them) and get insight into how executive support, organizational structure, and team commitment contributed to developing a successful Agile approach. Recorded on February 8, 2022. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events. O'Reilly Case Studies explore how organizations have overcome common challenges in business and technology through a series of one-hour interactive events. Abstract: The Gilded Rose is a classic refactoring kata, available in many languages at https://github.com/emilybache/GildedRose-Refactoring-Kata. In this video series we start with the Java version and show how to migrate it to Kotlin as well as refactoring the procedural code into both object-oriented and functional styles. The rules of the exercise are here. Part 1 takes the procedural Java code and ends with a nice OO solution, using inheritance to represent the different types of item. Part 2 replaces the inheritance with composition, getting perhaps closer to the heart of the domain. Part 3 removes the mutation inherent in the procedural code to give a nice functional solution. Part 4 is a bonus refactoring, starting from the beginning to see how far the update code can be improved while making no changes to any other files. The code is available at https://github.com/dmcg/gilded-rose-kata. This video content supplements the O'Reilly book Java to Kotlin, A Refactoring Guidebook.

Abstract: As companies deploy products that depend on free and open source software (FOSS), corporate funding has become both essential and complex. To sustain the open source community, companies need to build infrastructure and create guiding principles to support the people at the heart of open source. Join us for this Case Study with Indeed open source lead Duane O’Brien and open source program manager Jade Applegate to learn how Indeed developed the FOSS Contributor Fund framework to drive participation in the open source community by providing wider visibility into important projects and democratizing funding for those projects. You’ll discover how a FOSS Contributor Fund can give your organization insight into which open source projects are important to support, help you develop connections with the maintainers of FOSS dependencies, and identify new open source advocates and supporters—all while encouraging open source participation among your employees. In just an hour, you’ll get a detailed account of the framework, find out how Indeed has already distributed over $400,000 in FOSS Contributor funds, and hear lessons learned from the company's three-year experience with open source advocacy and funding.

Abstract: There's a pressing need for tools and workflows that meet data scientists where they are. This is also a serious business need: how to enable an organization of data scientists, who aren't software engineers by training, to build and deploy end-to-end machine learning workflows and applications independently. The new category of tools, frameworks, and processes that fill this need is often called MLOps. In this edition of Radar Talks, Hugo Bowne-Anderson explains why machine learning applications need special treatment in the first place and why we can't just fold them into existing DevOps best practices. You'll also explore what a modern technology stack for streamlined ML processes looks like and discover how you can start applying the stack in practice today. Recorded on April 5, 2022. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events.
