    Kurzfassung: "Seit etwa 150 Jahren gibt es die Religionsgemeinschaft Jehovas Zeugen in Europa. Ihr Weg in den einzelnen Ländern war auch davon abhängig, wie diese missionierende Gemeinschaft von der Mehrheit der Andersgläubigen, der Staatsmacht und den etablierten Kirchen behandelt wurde. Insofern ist die Geschichte von Jehovas Zeugen in Europa auch eine Geschichte über die gesellschaftliche Verfasstheit dieser Länder - deren Bereitschaft, religiöse Minderheiten zu akzeptieren und zu integrieren. Nicht nur in Diktaturen, sondern auch in manchen demokratischen Staaten erlebten Jehovas Zeugen Unterdrückung und Verfolgung, in anderen konnten sie sich relativ frei entfalten. Wie sich die unterschiedlichen Verhältnisse auf die Religionsgemeinschaft in der jeweiligen nationalen Gesellschaft auswirkten und welche Herausforderungen - zum Teil bis in die Gegenwart - Jehovas Zeugen zu bestehen hatten und noch haben, ist das Thema dieser auf drei Bände angelegten Studie."

Presenting various case studies, the volume unveils the intricate web of border dynamics and practices, including the nuanced interplay of border disputes within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) member states. The contributions shed new light on how contested borders and liquid modes of governance have impacted the engagement of international organizations such as the European Union (EU), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and OSCE in security crises and conflict prevention. Delving deeper, a special part dissects the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and examines European and international responses. By analyzing the stances of diverse European countries, their neighborhood, and international organizations, this section uncovers commonalities and disparities in their approaches to the Ukrainian crisis.

In the last chapter, the author offers ideas for new pedagogical approaches to teaching European Studies. Kamil Zwolski is Associate Professor in International Politics at the University of Southampton, UK, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Security Governance. His research interests include the theory and practice of European security and its governance, Europe-Russia relations and the role of the EU/NATO in European security. His previous book, European Security in Integration Theory (2018), examines federalism and functionalism – two fundamentals, yet largely forgotten, theories of international integration, in the context of the war in Ukraine and contemporary European security order.

    Kurzfassung: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry. In doing so, the book investigates European roles and behavior in the contemporary US-China-Europe triangular relationship.     Kurzfassung: This book is dedicated to the role of soft law in the enforcement of EU law vis-à-vis the Member States. Apart from the Treaty infringement procedure, there is an increasing number of procedures, mostly laid down in secondary law, by which the EU – often availing itself of soft law – aims at ensuring Member States’ compliance with EU law. These procedures are compared with each other, also with respect to their use of soft law, and their conformity with primary law is examined
    Kurzfassung: Diese Arbeit widmet sich der Rolle des soft law bei der Durchsetzung von Unionsrecht gegenüber den Mitgliedstaaten. Neben dem Vertragsverletzungsverfahren gibt es immer mehr, v.a. sekundärrechtlich geregelte Verfahren, mit denen die EU Rechtsdurchsetzung gegenüber den Mitgliedstaaten betreibt, oft auch mittels unverbindlicher Akte. Diese Verfahren werden, auch hinsichtlich der Verwendung von soft law, miteinander verglichen und auf ihre Primärrechtskonformität hin überprüft

    Kurzfassung: In der juristischen Literatur wird der Begriff der "Pfadabhängigkeit" zumeist metaphorisch verwendet. Anders ist dies in den benachbarten Gesellschaftswissenschaften, wo das gleichnamige Konzept der Erklärung insbesondere institutioneller Entwicklungsprozesse dient. Nico Schröter geht der Frage nach, ob und wie eine Rezeption dieses Konzepts auch für die Rechtswissenschaft erkenntnisversprechend ist. Dabei kann eine (informierte) Rezeption insbesondere dazu dienen, informelle Strukturbildungsprozesse im Recht besser zu verstehen. So bietet Pfadabhängigkeit eine plausible Erklärung für die relative Stabilität judikativer Entscheidungsstandards und rechtsdogmatischer Sätze sowie - in Ansätzen - auch dafür, inwieweit diese einem Wandel unterliegen. Die Rezeption des Pfadabhängigkeitskonzepts liefert daher eine Antwort auf bestehende Theoriedefizite bei der Erklärung rechtlicher Phänomene

    Kurzfassung: Over a million Kurdish-Yezidi refugees are dispersed across European cities and towns. However, they are neither recognized as a distinct community of stateless immigrants nor as a distinct European ethnic or religious minority. They are frequently utilized as data sources without having a voice to address their challenges. This oral testimony project, moving beyond, but contributing to, conventional academic research, provides these communities with a space to tackle multiple questions in their own languages and with their own voices. The book seeks to answer what drives their departures from their home countries, how they escape, what shapes their lives in receiving cities, and finally, how homeland affairs influence their lives in new environments. By addressing all these themes, this book presents refugee-centric knowledge by and with refugees as objects and subjects of their narratives and transcends neoliberal humanitarian, state-centric, and colonial hegemonic epistemes that limit refugees' epistemic capabilities and viewpoints. Veysi Dag is a research fellow of the Minerva Foundation at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a research associate at SOAS, University of London. His research interests focus on studies of migration and diaspora, governance, social movements and transnationalism, comparative politics with a focus on refugee and migration policies in Europe, peacebuilding and conflict transformation, and regional policy analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics and the Kurdish-Turkish conflict.

Ishiyama and Breuning extend traditional explanations centered on socioeconomic, cultural, and historical factors to argue that the actions of leaders of ethnic segments-too often ignored-are also critical determinants of policy outcomes. Applying a framework derived from comparative politics and IR theory, the authors explore two sets of empirical cases: the emergence of new nationalisms in old European democracies (the United Kingdom and Belgium) and the reemergence of old nationalisms in several new democracies (Bulgaria, Slovakia, Estonia, and Latvia).     Kurzfassung: New research into medieval women from the Anglo-Saxon to the late medieval period demonstrates their energy, defiance and wit. The phenomenon of medieval women's middle age is a stage in the lifecycle that has been frequently overlooked in preference for the examination of female youth and old age. The essays collected here, ranging from the Anglo-Saxon to the late medieval period, and drawing variously from literary studies, history, law, art and theology, address this lacuna. Taking a variety of critical approaches, the contributors consider medieval definitions, paradigms andexperiences of female middle age, analysing how the middle-aged woman perceived herself subjectively, as well as how she was perceived by others. They seek to challenge the received wisdom that in the middle ages, at forty, womenwere deemed "old" and, from that point onwards, their thoughts should be focused on preparing for death.     Kurzfassung: National majorities and their governments often demand that immigrants and other minorities must be "good": they should work hard, contribute to society, and adapt to dominant cultural norms. Such stereotypical labels for national outsiders, ranging from "good immigrants" to "good Muslims" and "model minorities", imply that their inclusion and recognition becomes conditional on fulfilling certain standards of behaviour and identity that are predetermined by the national majority. The affected minorities respond in diverse ways, at times striving to be recognised as "good" and at times rejecting these regimes of conditional inclusion and citizenship openly. This book offers ground-breaking insights on how these dynamics of conditional inclusion and "good" citizenship play out today, with a focus on migrant and immigrant-origin minorities in Europe and the Americas. This book shows that conditional inclusion is a globally widespread tool for controlling and rank-ordering minorities. As immigrants respond through diverse struggles for inclusion and recognition, these struggles reveal a hidden battleground of citizenship on which minorities negotiate who can be included and accepted in a given state or society. Their experience shows that conditionality is not an outlier of citizenship, but rather one of its universal core principles.

    Kurzfassung: This book, a follow-up publication to the 2016 volume Foreign Fighters under International Law and Beyond, zooms in on the responses that the international community and individual States are implementing in response to (prospective and actual) returning foreign fighters (FFs) and their families, focusing on returnees from Syria and Iraq to European countries. As States and international organisations are still ‘learning by doing’, the role of the academic community is to help steer the process by bridging the divide between international standards and their implementation at the national level and between security concerns and human rights law. Furthermore, the academic community can and should assist in identifying ways forward that are both effective, sustainable and international law-compliant. Those are, ultimately, the goals that the present volume seeks to pursue. The observations, recommendations and warnings included in this book will be useful in future debates on (returning) FFs, both in the academic world and in the world of policy makers and practitioners, as well as to the public at large.     Kurzfassung: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

    Kurzfassung: Die Covid-19-Pandemie fordert die europäische Idee heraus: Denn nicht nur die EU-Außengrenzen, sondern auch Binnengrenzen innerhalb des Schengen-Raums wurden ab Frühjahr 2020 wieder verstärkt kontrolliert, durch an deren Überquerung anknüpfende Quarantäne- und Test-Vorschriften zum Hindernis oder auch zeitweise ganz geschlossen. Damit sind die geographischen Grenzverläufe für Berufspendelnde, für Ausflügler:innen oder für Einkaufende wieder ,real‘. Doch reichen die Auswirkungen über Transit, Tourismus und Handel weit hinaus: Mit den verstärkten Kontrollen, Quarantänepflichten und Schließungen verändert sich auch die Wirkung der territorialen Grenz(ziehung)en.     Kurzfassung: This book discusses the emerging threats to European stability in different borderland regions, from the Greater Middle East to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Black Sea. It highlights the specific geopolitical risks that could, left unchecked, have global repercussions. The book shows how recent events have exasperated underlying problems that have been slowly destabilizing each of these regions for years. It also looks at the geopolitical constraints and objectives of the countries within these regions to build a basis for understanding their current and future security challenges. While doing so, the book discusses the European borderlands in a non-traditional way, proposing a specific framework to study them, going beyond historical analysis and employing a heuristic process and in-depth socio-economic analysis to understand regional power relations and trends. It develops the key concepts of "core borderland" and "geopolitical node" to understand the future challenges that Europe in particular and Eurasia, in general, will face, discussing specific features shaping current affairs and identifying the main drivers - countries and specific regional elements - for the future stability of the borderlands. This book will appeal to students and scholars of international relations, as well as policy-makers, practitioners, and international organizations interested in a better understanding of current and future challenges at Europe's borderlands and the security risks the European continent faces.

The subjects include changes in maritime labour at large, changes in specific groups of deck, catering or engine room personnel, such as captains, cooks, catering personnel, engineers, or radio-operators. A number of chapters employ a prosopographical or micro-historical approach, while others apply a spatial perspective, analyze business records, materials from professional associations or distil information from large sets of quantitative data. This book will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, maritime and labour history. Karel Davids is Professor Emeritus of Economic and Social History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has published and taught on economic and social history, maritime history, the history of technology and global history. Joost Schokkenbroek has been Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since July 2017. Prior to this he was affiliated with The Kendall Whaling Museum in the USA (1988-1990) and Het Scheepvaartmuseum (The Dutch National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam (1991-2017), where he worked as Chief Curator, in combination with a Professorship of Maritime History and Maritime Heritage at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. .

    Kurzfassung: Why does an entire society believe that there are witches who must be burned? What roles did the emerging 'state', the professions of clerics and jurists, and the public involved play in each case? And how could this project be finished? From a sociological point of view, the findings of recent international research on witches provide a model of a more general, highly ambivalent, 'pastoral' attitude, according to which a shepherd has to care for the welfare of his flock as well as for its erring sheep. The first main part describes the clerical initial situation, which developed the 'Dominican' demonological model of witchcraft on the basis of the still dominant magico-religious mentality in the 15th century. A model, according to the second part of the book, which then in the course of the 16th century in Western Europe increasingly fell into the hands of the not so innocent jurists. From there it developed into a legal witch persecution that realized the early European witch model from the village witch to the mass persecutions to the late child witches. The third part describes how witch persecutions slowly became less important towards the end of the 17th century as a general witchcraft 'politics' game in the transition from a confessional state to a (court) 'civil service' state. The author Prof. Dr. Stephan Quensel is a lawyer and criminologist. Until his retirement in 2002, he was a professor in the Department of Resocialization and Rehabilitation in the Sociology program at the University of Bremen. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Diego Palacios Cerezales is a Senior Researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid in Spain. Diego’s research focuses on the transnational history of petitioning from the Age of Revolution to the third wave of democratisation (1789–1989), as well as on the history of policing in Spain and Portugal.     Kurzfassung: Some manufacturing activities are among the most difficult human activities to make climate neutral and they are typically regionally concentrated. Across Europe these regions are often socioeconomically relatively weak. Yet these sectors provide relatively well-paid jobs in many of these regions. Some of these regions may also have more difficult access to infrastructure to provide the hydrogen, carbon capture and storage and zero-emission freight, which can be important to some of these activities. Industrial transitions to climate neutrality therefore have regional development implications. Since regions differ in their socio-economic conditions, understanding these regional development implications will help policy makers prepare a just transition. This publication identifies manufacturing activities that are particularly difficult to decarbonise and the transformations they require. It shows how these activities are distributed across European regions, focusing on employment at emission-intensive production locations. It identifies conditions for getting access to needed infrastructure and how access conditions differ across regions. It investigates the socio-economic vulnerabilities of affected regions, their manufacturing businesses and workers. In some regions, workers and firms may be particularly vulnerable, for example, because of low-skill jobs, type of employment contract or low productivity.
