    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: Between those who possessed liberal, progressive values and those who held to traditional, conservative beliefs.1 In the 1990s, the term was reintroduced into the cultural zeitgeist by University of Virginia sociologist James Davison Hunter, with the publication of Culture Wars: The Struggle -- ~ -- This book contains many of the ideas that have shaped the culture wars of the last two decades. Iconoclast, as a title, may seem somewhat hyperbolic. I know that the term had been used in reference to the New Atheist writer

    Abstract: Sabrina Ardizzoni’s book is an in-depth analysis of Hakka women in tulou villages in Southeast China. Based on fieldwork, data acquired through local documents, diverse material and symbolic culture elements, this study adopts an original approach that includes historical-textual investigation and socio-anthropological enquiry.     Abstract: Die Sichtbarkeit der globalen »Boykott, Desinvestitionen und Sanktionen«-Kampagne (BDS) gegen Israel nimmt weltweit zu. Unter Berufung auf die universalen Menschenrechte fordern BDS-Akteure einen umfassenden Boykott des jüdischen Staats. Gleichzeitig wird die Bewegung oft als antisemitisch klassifiziert, was zu der Frage führt: Können Antisemitismen auch im Namen der Menschenrechte formuliert werden? Natascha Müller nimmt sich diesem Komplex an und untersucht, wie »menschenrechtsorientierte Antisemitismen« weltweit für den BDS-Diskurs mobilisieren. Durch die Entwicklung eines innovativen Theoriemodells gelingt ihr eine differenzierte Beurteilung der BDS-Akteur*innen und ihrer Forderungen

    Abstract: Die Verspottung von Personen und Gruppen als »Spießer« ist in der (deutschsprachigen) Lebenswelt ein weitverbreitetes Phänomen - umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass diese Alltagspraxis bisher kaum erforscht wurde. Sonja Engel und Dominik Schrage widmen sich der Analyse von Spießerschmähungen aus historisch-soziologischer Perspektive und zeichnen die Genealogie des Spießerverdikts nach, indem sie sie ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Die Invektiven gegen Philister, Klein- und Spießbürger als Sozialfiguren der gesellschaftlichen Mitte erweisen sich dabei als relevante Momente der Etablierung und Veränderung von Vorstellungen sozialer Ordnung, die bis in die Gegenwart Wirkung entfalten

    Abstract: "When countries try to navigate through the aftermath of conflict, trust is the main focus and the catalyst for rebuilding societies, nations, economies and democracies. Trust is vital, not only at an individual level, but also at a community level: trust is important to sustain peace and also works as a trigger to end conflicts. But why are some divided societies more prone to the collapse of social trust than others? This book uses empirical and case study research, including qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), statistical methods, observations and interviews, to compare which policies and institutions to build trust have a greater impact on divided societies in the Middle East. The book focuses on Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria, but analyses the results from these societies by also comparing other political and ethno-religiously divided societies beyond the MENA region. The book does not want to forward a universal 'theory' that gives us the origin of trust and how it is destroyed. Rather, it aims to provide a comprehensive explanation of generalised trust in divided societies and answer the question: under which institutions is generalised trust in a divided society maintained or destroyed, and how does this happen? Of key importance to Abdalhadi Alijla is to highlight the formal and informal institutions that inspire an elevated level of trust to help make societies less vulnerable to internal conflict, and also to give voice to the real people who live and experience divided societies."--
