    Kurzfassung: In 2015 many camps were opened to accommodate newly arriving migrants in Berlin. Christian Sowa studies this form of accommodation. Moving beyond an exclusive focus on borders and migration, he argues that camp accommodation must be thought of and studied as part of the urban context and as a specific form of housing. The study provides an in-depth case study, discusses policy alternatives, argues for »housing for all instead of camps«, and contributes to bringing urban and migration studies into public discussion. In times of new waves of migration, the topic of migrant accommodation within urban environments remains highly relevant today.

    Kurzfassung: Weder in der Technikphilosophie noch in der technischen Bildung besteht Übereinkunft hinsichtlich der Verwendung des Begriffs Technik. Da verwundert es nicht, dass auch die empirische Erforschung des Technikbegriffs von Kindern und Jugendlichen ein Forschungsdesiderat darstellt. Im Rahmen der hier vorgelegten Arbeit soll diesem Desiderat nachgegangen werden. Mittels Alltagssprachlichem Struktur-Lege-Spiel und Fragebogen wird untersucht, welche subjektiven Vorstellungen Kinder und Jugendliche bezüglich des Begriffs Technik zum Ausdruck bringen und wie stabil diese Begriffe sind. Die Aussagen der Kinder und Jugendlichen werden mittels strukturierender Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Im Zentrum steht dabei das entwickelte Kategoriensystem, mit dem die Technikbegriffe aus den kindlichen bzw. jugendlichen Aussagen erfasst werden. Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass keine typischen Technikbegriffe aus dem Datenmaterial herausgearbeitet werden können. Die Technikbegriffe der befragten Kinder und Jugendlichen unterscheiden sich stark. Allerdings kann gezeigt werden, dass die Kinder und Jugendlichen zum Teil scharfsinnige Gedanken über Technik zum Ausdruck bringen

    Kurzfassung: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline.     Kurzfassung: This book comprises 40 short texts by urban sustainability scholars from around the globe. The scholars are recipients of a six-month research stay grant from the Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), a DAAD Exceed center funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). SMUS is a global network of researchers and practitioners from over 48 universities and institutions who work together to improve academic education in spatial disciplines. Through collaborative teaching, workshops, conferences, and training, network partners work across disciplines to advance urban sustainability. From September 2020 through February 2021, 40 scholars participated in the centre’s ‘Developing a PhD Proposal’ program by organising workshops, partaking in excursions, and attending classes. The classes covered topics such as research ethics and skills, spatial methods, and urban sustainability, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal #11, which is about ‘making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’. As part of their coursework, the students were tasked with writing short texts about how the topics covered manifest themselves in their respective home countries. This book is a compilation of those country replies, giving the reader a glimpse into urban sustainability perspectives from around the globe. The book includes a series of maps depicting the geographic locations represented in the country replies. They have been included to help the reader navigate the book and to highlight the diversity of topics and themes researchers are working on in the SMUS network.
    Kurzfassung: Dieses Buch enthält 40 Kurzbeiträge von Forschenden aus dem Gebiet der urbanen Nachhaltigkeit aus aller Welt. Die Verfasser*innen der Texte waren Teil eines sechsmonatigen Forschungsstipendiums des Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), einem vom Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) geförderten DAAD exceed-Zentrum. SMUS ist ein globales Netzwerk, von Wissenschaftler*innen und Fachkräften aus über 48 Universitäten und Institutionen, das sich zum Ziel setzt raumbezogene Disziplinen durch Forschung und Lehre zu fördern. Durch gemeinsame Lehrveranstaltungen, Workshops, Konferenzen und Fortbildungen arbeiten die Netzwerkpartner interdisziplinär an der Umsetzung der urbanen Nachhaltigkeit. In den Modulen wurden Themen wie Forschungsethik und -kompetenz, raumbezogene Methoden und urbane Nachhaltigkeit behandelt, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf dem Sustainable Development Goal #11 lag, "Städte und Siedlungen inklusiv, sicher, widerstandsfähig und nachhaltig zu gestalten". Als Teil ihres Austauschs hatten die Forschenden die Aufgabe, Kurztexte darüber zu verfassen, wie sich die behandelte Thematik in ihren jeweiligen Heimatstädten darstellt. Diese Publikation ist eine Sammlung der Antworten der Teilnehmenden zu bestimmten urbanen Fragestellungen und soll auf die Perspektiven der städtischen Nachhaltigkeit aus den unterschiedlichen Weltregionen eingehen. Das Buch enthält eine Reihe von Karten, auf denen die unterschiedlichen geografischen Regionen der Beiträge dargestellt werden. Sie dienen der Orientierung im Buch und verdeutlichen die Vielfalt der Themen, mit denen sich die Forschenden im SMUS-Netzwerk beschäftigen.

    Kurzfassung: In both Management and I/O Psychology, contributions to theory remain an important, and in many cases, sole criterion for evaluating submissions to top journals. In many ways, the definition of theory and the primacy of theory in the organizational sciences is an outlier; in most sciences, articles rarely even mention theories, much less build themselves around advancing theory. We propose that the classic description of the scientific methods provides a better guide to understanding the relationships between data, methods and theory than our current model, which often starts and ends with proposing a theory, which may never again be referenced or tested. We describe a pyramid of types of evidence that is useful for assessing the reliability and worth of particular sorts of data and show how this approach to evidence informs the scientific method and assists in identifying and building useful theories

    Kurzfassung: "This book is an ethnographic investigation of the everyday professional lives of experimental cognitive psychologists, aimed at conveying to readers a sense of the social world of thelaboratory, and explaining how the field produces knowledge about human cognition. Emily Martin did fieldwork in three labs conducting research in normal human cognition. In the early daysof her fieldwork, Martin was struck by how irrelevant her own subjective experience was to the experimenters. What researchers conducting the experiments were seeking was data about how her brain responded to stimuli such as photographs and videos. Her own responses to the situation -- the set-up of the experiment, etc -- were very much beside the point. This led Martin to wonder when, in the history of this field, introspection and related "messy" data concerning the social conditions of lab experimentation came to be expelled. Her book examines this history, provides a comparison with the history of her own field (anthropology), and discusses the evolution of a pillar of contemporary experimental cognitive psychology, the psychological experiment. In the course of this book Martin reports on her discussions with practicing experimental psychologists about the efficacy of placing persons in such unusual settings in the search for generalknowledge. What emerges is an account of the cognitive psychology experiment as an artificial construction in which a certain kind of knowledge is produced and a certain kind of humansubject is created. But this book is not a "debunking" of the discipline of experimental cognitive psychology. Martin readily acknowledges the fact that real knowledge is produced in thesehighly-structured and artificial experimental settings. She does, however, question the tendency within this discipline to dismiss the significance of the social and cultural setting of the formalpsychological experiment, and argues that the field promotes a truncated view of the human subject and its capacities"--

    Kurzfassung: In Atmospheric Noise, Marina Peterson traces entanglements of environmental noise, atmosphere, sense, and matter that cohere in and through encounters with airport noise since the 1960s. Exploring spaces shaped by noise around Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), she shows how noise is a way of attuning toward the atmospheric: through noise we learn to listen to the sky and imagine the permeability of bodies and matter, sensing and conceiving that which is diffuse, indefinite, vague, and unformed. In her account, the "atmospheric" encompasses the physicality of the ephemeral, dynamic assemblages of matter as well as a logic of indeterminacy. It is audible as well as visible, heard as much as breathed. Peterson develops a theory of "indefinite urbanism" to refer to marginalized spaces of the city where concrete meets sky, windows resonate with the whine of departing planes, and endangered butterflies live under flight paths. Offering a conceptualization of sound as immanent and non-objectified, she demonstrates ways in which noise is central to how we know, feel, and think atmospherically

    Kurzfassung: Die interaktionsanalytische Studie untersucht das Handeln der Lehrperson im Klassenrat. Ziel des Klassenrats ist es, dass die Lernenden diesen möglichst selbständig – d. h. ohne Eingreifen der Lehrperson – durchführen. Dies bringt ein Spannungsverhältnis mit sich, da die Rolle(n) der Schüler*innen und der Lehrperson neu ausgehandelt werden bzw. werden müssen. Die Studie analysiert, was die Lehrperson tut, wenn sie (dennoch) interveniert. Auf der Datengrundlage von 38 Klassenratssitzungen einer Klasse des 5. und 6. Schuljahres werden in zwei analytischen Teilschritten die kommunikativen Lehrpersonenhandlungen eruiert und Wirkungspotenziale dieser Lehrpersonenhandlungen herausgearbeitet. Dennoch wurde seine Technikgeschichte bisher vernachlässigt, obwohl es mit seiner Idee des Leichtbaus anstelle der tonnenschweren Eisenbahn und der Abkehr vom Pferd neue Konstruktionen, Materialien und Fertigungstechniken ins Leben rief, welche die Basis für Motorrad-, Automobil- und Flugzeugbau bildeten. Erst seit dreißig Jahren haben eine internationale Konferenz und die mikrohistorische Feinarbeit der nationalen Vintage-Vereine quellenbasierte Erkenntnisse gesammelt, die einen neuen Blick auf die Fahrradgeschichte ermöglichen. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals eine länderübergreifende und umfassende Darstellung der technischen und historischen Entwicklung des Fahrrads von den frühesten Laufmaschinen als Reitpferdersatz bis hin zu modernen Rennrädern, Mountainbikes und Liegerädern.     Kurzfassung: There is a palpable tension between the planning and implementation of climate targets, for instance as regards renewable energy resources - among which wind power plays a significant role. This tension comes to the fore when assessing the effectiveness of spatial planning approaches to the deployment of wind energy. Planning approaches to wind power are evaluated in three European urbanised regions: South Holland (Netherlands), Lower Austria (Austria) and East Flanders (Belgium). Each region has adopted wind energy targets and introduced zoned areas in its regional planning agenda. The theory of ‘new institutionalism’ and the comparative case study method are the two pillars of this investigation. Zoning may be considered as a form of institutional design, for the introduction of zoned areas not only determines the territorial spread of wind turbines, but also configures socio-organisational entities and actors involved in implementation (developers, local residents, consultants, and public authorities). The comparative approach demonstrates that planning choices in the three case studies often yield to the concerns of higher governance levels, clearly prioritising energy policy goals above local, contextual values. In consequence, ‘zones for wind energy’ do not always gain public acceptance at the local level. Indeed, the foundation for locally supported wind energy zones is laid down in the planning process itself. This process has the potential to institutionalise a trade-off between collective purposes at a higher governance level and locally changing contexts and values. On the other hand, planning agents need to be more aware of path dependencies in spatial decisions concerning renewable energy. One of the wider implications of the planning approaches studied is that they restrict, rather than promote development. Thus, when zoned areas had to be redrawn, local opposition or ‘unwillingness’ seriously restricted the amount of leeway for reaching a consensus about alternative locations. The reason was that the formal planning exercise (zoning wind energy) implied more than an impartial territorial designation: it also communicated social consensus on land-use decisions of ´where wind turbines would come´ and ´where they would not´

    Kurzfassung: Cities and regions play a fundamental role in the transition from a linear to a circular economy, as they are responsible for key policies in local public services such as transport, solid waste, water and energy that affect citizens’ well-being, economic growth and environmental quality. This synthesis report builds on the findings from 51 cities and regions contributing to the OECD Survey on the Circular Economy in Cities and Regions and on lessons learnt from the OECD Policy Dialogues on the circular economy carried out in Groningen (Netherlands), Umeå (Sweden), Valladolid (Spain) and on-going in Glasgow (United Kingdom), Granada (Spain), and Ireland. The report provides a compendium of circular economy good practices, obstacles and opportunities, analysed through the lens of its 3Ps analytical framework (people, policies and places). It concludes with policy recommendations, a Checklist for Action and a Scoreboard to self-assess the existence and level of implementation of enabling governance conditions to foster the transition towards the circular economy in cities and regions.

    Kurzfassung: In the face of megatrends such as globalisation, climate and demographic change, digitalisation and urbanisation, many cities and regions are grappling with critical challenges to preserve social inclusion, foster economic growth and transition to the low carbon economy. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set the global agenda for the coming decade to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. A Territorial Approach to the Sustainable Development Goals argues that cities and regions play a critical role in this paradigm shift and need to embrace the full potential of the SDGs as a policy tool to improve people’s lives. The report estimates that at least 105 of the 169 SDG targets will not be reached without proper engagement of sub-national governments. It analyses how cities and regions are increasingly using the SDGs to design and implement their strategies, policies and plans; promote synergies across sectoral domains; and engage stakeholders in policy making. The report proposes an OECD localised indicator framework that measures the distance towards the SDGs for more than 600 regions and 600 cities in OECD and partner countries. The report concludes with a Checklist for Public Action to help policy makers implement a territorial approach to the SDGs.

    Kurzfassung: "The contributors treat planning as a set of critical cultural acts that are both controversial and, in many cases, contested. Planning-and, as this volume places in focus, planners-can then be considered in relation to the social dynamics of the contexts in which they operate: in the planning office, on construction sites, in sometimes violent confrontations with those at whom they are directed. What roles do planners have in shaping the social dimensions and daily practices of urban life? How do they employ, manipulate, and reshape the expertise assigned to them for that purpose? The essays here critically examine what planners' persistent commitment to thinking about the future means for the ways in which people live in the present and represent and preserve the past. We are particularly concerned with the social contexts in which planners produce their work, including their cultural values, personal assumptions, social pressures, and beyond"--

    Kurzfassung: Alesia Montgomery's Greening the Black Urban Regime: The Culture and Commerce of Sustainability in Detroit tells the story of the struggle to shape green redevelopment in Detroit. Cultural workers, envisioning a green city crafted by direct democracy, had begun to draw idealistic young newcomers to Detroit's street art and gardens. Then a billionaire developer and private foundations hired international consultants to redesign downtown and to devise a city plan. Using the justice-speak of cultural workers, these consultants did innovative outreach, but they did not enable democratic deliberation. The Detroit Future City plan won awards, and the new green venues in the gentrified downtown have gotten good press. However, low-income black Detroiters have little ability to shape "greening" as uneven development unfolds and poverty persists.

    Kurzfassung: Dejan Petkov explores the tramway renaissance in Western Europe from a socio-technical standpoint and focuses on the development in Germany, France, and England. A multiple case analysis reveals the drivers, impact forces, actors and interest constellations behind the tramway renaissance in these countries and demonstrates the large variations in local systems and their style. A key finding is that there can be quite different paths to the success of tramway systems, but this success usually comes at a cost and can have a comprehensive character only if the systems are considered an integral part of the overarching strategies and concepts for urban and regional development.     Kurzfassung: Die etwa 2.000 Klein- und Mittelstädte in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ein wichtiger Bestandteil unseres Siedlungsnetzes. In ihnen lebt etwa die Hälfte der Einwohner des Landes. Zentrale Herausforderungen der Stadterneuerung in ihnen, wie der Strukturwandel in Handel und Gewerbe, der Verfall überkommener historischer Substanz, die Zunahme von Leerständen und Problemimmobilien und die allgemein sinkende Vitalität, werden häufig nicht aktiv genug bearbeitet. Vielerorts gibt es zwar sehr aktive Bürger*innen, die sich in Vereinen und informellen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerken organisieren und intensiv in die Stadtentwicklung einbezogen werden wollen, doch Perspektivlosigkeit, Überalterung und Nachwuchsmangel und der Mangel an Ressourcen begrenzen oft ihre Möglichkeiten deutlich. Obwohl in den einzelnen Kommunen ein großer Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz über neue Verfahren und Instrumente der Stadterneuerung vorhanden ist, sind gute Beispiele aus Klein- und Mittelstädten häufig wenig bekannt und wurden bisher nur in Ansätzen wissenschaftlich untersucht. Hier setzt der vorliegende Band mit seinem inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Situation der Stadterneuerung in Klein- und Mittelstädten an. Neben eher grundsätzlichen Beiträgen widmet er sich auch Erfahrungen aus der Praxis in ganz unterschiedlichen Förderkontexten. Die Herausgebenden Dr.-Ing. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Planungstheorie an der Universität Kassel. Dr.-Ing. Detlef Kurth ist Professor für Stadtplanung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dr.-Ing. Ronald Kunze ist Fachautor für Städtebau, Stadtentwicklung, Stadterneuerung und Wohnungspolitik. Dr.-Ing. Holger Schmidt ist Professor für Stadtumbau und Ortserneuerung an der TU Kaiserslautern. Dipl.-Ing. Gisela Schmitt ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl Planungstheorie und Stadtentwicklung der RWTH Aachen.

    Kurzfassung: Metalle schleifen und polieren in der Antike – Alte Quellen und neue Experimente. Seit der Mensch seine Werkzeuge und Jagdwaffen herstellen kann, hat er sie auch geschliffen. Nach den ersten Werkstoffen Knochen, Geweih und Holz stellten später die Metalle besondere Anforderungen. Rohgüsse von Schmuck und Geräten sowie geschmiedete Werkzeuge und Waffen mussten überschliffen, Schneiden und Klingen geschärft und Oberflächen aus ästhetischen Gründen auch poliert werden. Welche Schleif- und Poliermittel die Handwerker der Antike hierfür verwendeten, ist kaum bekannt; die schriftlichen Quellen sind rar, und archäologische Befunde schwer zu erkennen und zu dokumentieren. Dieses Buch stellt zusammen, welche Abrasivmaterialien dem frühen Handwerk zur Verfügung standen, wo die Rohstoffe zu finden und wie die Materialien aufzubereiten sind. Die antiken Autoren, die diese Materialien erwähnten, werden zitiert, und mit Experimenteller Archäologie hat der Autor die Tauglichkeit und Effizienz aller Schleifgeräte, Schleifmittel und Polierstoffe getestet
