    Kurzfassung: "Uncontrollable Women is a history of radical, reformist and revolutionary women between the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 and the passing of the Great Reform Act in 1832. Very few of them are well-known today; some were unknown even in their own day. All of them contributed something to the world we now inhabit. At a time when women were supposed to leave politics to men they spoke, wrote, marched, organised, asked questions, challenged power structures, sometimes went to prison and even died. History has not usually been kind to them, and they have frequently been pushed into asides or footnotes, dismissed as secondary, or spoken over, for, or through by men and sometimes other women. In this book, they take centre stage in both their own stories and those of others, and in doing so bring different voices to the more familiar accounts of the period. These women and many others played a part in developing political ideas and freedoms as we know them today, and some fought battles which still remain to be won or raised questions that are still unresolved. These are their stories"--

    Kurzfassung: "The Green City and Social Injustice examines the recent urban environmental trajectory of twenty-one cities in Europe and North America over a 20 year period. It analyses the circumstances under which greening interventions can create a new set of inequalities for socially vulnerable residents while also failing to eliminate other environmental risks and impacts. Based on fieldwork in ten countries, and on analysis of core planning, policy, and activist documents and data, the book offers a critical view of the growing green planning orthodoxy in the Global North. It highlights the entanglements of this tenet with neoliberal municipal policies including budget cuts for community initiatives, long-term green spaces, and housing for the most fragile residents; and the focus on large-scale urban redevelopment and high-end real estate investment. It also discusses hopeful experiences from cities where urban greening has long been accompanied by social equity policies or managed by community groups organizing around environmental justice goals and strategies. The book examines how displacement and gentrification in the context of greening is not only physical, but also socio-cultural, creating new forms of social erasure and trauma for vulnerable residents. Its breadth and diversity allow students, scholars, and researchers to debunk the often-depoliticized branding and selling of green cities and reinsert core equity and justice issues into green city planning - a much-needed perspective. Building from this critical view, the book also shows how cities who prioritise equity in green access, in secure housing, and in bold social policies can achieve both environmental and social gains for all"--

    Kurzfassung: "In Central Europe, limited success in revisiting the role of science in the segregation of Roma reverberates with the yet-unmet call for contextualizing the impact of ideas on everyday racism. This book attempts to interpret such a gap as a case of epistemic injustice. It underscores the historical role of ideas in race-making and provides analytical lenses for exploring cross-border transfers of whiteness in Central Europe. In the case of Roma, the scientific argument in favor of segregation continues to play an outstanding role due to a long-term focus on the limited educability of Roma. The authors trace the long-term interrelation between racializing Roma and the adaptation by Central European scholars of theories legitimizing segregation against those considered non-white, conceived as unable to become educated or "civilized." Along with legitimizing segregation, sterilization and even extermination, theorizing ineducability has laid the groundwork for negating the capacity of Roma as subjects of knowledge. Such negation has hindered practices of identity and quite literally prevented Roma in Central Europe from becoming who they are. This systematic epistemic injustice still echoes in contemporary attempts to historicize Roma in Central Europe. The authors critically investigate contemporary approaches to historicize Roma as reproducing whiteness and inevitably leading to various forms of epistemic injustice. The methodological approach herein conceptualizes critical whiteness as a practice of epistemic justice targeted at providing a sustainable platform for reflecting upon the impact of the past on the contemporary situation of Roma."--

    Kurzfassung: Opening up the dialogue between popular music studies and aging studies, this book offers a major exploration of age and popular music across Europe. Using a variety of methods to illustrate how age within popular music is contingent and compelling, the volume explores how it provokes curation and devotion across a variety of sites and artists who record in several European languages, and genres including waltz music, electronica, pop, folk, rap, and the French 'chanson.' Visiting the many ways in which age is problematized, revered, and performed within Europe in relation to popular music, case studies analyze: French touring shows of popular music stars from the 1960s; Andre Rieu's annual Vrijthof concerts in the Netherlands; Kraftwerk and Bjoerk's appearances at renowned art museums as curated objects; queer approaches to popular music space and time; British folk music inheritances; pan-European strategies of stardom and career longevity; and inheritance and post-colonial hauntings of race and identity. The book works with the notion of travelling, across borders, genres, sexualities, and media, highlighting the visibility of the aging body across a variety of European sites in order to establish popular music through the lens of age as a positive methodology with which to approach popular music cultures, and to offer a counter-narrative to age as decline. This book will appeal to scholars of popular music, popular culture, media studies, cultural studies, aging studies, and cultural gerontology

    Kurzfassung: "Since the 1990s, biometric border control has attained key importance throughout Europe. Employing digital images of, for example, fingerprints, DNA, bones, faces or irises, biometric technologies use bodies to identify, categorize, and regulate individuals' cross-border movements. Based on innovative collaborative fieldwork, this book examines how biometrics are developed, put to use and negotiated in key European border sites. It analyses the disparate ways in which the technologies are applied, perceived and experienced by border control agents and others managing the cross-border flow of people, by scientists and developers engaged in making the technologies, and by migrants and NGOs attempting to manoeuvre in the complicated and often unpredictable systems of technological control. Biometric technologies are promoted by national and supra-national authorities and industry as scientifically exact and neutral methods of identification and verification, and as an infallible solution to security threats. The ethnographic case studies in this volume demonstrate, however, that the technologies are, in fact, characterized by considerable ambiguity and uncertainty, and subject to substantial subjective interpretation, translation and brokering with different implications for migrants, border guards, researchers and other actors engaged in the border world"--

    Kurzfassung: Long description: Bevölkerungspolitik hat sich seit der UN-Bevölkerungs-Konferenz in Kairo 1994 grundlegend verändert. Geburtensteuernde Zwangsmaßnahmen wurden offiziell abgeschafft und selbstbestimmte Fortpflanzung auf die Grundlage von Menschenrechten gestellt. Allerdings sind auch die hier zugrunde liegenden Konzepte nicht frei von normativen Prämissen in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Sexualität, Ethnie und Gesundheit. Franziska Schutzbach stellt in ihrer Untersuchung - in deren Zentrum die Adaption der UN-Agenda im europäischen Kontext steht - heraus, dass die gegenwärtige Essenzialisierung der Generativität im Rahmen einer heteronormativen Zweigeschlechtlichkeit zentral für die Reproduktion der herrschenden Gesellschafts- und Geschlechterverhältnisse ist

    Kurzfassung: "In Refuge beyond Reach, David Scott FitzGerald traces the origin and development of the practices deployed by governments to deter asylum seekers from the 1970s to the present. FitzGerald draws on official government documents, information obtained via WikiLeaks and FOIA requests from the CIA, and interviews with asylum seekers to systematically analyze the policies associated with the remote control of asylum seekers. He shows how the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia comply with the letter of law while violating the spirit of those laws through a range of remote control practices: the dome, the moat, the buffer, the cage, and the barbican. Remote control flourishes in secrecy behind the closed doors of consulates and airport terminals and in the anonymity of the seas and remote border regions. These policies may violate law, but Fitzgerald identifies some pressure points. Bilateral relationships, an autonomous judiciary enforcing rights, and oversight by transnational civil society watchdogs can temper the worst abuses"--

The volume challenges some of the myths surrounding the Roma as a 'problem population', and places the focus instead on the context of European policy and identity debates. It comes to the conclusion that the migration of Roma and the constitution of their communities is shaped by European policy as much as and often more so than by the cultural traits of the Roma themselves. The chapters compare case studies of Roma migrants in Spain, Italy, France, and Britain, and the impact of migration on the origin communities in Romania.     Kurzfassung: "Gendering Modernism offers a critical reappraisal of the modernist movement, asking how gender norms of the time shaped the rebellion of the self-avowed modernists and examining the impact of radical gender reformers on modernism. Focusing primarily on the connections between North American and European modernists, Maria Bucur explains why it is imperative that we consider the gender angles of modernism as a way to understand the legacies of the movement. She provides an overview of the scholarship on modernism and an analysis of how definitions of modernism have evolved with that scholarship. Interweaving vivid case studies from before the Great War to the interwar period--looking at individual modernists from Ibsen to Picasso, Hannah Höch to Josephine Baker--she covers various fields such as art, literature, theatre and film, whilst also demonstrating how modernism manifested itself in the major social-political and cultural shifts of the 20th century, including suffragist feminism, psychology, sexology, eugenics, nudism, anarchism, communism and fascism.     Kurzfassung: "Europe Un-Imagined examines one of the world's first and only trans nationally produced television channels, Association relative à la télévision européenne (ARTE). ARTE calls itself the "European culture channel" and was launched in 1991 with a French-German intergovernmental mandate to produce television and other media that promoted pan-European community and culture. Damien Stankiewicz's ground-breaking ethnographic study of the various contexts of media production work at ARTE (the newsroom, the editing studio, the screening room), reveals how ideas about French, German, and European culture coalesce and circulate at the channel. He argues that the reproduction of nationalism often goes unacknowledged and unremarked upon, and questions whether something like a European "imagination" can be produced. Stankiewicz describes the challenges that ARTE staff face, including rapidly changing media technologies and audiences, unreflective national stereotyping, and unwieldy bureaucratic infrastructure, which ultimately limit the channel's abilities to cultivate a transnational, "European" public. Europe Un-Imagined challenges its readers to find new ways of thinking about how people belong in the world beyond the problematic logics of national categorization."--

Sie wurden aber bislang kaum wissenschaftlich untersucht - ebenso wenig wie ihre Kooperationsnetzwerke.Die Beiträge des Bandes schließen diese Forschungslücke und zeigen, welche Organisationen in Griechenland, Italien, Malta, Spanien und Zypern aktiv sind, wie sie arbeiten und welchen Beitrag sie zur Aufnahme und Integration von Schutzsuchenden leisten können
    Kurzfassung: The federal and civic organizations concerned with refugee protection and asylum have played an important part in the Mediterranean region for decades when it comes to taking in people seeking protection. However, they have hardly been scientifically examined yet - and neither have their cooperation networks.     Kurzfassung: Long description: A rapid development of religious popular cultures and lifestyles can be observed across the globe. This book provides unique case studies from Asia and Europe illustrating new religious practices, forms of articulation and mass mediatization, all of which render religious traditions significant for contemporary issues and concerns. The essays examine experiences of spirituality in combination with commercialization and expressive performative practices as well as everyday politics of identity. Based on innovative theoretical reflections, the essays take into consideration what the transcultural negotiation of religion, tradition and the popular signifies in different places and social contexts. With contributions by Anthony Reid, Hubert Knoblauch, Ariel Heryanto, Stefanie von Schnurbein and others.

    Kurzfassung: Ein sogenannter "Tippelbruder" oder "Berber" wird von der Autorin auf seinen Wanderungen entlang der Mosel begleitet und befragt. Er erzählt von seinem Verhältnis zu den Ortschaften und ihren Menschen, die er auf seiner Wanderschaft aufsucht oder trifft. Er macht unterschiedliche Erfahrungen, die ihn insgesamt als Lebenskünstler mit Optimismus zeigen. So entsteht ein Bild eines ungewöhnlichen Mannes, zugleich aber auch das einer Region mit seinen Menschen, gesehen mit den Augen eines Postkarten-Wander-Malers.
    Kurzfassung: A homeless man who lives in the Mosel valley wandering along the river talks to the author about his life experiences and life-style. He meets many people in the villages and comes across very different attitudes towards him. He appears as a man content with the life he leads, and he gives us his view of the people and scenery in the Mosel valley, seen through the eyes of an itinerant post-card artist.

    Kurzfassung: Diese Studie betrachtet die Konfiguration und wechselseitige Hervorbringung von nationalen Selbstverständnissen und Geschlechter- bzw. Sexualitätskonzepten im post-sozialistischen Polen. Aus der Perspektive der politischen Anthropologie werden die sich überlappenden, verschränkten und verknoteten Diskurse, Redeweisen, Referenzrahmen und Aktionen nachgezeichnet, die von unterschiedlichen Akteurinnen und Akteuren innerhalb und außerhalb Polens bestimmt sind. Dabei geht es um die Neuverhandlung nicht nur nationaler Konzepte, sondern auch neuer kultureller Möglichkeitsräume und Subjektivitäten im spannungsreichen Feld von nationaler, europäischer und feministischer Politik

    Kurzfassung: Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm reflektiert Besonderheiten eines Aufeinandertreffens westafrikanischer und europäisch/westlicher Kultur. Er stellt Westeuropäer vor, die einige Jahre in Westafrika lebten, zeigt Straßensituationen, erzählt Begebenheiten, sammelt Materialien und Eindrücke von den Reisen der Filmemacherin nach Ghana, Benin und in den Senegal. Gisa, die mit ihrer Tochter Madita mehrere Jahre in Burkina Faso lebte, beschreibt Momente der Nähe und Fremdheit dort. Vertrautes zeigt sich im fremden Umfeld manchmal grotesk, manchmal poetisiert. Bilder und Motive möglicher Faszination und Sehnsucht nach dem Anderen kontrastieren mit der Frage, ob ein Kontakt zur Fremde überhaupt möglich ist. Der Film ist auf Super-8 und Mini-DV gedreht. Durch die Materialwirkungen und den Wechsel von Momentaufnahmen und aus der Zeit gehobenen bildhaften Einstellungen entsteht gelegentlich ein schwebender Zustand zwischen Vorstellung und konkretem Alltag.
    Kurzfassung: The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.

    Kurzfassung: Das Leben der Moorkolonisten, die abseits der Wasserstraßen in den abgelegenen Mooren Ostfrieslands siedelten, war erbärmlich. Der desolate Zustand der Wege schnitt sie im Herbst und Winter von der Außenwelt ab, vor ihren Hütten türmte sich übermannshoch das Moor auf. Die lebensfeindlichen Bedingungen werden greifbar, wenn sich die Protagonisten an die kleinen Kolonistenhäuser erinnern, in denen sie Tür an Tür mit Schaf und Ziege lebten; wenn sie berichten, wie mühselig es war, das Moor Meter für Meter abzutorfen und das neue Land zu kultivieren; wenn sie uns zeigen, wo immer wieder die Pferde eingesackt sind, wenn sie die mit Torf beladenen Wagen aus dem Moor ziehen sollten. Bei diesen Erzählern handelt es sich um die letzte Generation derjenigen, die wie ihre Vorfahren direkt am Moor siedelten und einen Eindruck davon hinterlassen können, was es heißt, ein Kolonist zu sein.
    Kurzfassung: The life of the moor colonists who settled beyond the waterways in the outlying moors of East Frisia was miserable. The desolate condition of the paths isolated them from the outside world in fall and winter, in front of their huts the moor towered head-high. These hostile conditions become tangible when the protagonists remember their small houses where they lived door to door with sheep and goats, when they tell how arduous it was to harvest the peat meter by meter and to cultivate the land; when they show us the places where the horses used to be bogged down with their turf loaded waggons. The protagonists belong to the last generation of settlers who colonized the moor like their ancestors and who can give us an idea of what it means to be a colonist.

    Kurzfassung: Der Autor porträtiert seinen Onkel Hadsch Taghi, einen alten Basarhändler in Borujerd, West-Iran. Nach einem Verkehrsunfall muß der alte Mann, der Patriarch der Familie, die Geschäfte vorübergehend seinen Söhnen überlassen. Diese erzählen von den beruflichen und familiären Problemen, die sie zu Zeiten, in denen traditionelle Vorstellungen durch moderne abgelöst werden, bewältigen müssen.
    Kurzfassung: This film is a portrait of the filmmaker's uncle, the patriarch Haj Taghi, an old bazaar shoe merchant in Borujerd, Western Iran. After a car accident he had to hand over business to his sons. They talk about the economic and family problems, many of them resulting from the changes from traditional to modern values in contemporary Iranian society.

    Kurzfassung: Die Moore Ostfrieslands sind abgetorft - das Land präsentiert sich kultiviert. Dennoch: Nahezu alle Ostfriesen verbindet noch immer eine ganz besondere Beziehung zu dem Stoff, der ihr Land einstmals meterhoch bedeckte. Ob Liebe oder Hass: Das Moor hat die Mentalität der Ostfriesen geprägt wie sonst vielleicht nur das Wasser. Auch wenn der Kampf mit dem Moor keine Existenzen mehr beeinflusst, so sind die Spuren, die er hinterlassen hat, doch weiterhin sichtbar: In den Tradierungen, den Geschichten, Legenden und Erinnerungen der Menschen. Und vor allem in den Symbolen des Torfgrabens: Der "Tweekrieger", der "Sticker" und die Torfkarre. Diese Arbeitsgeräte rufen bei wohl jedem Ostfriesen mit starken Emotionen besetzte Assoziationen hervor. Bei diesem Filmprojekt stehen die Erinnerungen an eine Arbeit im Mittelpunkt, die noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten das Leben der Ostfriesen bestimmte wie keine andere.
    Kurzfassung: East Friesland's moors nowadays are cutaway bogs. The landscape is cultivated. Still, most East Frisians have a special connection with the stuff that once covered their land meters high. For love or hate: the moor has shaped the East Frisians' mentality like probably only the water was able to. Even if the rigours with the moor do not influence any livelihoods, the traces it left are still visible: in the traditions, stories, legends, peoples' memories. And above all in the symbols of cutting peat: the "Tweekieger", the "Sticker" and the peat kart. For their associations, these tools still arouse strong emotions in any East Frisian. This film project focuses on the memories of a work that only a few decades ago determined the lives of East Frisians like no other.

    Kurzfassung: Sorbe ist, wer sich als Sorbe bekennt - so die offizielle Definition der sorbischen Minderheit, festgeschrieben in der sächsischen Landesverfassung. Weder Abstammung noch Sprache sind entscheidend: Was zählt, ist das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl, die Selbst-Definition. "Sorbe sein - Sorbe bleiben" erzählt aus der Sicht "bekennender" sorbischer Jugendlicher aus Bautzen davon, was es eigentlich bedeutet, sorbisch zu sein. Die sorbische Sprache zu sprechen, an der sorbischen Kultur teilzuhaben, der katholische Glaube, der Wunsch und die Schwierigkeit, einen sorbischen Partner zu finden - all das sind Bausteine einer sorbischen Identität, die alles andere als einheitlich ist und die sich neben und innerhalb der deutschen Identität behaupten muss. Für die Jugendlichen geht "sorbisch sein" weit darüber hinaus, an sorbischen Traditionen wie dem Osterreiten oder einer Trachtentanzgruppe teilzunehmen - ein sorbisches Kabarett oder eine sorbische Jugendgruppe, die Feten, Veranstaltungen und der Austausch mit anderen Minderheiten, zeugen davon.
    Kurzfassung: A Sorb is anybody who claims to be a Sorb - thus the official definition of the Sorbian minority, as it is codified in the Saxonian Constitution. Neither genealogy nor language matter, decisive is the feeling of belonging, the self-definition. The film tells its story from the angle of Sorbian youths from Bautzen, telling us what it means to be a Sorb. To speak the Sorbian language, to share the Sorbian culture, the Catholic faith, the desire and difficulty to find a Sorbian spouse - all these are elements of a Sorbian identity which is all but uniform and has to prove itself inside the German identity. For Sorbian youths "to be a Sorb" goes far beyond practising the Sorbian traditions like Easter riding or attending folklore groups - a Sorbian cabaret, a Sorbian youth group, their parties, events and the cooperation with other minorities bear witness to this.

    Kurzfassung: Das Unternehmen erscheint ungeheuerlich: Spatenstich für Spatenstich, Meter für Meter, Tag für Tag, Jahr für Jahr gruben sich die ostfriesischen Fehntjer ins unendliche Moor, um es dann auf ihren kleinen Torfschiffen in die nahegelegenen Städte zu verschiffen; von dort brachten sie Stallmist, Fäkalien der Städter und Sand aus der Ems zur Kultivierung der abgetorften Moorfläche mit. Alles per Hand. Die Kanäle wurden zu den Straßen Ostfrieslands und die Schiffe mit ihren Besatzungen zum Inbegriff von Mobilität, zum weithin sichtbaren Symbol für Beweglichkeit und Freiheit. Im Film wird dieses Bild zurechtgerückt: Die Fehntjer präsentieren sich in ihrem unermüdlichen Kampf als Idealtyp der Menschheitsgeschichte - gegen jede Unbill ankämpfend machen sie sich ihre Umwelt zur Heimat - nach ihrem Bilde. Eine Landschaft, die sich uns heute adrett, aufgeräumt und als "typischer" ostfriesischer Naturraum präsentiert, erscheint so in einem anderen Licht.
    Kurzfassung: The operation seems monstrous: spade by spade, meter by meter, day after day, year after year the East Frisian 'Fehntjer' dug the endless moor to ship the peat to nearby towns in their little peat ships. In order to cultivate the cutaway bogs, they brought back dung, town-dwellers' faeces and sand from the river Ems. All by hand. The channels became the East Frisian roads, and along with them the ships and their crew became the quintessence of mobility, the evident symbol of freedom. In the film this impression is adjusted. In their tireless struggle the 'Fehntjer' present themselves as the ideal type of mankind. Fighting against any rigours, they make their land their homeland - formed after their image. A landscape that nowadays seems to be smart, neat, tidy, the "typical" East Frisian natural landscape appears in another light.
