    Abstract: This landmark book provides a comprehensive anthropological introduction to contemporary Central Asia. Established and emerging scholars of the region critically interrogate the idea of a 'Central Asian World' at the intersection of post-Soviet, Persianate, East and South Asian worlds. Encompassing chapters on life between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Xinjiang, this volume situates the social, political, economic, ecological and ritual diversity of Central Asia in historical context. The book ethnographically explores key areas such as the growth of Islamic finance, the remaking of urban and sacred spaces, as well as decolonizing and queering approaches to Central Asia. The volume's discussion of More-than-Human Worlds, Everyday Economies, Material Culture, Migration and Statehood engages core analytical concerns such as globalization, inequality and postcolonialism. Far more than a survey of a 'world region', the volume illuminates how people in Central Asia make a life at the intersection of diverse cross-cutting currents and flows of knowledge.     Abstract: "Argonauts of West Africa examines the paradoxes of kinship in the lives of unauthorized African migrants as they struggle for mobility, employment, and citizenship in Europe. In a rapidly changing and highly precarious context, migrants turn to kinship in search of security, stability, and predictability. Through the exchange of identity documents, assistance in obtaining such documentation, marriage, or cohabitation, new kinship dynamics are continually made and remade to navigate the shifting demands of European states. These new kinship relations, however, often prove unreliable, taking on new, unexpected dynamics in the face of codependency; they become more difficult to control than those who entered into such relations could have imagined. Through unusually close ethnographic work in West African migrant communities in Amsterdam, Apostolos Andrikopoulos reveals unseen dynamics of "siblinghood" through shared papers, the tensions of race and gender that develop in mutually beneficial marriages, and the vast, informal networks of people, information, and documentation on which migrants rely. Throughout, Andrikopoulos demonstrates how inequality, exclusionary practices, and the changing policies of an often-violent state demand new forms of kinship to successfully navigate complex migration routes"--

    Abstract: Theories and opinions about climate change abound - from those claiming that human-induced climate change is already beyond control to those who express scepticism about the real extent of these changes. How should we weigh up the scientific evidence, and what role does climate change play in the history of the Earth? In this comprehensive history of the climate and climate change, Antonello Provenzale explains how the planetary climate system works and how the climate has evolved over millions of years. Starting from the catastrophic events that marked the early history of the Earth, including seas of magma, global glaciations and mass extinctions, he shows that the climate has fluctuated between hot and cold periods: at certain times, the Earth was hot and lush with forests, while at others it was almost entirely covered by a thick layer of ice. The mechanisms that determine the modifications of the climate are multiple and complex and include external factors, such as solar luminosity and variations in the Earth's orbit, as well as internal processes connecting the atmosphere, the oceans, the crust, the mantle and the biosphere, which comprises living organisms. While the climate has fluctuated a great deal in the long history of the Earth, there are two features of our current situation that are a source of real concern. First, the rise in temperature of the last 50 years has been extremely fast, making it difficult for the environment to adapt to the new conditions. Second, the human population is much greater than it was in the past, and this population needs water, food, energy and shelter to survive. If temperatures continue to rise as they have in recent decades, ours will not be an easy world in which to live. To appreciate what is at stake we need to understand how the climate works and how human activity is affecting it - not in order to save the planet, which will do just fine on its own and probably better without us, but to save ourselves.

    Abstract: This book explores continuity and ruptures in the historical use of visual representations in science and related disciplines such as art history and anthropology. The book also considers more recent developments that attest to the unprecedented importance of scientific visualizations, such as video recordings, animations, simulations, graphs, and enhanced realities. The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.

Erasing the relational models of ecology that form the basis of Indigenous environmental knowledge, the emergent discipline of data science-born specifically from the desire to quantify weather-instead reproduced the natural world and natural phenomena as a set of isolated objects to be measured, owned, and exploited. Immeasurable Weather explores the relationship between climate data and state power in key moments in the history of American weather science: the public data-gathering practices of settler farmers and teachers in the 19th century that would later form the basis of the United States Weather Bureau; the centrality of women to data collection and computation, particularly through the Smithsonian Meteorological Project; the automation of weather data in the Dust Bowl of the early 20th century; and, finally, the role of meteorological satellites in data science's formal integration into American "military-meteorological nation-state structures.""--

    Abstract: Documenting Impossible Realities explores the limitations of conventional accounts through which belonging is documented, focusing on the experiences of adoptees, deportees, migrants, and other exilic populations. Susan Bibler Coutin and Barbara Yngvesson speak to the current historical moment, in which the dichotomy between an "above ground" inhabited by dominant groups and an "underground" to which unauthorized immigrants, political exiles, and transnational adoptees are relegated cannot be sustained. This dichotomy was made possible by the illusion that some people don't belong, that some forms of kin are not real, or that certain ways of knowing do not count. To examine accounts that challenge such illusions, Coutin and Yngvesson focus on the spaces between groups, where difference is constituted and where the potential for new forms of relationship may be realized. By juxtaposing and moving between entangled realities and modes of expression, Documenting Impossible Realities conveys the emotional experience of oscillating between being here and gone, legitimate and treated as counterfeit

    Abstract: Who owns the past? Are museum archives and their re-collections of cultural heritage a cult of the dead — and if so, are we living in a necropolis? This book on photography, cemeteries, and the archive evolved out of an experimental research project at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, with its immense collection of canonic photographs from the history of art and architecture. An artist’s book, it takes on the form of a description of an unfinished film in five acts — a cinematic fragment, so to speak: DOPOSTORIA.     Abstract: Im gesellschaftlichen Kontext Württembergs zeichnet das vorliegende Buch exemplarisch für den deutschsprachigen Raum die Entstehung und organisatorische Entfaltung des Tierschutzes im langen 19. Jahrhundert nach. Ausgangspunkt ist die erste kontinentaleuropäische Tierschutzbewegung, die in Württemberg von 1837 bis 1840 in einem breiten öffentlichen Diskurs und organisiert in sechs Vereinen einen Tierschutzparagrafen durchsetzte, bevor sie wieder versandete. Warum gerade zu dieser Zeit ausgerechnet im wirtschaftlich zurückgebliebenen Württemberg der Übergang von tierethischer Reflexion zu zivilgesellschaftlichem Handeln gegen Tierquälerei stattfand, leitet die Studie aus Veränderungen der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse und aus einer geistigen Atmosphäre ab, die gekennzeichnet war von romantischer Empfindsamkeit, Individualismus und Sittenstrenge, verschränkt mit aufgeklärter, sehr praktisch orientierter pietistischer Frömmigkeit. 1862 gelang die Gründung eines dauerhafteren und landesweiten Vereins, dem in den 1890er Jahren noch zwei kleinere folgten: ein Frauenverein und ein Ableger der Antivisektionsbewegung. Das Buch stellt Praxis, Forderungen, tierrechtliche Ansätze, Zielgruppen und soziale Basis aller Vereine ausführlich vor und analysiert Motive und Netzwerke der Protagonist*innen. Dabei werden die Tiere, um die es ging, nicht vergessen: Basierend auf den Quellen der Vereine entfaltet die Studie ein plastisches Panorama der damaligen Lage der Tiere in der menschlichen Gesellschaft, die jeden romantisierenden Rückbezug auf diese Zeit vor der Massentierhaltung Lügen straft. Der Autor Dr. Wolfram Schlenker ist Politikwissenschaftler und Germanist.

Cultures notoriously differ as to the content of their rules, but there is no culture without rules. In this book, historian of science Lorraine Daston adopts a long term perspective for studying rules from diverse sources, including monastic orders, cookbooks, and mathematical algorithms. She argues that in the Western tradition most rules can be characterized as one of the following: tools of measurement and calculation, models or paradigms, or laws. Moreover, they exist on spectra from specific to general, flexible to rigid and the specific-to-general, and universal-to-particular.     Abstract: Der inklusive Freiwilligendienst weltwärts ist eine privilegierte Form der räumlichen Bewegung, die als solche selten Gegenstand der erziehungswissenschaftlichen Migrationsforschung ist. Manuel Peters erkundet aus migrationspädagogischer und rassismuskritischer Perspektive die komplexen Aneignungsweisen rassifizierter Ordnungen innerhalb dieser Mobilität. Mithilfe postkolonialer, macht- und rassismusanalytischer sowie bildungstheoretischer Ansätze zeigt er, wie Aneignungsweisen als spezifische, interaktiv hervorgebrachte und (global-)gesellschaftlich verortete Subjektivierungspraktiken bzw. Bildungsprozesse rekonstruiert werden können. Die weltwärts-Mobilität kann somit als bedeutsamer - postkolonialer - Zugehörigkeitskontext gedeutet werden, in dem sich vorherrschende Differenzordnungen der Migrationsgesellschaft aktualisieren.

    Abstract: This book deepens readers’ knowledge and understanding of the nature of domestic violence and sexual abuse involving male same-sex partners, and of dating violence against gay men and related issues in the European Union (EU). Drawing on non-probability samples, it addresses the propensities of refugees and migrant gay men in Germany and the prevalence of sexual abuse directed toward these men by illustrating their experiences as victims. In closing, the book explores the challenges of identifying sexual abuse victimization within the gay community, as well as the implications for practice, policy, and future research.

    Abstract: In diesem Buch wird der politische Entstehungsprozess des Anerkennungsgesetzes im Rahmen einer detaillierten Policy-Analyse untersucht. Der vermeintliche Widerspruch einer policy, die zu einer sukzessiven Rechtsausweitung für auslandsqualifizierte Migrant*innen führt und dennoch restriktive Elemente beinhaltet oder zur Folge hat, wirft die für diese Studie zentrale Frage auf, inwieweit und warum sich liberale und restriktive Elemente in der Genese des Anerkennungsgesetzes durchsetzen können. Zentrale Einflussfaktoren bilden neben einzelnen Akteur*innen auch strukturelle Rahmenbedingungen des politischen Prozesses sowie die diskursive Einordnung der policy in die gesamtgesellschaftliche Debatte zum Fachkräftemangel. Das komplexe Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Faktoren offenbart ein in Reformprozessen von Migrationspolitik präsentes Spannungsverhältnis zwischen einer stärkeren Öffnung und einer gleichbleibenden Restriktion. Die Autorin Amélie Haag promovierte im Fachbereich Politikwissenschaft an der Universität Hildesheim. Sie studierte Soziologie an der Universität Aix-Marseille in Aix-en-Provence und Europapolitik am Institut d’Études Politiques in Straßburg.

    Abstract: Unter dem Schlagwort »ethnische Ökonomie« wird die berufliche Selbstständigkeit von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund in Politik und Wissenschaft diskutiert. Indem die Selbstständigen ihren »Markt machen«, positionieren sie sich mit dem und gegen diesen Diskurs. Robert Birnbauer zeigt aus einer wirtschaftsanthropologischen Perspektive, wie die Unternehmer*innen dabei ihre gesellschaftlichen Positionen und etablierte ökonomische Wissensbestände gleichermaßen verhandeln. Dazu folgt er dem Diskurs um »ethnische Ökonomie« von der politischen in die unternehmerische Praxis und zeigt: Geschäfte im Markt für muslimische Mode werden zum Resultat gesellschaftlicher Diskurse und der Markt zum Effekt beschreibbarer unternehmerischer Praxis - weit jenseits einer »unsichtbaren Hand«.

    Abstract: "On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence via a makeshift wired loudspeaker system to thousands of listeners in Hanoi. Five days later, Ho's Viet Minh forces set up a clandestine radio station using equipment brought to Southeast Asia by colonial traders. The revolutionaries garnered support for their coalition on air by interspersing political narratives with red music (nhạc đỏ). Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOV) grew from these communist and colonial foundations to become contemporary Vietnam's largest producer of music. In the first comprehensive English-language study on the history of radio music in mainland Southeast Asia, Lonán Ó Briain examines the broadcast voices that reconfigured Vietnam's cultural, social, and political landscape over a century. Ó Briain draws on a year of ethnographic fieldwork at the VOV studios (2016-17), interviews with radio employees and listeners, historical recordings and broadcasts, and archival research in Vietnam, France, and the United States.     Abstract: In der fast 2000 Jahre alten Geschichte der Verschriftlichung des Gottesdienstes der christlichen Kirchen spiegelt sich ein wesentlicher Teil der abendländischen Kultur wieder: Schrift, Malerei, Musik, Buchkunst und gelebte Frömmigkeit in den verschiedenen geschichtlichen Phasen. Bibeln oder Evangeliare waren allgemein zugänglich und stehen auch heute stärker im Fokus historischer Betrachtungen. Das Messbuch und seine Vorgänger entwickelten sich aber als privilegierte Werkzeuge für den Vorsteher des Gottesdienstes und waren in der Regel für das Kirchenvolk nicht zugänglich. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt erstmals eine zusammenfassende, bebilderte Darstellung von der Verschriftlichung der Messe mit dem Blick auf Liturgiegeschichte, Malerei, Musik und Buchkunst. Es zeigt z.B., wie schon Ende des 1. Jahrhunderts das Grundkonzept der frühchristlichen Messe feststeht und welche Bedeutung die karolingischen Reformen für alle angesprochenen Bereiche haben. Es zeigt auch, wie etwa ab dem Jahr 1000 das Messbuch - ab etwa dieser Zeit Missale genannt - immer wieder mit angemessenen Anpassungen und Bereinigungen alle gesellschaftlichen und innerkirchlichen Wirren bis in unserer Tage überstand. Der Autor Prof. Dr. Theo Mang ist Chemiker und Ingenieur, war neben einer Industrietätigkeit Professor an der Fakultät für Maschinenwesen an der RWTH Aachen und ist Autor zahlreicher Fach- und Sachbücher.

    Abstract: Über »Rasse« im Grundgesetz wird derzeit viel gestritten. Ist es ein rassistisches Wort, das es zu ersetzen gilt, oder eine für die Bekämpfung von Diskriminierung notwendige Kategorie? Doris Liebscher geht der Frage historisch, rassismustheoretisch und rechtsdogmatisch auf den Grund. Sie rekonstruiert, wie der Begriff ins Grundgesetz kam, und untersucht, wie Gerichte und Rechtswissenschaft heute das auf »Rasse« bezogene Diskriminierungsverbot aus Artikel 3 GG auslegen. Auch das Recht der DDR sowie europäische, US-amerikanische und weitere internationale Rechtsdebatten unterzieht sie einer kritischen Analyse, um schließlich für ein postkategoriales Antidiskriminierungsrecht zu plädieren: die Ersetzung des Rechtsbegriffs »Rasse« durch »rassistisch«

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.
