Abstract: This book tells the story of how innovative and rival practitioner communities have shaped American diplomacy’s public dimension. It is the fi rst book to frame U.S. public diplomacy in the broad sweep of American diplomatic practice from the early colonial period to the present. “…not only original but also potentially fi eld shifting. This is not simply another good book on American public diplomacy: it will be the book on American public diplomacy.” —Professor Geoffrey Wiseman, DePaul University, U.S.A “American Diplomacy’s Public Dimension, a masterful historical overview of American diplomatic communication, provides fi rst-time insight into the evolution of U.S. public diplomacy from the colonial era to the present day. This book also offers a nuanced assessment of contemporary public diplomacy practices in the face of rapid technological transformation and increasingly ‘societized’ diplomatic engagement. An exceptional blend of public diplomacy scholarship and deep institutional knowledge, this major work will appeal to diplomatic practitioners, professors, and policymakers.” — Vivian S. Walker, Executive Director, U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy “Gregory thinks like an academic while seeing public diplomacy through the lens of the work of the men and women who have put fl esh on the bones of U.S. public diplomacy policies… This book is steeped in deep knowledge and his exceptional dedication to getting our understanding of public diplomacy right.” —Professor Jan Melissen, Editor-in-Chief, The Hague Journal of Diplomacy Bruce Gregory taught graduate and undergraduate courses on public diplomacy at Georgetown University and George Washington University for 17 years. Prior to that, his 33-year government career included positions at the Department of State, U.S. Information Agency, 13 years as executive director of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, and three years on the faculty of the National War College. Publications include peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, public policy reports, and a bimonthly literature review. P.

Abstract: This book is the first English-language monograph about the institutional development of sociology in (North) Macedonia. It maps and discusses the contexts, goals, and merits of the pioneering attempts for sociological research in the interwar period, early post-war educational and publishing politics, the institutionalization of sociology in socialist Macedonia in the course of the 1960s, its cross-national exchanges, as well as its major trajectories and debates up until the present days. Against the backgrounds of the political and intellectual histories of Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav Macedonia, it argues that the development of the sociological activities, themes, and arguments is entwined with the Macedonian nation- and state-building.

Abstract: “How did feminist ideas travel in an age of growing nationalism, imperial powerplay and entrenched inequalities? Feminist Activism, Travel and Translation brilliantly foregrounds the work done by translation, focusing on the first generation of university-educated women. Käthe Schirmacher’s life illustrates the promise and the painful fragility of early feminism. Gehmacher shows the active role translation played in liberal, revolutionary and ultranationalist movements, shaping the new public spheres of this historical moment." –Lucy Delap, Professor of Modern British and Gender History, University of Cambridge, UK "This groundbreaking study examines the transfer of ideas, mediation, and translation as transnational practices of the international women's movement around 1900. The differing expectations of translations and translators as well as Western dominance in transnational communication are convincingly brought out. Gehmacher, the best connoisseur of Käthe Schirmacher's estate, introduces with this book a fresh perspective on the history of the international women's movement." –Angelika Schaser, Professor of Modern History, Universität Hamburg, Germany This open access book takes the biographical case of German feminist Käthe Schirmacher (1865–1930), a multilingual translator, widely travelled writer of fiction and non-fiction, and a disputatious activist to examine the travel and translation of ideas between the women’s movements that emerged in many countries in the late 19th and early 20th century. It discusses practices such as translating, interpreting, and excerpting from journals and books that spawned and supported transnational civic spaces and develops a theoretical framework to analyse these practices. It examines translations of literary, scholarly and political texts and their contexts. The book will be of interest to academics as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of modern history, women’s and gender history, cultural studies, transnational and transfer history, translation studies, history and theory of biography. Johanna Gehmacher is Professor of Modern and Gender History at the University of Vienna, Austria.

Abstract: This open access book critically examines discussions on digitalisation and individual opportunities for socio-economic advancement. Contrary to the prevailing narratives of “digital empowerment” and opportunities for every individual, this book argues that digitalisation massively curtails social advancement opportunities, consolidating existing social relations. From a spatial perspective, Scheffer demonstrates how socially disadvantaged groups are faced with reproducing mechanisms as part of a new data economy. Surprisingly, the more intensively digital services are used, the more this happens. Building on Löw´s sociology of space and Bourdieu´s concept of habitus, this book shows how practices of social exclusion are transferred to the digital present in an innovative way. The image of “mirrored” spaces describes a new mechanism that explains social exclusion in the age of digitalisation. This book is an essential resource for researchers and students interested in socio-economic inequalities, processes of digitalisation, and digital geographies

Abstract: This open access book presents a condensed history of Sociology in Mexico from its origins, through to the middle of the 19th century and up to the present day. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century. Gina Zabludovky is a tenured Professor and Researcher at UNAM, Mexico. She is the author and editor of numerous books, scientific articles, and book chapters on various topics including social and political theory, the history of sociology in Mexico, business organizations and women in decision-making positions. She has received several awards in recognition of her academic achievements.

Abstract: “Karen Mills is one of the foremost experts on our nation’s small businesses and the policies that are central to their growth and vitality. She demonstrates how new technology and smart regulation in Washington can usher in a transformative era for entrepreneurialism and the American Dream. A powerful book.” —Olympia Snowe, Former United States Senator “In this important book, Karen Mills shows how financial innovation can empower small businesses to fulfill their owners’ dreams and push the American economy forward. It will change how you think both about financial innovation and small business. — Larry Summers, Harvard University, President Emeritus; 71st U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and Former Director of the White House National Economic Council “Mills combines sharp analysis with her hands-on experience as a small business advocate to show the dynamic new opportunities that fintech presents. She lays out the promise of technology for small business lending, while providing valuable insights for today’s financial services providers.” — Ken Chenault, Chairman and Managing Director at General Catalyst; Former CEO, American Express Company “For America to lead in this new technological era, we need to continue to nurture our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Mills illustrates how technology can get more access to capital flowing—increasing the chance for more small businesses to grow and prosper.” — Steve Case, Chairman and CEO of Revolution and Co-Founder of AOL “A must-read book for community bankers wondering how best to deliver small business financing in the future.” — Bob Rivers, Chairman and CEO of Eastern Bank “In this book, Karen Mills brings her government and her private sector expertise to bear describing how technology may reinvent the ways small businesses operate and raise capital going forward. Economists, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of small business will benefit from her insights on how the future of fintech and the small business economy will be inextricably linked.” — Austan D. Goolsbee, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, former Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors. Small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. They are the biggest job creators and offer a path to the American Dream. But for many, it is difficult to get the capital they need to operate and succeed. In Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream, former U.S. Small Business Administrator and Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School, Karen G. Mills, focuses on the needs of small businesses for capital and how technology will transform the small business lending market. This is a market that has been plagued by frictions: it is hard for a lender to figure out which small businesses are creditworthy, and borrowers often don’t know how much money or what kind of loan they need. Every small business is different; one day the borrower is a dry cleaner and the next a parts supplier, making it difficult for lenders to understand each business’s unique circumstances. Today, however, big data and artificial intelligence have the power to illuminate the opaque nature of a small business’s finances and make it easier for them access capital to weather bumpy cash flows or to invest in growth opportunities. Beginning in the dark days following the 2008-9 recession and continuing through the crisis of the Covid-19 Pandemic, Mills charts how fintech has changed and will continue to change small business lending. In the new fintech landscape financial products are embedded in applications that small business owners use on daily basis, and data powered algorithms provide automated insights to determine which businesses are creditworthy. Digital challenger banks, big tech and traditional banks and credit card companies are deciding how they want to engage in the new lending ecosystem. Who will be the winners and losers? How should regulators respond? In this pivotal moment, Mills elucidates how financial innovation and wise regulation can restore a path to the American Dream by improving access to small business credit. An ambitious book grappling with the broad significance of small business to the economy, the historical role of credit markets, the dynamics of innovation cycles, and the policy implications for regulation, this second edition of Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream is relevant to bankers, regulators and fintech entrepreneurs and investors; in fact, to anyone who is interested in the future of small business in America. Karen G. Mills was a member of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet and served as the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2009 to2013. She received the U.S. Department of the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award for her contribution to U.S. competitiveness, entrepreneurship, and innovation. She is the President of MMP Group and has a long history of building companies as a venture capital investor. Mills holds an AB in Economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where she currently serves as a Senior Fellow and part of the entrepreneurship faculty. She is a Member of the Harvard Corporation and the Vice Chair of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Mills lives with her husband Barry, former president of Bowdoin College, in Boston and Harpswell, Maine, and they are grateful for their children, grandchildren, and extended loving family. .

Abstract: Will China–U.S. relations come back to the normal track? Does the confrontational approach work for China–US relations? This book argues that it is an unrealistic hope to bring China–US relations back to the so-called normal track because the great power competition will be a new normal of China–US relations and the USA will gain more from strategic competition than cooperation in the long run. This book shows that the strategy of “great power cooperation through competition” is more positive and constructive than the approaches of “peaceful coexist” and “maximum pressure.” This book does not intend to provide policy recommendations for governments to consider, but mainly to explain why the great power competition is inevitable and why it is necessary to continuously work with China in some areas through strategic competition. This book alarms the importance of understanding the nature of the Chinese Communist Party during the great power competition and aims to motivate both sides to revisit their foreign policy practice and come up with a better foreign policy strategy of handling China–US relations. Jinghao Zhou is Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York, USA. His research focuses on Chinese ideology, politics, religions, and US–China relations. He has five books published which are as follows: Why Is the China Model Losing Its Power? (2020), Chinese vs. Western Perspectives: Understanding Contemporary China (2014), China’s Peaceful Rise in a Global Context: A Domestic Aspect of China’s Road Map to Democratization (2010), Remaking China’s Public Philosophy and Chinese Women’s Liberation: The volatile mixing of Confucianism, Marxism, and Feminism (2006), and Remaking China’s Public Philosophy for the Twenty-First Century (2003).

Abstract: “Federman Rodriguez sets out to resolve an intriguing puzzle: How did two countries with so great a disparity of national power, Canada and the United States, come to adopt similar military policies in Afghanistan in 2006-2011? International Relations theory and historical precedent would have predicted otherwise. Rodriguez’s highly readable volume provides a compelling explanation of Canadian and US foreign policy and sheds light on the opportunities and limitations of power in the international system.” --Elinor Sloan, Carleton University, Canada. “Federman Rodriguez adapts the theory of neoclassical realism to explain, despite vastly different capabilities, how Canada and the United States’ foreign and security policy in Afghanistan converged on a counterinsurgency campaign. He provides a theoretically unique and empirically rich analysis of the decisions made by each country. This book is important in understanding what happened to the ill-fated intervention in Afghanistan.” --Brian C. Schmidt, Carleton University, Canada. The book aims to explain the factors that brought about a high degree of similarity between American and Canadian foreign and security policies during the Afghanistan intervention. Specifically, it seeks to explain why, despite their different positions in the international distribution of power, the United States and Canada embraced similar counterinsurgency (COIN) strategies from 2005/2006 to 2011. During this time, the United States and Canada fought against insurgent groups, sought to maintain stabilized areas by mentoring Afghan forces, and invested in infrastructure and governance. These goals, which corresponded to the ‘clear,’ ‘hold,’ and ‘build’ COIN components, entailed sending troops and civilian officials to a war zone and committing financial resources. Federman Rodriguez is Assistant Professor of the Faculty of International Relations, Political and Urban Studies at Rosario University, Bogotá, Colombia.

Abstract: This book investigates the connection between tightening mobilization constraints and the use of PMSCs in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy. Drawing on neoclassical realism and institutionalist theory, it conceptualizes democracies’ use of private military and security companies (PMSCs) as an attempt to circumvent the tightening constraints on the mobilization of military power. The use of private military contractors is less subjected to parliamentary restrictions and less visible to public opinion than the deployment of soldiers. Rather than cheaper in financial terms, PMSCs are therefore politically cost-effective, as they enable decision-makers to minimize the institutional obstacles on conducting military operations and the electoral costs attached thereto. The need to reduce the ex ante hurdles and the ex post costs of military deployments fills the blind spots of alternative explanations for the use of PMSCs based on effectiveness, ideology, and organizational interests. Abstract: This second edition further explores the regulatory landscape of cryptocurrency, highlighting the rise of Bitcoin, which is based on blockchain technology, and some of the many types of coins and tokens that emerged thereafter. Although Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have made national and international news with their dramatic rise and decline in value, nevertheless the underlying technology is being adopted by both industry and governments, which have noted the benefits of speed, cost efficiency, and protection from hacking. Based on numerous downloaded articles, laws, cases, and other materials, the book discusses the digital transformation, the types of cryptocurrencies, key actors, and the benefits and risks. It also addresses legal issues of digital technology and the evolving U.S. federal regulation. The varying treatment by individual U.S. states is reviewed together with attempts by organizations to arrive at a uniform regulatory regime. Both civil and criminal prosecutions are highlighted with an examination of the major cases that have arisen. This second edition specifically explores the creation of stablecoins, governments issuance of their own versions of digital currencies, new regulations that have been enacted and promulgated, and a clearer examination of futuristic evolutions that potentially will have a major impact upon the current cited technologies. Abstract: “A brilliant, impeccably researched must-read analysis of the shifting tectonic plates of American power.” — Inderjeet Parmar, Professor of International Politics, City University of London, UK This book offers a comprehensive explanatory account of Trump’s foreign policy by assessing its nature, determining the extent to which it broke with the policy of preceding presidencies, and explaining this shift’s genesis. We argue that Trump has succeeded in remaking America’s grand strategy by unmaking its long-standing strategy of what we call Open Door Globalism, a strategy of economic expansionism through the promotion of open markets globally and its institutionalization into a US-led liberal world order. Trump has broken with Open Door Globalism in probably lasting ways by adopting an outlook and strategy of neo mercantilist economic nationalism based upon an ‘America First’ redefinition of US sovereignty and national interests. Explaining this Trumpian shift in US foreign policy we focus on the social sources of Trump’s foreign policy-making elite’s agency, analysing its embeddedness in elite networks and within the changing global and domestic context. The latter, coupled with a crisis of established elite power, also indicates why Biden has not returned to Open Door Globalism but doubled down on aspects of the Trumpian economic nationalist break. Abstract: Chapter 1: Presidential Rhetoric and US Foreign Policy -- Chapter 2: Presidential Powers and National Emergencies -- Chapter 3: Presidential Rhetoric and National Emergencies -- Chapter 4: Sanction Rhetoric and Sanction Activities -- Chapter 5: Tough Talk in US Foreign Policy.
Abstract: This book examines how presidents utilize their emergency powers, as well as factors that influence presidential rhetoric in U.S. foreign policy and declarations of national emergencies. Although scholars have examined presidential rhetoric and the influence it has on various policy arenas, this project is the first to take a text analytic approach to assess the nature of presidential rhetoric in the area of U.S. foreign policy and declarations of national emergencies. Broadly, Ouyang and Morgan seek to understand (1) how presidents exercise their authority to declare national emergencies and (2) how presidential rhetoric associated with each declaration of national emergencies changes over time. They begin by providing an overview of the development of presidential emergency powers. Then, they analyze the nature of presidential rhetoric in the context of U.S. foreign policy and national emergencies. Finally, they assess the strategic use of rhetoric in national emergency declarations and evaluate how this influences the implementation of economic sanctions stemming from these policies. In addressing these questions, this book helps to advance our understanding of U.S. foreign policy generally, national emergencies specifically, as well as the impact of presidential rhetoric on the policy selection and execution. Yu Ouyang is Associate Professor of Political Science at Purdue University Northwest, USA. He received his undergraduate degree from Valdosta State University and his PhD from the University of Kentucky. His research on U.S. executive politics and quantitative methods has appeared in Congress & the Presidency, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Public Administration Review, and Social Science Quarterly. Abstract: “Modern warfare has a lot to do with disruptive strategy and technology. The arrival of drones as an instrument of warfare is changing the way wars are planned, prosecuted, won, or lost. This development holds salient implications for statecraft globally. Francis Okpaleke’s book (Drones and US Grand Strategy in the Contemporary World) is a timely and modest contribution to the emerging scholarship on the strategic import of dronification in the context of the rapidly evolving international praxis of warfare. I strongly recommend the book for all stakeholders of the global community of Defence and Strategy.” — Al Chukwuma Okoli, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Political Science and Security Studies, Federal University of Lafia, Nigeria This book makes a compelling case that lethal drone deployment as a counterterrorism tool and instrument of statecraft in targeted states engenders far-reaching consequences for US grand strategy. By examining how successive US administrations since 9/11 have deployed drones in pursuant of different typologies of US grand strategic objectives, the book probes the putative political and strategic goals drones supposedly advance, and the impact of its continued proliferation for US for international security. The book provides a powerful base of evidence for policy makers and researchers by pointing to the perils of deployment of drone technology beyond their immediate or short-term objectives. It also explores how non-state actors and authoritarian regimes such as armed groups are harnessing armed drone technologies for their own political and military ends, as well as the underlying implications for US grand strategy and international security at large. Francis Okpaleke is a Senior Research and Policy Analyst for the Information and Communication Technology Council, Canada. He was formerly a Teaching and Research Fellow at the Department of Politics and Public Policy, University of Waikato, New Zealand. Francis holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and Security Studies, an MSc in Terrorism and Security Studies from the University of Salford, United Kingdom, and a BSc (First Class Honors) in Political Science from the University of Nigeria.

Abstract: “This edited volume is a collection of chapters by noted scholars of US-China relations as well as regional experts on Europe and East Asia. It makes a major contribution to our understanding of the impacts of great power competition on the middle powers in the two most important and dynamic areas of the world. All chapters are clearly written and original, providing fresh and unique insights into the complicated issues in the contemporary world. Strongly recommended for anyone who is interested in the great power relations and regional dynamics in Asia and Europe.” --Suisheng Zhao, Professor, Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, and Editor of Journal of Contemporary China. “Focusing on two uniquely important countries, the US and China, and the spillover effects of their competition on middle powers and smaller states in Europe and East Asia, the contributors have produced a volume that offers valuable comparative insights and fresh perspectives on the defining great power competition of our era.” --Jacques deLisle is Professor of Law and Political Science, and Director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China, at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, USA. This open access edited book brings together a closer examination of European and Asian responses to the escalating rivalry between the US and China. As the new Cold War has surfaced as a perceivable reality in the post-COVID era, the topic itself is of great importance to policymakers, academic researchers, and the interested public. Furthermore, this manuscript makes a valuable contribution to an under-studied and increasingly important phenomenon in international relations: the impact of the growing strategic competition between the United States and China on third parties, such as small and middle powers in the two arguably most affected regions of the world: Europe and East Asia. Abstract: In the Eighth Edition of this classic text on the financial history of bubbles and crashes, Robert McCauley joins with Robert Aliber in building on Charles Kindleberger's renowned work. McCauley draws on his central banking experience to introduce new chapters on cryptocurrency and the United States as the 21st Century global lender of last resort. He also updates the book's coverage of the recent property bubble in China, as well as providing new perspectives on the US housing bubble of 2003-2006, and the Japanese bubble of the late 1980s. And he gives new attention to the social psychology that leads people to take the risk of investing in Ponzi schemes and asset price bubbles. For the first time in this revised and updated edition, figures highlight key points to ensure that today’s generation of finance and economic researchers, students, practitioners and policy-makers—as well as investors looking to avoid crashes—have access to this panoramic history of financial crisis.

Abstract: This book investigates the phenomenon of overbalancing through an analysis of Japan’s foreign policy during the interbellum. In the mid-1930s, Japan withdrew from a naval arms control framework that had restrained military buildup on both sides of the Pacific Ocean since the early 1920s. By doing so, Japan not only triggered a naval arms race with the United States that exhausted its economy, it also destroyed the last institutionalized structure regulating the relationship between the two Pacific powers. Japan and the United States became caught in a spiral of tensions that culminated with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Puzzling is the fact that the international environment in the Asia-Pacific was relatively stable in the mid-1930s, while Washington was pursuing a policy of accommodation toward Tokyo. By rejecting arms control and engaging in unfettered naval expansion, Japan overbalanced against the United States and began its rush to the Pacific War. The book explains Japan’s overbalancing with a neoclassical realist model that combines the literatures on threat perception and civil-military relations. Amid the Manchurian crisis of 1931-1933, as the Japanese government collaborated with the military institution to address the situation in China, military influence on the formulation of foreign policy surged. The perceptual and policy biases of the military, which include the tendency to distrust other countries’ intentions, to adopt worst-case analyses of international dynamics and to strive to maximize military power, gradually penetrated the decision-making process. Dysfunctions in the preexisting structure of Japanese civil-military relations, engendered by an over-depoliticization of the military institution, allowed the navy to convince policymakers that the United States was inherently hostile to Japan, hence the necessity to prepare for war. The government was brainstormed, adopting the biased military perspective on international affairs. Japan overbalanced in a myopic but conscious way. Lionel P. Fatton is Assistant Professor of International Relations at Webster University Geneva, Switzerland, and Research Collaborator at the Research Institute for the History of Global Arms Transfer, Meiji University, Japan.

Abstract: “Professor Dolan’s book is must-reading for students, scholars, and observers of American foreign policy interested in understanding the U.S. relationship with NATO and domestic forces within the United States threatening the long-term support and health of that important international institution. Given the rise of populism in the United States, President Trump’s attempts to disengage from NATO and refocus on the perceived threat from China, and Russia’s unprovoked invasion and continued brutal military action in Ukraine, Dolan’s work could not be more timely and relevant.” —Dr. David B. Cohen, University of Akron “Turbulent global events like the fall of the Berlin Wall, 9/11, the rise of China, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have changed the international system that the United States and NATO have known since the end of the Second World War. From the perspective of American domestic politics, the world has become a more dangerous place. Read this exceptional analysis to help understand why.” —Dr. Alan G. Stolberg, Former Director of European Studies, United States Army War College This book argues that domestic politics and political pressures determine the extent of the U.S. role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) from the emergence of containment strategy against the Soviet Union to the Russian war in Ukraine. NATO has evolved in the domestic politics of U.S. foreign policy from a conventional military alliance to contain the Soviet Union during the Cold War to an important instrument in the competition against China and Russia. This book examines American domestic political implications of U.S. security commitments to NATO. It adopts a historical approach and places the U.S. foreign policy toward NATO on the domestic level of analysis by highlighting domestic political determinants in the foreign policymaking process. It also highlights the connections between the Biden Administration’s definition of a struggle between democracy and autocracy and the state of American democracy following the January 6th insurrection by far-right Trump extremists. U.S. These include the evolution of American attitudes towards NATO, societal and economic factors, and entrenched bureaucratic interests shaping U.S. foreign policy. The book incorporates the contributions of major theoretical works on the domestic political factors that shape foreign policy preferences and behavior to understand the extent to which domestic politics influences the historical evolution of the U.S. role in NATO and American foreign policy toward Europe. Chris J. Dolan is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Master’s of Science program in Intelligence and Security Studies at Lebanon Valley College and a two-time Fulbright U.S. Scholar (North Macedonia, 2022; Kosovo, 2020).

Abstract: This Palgrave Pivot presents a historical reflection about the development of sociology in Colombia from the late nineteenth century into the mid-twentieth century, a period in which the process of professionalization in the discipline occurred due to the creation of university training programs, as well as the extension of research centers and groups nationwide. The book exposes the different interrelations at the local, regional and international ambits that, only in part, offer a similar panorama to what happened in other Latin American processes in relation to the academic institutionalization of sociology. The role of international networks and government initiatives, national and foreign, was central to this development and, in general, to the take-off of sociology in the country, as happened in others nations such as Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. This book argues that, in Colombia, having these networks and initiatives during the Cold War generated various tensions, which appeared early, between these forms of financing as a political effort to contain left movements in the region (especially after the Cuban Revolution) and the attempt to achieve an autonomous science. However, the Colombian case presents some peculiarities in the configuration of sociology at the national level. These are associated, to a large extent, with the phenomena that have been decisive in the history of the country: a nation without dictatorships between 1960 and 1970, unlike other South American countries, but with a restricted democracy that even today offers difficulties in order to accept alternative forces. This book also considers the effects of the longest armed conflict known in the continent and its own historical transformations in the face of the role played by various actors such as guerrillas, drug trafficking and paramilitary groups. The book thus discusses, under a specific case study, the role of science as well as the possibilities of social transformation through human action. This book constitutes not only a journey on the academic institutionalization and the professional practice of sociology in Colombia; it is also an opportunity to think about what is coming in this field in a possible post-conflict scenario. Janneth Aldana Cedeño is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia. .

Abstract: “A rare effort that prompts us to consider that conspiracy theories exist as do conspiracies. Finding a way to hold both phenomena in our minds without letting one overwhelm the other is a task and project that few are willing to undertake. Thank goodness Hellinger does it.” – Jack Z. Bratich, Associate Professor of Communications, Rutgers University “This is a cracking book. A fantastically rich and compelling analysis. It fills a lacuna of social science theorization of conspiracy with a superbly crafted and updated contribution.” – Julia Buxton, British Academy Global Professor, Criminology, University of Manchester Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theory in the Age of Trump stands out in the burgeoning literature on conspiracism with its call for political scientists to analyze not only “conspiracy theory” as political pathology but conspiracies themselves as political behavior symbiotically related to moral hazards and other forces unleashed by dark money, disinformation, changing technologies, and globalization. This new updated edition extends this analysis to the belief by many Americans that the 2020 election was stolen, resistance to social measures to counter the Covid epidemic, attempts by Trump and his allies to “stop the steal,” and the resulting mob insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. We likely will see both conspiracism and actual conspiracies play a greater role due to institutional decay in American politics. For this reason, political scientists need to analyse and theorize the role of conspiracies in politics—why they prosper and fail, how conspiracies may inflect political outcomes, what relationship they bear to social forces unleashed by great economic and social change. Abstract: This book highlights how the practical skills of the police officer can be transferred into the realm of academic research and support them in becoming part of the evidence-based policing movement. It starts by exploring the professionalisation of the police service through higher education accreditation and the different methodologies of social research practice. Using operational comparisons and a little humour, it guides the reader through the swamp of concepts and processes, such as ethical approval, research paradigms and data gathering and analysis. It then takes them on a journey of reflection and reflexivity, challenging their own perspective on policing and working within the wider criminal justice sector and how they can make a valuable contribution to the development of policing practice. Abstract: The handbook offers epistemologically and ontologically important personal accounts of academic and professional researchers having long-term intensive, comprehensive and ethnographic fieldwork in various social settings and versatile regional contexts across the globe. The accounts are cross-disciplinary including anthropology, sociology, geography, political sciences, gender studies, forestry & environmental studies, economics, and international relations. These are also trans-regional covering the globe including South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America. The book offers a comprehensive portrait of multifaceted challenges that social researchers experience while doing fieldwork in various social settings. The accounts provide both challenges of doing fieldwork in the 21st century and the ways how to address/redress them in the field by complying with the codes of ethics, and the politics of fieldwork. Readers could enormously benefit from the handbook by understanding methodological issues from both disciplinary relevance and regional specificity across time and spaces. Abstract: The book dives into the socio-historical roots of the current ‘disintegration’ of the Yemeni state, proposing that it is the result of a long process of devaluation of the Yemeni economy through imperialistic means, in the historical era of Advanced American imperialism—starting in the 1970s—that is facing the rise of China since the 1980s. As the United States feels threatened by the blossoming of Chinese influence on the Red Sea and the strategic maritime straits of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb, it is of utmost importance to understand the centrality of the war on Yemen. The disintegration of the Yemeni state since 2015, involving the disintegration of Yemeni sovereignty (in part through the fragmentation of the country), is a means of creating political chaos in a strategic country. The goal is to limit the growth of Chinese influence in the region of the Arab world, which threatens the financial superstructure of the global economic system based on the US dollar. Abstract: “A unique book analyzing with depth and breadth why and how the so-called ‘War on Terror’ has had for more than two decades a dramatic impact on the broad Middle East region, contributing to the effective rise of China and Russia in this part of the world. (…)” — Prof. Cristina D’Alessandro, Centre on Governance at the University of Ottawa, Canada. “An important contribution to research on U.S. policy in the Middle East. (…)” —Dr. Farkhad AliMukhamedov, Sciences Po, France. “A new indispensable addition for every library featuring Middle Eastern studies. (…)” —Dr. Ignacio Rullansky, National University of San Martin, Argentina. After two decades of War on Terror, it is particularly important, for both academic and policy purposes, to clearly understand why the US formidable mobilization of means and might has transformed into a such a blatant geostrategic defeat of the US and its allies in the broad Middle East. This is all the more paradoxical that the WOT achieved a series of tactical victories – such as the toppling of hostile regimes in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya; the crippling of the national economies of enemy states by sanctions; the successful targeted killing of lead terrorist Usama Bin Laden, ISIS cult leaders Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi and his successor, etc. So, why have these tactical victories not led to what was supposed to become, according to the US government, a ‘Greater Middle East’? With most authors being from or living in the Middle East, this book is unique as it brings perspectives and answers from the region. This is crucially important as we are entering, we argue, the era of a Post-American Middle East. Abstract: Great power competition is back on the world stage, and today’s international system is home to regional influences on great power relations that cannot be ignored. The United States’ unipolar moment is long over, and China’s hegemonic ambitions find expression in a comprehensive global competition with the US that plays out across multiple spheres of world politics. The US-China rivalry can be felt in geostrategic, economic, governance, diplomacy, intelligence, and technological spheres, to name a few. Most accounts of China-US relations in the context of great power conflict emphasize the many ways in which this rivalry has a ripple effect across the globe, with an impact upon the relations and interests of smaller powers. And while these effects are considerable and important, this book contends that attention must also be paid to the ways in which smaller, regional states have the potential to shape this great power rivalry. Put simply, great powers both shape, and are shaped by, smaller states. Any understanding of contemporary great power relations between the US and China requires both a top down, but also a bottom up consideration of the interplay between great powers and regional ones. Often the interests of regional powers are rooted in domestic considerations such as their identities and national interests, and these influences transcend borders and often have an impact upon the great powers. This book considers these smaller, regional actors and attempts to measure the extent to which they influence the US-China rivalry. For this study, constructivist theory, which prioritizes the agency that regional powers enjoy, is loosely used as a tool to enable a more robust and comprehensive understanding of the influences on the contemporary great power relationship. Each of the book’s chapters represents a region, or part of a region, that enjoys a considerable impact upon US-China relations. Abstract: "To understand the work of law we need to make sense of the courtroom, a space of majesty, possibility, oppression, and routine. This valuable ethnography tells us why and how." -Nicholas Blomley, Professor of Geography, Simon Fraser University, Canada "Courtroom Ethnography builds on an impressive array of empirical research to investigate thoroughly the multiple practical, visual, interpretive, and political challenges of doing court observations. With robust data from eight countries, 21 authors and 14 chapters, this volume is the go-to resource for research in and around courtrooms." -Sharyn Roach Anleu, Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor, Flinders University, Australia "This edited collection provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of how courtroom ethnography can be used to get a rich understanding of a complex and nuanced process. This collection provides a mix of theoretical and practical examples for the reader to draw on and appreciate the art of ethnography." -Naomi Creutzfeldt, Professor of Law and Society, Kent Law School, University of Kent, Canterbury, UK This book provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary examination of courtroom ethnography. This collection gathers international researchers from a multitude of disciplines to explore three central themes: doing courtroom ethnography, ethnographic studies of the courtroom, and contemporary and critical aspects of courtroom ethnography. It highlights the nuances, negotiations, and issues that ethnographic researchers face in the courtroom. It covers topics like how to study legal actors and lay participants, legal and social processes, norms and rulings, digitalisation and vulnerability, gender and inequalities, and more across a range of legal cases. It presents the current state of the art of the field of courthouse ethnography with a discussion of methodological challenges, modes of access and best practice examples. With practical tips/questions at the end of each chapter, it speaks to students and above in subjects including sociology, criminology, law, geography, sociology of law, conflict studies, socio-legal studies and beyond. Lisa Flower is Associate Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Criminology at the Department of Sociology, Lund University, Sweden. Her research explores the role of emotions in legal professionals’ work and how experiences and understandings of the legal sphere are shaped by digitalization. Sarah Klosterkamp is Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and Associate Lecturer in the Department of Geography at Bonn University, Germany. Her work investigates how the law proceeds and multiplies classed and racialized geographies of inequalities within and through state-driven institutions such as courts, social housing facilities, employment offices, and carceral spaces. .

Abstract: "This book is certainly useful for historians, as well as economists, sociologists and demographers. Nonetheless, policy makers and all the organizations (including non-profits) dealing with and managing human migration will find this work helpful." - Giovanni Gregorini, Professor, Faculty of Linguistic Sciences and Foreign Literatures and Chair, Department of History and Philology, Italy. This edited collection sheds light on the complex nature of migratory movements through the lens of economic and social history. It addresses a variety of migration issues involving Europe and the Americas in order to offer new insights on past and future migration and integration policies. The volume comprises multi-disciplinary research from both continents dealing with the economic, political, demographical and sociological impact of migration. This interdisciplinary approach aims to stimulate intellectual dialogue on the migration phenomenon among the international community of scholars in Europe and North and South America. It is divided into three parts, which offer an essential contribution to the issue of migration and aim at better understanding the effect that different forms of migration have had and will continue to exert on economic and social change in receiving countries. This book is a valuable resource for a wide audience including academics, students in the economic and social sciences, and government and EU officials working with migration topics.

Abstract: This open access publication deals with the operationalisation of the welfare state as an independent variable. To study how welfare states affect social inequality, individual behaviour, attitudes and more in different countries, an empirical operationalisation of the welfare state or specific elements of social policy is required. However, this operationalisation is fraught with some important problems. These problems essentially relate to one point: while there are a large number of contributions dealing with the measurement of differences between welfare states per se and as a dependent variable, there is a lack of feasible recommendations for a standardised operationalisation of welfare stateness as an independent variable. So far, there has been no systematic investigation of how such different approaches may affect the results and their comparability. Also missing is an in-depth conceptual discussion of which features of the welfare state are particularly relevant for explaining certain effects. This book fills both gaps. First, it exposes the pitfalls of existing approaches and shows how much empirical results can vary depending on the operationalisation chosen. Second, it proposes a framework for a standardised conceptualisation and operationalisation of social policies as independent variables that constrains operational decisions in a theoretically meaningful way

Abstract: This book explores the early evangelical quest for enlightenment by the Spirit and the Word. While the pursuit originated in the Protestant Reformation, it assumed new forms in the long eighteenth-century context of the early Enlightenment and transatlantic awakened Protestant reform. This work illuminates these transformations by focusing on the dynamic intersection of experimental philosophy and experimental religion in the biblical practices of early America’s most influential Protestant theologians, Cotton Mather (1663-1728) and Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758). As the first book-length project to treat Mather and Edwards together, this study makes an important contribution to the extensive scholarship on these figures, opening new perspectives on the continuities and complexities of colonial New England religion. It also provides new insights and interpretive interventions concerning the history of the Bible, early modern intellectual history, and evangelicalism’s complex relationship to the Enlightenment. Ryan P. Hoselton is Associate Pastor at Munich International Community Church and Visiting Scholar at Heidelberg University in Germany, where he taught religious history and historical theology from 2016-2023. He co-edited The Bible in Early Transatlantic Pietism and Evangelicalism (2022), and he is editing vol. 7 of the Biblia Americana (Matthew-Luke).

Abstract: "Dr. Schafer and Chief Myers have developed a comprehensive and contemporary guidebook for leading the next generation of police reform. An evidence-based mix of research and policy that goes beyond the norm providing thoughtful insights on police change that is of value to both the policing scholar and police practitioner.” -David L. Carter, Professor, Michigan State University, USA Policing in the US and many western nations is in an era of crisis, facing extensive calls for reformation and change. This edited book outlines the major challenges and changes needed to achieve a more stable future for the policing profession and police organizations. The chapters come from innovative police leaders and officers as well as academics with subject matter expertise, to provide insight into how reform can be achieved. It starts with an examination of how policing reached this state of crisis and discusses some interviews conducted with police leaders, particularly chiefs as agents of change and reform. This is followed by chapters from veteran police leaders and personnel describing some of the factors that brought policing to this critical time of change and reform, and some potential strategies to create meaningful change while considering unintended consequences. The book concludes with chapters from academics and police leaders defining paths that policing can take toward needed changes that will increase legitimacy, trust, and equality of policing services. The text speaks to students, academics and professionals interested in police organization and administration, police leadership, and contemporary issues in policing and criminal justice. Joseph A. Schafer is Professor of Criminology and Criminal at Saint Louis University, USA. His research focuses on policing, organizational change, leadership, citizen perceptions of police, and futures research in policing. Richard W. Myers is a retired police chief with over 40 years of law enforcement experience, including 33 years as the chief of 8 different agencies in six different US states. He has served leadership roles in a range of police professional associations, including serving as the President/Chair for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and as the Executive Director for the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA.

Abstract: “This ground-breaking study introduces a challenging genre of women’s writing in which dauntless female protagonists represent a powerful alternative to the dominant traditions of the heroic male adventurer. The study is underpinned by substantive historical research. The clarity and engagement of King’s writing ensure it will be appreciated by academic and general readers alike.” —Pam Morris, independent scholar, formerly Professor of Modern Critical Studies at Liverpool John Moores University This book brings together for the first time nine groundbreaking historical novels by women from the United States, Canada and Latin America, united by their focus on female adventurers. These novels introduce the neglected women of history, real and imagined, who accompanied their menfolk to the New World, and enabled its settlement or colonisation. Familiar novelists include Isabel Allende, Audrey Thomas and Jane Smiley, but this book also introduces less familiar writers who have produced richly textured and densely historical novels. In addition to putting women back into history, these writers engage with the literature of the past, including the American canon of male fiction which dominated literary history before the intervention of feminist scholars. The book begins with an introduction to the history of historical fiction and provides a theoretical, historical and geographical context for the novels themselves. Jeannette King is Professor Emerita of English at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Publications include: Discourses of Ageing in Fiction and Feminism (2012), The Victorian Woman Question in Contemporary Feminist Fiction (2005), Women and the Word: Contemporary Women Novelists and the Bible (2000) , and Tragedy in the Victorian Novel: Theory and Practice in the Novels of George Eliot, Thomas Hardy and Henry James (1978) .

Abstract: Neo-Victorian Things: Re-Imagining Nineteenth-Century Material Cultures in Literature and Film is the first volume to focus solely on the replication, reconstruction, and re-presentation of Victorian things. It investigates the role of materiality in contemporary returns to the past as a means of assessing the function of things in remembering, revisioning, and/or reimagining the nineteenth century. Examining iterations of material culture in literature, film and popular television series, this volume offers a reconsideration of nineteenth-century things and the neo-Victorian cultural forms that they have inspired, animated, and even haunted. By turning to new and relatively underexplored strands of neo-Victorian materiality—including opium paraphernalia, slave ships, clothing, and biographical objects—and interrogating the critical role such objects play in reconstructing the past, this volume offers ways of thinking about how mis/apprehensions of material culture in the nineteenth century continue to shape our present understanding of things.

Abstract: This book presents the most compelling arguments for and against implementing a basic income guarantee today, in the voice of proponents and critics, in alternating chapters. Tables, figures, and pictures illustrate the key concepts and evidence, which include benefit cliffs and disincentive deserts, time series macroeconomic data, business, economic, and technological change (BETC), artificial intelligence and other general purpose technologies, along with advanced robotics, the environmental Kuznets Curve, income distributions, democracy, social justice, dependence, autonomy, and economic freedom. A neutral, non-partisan tone introduction defines UBI and covers the history of universal income plans, while the conclusion summarizes the main arguments for and against UBI before surveying alternative policies, including universal basic asset, credit, service, job, and training plans. Abstract: This book critically explores how police power manifested beyond criminal law into the field of public health during the pandemic. Whilst people were engaged with anti-police violence protests, particularly in the US, they were being policed openly and notoriously by the government and medical science in the public health arena. The book explores how public health policing might be an abuse of constitutional power and encourages the abolition question to be applied consistently to the state’s discourse in the area of public health, as black people the world over continue to bear a disproportionate cost burden for public health policies. The chapters explore contemporary policing in terms of the historical context of slavery, the growth of the police and prison abolition movement and how this should be applied more widely, and how police power operates throughout society beyond the criminal justice system, in finance, technology, housing, education, and in medicine and health science. It seeks to re-examine our relationship to health sovereignty and the police power more fundamentally. It provides insights into the convergence of policing and social control of humans and argues that the most normative response is abolition. Tryon P. Woods is Associate Professor of Crime and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts, USA, and Special Lecturer in Black Studies at Providence College, USA. Dr. Woods has worked with community-based organizations in New York City, Seattle, and Oakland on HIV/AIDS prevention, supportive housing for drug users, and police accountability. Abstract: This book is the first collection of scholarship featuring both Canadian and American scholarship on the resurgent right-wing extremist movement in the two countries. It is particularly timely given the recent rise in political populism that has engendered renewed activism from extreme right contingents. Trump’s right-wing populist and white nationalist political campaign has galvanized Canadian and American white supremacist ideologies, identities, movements and practices. Leading Canadian and American scholars are brought together to explore a contemporary array of current dynamics, patterns and characteristics associated with the movement in each country. Split into four sections, it provides an introduction to extremism in the 21st century, it examines studying extremism, forms of extremist activity and violence, and the responses. The collection allows comparisons to be drawn out from the distinct treatments of each country. It speaks to students as well as scholars in social sciences departments, including criminology, sociology, social justice, and terrorism, peace and security studies, and political-violence related programs. Barbara Perry is Professor in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at Ontario Tech University, Canada, and the Director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism. Jeff Gruenewald is Associate Professor and Director of the Terrorism Research Center (TRC) in the Department of Sociology & Criminology at University of Arkansas, USA. Ryan Scrivens is Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University, USA. He is also Associate Director at the International CyberCrime Research Centre at Simon Fraser University, Canada, and Research Fellow at the VOX-Pol Network of Excellence.

Abstract: Introduction -- Financial context -- Visual context -- The merchant princes -- The charlatans -- Financial iconography -- Gender -- The other -- The law -- Dreams and the unconscious -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book provides a critical analysis of visual images of British and international finance during the nineteenth century. Its focus is on the financiers themselves, contrasting the depiction of the respectable Merchant Princes with the less than perfect charlatans (white-collar criminals) who defrauded investors of millions. The breakdown of trust between financiers and investors that evolved during this period is represented visually in depictions of the emotional response of investors to the uncertain financial climate. Throughout the book a PEARL methodology has been used to critique the images reflecting the impact of any Publisher’s political bias, the Editorial and Artistic techniques used to convey the messages in the images, and the Legal context (especially a concern in countries such as France and Germany where censorship was strict). The book concludes that white-collar criminals were invariably secretly admired in Britain, and rarely severely satirised. Similarly, Merchant Princes were depicted favourably in Britain as members of the ruling elite during the latter half of the century. This is contrasted with the more extreme anti-monopolistic images in the US and the extreme anti-Semitic treatment of Jewish financiers in France and Germany. Henry Sless is currently a Research Associate at Henley Business School at the University of Reading, UK. He received a Master’s in historical cartoons from the University of Kent, UK, and a doctorate in visual images of finance in the Victorian era from the University of Reading.

Abstract: This book provides a novel account of the role of human rights discourse in the US foreign policy. The book analyses the US State Department’s Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices as a means to monopolise and, more importantly, legitimise a specific framing of the human rights agenda to further US foreign policy. The US agenda’s deviation from established international human rights standards has very serious implications considering the preponderant global influence exercised by the US. Furthermore, more recently, the reports have added a separate section on "corruption" as a human rights issue. “Corruption”, a controversial concept from the outset, is understood in a narrow way as a public sector issue that largely prevails in and subverts the so-called developing and transition countries. This book shows how this recent inclusion ultimately serves the US global neoliberal imperialist agenda and becomes the hegemonic discourse in international organisations. Dr. Ilia Xypolia is Lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Aberdeen, UK, and the reviews editor for the Journal of Global Faultlines. .

Abstract: ‘This comparative analysis of contemporary climate change discourse in the EU and the US impresses through its sound theoretical grounding and systematic empirical investigation. It makes an outstanding contribution to understanding the critical role of ideas and their framing in climate politics. It also provides new insights into the deep-rooted transatlantic differences in this policy field. Recommended reading!’ —Sebastian Oberthür, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium and University of Eastern Finland, Finland ‘This book provides the first comprehensive comparison of climate action in the EU and the US after the Paris Agreement. Contrasting policy development in both cases, it shows the power of ideas in explaining different approaches to tackling climate change.’ —Jon Birger Skjærseth, Fridtjof Nansens Institute, Norway ‘This book makes a novel contribution to our understanding of different discourses in climate change policy-making on the EU level and in the US. The book makes an important and very timely contribution to the literature. It provides a comprehensive assessment of core ideas and discourses which shape EU and American climate policy-making.’ —Rüdiger Wurzel, University of Hull, UK Political responses to climate change are shaped by beliefs and ideas. How does discourse on climate action and its contestation affect policy-making? Addressing this question, the book compares EU and US policy-making since the Paris Agreement and its framing by key political institutions. The empirical part analyses the structure, linkages and contestation of frames to evaluate the contrasting spaces of climate politics in both systems. As the first direct comparison of EU and US climate governance since the Paris Agreement, the book advances current research on the politics of climate change, the politicization of multi-level governance and the role of discourse for policy change. Abstract: This book analyzes the transformations and consistencies of American leadership during the past few years and situates recent American foreign policy in a longer time frame, following the 2020 presidential election and after a full year of the Biden Administration. This longer and broader view by European and American academics and experts considers both shifting American policies, notably during Trump’s presidency, and underlying trends that have often gone ignored compared to the more dramatic antics of the 45th president. It helps decode recent American policy and permits us to consider possible new directions and likely continuities under Democratic leadership.

Abstract: “African agency in moderating China-US competition to advance peace and prosperity on the continent, with mutual benefit for the two global powers, is well-served by this concise and compelling book. This book should be required reading for policymakers and concerned publics throughout Africa and abroad.” -- John Stremlau, Head of Peace Programmes, Carter Center, USA. This book offers a rich perspective on Africa’s agency in the changing global order marked by intense geopolitical contestations. It discusses ways in which the African continent has been on the margins of the global economic system because of the actions of major powers and Africa’s own leaders, and how this legacy can be overcome. The book covers an uncharted ground in analyzing the intersection between geopolitical rivalry, digital futures, and Africa’s place in the world. This text makes a clarion call for African leaders and citizens to define better development pathways for the continent through insisting on ethical and transformation leadership as well as building credible institutions that are inclusive. This, according to the author, will ensure a sounder basis for Africa’s positive agency. Further, the book makes a strong case for structural transformation that is innovation-led, and that African decision-makers should leverage US-China rivalries to achieve Africa’s own development interests. Mzukisi Qobo is Head, Wits School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand. He serves on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Economic Advisory Council. He has in the past served in a senior role in government as Chief Director responsible for trade policy in the Department of Trade and Industry, South Africa. His areas of expertise are governance, political economy, and geopolitics. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick, UK.

Abstract: This book examines the nexus between City Networks, multilevel governance and migration policy. Examining several City Networks operating in the European Union and the United States of America’s multilevel political settings, it brings migration research into conversation with both policy studies and political science. One of the first comparative studies of City Networks and migration, the book argues that multilevel governance is the result of a contingent process of converging interests and views between leaders in network organisations and national governments, the latter continuing to play a key gatekeeping role on this topical issue even in the supranational EU system. Tiziana Caponio is Associate Professor at the University of Turin and Fellow at Collegio Carlo Alberto, Italy. In this conceptually and empirically rich analysis, Tiziana Caponio changes the way we think about migration by focusing on cities and the important role played by city networks. By changing the focus to the city, Caponio also changes the way that we understand these issues and sets out an innovative agenda for both academic researchers and policy-makers. Andrew Geddes, Director, Migration Policy Center/EUI Caponio explores the topical issue of migration policy, and the central role that cities play in it, using the theoretical lens of multilevel and network governance and making significant strides in the understanding and conceptualization of both theoretical approaches and the necessary and sufficient conditions for their activation emphasizing the role of distinct sets of actors. The cross-Atlantic comparative approach lends wider purchase to her analysis and enriches the institutional dimension of her exploration. Simona Piattoni, Professor of Political Science, Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Trento.

Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch präsentiert Sandra Binder-Tietz eine umfassende Analyse der Kommunikation von Aufsichtsratsvorsitzenden börsennotierter Unternehmen.

Abstract: This Open Access book presents a pioneering research on brownfield redevelopment in mountain regions, and specifically in the European Alps. The origins and causes, the actual conditions as well as the future challenges and potentials of mountain brownfields are investigated from an interdisciplinary yet landscape-centered perspective. Through the reasoned combination of research-by-design methods and case-study analysis, the book explores the infrastructural relevance of these sites for the specific mountain territory, while advancing an innovative structuralist-systemic approach for their physical and functional transformation. The book includes, among others, a first transnational geo-mapping of Alpine brownfields, whose impressive outcomes in terms of site numbers and distribution can only confirm the urgency of this research

Abstract: Das Open Access Buch bietet eine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme zum freiwilligen Engagement in Deutschland.

Abstract: "If many people were shocked by Trump's 2016 election, many more were stunned when, months later, white power extremists took to the streets of Charlottesville chanting "Blood and Soil" and "Jews will not replace us!" Like Trump, the Charlottesville marchers were dismissed as aberrations -- the momentary appearance of "racists" and "haters" who didn't represent the real U.S. Rather than being exceptional, It Can Happen Here argues these events are symptoms of the country's long history of systemic white supremacy, genocide, and atrocity crimes. And there is a high likelihood that such violence will occur here again. This reality, "It Can Happen Here" demonstrates, is a key post-mortem lesson we have learned from the 2016-2020 Trump presidency. "It Can Happen Here" breaks new ground by raising the alarm about the on-going threat of genocide and mass violence in the U.S. as well as considering path forward for repair. Written from a public anthropology perspective, it is also the field's first book to explore contemporary white power extremism in the U.S"--

Abstract: "The meaning of sport is gendered—but not always as we might be imagining. A Performative Feel for the Game goes beyond taken-for-granted gender hierarchies. Through a cultural analysis of Norwegian handball, Trygve Broch teaches us how narratives, historical myths and welfare policies intermingle with processes of democratization, showing how sport is not reducible to power and inequality. A multifaceted social and existential sphere is thereby opened up. This is an exciting and intriguing read that will generate a lively debate among sport sociologists." —Anna Lund, Associate Professor of Sociology, Stockholm University, Sweden Applying a cultural sociology of performance, this book interrogates how the meaning of sport intersects with gender. Trygve B. Broch points out uncertainties in the causal arguments made by key figures in the cultural studies tradition, instead advancing a meaning-centered study of sports as involving both a social and an athletic performance. Sports not only reflect or reverse social realities, but capture and keep our attention when we use and experience them as a means to reflect on social life, injustice, and hierarchy. More specifically, blending approaches from media studies with ethnography, Broch explores the women-dominated sport of handball in Norway, a country that considers gender equality a basis of democracy. As such, the analyses here show how broadly available meanings about sameness and equality are mediated and experienced through a performative feel for the game.

Abstract: This volume is first consistent effort to systematically analyze the features and consequences of colonial repatriation in comparative terms, examining the trajectories of returnees in six former colonial countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Portugal). Each contributor examines these cases through a shared cultural sociology frame, unifying the historical and sociological analyses carried out in the collection. More particularly, the book strengthens and improves one of the most important and popular current streams of cultural sociology, that of collective trauma. Using a comparative perspective to study the trajectories of similarly traumatized groups in different countries allows for not only a thick description of the return processes, but also a thick explanation of the mechanisms and factors shaping them. Learning from these various cases of colonial returnees, the authors have been able to develop a new theoretical framework that may help cultural sociologists to explain why seemingly similar claims of collective trauma and victimhood garner respect and recognition in certain contexts, but fail in others.
