Abstract: The acid test of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is simply this: does it lead to positive impacts on society and the environment or is it just rhetoric? And if it does lead to positive impacts, how can these be enhanced? This timely book tackles this cutting-edge challenge by presenting empirical findings from a range of surveys and in-depth case studies. These build on a new methodological and theoretical framework for assessing and explaining the sustainability impact of CSR

Abstract: In the post-Enron era, corporate corruption is increasingly on the research agenda. This informative book provides a novel approach by charting the causes of corruption. It demonstrates how agency (decisions and choices of individuals) and structure (the contextual pressures in the business environment) can interact to result in the rapid escalation of corporate crime. By analyzing and describing the social psychological dimensions of this escalation, the book will be effective in creating preventive measures that can be designed and implemented in business organizations

Abstract: This book develops and illustrates a comprehensive, multi-level framework for the evaluation of industrial R&D activities and the measurement of their performances. The framework encompasses a set of hierarchical, interrelated levels at which R&D evaluation and performance measurement could be undertaken. This enlightening book focuses on the single industrial firm to study performance measurement of R&D functions, projects and individual researchers or engineers. It also addresses the R&D evaluation from the point of view of financial markets, with a focus on the relationships between R&D investments and the value of the traded firm

Abstract: Do modes of management depend on company ownership? Does macroeconomic performance rely on shareholder value? The contributions collected in this book explore these questions from economic, historical and legal perspectives. They examine company ownership through the study of national institutions, with particular focus on North America and Europe. The twelve economic and legal specialists of this volume seek to explain why firms organized along the shareholder model have not outperformed other forms of ownership. Abstract: In recent decades, the world has witnessed the emergence of a global knowledge economy in which functional regions increasingly play a role as independent and dynamic market places. These are integrated with other functional regions by means of flows of information, knowledge, and commodities. This contemporary and illuminating book provides a state-of-the-art overview of current research on innovation and entrepreneurship in functional regions. There are numerous questions regarding entrepreneurship and innovation in functional regions that have not yet been answered - until now. Some of the issues that the expert contributors in this field question are - How do firms compete and how do they develop their competitive strategies? Abstract: In open and dynamic markets, only innovation can give a firm a competitive advantage and with it the superior cash flows that generate value. This book offers a new conceptual structure and applicable analytical models for evaluating a firm's innovation strategies in highly competitive environments and for estimating firm value. Using analytical models, Angelo Dringoli examines the conditions under which innovation strategy can create and maintain value, based on different environmental dynamics. Quantitative models are used to determine the value of innovation strategies in highly dynamic and competitive industries. These clearly reveal the economic variables and relations upon which the strategy depends, and the conditions for creating sustainable value within the firm. This stimulating integrated analysis will appeal to researchers and postgraduate students with an interest in economics, finance and business administration, as well as managers and professionals involved in strategic management and firm evaluation

Abstract: It is a general understanding that the advanced economies are currently undergoing a fundamental transformation into knowledge-based societies. There is a firm belief that this is based on the development of high-tech industries. Correspondingly, in this scenario low-tech sectors appear to be less important. A critique of this widely held belief is the starting point of this book. It is often overlooked that many of the current innovation activities are linked to developments inside the realm of low-tech. Thus the general objective of the book is to contribute to a discussion concerning the relevance of low-tech industries for industrial innovativeness in the emerging knowledge economy

Abstract: This detailed, comprehensive study on downsizing in Europe is underpinned by cross-national, interdisciplinary empirical research on restructuring management in five European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. It contains systematic national comparative overviews, and transversal analyses of more than 30 in-depth case studies, taking into account a broad range of perspectives across professional human resources managers, unions" representatives, local and national civil servants, social workers and physicians. The authors examine strategic choices and practices in national and local contexts, showing that the practice of restructuring is not as heterogeneous as many previous studies have indicated or predicted. Systematic policy proposals for better economic and social management of restructuring are also prescribed

Abstract: 1. Introduction : legal transplants, convergence and regionalism in Chinese corporate law reform -- 2. Birth pangs of a market : creation and development of China's cross-border share markets -- 3. Securities, regulatory authorities and H-share enterprises -- 4. Internal governance structures within the H-share firm : solving agency problems in a cross-border environment -- 5. Nine case studies : the story of nine vanguard firms in China's H-share market -- 6. Market efficiency in a Chinese context.
Abstract: Using detailed case studies of the first nine mainland Chinese companies to be listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange (1993-94), Alice de Jonge examines the evolution of corporate governance law and culture in China's H-share market. A story emerges not of tensions between ideas of corporate governance from two different legal systems--Hong Kong vs. mainland Chinese--nor about legal convergence as China adopts concepts from Anglo-American jurisdictions. Rather, it is a story of individual firms being pragmatic in mediating the different agendas of state-agencies that own or control them. Corporate Governance and China's H-Share Market looks at corporate governance in a cross-border context, is unique in providing a detailed understanding of China's H-share market, reveals why a beer company was the first ever Chinese firm to be listed overseas. This fascinating work will appeal to postgraduate students and scholars of corporate governance, Asian law and legal systems and Asian business, as well as Chinese scholars more generally. Professionals such as law practitioners working in Chinese law will also find the book of interest

Abstract: Martin Ricketts, a leading scholar in this field, has selected the seminal papers from a variety of traditions that illustrate the evolution of thinking on 'the firm' over a considerable period of time. The firm as a vehicle for entrepreneurial initiative and the exercise of business judgement is contrasted throughout with the firm as a policing mechanism in response to known contractual hazards. The selection is in three volumes that cover respectively the general theoretical background; the ownership and scope of the firm - its degree of vertical and transnational integration; and agency issues relating to employee incentives and the control of managers. This authoritative collection will provide a valuable reference, of interest to students, postgraduates and professional economists seeking an overview of the subject and its evolution

Abstract: Business Relating Business argues that business performance depends on the way a firm is connected to other firms and organisations and not just its own skill and resources. The book synthesises thinking from marketing, management, economics and international business with evolutionary biology and complexity theory, as well as integrating many years' research on interfirm relations and networks. It develops the management and policy implications of adopting relationship and network perspectives and sets out an agenda for future research

Abstract: Joris Knoben illustrates that the number of firm relocations has grown steadily and considerably over the last decade and, at the same time, relationships between organizations have become more important to firm performance. It is often argued that these relationships require geographical stability, and so the author explores how these two seemingly contradictory observations can be reconciled. Insights from economic geography and organization science are utilized to develop a multidisciplinary firm-level perspective on the causes and consequences of firm relocation. Subsequently, this framework is tested empirically. The results show that incorporating the level of embeddedness as well as the spatial mobility of firms into a single framework leads to significantly better explanations of both the spatial behavior of firms as well as of the outcomes of this behavior. All-in-all, the findings indicate that there is a tradeoff between spatial mobility and inter-organizational stability. This multidisciplinary perspective on the relations between organizational networks, spatial firm mobility, and firm performance will be of great interest to a range of scholars, including organization scientists, regional scientists and economic geographers and, managers of relocating companies as well as consultants in this field

Abstract: Frank Tipton's book is a comparative study of the management structures of Asian firms. As Asian economies continue to expand, the management of Asian firms becomes ever more important, whether they are suppliers, customers, partners, or rivals. As the author argues, Asian firms are very different from their Western counterparts, and these differences reflect the variations in national history and institutions within which they operate

Abstract: Business Networks and Strategic Alliances in China addresses how knowledge transfer and innovation are interwoven within complex networks and how social capital contributes to the acquisition of crucial resources and business success in multi-type enterprises in China. The book explains how China's remarkable global economic impact in recent years has developed from foreign investment and that the dominant vehicle for economic development has been the International Joint Venture (IJV) between Chinese manufacturers and overseas enterprises. Strict guidelines on FDI mean that foreign firms have been obliged to form relationships with Chinese organizations. The authors illustrate that as a direct result, the quality and nature of the relations, networks, and alliances forged is crucial for the success of Chinese businesses. A sophisticated empirical, theoretical, comparative and historical guide to understanding the nature of business networks in China is provided by this work. As such, it makes a distinct contribution to the furtherance of evidence-based management theory and practice and will strongly appeal to those with an interest in management, international business and Asian studies

Abstract: China's long-term economic success is driven by new firms, new sectors and new business practices. This book explores the establishment of new private firms and listed companies, the development of knowledge industries, in particular the IT and banking sectors and the co-evolution of public governance and business institutions. The contributors discuss the role of local institutions in coordinating business activities and unleashing entrepreneurship, arguing that the sudden growth of new firms and industries is facilitated by changes in business behaviour and institutions. Initial private exchange and investment in an environment of ill-functioning markets are shown to depend on local networks and local business culture which, in turn, rely on local tax regimes setting incentives for inherited bureaucracies to engage in economic transformation. Finally, the book establishes local institutions and local governance as crucial dimensions of China's emerging business system. Contributing to the theory of endogenous institutional change, The Chinese Economy in the 21st Century will be of great appeal to academics and students interested in management, comparative business systems, transition economics, evolutionary economics, Chinese studies and Asian studies

Abstract: This book examines the interrelations between entrepreneurship, industrial location and economic growth. Thus, it covers a wide range of topics, including: the economic impact of entrepreneurship; industry dynamics; growth and survival of firms; firm location and globalisation patterns; and agglomeration and growth. The chapters in the book demonstrate the need to adopt a broad perspective that combines insights from different strands of literature if we are to better understand these complex economic phenomena. In addition, the original empirical evidence from a range of different countries provides a sound foundation for developing appropriate guidance for policymakers. The contributions in this book will appeal to practitioners and policymakers interested in entrepreneurship, industrial location and industry dynamics. It will also be of interest to economic geographers, environmental scientists and local planners

Abstract: Enlargement of the EU increases economic diversity and inequality between countries and regions, making cohesion difficult. This book attempts to provide a deeper understanding of the interaction between investment, knowledge spillovers and entrepreneurship; a crucial factor in reducing the economic disparity caused by the geographic expansion of the EU. The book offers new empirical evidence regarding the spatial dimension of investment, entrepreneurship and knowledge spillovers, and features both individual and cross-country analyses. FDI in accession countries is examined, as is the effect of EU integration on own-country investment. Innovative methodologies and unique new models are then used to provide lessons and policy implications for economic growth prospects in the recently enlarged EU. Researchers and policy makers working in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, economic growth, economic integration and regional development will find this book to be of great interest. It will also be warmly welcomed by students and academics with an interest in European studies, international economics and regional and urban economics
