Abstract: In den vergangenen Jahren ist die Anzahl internationaler Studierender und Wissenschaftler*innen in Deutschland stetig angestiegen. Ausgehend von ihrer ethnologischen Forschung in der Universitätsstadt Göttingen geht Antonie Fuhse der Frage nach, wie junge Wissenschaftler*innen aus Indien ihre multiplen sozialen Verortungen während ihres Studiums beziehungsweise ihrer Promotion aushandelten. Sie setzt sich besonders damit auseinander, welche Rolle Mobilität in der Aushandlung normativer Vorstellungen von der Gestaltung des Lebensverlaufs und der Zukunft spielt. In diesem Buch wird das Konzept des ‚Regimes der akademischen Mobilität‘ entwickelt und in der Analyse angewandt, um die vielfältigen Akteure, Diskurse und Strukturen herauszustellen, die an der Mobilität von Studierenden und Wissenschaftler*innen beteiligt sind und Ungleichheiten im Zugang zu internationaler Mobilität erzeugen. Die Autorin zeigt, dass Alter, die Herkunft aus der indischen Mittelschicht und Gender in ihrer Interaktion einen großen Einfluss darauf hatten, warum die jungen Wissenschaftler*innen nach Deutschland kamen, welche Erfahrungen sie in Göttingen machten und was sie sich für ihre Zukunft erhofften. Sie stellt heraus, dass die Mobilität auf vielfache Weise mit dem Heiraten verknüpft war, und rückt damit ein Thema in den Fokus, das in der Erforschung internationaler Studierender und Wissenschaftler*innen bisher wenig beachtet wurde.

Abstract: This dissertation explores the values and practices of young, middle-class South Koreans and what it means for them to live a good life. Based on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork, it attends to the pathways and life trajectories of young adults living, studying and working in Seoul, the country’s economic, political, cultural and educational centre. Due to changing economic conditions, it appears to be increasingly difficult for young people today to reproduce middle-class status. In public discourse, these difficulties are expressed in the terms ‘Spec’ or ‘Give-up Generation’. At the same time, young people are starting to question middle-class lifestyles and values and turn to practices which emphasise different standards. The author illustrates how young adults negotiate middle-class ideals by contextualising the values around four key themes – education, marriage, consumption, and work. In doing so, she explores her interlocutors’ thoughts and reflections about middle-class values through a theoretical and methodological framework centred on ordinary ethics and the everyday use of money. This ethnography sheds light on the complex and heterogenous ways young people in South Korea conceptualise and realise the good in their lives, and it focuses attention on the explicitness of ethics and the relationship between money and values in these young Seoulites’ everyday lives and social relations.

Abstract: Ausgehend von der Frage nach der Relevanz von Geisterpraktiken untersucht Paul Christensen die bedeutsamen Rollen von Geistern in der kambodschanischen Gesellschaft. Die wichtigen thematischen Schwerpunkte legt er auf die Verarbeitung der traumatischen Vergangenheit, die religiöse Identifikation der Kambodschaner_innen, die politische Ermächtigung der Eliten durch spirituelle Legitimationsstrategien und die lebendige Ritualpraxis der Geistmedien in Kambodscha. Durch den ethnologischen Zugang einer 13-monatigen Feldforschung und eine innovative, an die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie angelehnte Methodik kann im Sinne einer (wieder-)‚verzauberten Moderne‘ ein emisches Verständnis dieser religiösen Phänomene gewonnen werden, die in ähnlicher Weise in ganz Südostasien auftreten. Die Arbeit liefert einen wegweisenden Beitrag zum wissenschaftlichen Verständnis von Geistern. Dabei überzeugt sie nicht nur mit der Anschlussfähigkeit der Methodik; die Ethnografie liefert Beschreibungen zu gesellschaftlichen Themen wie Macht, Existenz, Religion, Heilung, Liebe oder Trauer, die nicht nur das ‚Andere‘ plausibel machen, sondern auch das ‚Eigene‘ in Frage stellen.

Abstract: On the basis on solid fieldwork in northern Nigeria including participant observation, interviews with Izala, Sufis, and religion experts, and collection of unpublished material related to Izala, three aspects of the development of Izala past and present are analysed: its split, its relationship to Sufis, and its perception of sharīʿa re-implementation. “Field Theory” of Pierre Bourdieu, “Religious Market Theory” of Rodney Start, and “Modes of Religiosity Theory” of Harvey Whitehouse are theoretical tools of understanding the religious landscape of northern Nigeria and the dynamics of Islamic movements and groups.

Abstract: Den Fundplätzen in Hamburg-Boberg wird seit ihrer Entdeckung in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren eine Initialfunktion für die Neolithisierung in Norddeutschland zugesprochen. Durch importierte Keramik angezeigte Kontakte weisen das Untersuchungsgebiet als interkulturellen Interaktionsraum aus. Unter Berücksichtigung des gesamten Keramikinventars wird eine Neubewertung der Boberger Stationen im Neolithisierungsprozess, mittel typologischer Auswertung und archäometrischer Analytik, angestrebt.

Abstract: This research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and northern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the “Datoga problem,” but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control.

Abstract: The book offers a glimpse back in time to a Middle Sepik society, the Iatmul, first investigated by the anthropologist Gregory Bateson in the late 1920s while the feminist anthropologist Margaret Mead worked on sex roles among the neighbouring Tchambuli (Chambri) people. The author lived in the Iatmul village of Kararau in 1972/3 where she studied women’s lives, works, and knowledge in detail. She revisited the Sepik in 2015 and 2017. The book, the translation of a 1977 publication in German, is complemented by two chapters dealing with the life of the Iatmul in the 2010s. It presents rich quantitative and qualitative data on subsistence economy, marriage, and women’s knowledge concerning myths and rituals. Besides, life histories and in-depth interviews convey deep insights into women’s experiences and feelings, especially regarding their varied relationships with men in the early 1970s. Since then, Iatmul culture has changed in many respects, especially as far as the economy, religion, knowledge, and the relationship between men and women are concerned. In her afterword, the anthropologist Christiane Falck highlights some of the major topics raised in the book from a 2018 perspective, based on her own fieldwork which she commenced in 2012. Thus, the book provides the reader with detailed information about gendered lives in this riverine village of the 1970s and an understanding of the cultural processes and dynamics that have taken place since.

Abstract: The Sound State of Uzbekistan: Popular Music and Politics in the Karimov Era is a pioneering study of the intersection between popular music and state politics in Central Asia. Based on 20 months of fieldwork and archival research in Tashkent, this book explores a remarkable era in Uzbekistan's politics (2001-2016), when the Uzbek government promoted a rather unlikely candidate to the prominent position of state sound: estrada, a genre of popular music and a musical relic of socialism. The political importance it attached to estrada was matched by the establishment of an elaborate bureaucratic apparatus for state oversight. The Sound State of Uzbekistan shows the continuing legacy of Soviet concepts to frame the nexus between music, artists and the state, and explains the extraordinary potency ascribed to estrada. At the same time, it challenges classical readings of transition and also questions common binary models for researching culture in totalitarian or authoritarian states. Proposing to approach lives in music under authoritarianism as a form of normality instead, the author promotes a post-Cold War paradigm in music studies

Abstract: Wie gestalteten die Gläubigen verschiedener Konfessionen das gemeinsame Zusammenleben in einem katholisch dominierten Gebiet? Wie ging die katholische Landesobrigkeit im Zeitalter der Aufklärung mit protestantischen Untertanen um, vor allem dann, wenn das geltende Recht die Verhältnisse nicht immer genau bestimmte? Diese Studie fragt wie sich das Zusammenleben von Katholiken und Protestanten im geistlichen Fürstentum Fulda im 18. Jahrhundert gestaltete. Das Verhältnis zwischen Katholiken und Protestanten nach dem Westfälischen Frieden von 1648 ist in der internationalen Forschung der letzten Jahre verstärkt in den Fokus gerückt. Kaum beachtet wurde aber bisher das Zusammenleben von Katholiken und Protestanten im geistlichen Fürstentum Fulda im Zeitalter der Aufklärung, obwohl konfessionelle Auseinandersetzungen ebenso das Fuldaer Leben im 18. Jahrhundert prägten wie friedliche Momoente des interkonfessionellen Zusammenlebens. Anhand der beiden Oberämter Burghaun und Fischbach-Dermbach erforscht diese Studie zum einen die konfessionelle Politik der katholischen Landesobrigkeit Fulda gegenüber den protestantischen Untertanen, zum anderen die Gestaltung der interkonfessionellen Beziehungen vor Ort. Damit will die Studie einen kulturgeschichtlichen Beitrag zur Geschichte des geistlichen Fürstentums Fulda und zur Konfessionsforschung des 18. Jahrhunderts leisten.

Abstract: Wie gestaltet sich der Umgang mit umstrittenen „Objekten“ aus der deutschen Kolonialzeit in ethnologischen Museen Deutschlands und in Kamerun? Mit dieser Frage beschäftigt sich diese ethnografische Studie, die erstmals ethnologische, (völker)rechtliche, (kunst)historische und museologische Zugänge zum interdisziplinären Feld des Themas „Rückgabe“ verknüpft. Zwei aktuelle Rückgabeforderungen von Dingen aus Kamerun an ethnologische Museen in München und Berlin stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt: Tange/Schiffschnabel und Ngonnso'/Schalenträgerfigur. Die Rekonstruktion der kulturellen Biographien der umstrittenen Dinge vom 19. Jahrhundert bis heute belegt ihre Rolle als Knotenpunkte in komplexen Beziehungs- und Akteursnetzen. Diese Netzwerke verbinden auf vielfältige Weise Menschen und Institutionen in Kamerun und Deutschland sowie deren unterschiedliche Vorstellungen und Ansprüche auf diese Dinge. Rückgabeforderungen wirken, so die These, wie ein Vergrößerungsglas, welches divergierende Dingverständnisse und Ontologien zutage treten lässt.

Abstract: Welche Machtdynamiken entstehen, wenn zwei historisch gewachsene Herrschaftsprinzipien wie Adel und Kolonialismus sich kreuzen? Anhand der Biographie Adolf Friedrichs zu Mecklenburg beleuchtet die Studie einen Zusammenhang, der weder von der Adels- noch der Kolonialforschung bislang behandelt wurde. Adolf Friedrich zu Mecklenburg (1873-1969) konnte über alle politischen Umbrüche des 20. Jahrhunderts hinweg vom Kaiserreich bis zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland seine elitäre gesellschaftliche Position bewahren. Durch seine privilegierte Position konnte der Mecklenburger Herzog einen einflussreichen Status als »Afrika-Experte« für sich beanspruchen. Als Forschungsreisender, Gouverneur von Togo oder später als Vertreter der entstehenden Entwicklungszusammenarbeit passte er seine »Expertise« immer wieder den sich wandelnden Umständen an. Die Studie gibt Einblicke in Transformationsprozesse von Eliten im 20. Jahrhundert und legt den Blick frei für historische Kontinuitäten.

Abstract: Der grenzüberschreitende Nationalpark W liegt in Westafrika im Dreiländereck von Benin, Burkina Faso und Niger. 1927 unter französischer Kolonialherrschaft gegründet, erfolgte 2002 die Ausrufung zum ersten grenzüberschreitenden Biosphärenreservat Afrikas. Trotz diverser partizipativer Maßnahmen der Parkverwaltung gefährden Feldbau, grenzüberschreitende mobile Weidewirtschaft (Transhumanz), Wilderei und Holzeinschlag den Nationalpark. Konflikte um die Nutzung von Land und anderen kritischen Ressourcen entstehen insbesondere in der überregulierten Pufferzone. Dieses Buch fragt, wie Überwachungseinheiten in diesem Kontext operieren. Es beschreibt typische Situationen des Zusammentreffens zwischen Parküberwachung und lokalen Akteuren in drei unterschiedlichen Arenen: der Kernzone des Parks, dem Anrainerdorf und lokalen politischen Foren. Die dichten Fallstudien verdeutlichen die konfliktreichen Prozesse, in denen die Idee „Nationalpark“ von Akteuren der Parkverwaltung und ihren lokalen Mitarbeitern in den Kontext der Baumwollstadt Banikoara übersetzt wird und wie der Nationalpark in diesen Prozessen zu einer lokalen Bedeutung gelangt. Das Buch, das auf einer vierzehnmonatigen Feldforschung zwischen 2008 und 2010 basiert, setzt neue Impulse für die Weiterentwicklung partizipativer Ansätze in Ressourcenschutzgebieten und benennt die Herausforderungen staatlichen Handelns im Spannungsfeld von Ressourcenschutz und cash crop-orientierter ländlicher Entwicklungspolitik.

Abstract: The discovery of oil in Uganda in 2006 ushered in an oil-age era with new prospects of unforeseen riches. However, after an initial exploration boom developments stalled. Unlike other countries with major oil discoveries, Uganda has been slow in developing its oil. In fact, over ten years after the first discoveries, there is still no oil. During the time of the research for this book between 2012 and 2015, Uganda’s oil had not yet fully materialised but was becoming. The overarching characteristic of this research project was waiting for the big changes to come: a waiting characterised by indeterminacy. There is a timeline but every year it gets expanded and in 2018 having oil still seems to belong to an uncertain future. This book looks at the waiting period as a time of not-yet-ness and describes the practices of future- and resource-making in Uganda. How did Ugandans handle the new resource wealth and how did they imagine their future with oil to be? This ethnography is concerned with Uganda’s oil and the way Ugandans anticipated different futures with it: promising futures of wealth and development and disturbing futures of destruction and suffering. The book works out how uncertainty was an underlying feature of these anticipations and how risks and risk discourses shaped the imaginations of possible futures. Much of the talk around the oil involved the dichotomy of blessing or curse and it was not clear, which one the oil would be. Rather than adding another assessment of what the future with oil will be like, this book describes the predictions and prophesies as an essential part of how resources are being made. This ethnography shows how various actors in Uganda, from the state, the oil industry, the civil society, and the extractive communities, have tried to negotiate their position in the oil arena. Annika Witte argues in this book that by establishing their risks and using them as power resources actors can influence the becoming of oil as a resource and their own place in a petro-future. The book offers one of the first ethnographic accounts of Uganda’s oil and the negotiations that took place in an oil state to be.

Abstract: El título de la presente tesis doctoral, El museo como inspirador de valores y armonizador social en tiempos difíciles, es ciertamente indeterminado y podría haber dado lugar a una gran variedad de estudios concretos muy diferentes. El que tiene ante sí el lector, ha tratado de examinar cuál ha sido la reacción de los museos españoles al complicado contexto de crisis económica que se ha dado en nuestro país a lo largo de los últimos ocho años, entre 2008 y 2016. Más concretamente, hemos realizado un análisis de determinadas programaciones especiales y de corte social que han sido desarrolladas por algunos museos dependientes de la Secretaría de Estado de Cultura del Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte español. Tales programaciones inspiraron, al tiempo que consolidaron, el plan Museos + Sociales que fue publicado en 2015 en el seno del mencionado ministerio. Decidimos abordar, de manera particular, las programaciones relacionadas con dos problemas agudizados a consecuencia de la crisis económica: el desempleo y el sinhogarismo, a pesar de que también incluimos otras relacionadas con diversos asuntos, siempre vinculados a Museos + Sociales. Los museos que han configurado nuestros estudios de caso han sido el Museo Arqueológico Nacional, el Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas, el Museo Lázaro Galdiano y el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, todos ellos ubicados en Madrid
