    Abstract: Reuniting white America after Vietnam. "If war among the whites brought peace and liberty to the blacks," Frederick Douglass asked in 1875, peering into the nation's future, "what will peace among the whites bring?" The answer then and now, after civil war and civil rights: a white reunion disguised as a veterans' reunion. How White Men Won the Culture Wars shows how a broad contingent of white men--conservative and liberal, hawk and dove, vet and nonvet--transformed the Vietnam War into a staging ground for a post-civil rights white racial reconciliation. Conservatives could celebrate white vets as deracinated embodiments of the nation. Liberals could treat them as minoritized heroes whose voices must be heard. Erasing Americans of color, Southeast Asians, and women from the war, white men could agree, after civil rights and feminism, that they had suffered and deserved more. From the POW/MIA and veterans' mental health movements to Rambo and "Born in the U.S.A.," they remade their racial identities for an age of color blindness and multiculturalism in the image of the Vietnam vet. No one wins in a culture war--except, Joseph Darda argues, white men dressed in army green.

    Abstract: When women took to the streets during the mass protests of the Arab Spring, the subject of feminism in the Middle East and North Africa returned to the international spotlight. In the subsequent years, countless commentators treated the region's gender inequality as a consequence of fundamentally cultural or religious problems. In so doing, they overlooked the specifically political nature of these women's activism. Moving beyond such culturalist accounts, this book turns to the relations of power in regional and international politics to understand women's struggles for their rights. Based on over a hundred extensive personal narratives from women of different generations in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon, Nicola Pratt traces women's activism from national independence through to the Arab uprisings, arguing that activist women are critical geopolitical actors. Weaving together these personal accounts with the ongoing legacies of colonialism, Embodying Geopolitics demonstrates how the production and regulation of gender is integrally bound up with the exercise and organization of geopolitical power, with consequences for women's activism and its effects..

    Abstract: "Based on a wide range of South Slav sources and previously unpublished, often confidential, documents from communist state archives, as well as on the author's own on-the-ground experience, Balkan Idols explores the political role and influence of Serbian Orthodox, Croatian Catholic, and Yugoslav Muslim religious organizations over the course of the last century. Vjekoslav Perica emphatically rejects the notion that a "clash of civilizations" has played a central role in fomenting aggression. He finds no compelling evidence of an upsurge in religious fervor among the general population. Rather, he concludes, the primary religious players in the conflicts have been activist clergy. This activism, Perica argues, allowed the clergy to assume political power without the accountability faced by democratically elected officials."--BOOK JACKET.

    Abstract: Bemerkung des Integrationsfonds: Bades grundlegendes Buch umfaßt Beiträge von 33 ExpertInnen und informiert umfassend über das Thema "Migration". Der erste Teil behandelt deutsche Auswanderer in Europa und Übersee. Die Auswanderung nach Osten der Siebenbürger Sachsen und der Banater und Sathmarer Schwaben bis zu den unter Stalin nach Westsibirien deportierten Wolga-Deutschen. Die überseeische Auswanderung, die im 19.Jahrhundert ein Massenexodus wurde, vor allem in die Vereinigten Staaten, aber auch nach Kanada, Lateinamerika, Australien und Neuseeland. Der zweite Teil behandelt die Wanderungsbewegungen in umgekehrter Richtung. Die Spannweite reicht vom Schicksal der Roma und Sinti in Deutschland über Glaubensflüchtlinge der frühen Neuzeit bis zu den "Ostjuden" im Kaiserreich, von den "Ruhrpolen" und "ausländischen Wanderarbeitern" über den Ausländereinsatz im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland bis hin zu jenen Arbeitssklaven der NS-Kriegsmaschinerie, die nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die Masse der "Displaced Persons" stellten. Die jüngste Vergangenheit: Integration der Vertriebenen und Flüchtlinge, Wandel der "Gastarbeiterfrage" der 60er Jahre zur Einwanderungsthematik der 80er Jahre und die neue Einwanderungssituation im vereinten Deutschland werden hier bilanziert und schließlich die aktuelle Lage untersucht. Die Konturen einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft, wie die Grundlinien einer tragfähigen Einwanderungspolitik, sowie die Zukunftserwartungen in Deutschland bis zum Jahr 2030. Der Herausgeber und Mitautor ist Professor für Neueste Geschichte und Leiter des Instituts für Migrationsforschung und interkulturelle Studien (IMIS) der Universität Osnabrück.
