    Abstract: The volume "Schule und Unterricht im digitalen Wandel" (School and Teaching in the Digital Transformation) explores perspectives of reconstructive-sensual research for the study of school and teaching in the digital transformation. Four empirical studies are presented and their findings are classified theoretically and methodologically. The studies are interested in the changes as well as the stability of practices in the classroom when digital media are used. And they investigate how students and teachers interpret the transformation processes that accompany digitization. The research perspectives generated are contoured in greater depth by the discussion of the studies' findings with regard to central questions of digital transformation and its research at the end of the volume
    Abstract: Der Band „Schule und Unterricht im digitalen Wandel“ lotet Perspektiven einer rekonstruktiv-sinnverstehenden Forschung für die Untersuchung von Schule und Unterricht im digitalen Wandel aus. Es werden vier empirische Studien vorgestellt und ihre Befunde theoretisch und methodisch eingeordnet. Die Studien interessieren sich für die Veränderungen wie auch die Stabilität von Praktiken im Unterricht, wenn digitale Medien genutzt werden. Und sie untersuchen, wie Schüler:innen und Lehrkräfte die mit der Digitalisierung einhergehenden Transformationsprozesse deuten. Die generierten Forschungsperspektiven werden durch die Diskussion der Erträge der Studien im Hinblick auf zentrale Fragen des digitalen Wandels und seine Erforschung am Ende des Bandes vertiefend konturiert

    Abstract: Bildung und Ökonomie sind wechselseitig aufeinander verwiesen: Es wird keine Autonomie der Bildung ohne ressourcielle Absicherung geben, ebensowenig wie eine moderne industrialisierte Gesellschaft mit Blick auf ihre Reproduktionslogiken auf die Produktivkraft „Bildung“ verzichten kann. Am Beispiel bildungstheoretisch fundierter und empirischer Studien zu den differenten pädagogischen und ökonomischen Logiken innerhalb der „Neuen Steuerung“ des Bildungssystems wird im vorliegenden Band aufgezeigt, dass es sinnvoll erscheint, sich weder vereinseitigend dem Pol des ökonomischen oder dem des pädagogischen Ideals zuzuschlagen, noch die im Verhältnis von Ökonomie und Bildung angelegten Ambivalenzen zu leugnen. Demgegenüber wird versucht, sich in einem analytischen Zugriff aus der Perspektive der Governance-Forschung eben jenen Ambivalenzen systematisch zu widmen. Neben der Darstellung, wie sich digital gestützte Bildungs- und Lernprozesse im häuslichen Lernumfeld gestalten, wurden Faktoren analysiert, die einen Einfluss auf das elterliche Unterstützungsverhalten haben. Die empirischen Befunde geben Aufschluss über die Notwendigkeit einer handlungspraktischen Intervention zur Nutzung digitaler Bildungsmedien an der Schnittstelle von Elternhaus und Schule. Dazu wurden auf Basis der Forschungsergebnisse medienpädagogische Empfehlungen abgeleitet, die Eltern, Lehrer und die Bildungspolitik adressieren.     Abstract: This book describes research undertaken by leading Australian researcher in Indigenous communities. While the chapters are Australian in their focus, the issues that are discussed are similar to those in other countries where there are indigenous people. In most cases, in Australia and internationally, Indigenous learners are not succeeding in school, thus making the transition into work and adulthood quite tenuous in terms of mainstream measures. The importance of being literate and numerate are critical in success in school and life in general, thus making this collection an important contribution to the international literature. The collection of works describes a wide range of projects where the focus has been on improving the literacy and numeracy outcomes for Indigenous students. The chapters take various approaches to improving these outcomes, and have very different foci. These foci include aspects of literacy, numeracy, curriculum leadership, ICTs, whole school planning, policy, linguistics and Indigenous perspectives. Most of the chapters report on large scale projects that have used some innovation in their focus. The book draws together these projects so that a more connected sense of the complexities and diversity of approaches can be gleaned.

    Abstract: Due to the development of the international Education for All and Education for Sustainable Development movements, for which UNESCO is the lead agency, there has been an increasing emphasis on the power of education and schooling to help build more just and equitable societies. This seeks to give everyone the opportunity to develop their talents to the full, regardless of characteristics such as gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity, religious persuasion, or regional location. As enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights over five decades ago, everyone has the right to receive a high quality and relevant education. In order to try to achieve this ideal, many countries are substantially re-engineering their education systems with an increasing emphasis on promoting equity and fairness, and on ensuring that everyone has access to a high quality and relevant education. They are also moving away from the traditional outlook of almost exclusively stressing formal education in schools as the most valuable way in which people learn, to accepting that important and valuable learning does not just occur in formal, dedicated education institutions, but also through informal and non-formal means. Thus learning is both lifelong and life-wide. This book brings together the experience and research of 40 recognised and experienced opinion leaders in education around the world. The book investigates the most effective ways of ensuring the UNESCO aim of effective education for all people in the belief that not only should education be a right for all, but also that education and schooling has the potential to transform individual lives and to contribute to the development of more just, humane and equitable societies.

    Abstract: This cogent analysis of data on education and society from a variety of sources sets out to provide answers to scientific and policy questions on the quality of education and the way it relates to various forms of inequality in modern societies, particularly in Europe. The authors examine not only the well known cross-national PISA datasets, but also the European Social Survey and TIMSS, going further than many researchers by folding into their analyses economic, legal and historical factors. Most research up to now using the PISA data is restricted to educational research. Interesting as that educational question is, the chapters here use the PISA, and other data, to explore more profoundly the relationship between education and the various forms of inequality in European and other modern societies. The work comes from two different perspectives: one that looks at how the different characteristics of societies, their economies, and their educational systems influence the average educational achievements of specific groups of pupils, such as immigrants, in those societies, and a second, which explores how, and in what degree, the characteristics of schools, educational systems and labour-markets either hardens or softens differences in the educational outcomes of various groups of pupils. With a special feature of the book being its emphasis on comparing Asian and European countries, and with the content free of the political constraints that can often attend studies of these datasets, this book will be an vital resource for educationalists and policy-makers alike.     Abstract: In the quest for more and better lifelong learning, there is a growing awareness that qualifications systems must play a part. Some countries have started to realise that isolated developments in qualifications standards lead to uncoordinated, piecemeal systems. After reviewing the policies and practice in fifteen countries, the authors present nine broad policy responses to the lifelong learning agenda that countries have adopted and that relate directly to their national qualifications system. They also identify twenty mechanisms, or concrete linkages, between national qualifications systems and lifelong learning goals. The overall aim of this book is to provide these mechanisms as a tool for governments to use in reviewing their policy responses to lifelong learning. Evidence suggests that some mechanisms, such as those linked to credit transfer, recognition of prior learning, qualifications frameworks and stakeholder involvement, are especially powerful in promoting lifelong learning.

An important focus of this book is the interrogation of both the social and political factors that lead to different problem posing and subsequent solutions within each region.
    Abstract: It is evident that urban education has become the central focus of educators at the present time. In the U.S., for example, almost one third of all school age children attend schools in large urban school districts. It is in these urban schools where the diversity of cultures and languages is highest and where student learning is most problematic. What has emerged from recent work to improve urban schools is the insight that there is no one-size-fits-all panacea. Rather, we have discovered that the local context shapes, in critically important ways, what will be effective at the school level. The universality of the problematics with urban education, together with the importance of understanding the local, or situated, context of improvement interventions, brings into sharp focus the importance and timeliness of an undertaking like the International Handbook of Urban Education. An important focus of the International Handbook of Urban Education will be the interrogation of both the social and political factors that lead to different problem posing and subsequent solutions within each region. An important question to be answered, for example, is what it takes in terms of resources, political will and policy actions to improve urban education.

This desire for better results requires that better methods for their measurement exist so that they can be better understood and, ultimately, improved. Several disciplines have already developed instruments for this purpose. The educational sciences have been particularly active in this field. Other disciplines, such as sociology, economics, management, information technology, and political science are also making significant contributions to the emergence of a better form of governance. Before one can benefit from these developments, one first must know about their existence and analyse and question them. The proposed book is unique in that it brings together a wide range of disciplines and experience from several countries. What are possible models of governance? How do we measure their effects in terms of efficiency and equity? What type of contribution can financial and information systems make?     Abstract: Looking across national contexts and drawing on ethnographic studies of schools in the UK and Australia, the book explores the implications of the contemporary education policy context and processes and practices inside schools for students as learners and for educational inequalities. The book uses tools offered by post-structural theory to read ethnographic data and show how the discourses that circulate inside schools at once mobilise and elide gender, sexuality, social class, ability, disability, race, ethnicity, religious and cultural belongings at the same time as they open up and close down 'who' students can be as learners. In demonstrating these processes the book offers new insights into how these 'truths' about students and learners are created and how they come to be bound so tightly to the educational inclusions, privileges and successes that some students enjoy and the exclusions, disadvantages and 'failures' that other students face.
