    Abstract: "An untold story that reshapes our understanding of Chinese and Tibetan history. From 1956 to 1962, devastating military conflicts took place in China's southwestern and northwestern regions. Official record at the time scarcely made mention of the campaign, and in the years since only lukewarm acknowledgment of the violence has surfaced. When the Iron Bird Flies, by Jianglin Li, breaks this decades-long silence to reveal for the first time a comprehensive and explosive picture of the six years that would prove definitive in modern Tibetan and Chinese history. The CCP referred to the campaign as "suppressing the Tibetan rebellion." It would lead to the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in India, as well as the Tibetan diaspora in 1959, though the battles lasted three additional years after these events. Featuring key figures in modern Chinese history, the battles waged in this period covered a vast geographical region. This book offers a portrait of chaos, deception, heroism, and massive loss. Beyond the significant death toll across the Tibetan regions, the war also destroyed most Tibetan monasteries in a concerted effort to eradicate local religion and scholarship. Despite being considered a military success, to this day, the operations in the agricultural regions remain unknown. As large numbers of Tibetans have self-immolated in recent years to protest Chinese occupation, Li shows that the largest number of cases occurred in the sites most heavily affected by this hidden war. She argues persuasively that the events described in this book will shed more light on our current moment, and will help us understand the unrelenting struggle of the Tibetan people for their freedom"--

Rezension (ekz): Der Autor hat über drei Jahrzehnte Erfahrungen in der Sowjetunion sowie in Russland gesammelt, u.a. als "Spiegel"-Korrespondent und Leiter der russischen Vertretung der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Moskau. Für diesen Text hat er die Form eines Essays gewählt und die Hauptkapitel folgendermassen überschrieben: "Das Zarenreich", "Das Rätereich" und "Das Präsidentenreich". Er handelt darin kurz und knapp die russisch-sowjetische Geschichte ab, jeweils mit kurzen Hinweisen auf wissenschaftliche Publikationen und Zitaten aus der russischen Literatur versehen. Es ist wieder einmal der Versuch, Russland zu verstehen bzw. die Entwicklung über dreihundert Jahre verständlich zu machen. - Ein Essay soll zum Denken anregen, zur Diskussion. Das gelingt durchaus. Wichtig ist aber, dass der Autor nicht nur ein ausgewiesener Kenner der russischen Gesellschaft ist, sondern dass er wohltuend ausgewogen über Russland schreibt. Schon das wird für manchen Leser diskussionswürdig sein. (2-3)

Im vorliegenden nur 160 Seiten starken Buch versucht er, das Gedankengut des chinesischen Führers tiefer zu durchdringen. Er unterteilt dieses dabei in 9 Kapitel, in denen er den Werdegang, die Werte und die politischen Ideen Xi's nachzeichnet. Er geht wiederholt auf die Entwicklungsgeschichte der kommunistischen Partei unter den Führern Mao Zedong und Deng Xiaoping ein und vergleicht Xi mit ihnen. Der Text lässt Kritik und Distanz vermissen und setzt Vorwissen über die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse Chinas voraus, ist aber gut lesbar. (3)

    Abstract: This volume is an updated and expanded version of the authors original book, first published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and based on his cum laude doctoral dissertation. That volume discussed how the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence drowned in the first war between a communist and a non-aligned state. This new edition reproduces the original text, but supplements it considerably in light of subsequent developments and official records and reports only later released or leaked to the public. It places Sino-Indian relations in the wider, current context of the rise of China, the position of Tibet and the disorganised state of Asia. The border dispute did not prevent substantial economic relations developing between the two countries and visits taking place at the highest political level. But it still gives rise to almost daily incursions, and in the current climate, the risk of a clash is growing, as forces have been strengthened and most of the Line of Actual Control has not been demarcated. This thought-provoking volume sheds light on what is still a complex and uneasy relationship

    Abstract: Die Volksrepublik China hat 1,3 Milliarden Einwohner. Davon gehören 8,4 % zu 55 nationalen Minderheiten. Sie bewohnen 60 % des Staatsgebietes - insbesondere in den strategisch wichtigen Grenzregionen. Nach einem längeren historischen Überblick der staatlichen Nationalitätenpolitik "zwischen Sinisierung und Diskriminierung" stellt Klemens (siehe vom selben Autor: "Dalai Lama", BA 6/08) diese Völker, die er in mehrere Gruppen einteilt (tibeto-birmanisch, mongolisch, tungusisch etc.), einzeln vor. Bei den Tibetern und Uiguren finden sich längere Darlegungen auch zur zentralstaatlichen Repression und zum Widerstand gegen Beijing. Die meisten anderen ethnischen Gruppen, die zum Teil sehr knapp porträtiert werden, sind inzwischen sinisiert oder akzeptieren die Vorherrschaft der Han-Chinesen. Es folgt ein abschließender Artikel zur Renaissance religiöser Gemeinschaften. Klemens plädiert für eine tolerante Nationalitätenpolitik, bei der den Minderheiten Sonderautonomie-Rechte gewährt werden. Nur so könnten sezessionistische Bewegungen wirksam geschwächt werden, ohne Minderheitenrechte zu verletzen. (2 S) (Andreas Ufen)
