    Abstract: The film gives a general survey of the culture of the Saharan Kanuri inhabiting the oasis of Fachi. It is conceived as an approach to a type of culture determined by the extreme ecological conditions of the Sahara. Presenting a typical Kanuri family, the film shows chiefly the economic system, the trading with caravans of nomadic Tuareg as well as scenes from the social and religious life of the inhabitans of Fachi.

    Abstract: Nomadische Tuareg kommen mit Kamelkarawanen nach Fachi, um von den seßhaften Kanuri Salz und Datteln gegen Hirse, Käse, Ziegen u. a. einzuhandeln. Kleinhandel auf dem Karawanenplatz. Tauschhandel in den Häusern (Datteln gegen Hirse).
    Abstract: Tuareg nomads arrive with caravans of camels at Fachi in order to trade with the sedentary Kanuri for salt and dates. The Tuaregs camp on the caravan-place, in the shelter of big bunches of grass carried on the trip as food for the camels. The film shows different kinds of trading between Kanuri and Tuareg people. One man exchanges dates and money for a young goat. We then see a Kanuri and a Tuareg men effecting the sale of salt; shortly after the Tuareg transports his bars of salt by camel from the saltern to the caravan-place. The small trade is carried on chiefly by women and girls. A Kanuri man buys for one hundred francs dried goat-cheese, a woman obtains goat-cheese in barter of salt and dates. The important barter of dates for millet is carried on in the Kanuri man's house. Each partner measures with the same vessel the other one's product. On the caravan-place the salt bars are wrapped up to be loaded onto the camels.

    Abstract: Die Roggengarben werden auf der im Freien gelegenen Tenne ausgebreitet und in Nachbarschaftshilfe mit Flegeln gedroschen. Die zwei Dreschgruppen bestehen jeweils aus fünf Männern, die jeweils in zwei Reihen dicht hintereinander arbeiten. Gemeinsame Mahlzeit als Gegengabe für die Arbeit. Das Auffinden einer mit Stroh ausgestopften Schafhaut leitet eine zeremonielle Brauchhandlung ein: Trauerzugparodie, Verbrennen der Schafhaut, Tanz.
    Abstract: The sheaves spread out are treshed with flails. The threshers are working in teams of five persons arranged in two lines close to each other. The discovery of a stuffed sheepskin is the beginning of a ceremonial threshing custom. After nightfall the sheepskin is burnt in the open air.

    Abstract: Der vom Webstuhl heruntergenommene Stoff wird in eine außerhalb des Dorfes gelegene Walkemühle gebracht, dort in eine Holzmulde gelegt und von zwei durch eine Nockenwelle angetriebenen Holzhämmer geschlagen (gewalkt). Zwischendurch wird der Stoff mit heißem Wasser begossen. Nach dem Walken wird er zum Trocknen in die Sonne gelegt.
    Abstract: The fabric removed from the loom is taken to a fulling-mill outside the village. There it is placed into a wooden trough and beaten (fulled) by two mallets operated by cam shaft. Ocasionally hot water is sprinkled on the cloth. After fulling the cloth is left in the sun to dry.

    Abstract: Rehearsing the légong dance: Opening dance by the lady-in-waiting condong; then dancing together with the two légong dancers. The dance is accompanied only by the instruments indispensable for the dialogue with the dancers: conical drums, cymbals, punctuating gongs, and the metallophon leading the tune.

    Abstract: Im Wald geschlagene Hölzer werden zugerichtet und mit Lianen zu einem trichterförmigen Gerät mit langer Stange zusammengebunden. Frauen graben damit tief im Boden sitzende Esouma-Wurzeln aus. Im Lager werden einige Stücke in der Glut des Feuers geröstet.
    Abstract: A man named Yassi makes a tool djo. For this purpose he requires a stick about six metres long and four flat pieces of wood which he splits off from a suitable tree in the forest. In the camp he shapes the pieces of wood, tapers one end off to a point. He then splits one end of the long stick into four pieces, inserts the pieces of wood into the openings, and ties the whole so as to form a funnel. Two girls then take the finished tool and go out into the forest. They discover an esouma plant, which has a root going up to six metres into the ground, and they dig out the root piece by piece by use of the funnel. Back in the camp the girls prepare the roots to eat.

    Abstract: Der fruchtbare Boden wird freigelegt, aufgehackt, zu kleinen Beeten geformt, gedüngt und eingesät (Luzerne). Brunnenwasser wird mit Eimern auf die Beete gegossen. Ein anderer Garten wird mit einem Ziehbrunnen (Prinzip des Schaduf) bewässert.
    Abstract: In the garden the layer of sand covering the fertile soil is removed from the piece of ground to be sown with lucerne. The soil is turned with the hoe, then small seed-beds are shaped with the hands. Fertilizer is squattered on and mixed with the earth. Water is fetched in buckets from the well and poured on the seed-beds covered with a piece of mat to distribute the water evenly and to prevent the seed being swept off. A second garden is watered by a draw-well operating on the principle of the shaduf.

    Abstract: Ein kleiner Wasserlauf wird durch mehrere rasch errichtete Dämme aufgestaut, die Staubecken werden ausgeschöpft, die zurückbleibenden Fische mit einem Buschmesser erschlagen. Einige Frauen nehmen ein ausgiebiges Bad. Die gesäuberten Fische werden im Lager in Blätterpackungen in der Glut des Herdfeuers geröstet und verzehrt.
    Abstract: Women, girls, and children leave a Pygmy camp to go fishing. Arriving at a small river they select an approprate place where they set up two enclosures. They then scoop out the water confined by the enclosures, perceiving a fish, they kill it by a stroke of their knives. A great stir is caused by a cat fish giving electric shocks. When the women have fished out the backwater, they bathe in a small river, then they scale and gut the caught fish. In the camp the fish are wrapped in leaves, roasted and eaten.

    Abstract: Verschiedene Arbeitsabläufe der Tangfischerei bei Niedrigwasser. Gefischt wird zu Fuß am Strand oder im Wasser mit einem Netzsack, der an einen Holzreifen mit Stiel angeknüpft ist (Frauen), sowie von Booten aus mit Rechen und Bootshaken (Männer). Der gesammelte Seetang wird entweder auf Tragen oder mit Ochsenkarren zum Trockenplatz geschafft.
    Abstract: The film shows the fishing of sea tang, carried on at low water, when the rocks stand up out of the water and boats and rafts may easily pass. The women fish on foot on the beach or in the water, the men from boats. The collected sea tang is carried to the drying-ground with hand-barrows or with ox-carts.

Außer den allgemein üblichen Bräuchen und Gelübden (Prozession mit Traggerüsten, Umkreisen der Kapelle zu Fuß, Opfergaben, Exvotos, Raketen, Feuerwerk usw.) findet hier zusätzlich noch ein Tanzwettstreit statt.
    Abstract: The romaria of S. Joao d'Arga takes place on August 29th. The patron saint is John the Baptiste. In addition to the widespread customs and vows (procession with the carrying of wooden frames, walking round the chapel, offerings, ex votos, rockets, firework, etc.) a dance contest here takes place, too.
