Abstract: It may seem odd to consider company culture when talking about network automation, but like anyone else in your organization, network engineers want to work with like-minded people who care what they do and how they do it. Culture is about optimizing a human system and improving communication so that all three aspects of your DevOps environment-tools, processes, and people-work in harmony. This lesson shows you how to assess your team and its place in the organization. You'll also learn how to "embrace failure" by having a game plan for learning from failure when it does happen, and discover how to enhance your personal skills and education on the job.

Abstract: Unfortunately, making decisions is not as simple as you saying "yes" or "no" to your team. Unlike most other compilations of English words, the complexity of software mandates that it is the creation of a group, and therefore it is a reflection of the decisions that the group makes. In some cases a Big Boss can dictate decisions. Unluckily, you are not the Big Boss, and you must enable your team to find ways to say no to the things they love. Here's how to get the job done.

Abstract: DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) have emerged in recent years as solutions for managing operations in IT and software development. Is one method better than the other? Will one of them eventually win out? This article explains why these two disciplines-in both practice and philosophy-are much more alike than you may think. Humans have been thinking about better ways to operate things for millennia, but despite all of this effort and thought, running enterprise software operations well remains elusive for many organizations. In this article, IT operations experts provide the key tenets of DevOps and SRE, compare and contrast the two, and explain the incentives necessary to successfully adopt either approach.

Abstract: Mentors are commonly assigned to junior members of a team, such as new hires straight out of school or student interns. Many organizations use mentors as part of their onboarding process for all new hires. Sometimes the mentor is another junior person on the team, perhaps herself only a year or two into the organization; someone who can still clearly remember the onboarding or internship process herself, and can closely relate to the new person. Other times the mentor is a senior engineer who can act as a technical mentor in addition to helping the new hire get up to speed on the process. In a healthy organization, this onboarding mentorship role is used as an opportunity for both parties. The mentor gets the chance to see what it is like to have responsibility for another person, and the mentee gets an overseer who is focused on him alone, without other reports clamoring for his mentor's attention.

Abstract: Neural networks are at the very core of deep learning. They are versatile, powerful, and scalable, making them ideal to tackle large and highly complex Machine Learning tasks, such as classifying billions of images (e.g., Google Images), powering speech recognition services (e.g., Apple's Siri), recommending the best videos to watch to hundreds of millions of users every day (e.g., YouTube), or learning to beat the world champion at the game of Go by examining millions of past games and then playing against itself (DeepMind's AlphaGo). This lesson introduces artificial neural networks, starting with a quick tour of the very first ANN architectures, then covering topics such as training neural nets, recurrent neural networks, and reinforcement learning. This lesson will clarify what neural networks are and why you may want to use them.

Abstract: "Apache Cassandra is an open-source NoSQL database that specializes in speed, scale, and uptime. With technical features based on Dynamo and Google BigTable, Cassandra is one of the most widely used distributed data storage systems available. If you've got more data than can fit on one server, uptime is important to you, and if you're working with data that changes rapidly, then Cassandra is a database to think about. This tutorial provides a complete introduction to Cassandra. Not only will you understand how Cassandra distinguishes itself from relational databases and other NoSQL stores, you'll learn enough of the Java API to get started writing code. The course explores Cassandra's unique tabular data model; digs into the internal performance of each node in a Cassandra database--the read and write path; explains the operational responsibilities for maintaining a Cassandra cluster; and guides you through writing Java code that writes to and reads from a Cassandra database. If you're a developer or architect just getting started with Cassandra, or someone considering using a non-relational data store, this video tutorial will illuminate the capabilities of this massively popular NoSQL database."--Resource description page.

Abstract: Innovation is inherently disruptive when it comes to new products and services, especially for companies forced to react to developments like Google and the iPhone. In this O'Reilly report, Mike Barlow investigates how startups and large companies alike are looking to keep up with the pace of technological innovation today. Disruptive innovation doesn't always involve a new product or service. Creating new a business model or new market for an existing product can have the same effect. A couple of years ago, a small platform-as-a-service company repurposed an internal project as a virtual shipping container called Docker-a classic "pivot" story. With this report, you'll explore the different challenges and opportunities faced by startups and mature companies during the innovation process. The stakes are high. Many tech giants that dominated the scene 25 years ago, such as Wang Laboratories and the Digital Electronics Corporation, have since been disrupted out of existence by sharper, faster, bigger, or more agile rivals. Mike Barlow is an award-winning journalist, author, and communications strategy consultant. Since launching his own firm, Cumulus Partners, he has represented major organizations in a number of industries.

Abstract: Imagine a set of simple principles that could help you to understand how parts combine to become a whole, and how each part sees the whole from its own perspective. If such principles were any good, it shouldn't matter whether we're talking about humans on a team, birds in a flock, computers in a datacenter, or cogs in a Swiss watch. A theory of cooperation ought to be pretty universal, so we should be able to apply it both to technology and to the workplace. Such principles are the subject of Promise Theory, and the focus of this insightful book. The goal of Promise Theory is to reveal the behavior of a whole from the sum of its parts, taking the viewpoint of the parts rather than the whole. In other words, it is a bottom-up, constructionist view of the world. Start Thinking in Promises and find out why this discipline works for documenting system behaviors from the bottom-up.
