    Abstract: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Abstract: Der Kampf gegen die Emanzipation von Frauen und sexuellen Minderheiten ist fester Bestandteil extrem rechter Weltanschauungen. Die Vorstellung, der "westliche" Mann werde unterdrückt und müsse sich gegen eine "Verweiblichung" zur Wehr setzen, eint große Teile des rechten Milieus. Tobias Ginsburg hat sich undercover in diese Welt überhöhter Männlichkeit begeben und traf auf selbsternannte Männerrechtler, Burschenschaftler, Nazi-Rapper, US-amerikanische "Proud Boys" und in Polen auf ein einflussreiches Institut rechts-religiöser Fundamentalisten, deren Netzwerk von den USA bis nach Russland reicht. Mit seiner Recherche gibt er einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Verflechtungen antifeministischer und rechter Ideologien und beschreibt einzelne Radikalisierungsbiografien. Mit seinen Beobachtungen macht er auch auf Strategien der Rekrutierung und Vernetzung sowie das in der Szene vorhandene Gewaltpotenzial aufmerksam.

    Abstract: "In Speculative Communities, Komporozos-Athanasiou examines the ways that financial speculation has moved beyond markets to shape fundamental aspects of our social and political lives. As ordinary people make exceptional decisions--such as the American election of a populist demagogue or the British vote to leave the European Union--they are moving from time-honored and -tested practices of governance, toward the speculative promise of a different kind of future. Even our methods of building community have shifted to the speculative realm as social media platforms enable and amplify alternative visions of the present and future-these are the "speculative communities" that now shape our personal and political realities. For Komporozos-Athanasiou, "to speculate" means increasingly "to connect," to endorse uncertainty preemptively, and often daringly, as a means of social survival. Finance has thus become the model for society writ large. These financial systems have taken a notable turn in our current era, however. Contemporary capitalism sees the risk-taking, entrepreneurial person being refashioned as a politically disoriented, speculative subject, who embraces the future's radical uncertainty rather than averting it. As Komporozos-Athanasiou shows, virtual marketplaces, new social media, and dating apps function as finance's speculative infrastructures, leading to a new type of imagination across economy and society."

    Abstract: "A new strain of coronavirus emerged sometime in November 2019, and within weeks a cluster of patients began to be admitted to hospitals in Wuhan with severe pneumonia, most of them linked to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. China's seemingly effective containment of the first stage of the epidemic, in glaring contrast with the uncontrolled spread in Europe and the United States, was heralded as a testament to the Chinese Communist Party's unparalleled command over the biomedical sciences, population, and economy. Conversely, much academic and public debate about the origins of the virus focuses on the supposedly "backwards" cultural practice of consuming wild animals and the perceived problem of authoritarianism suppressing information about the outbreak until it was too late. The Origins of COVID-19, by Li Zhang, shifts debate away from narrow cultural, political, or biomedical frameworks, emphasizing that we must understand the origins of emerging diseases with pandemic potential (such as SARS and COVID-19) in the more complex and structural entanglements of state-making, science and technology, and global capitalism. She argues that both narratives, that of China's victory and the racist depictions of its culpability, do not address-and even aggravate-these larger forces that degrade the environment and increase the human-wildlife interface through which novel pathogens spill over into humans and may rapidly expand into global pandemics."

    Abstract: As America has become more racially diverse and economic inequality has increased, American politics has also become more clearly divided by race and less clearly divided by class. In this landmark book, Zoltan L. Hajnal draws on sweeping data to assess the political impact of the two most significant demographic trends of last fifty years. Examining federal and local elections over many decades, as well as policy, Hajnal shows that race more than class or any other demographic factor shapes not only how Americans vote but also who wins and who loses when the votes are counted and policies are enacted. America has become a racial democracy, with non-Whites and especially African Americans regularly on the losing side. A close look at trends over time shows that these divisions are worsening, yet also reveals that electing Democrats to office can make democracy more even and ultimately reduce inequality in well-being

Paramilitaries are generally depicted as irregular armed organizations that carry out acts of violence against civilians on behalf of a state. In doing so, they undermine the state's monopoly of legitimate violence, while at the same time creating a breeding ground for criminal activities. Why do governments with functioning police forces and armies use paramilitary groups? This book tackles this question through the prism of the interpenetration of paramilitaries and the state. The book interprets paramilitarism as the ability of the state to successfully outsource mass political violence against civilians that transforms and traumatizes societies. It analyzes how paramilitarism can be understood in a global context, and how paramilitarism is connected to transformations of warfare and state-society relations. By comparing a broad range of cases, it looks at how paramilitarism has made a profound impact in a large number of countries that were different, but nevertheless shared a history of pro-government militia activity. A thorough understanding of paramilitarism can clarify the direction and intensity of violence in wartime and peacetime.     Abstract: As America has become more racially diverse and economic inequality has increased, American politics has also become more clearly divided by race and less clearly divided by class. In this landmark book, Zoltan L. Hajnal draws on sweeping data to assess the political impact of the two most significant demographic trends of last fifty years. Examining federal and local elections over many decades, as well as policy, Hajnal shows that race more than class or any other demographic factor shapes not only how Americans vote but also who wins and who loses when the votes are counted and policies are enacted. America has become a racial democracy, with non-Whites and especially African Americans regularly on the losing side. A close look at trends over time shows that these divisions are worsening, yet also reveals that electing Democrats to office can make democracy more even and ultimately reduce inequality in well-being

    Abstract: "Originally published in Spanish in 2017, Pluriversal Politics theorizes what is possible and real and how our conceptualizations of these notions at different moments in time determine our political practices at both the individual and collective levels. For Arturo Escobar, realities are plural and always in the making, and this manner of theorizing the world has profound political implications for imagining liberation and a world otherwise. The chapters, which were originally written as essays, point towards diverse ontologies- or modes of being in the world -and ultimately offer tools for thinking about what to do in our current planetary crisis, one driven by predatory global capitalism. Escobar moves us toward a pluriversal worldview, or a world where many worlds fit, and gestures at how we can find evidence of these possibilities in social movements, particularly Afro-Colombian and indigenous movements from Colombia. These indigenous movement leaders in Colombia problematize ontologies in defense of their territories, worlds, and modes of existing thereby destabilizing notions of the real and the possible. Most of the essays were originally written in Spanish between 2014 and 2017, and presented in contexts ranging from academic presentations to activist gatherings. Chapter 1 explores diverse examples of the real and the possible, such as those found in ancestral traditions and in other societies as well as those theorized by academics in attempts to destabilize the real. Chapter 2 proposes ways of thinking from the bottom and with the Earth, inspired by the revolutionary Mexican Zapatistas. In chapter 3 Escobar presents a discourse analysis of a statement by the Nasa people of the Northern Cauca region of Colombia to argue for the adoption of a Mother Earth Liberation concept/movement. Chapters 4 and 5, respectively, explore epistemologies of the South and autonomous social theory productions from Latin America. Chapter 6 considers the idea of "living beyond development" and examines relevant experiences in the resistance to development that provide a glimpse into other worlds while chapter 7 considers a radical sustainability strategy for Colombia given the current planetary crisis. Finally, chapter 8 imagines a different design for the ecologically devasted city of Cali, Colombia, a new design grounded in self-organization and the relationality of life.     Abstract: Die tunesische Gesellschaft stand vor allem während des Arabischen Frühlings im Fokus europäischen Interesses. Doch wie haben sich die Kultur und vor allem die Geschlechterverhältnisse dort überhaupt entwickelt?Diesen Fragen geht der Band mit zwei Blickrichtungen nach: Zum einen wird die Transformation der Geschlechterverhältnisse in der Geschichte Tunesiens seit der Unabhängigkeit, der Diktatur und der Revolution 2011 bis zur Gegenwart analysiert. Zum anderen werden auf theoretisch-begrifflicher Ebene Transformationen des Feminismus und der Geschlechterbegriffe von einem Denken der Differenz und einer Politik der Repräsentation hin zu neueren dekonstruktiven und postkolonialen Gendertheorien erforscht. Betrachtet werden dabei vor allem die Bereiche der Künste, der Populärkultur sowie der Mode als wesentliche Medien der Transformation.

    Abstract: Frauen sind im Alter oft von Armut bedroht, besonders in Städten mit hohen Mieten. Wie kommen sie mit wenig Geld zurecht? Welche Strategien entwickeln sie, um dennoch am sozialen und kulturellen Leben teilzuhaben? Davon erzählen Frauen aus unterschiedlichen sozialen Milieus, und die Analyse dieser Berichte macht deutlich, wie dringend notwendig eine politische und gesellschaftliche Veränderung unserer eingespielten Sozialsysteme ist.
    Abstract: Die 85-jährige Hausmeisterin Maiana D. lebt von 222 Euro Rente, zuzüglich Grundsicherung. 600 Euro Rente hat die ehemalige Lagerarbeiterin Jovana F., die sie mit Zeitungsverkauf aufbessert. Auch Walburga K., Verlagsangestellte, muss zu ihrer Rente von 1170 Euro noch dazu verdienen. Fünzig Frauen zwischen 63 und 85 Jahren aus unterschiedlichen sozialen Milieus wurden für das DFG-Forschungsprojekt unter der Leitung von Prof. Irene Götz interviewt. Aus dieser exemplarischen Bestandsaufnahme wird deutlich, welche Ursachen zur Altersarmut besonders von Frauen führen und wie Frauen damit umgehen, lebenspraktisch und emotional. Auch wenn Frauen ihren Ruhestand wohl verdient haben, reichen die bescheidenen Renten kaum zum Nötigsten. Zum Glück haben sie, als Kriegs- und Nachkriegskinder, noch gelernt, zu sparen und mit dem Mangel zu wirtschaften. Armut im Alter muss auch nicht den Verlust von Lebensqualität bedeuten: Frauen sind erfinderisch, sozial kompetent und oft auch gut vernetzt und, Autonomie steht für sie bis zum Schluss ganz oben. Ein Buch, das die politischen, gesellschaftlichen und persönlichen Verhältnisse in den Blick nimmt, das erzählt und analysiert und in einem Anhang notwendige Informationen bietet, wo Frauen Unterstützung kriegen, die sie so dringend benötigen.

    Abstract: American political history has been built around narratives of crisis, in which what "counts" are the moments when seemingly stable political orders collapse and new ones rise from the ashes. No doubt the history of American politics is filled with such moments-the Great Depression and the New Deal; the rise of modern conservatism in the 1960s and '70s; and, most recently, the 2016 election of Donald Trump. But while crisis-centered frameworks can make sense of certain dimensions of political culture, partisan change, and governance, they also often steal attention from the production of categories like race, gender, and citizenship status that transcend the usual breakpoints in American history. Brent Cebul, Lily Geismer, and Mason B. Williams have brought together first-rate scholars from a wide range of subfields who are making structures of state power-not moments of crisis or partisan realignment-integral to their analyses. All of the contributors see political history as defined less by elite subjects than by tensions between state and economy, state and society, and state and subject-tensions that reveal continuities as much as disjunctures. This broader definition incorporates analyses of the crosscurrents of power, race, and identity; the recent turns toward the history of capitalism and transnational history; and an evolving understanding of American political development that cuts across eras of seeming liberal, conservative, or neoliberal ascendance. The result is a rich revelation of what political history is today

    Abstract: In The Price and Promise of Specialness, Jin Li Lim revises narratives on the overseas Chinese and the People's Republic of China by analysing the Communist approach to 'overseas Chinese affairs' in New China's first decade as a function of a larger political economy. Jin Li Lim shows how the party-state centred its approach towards the overseas Chinese on a perception of their financial utility and thus sought to offer them a special identity and place in New China, so as to unlock their riches. Yet, this contradicted the quest for socialist transformation, and as its early pragmatism fell away, the radicalising party-state abandoned its promises to the overseas Chinese, who were left to pay the price for their difference.

    Abstract: "The postcolonial state in Burundi emerged through talk of truth and acts of violence. Beginning with the first democratic contest in late 1959, this book examines decolonisation as a search for certainty over the nature of postcolonial community and authority, seen from the vantage point of two communes on the border with Rwanda. While ethnicity was largely absent from early political struggles, by 1972 the postcolony was realised in a genocidal repression. Yet from democracy to genocide people and state spoke about politics in the language of truth: declarations of official truths, discussions of rumour, and riddles of political persuasion. Through these idioms of truth-speaking, the book examines differing conceptions over the nature of authority and its relationship to its subjects, the possibilities and closures of postcolonial citizenship, the deep hostility and suspicion of successive regimes towards a borderland population, and their performances of loyalty, petition and vigilance in response. It shows how politics was made between peasants and state elites, the nature of violence in the processes of decolonisation, and how the language of truth continues to matter today"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Wie steht es um die politische Gleichheit in Gesellschaften, in denen Einkommen immer weiter auseinanderdriften und die Armen sich kaum noch politisch beteiligen? Wessen Stimme findet Gehör? Mit einer umfassenden empirischen Untersuchung politischer Repräsentation in Deutschland zeigt die Autorin, dass die Entscheidungen des Deutschen Bundestages seit den 1980er-Jahren systematisch zugunsten oberer Berufs- und Einkommensgruppen verzerrt sind. In der Folge wird nicht nur das Gleichheitsversprechen der Demokratie verletzt, sondern es werden auch vermehrt Entscheidungen getroffen, die ökonomische Ungleichheit tendenziell verschärfen.
