    Abstract: Het woord 'erfgoed' wordt tegenwoordig vooral toegepast in het begrippenpaar 'cultureel erfgoed'. Een ander gebruik van het woord 'erfgoed' richt zich juist op de immateriële betekenis van het woord. Dan gaat het onder meer om de geestelijke erfenis van een denker of kunstenaar. In die laatste betekenis heeft het begrip 'erfgoed' een langere geschiedenis dan in de eerste. In Erfgoed. De geschiedenis van een begrip worden de verschillende geschiedenissen van het begrip gereconstrueerd en geanalyseerd. Allereerst wordt aandacht besteed aan de juridische herkomst en ontwikkeling van het woord 'erfgoed'. Willem Frijhoff belicht de religieuze dimensie ervan. Andere auteurs richten zich op verwante begrippen, zoals 'monument' of 'oudheden'. Eco Haitsma Mulier besteedt aandacht aan het begrip 'erflaters', bekend geworden door de beroemde publicatie Erflaters van onze beschaving van Jan en Annie Romein (1938). Eric Ketelaar, Gerard Rooijakkers en anderen bespreken elk een bepaald werkingsveld binnen het cultureel erfgoed: archieven, literatuur, archeologie, volkskunde. De bundel wordt afgesloten met een beschouwing van Wessel Krul over de behoefte van sommigen zich af te zetten tegen de erfgoedgedachte of zelfs de drang om erfgoed te vernietigen

    Abstract: In dieser Publikation werden Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Zwangssterilisation von als ‚erbkrank' kategorisierten Frauen und Männern in Wien zwischen 1940 und 1945 detailliert beschrieben. Das den Zwangssterilisationen zugrunde liegende ‚Gesetz zur Verhütung erbkranken Nachwuchses' (GzVeN) trat in der ‚Ostmark' im Jänner 1940 in Kraft, sechs Jahre später als in NS-Deutschland, wo bereits 300.000 Menschen, etwa gleich viele Frauen wie Männer zwangssterilisiert worden waren. Während es dort nach Kriegsbeginn kaum noch zu Verfahren kam, wurden in der ‚Ostmark' mindestens 6.000 Frauen und Männer bis Kriegsende zwangssterilisiert. Für Wien, der nach dem ‚Anschluss' zweitgrößten Stadt des Deutschen Reiches, sind 1.203 Gerichtsbeschlüsse zur Zwangssterilisation rekonstruierbar. Die quantitative und qualitative Auswertung der erst seit kurzem für die Forschung zugänglichen Verfahrensakten des Erbgesundheitsgerichts und des Erbgesundheitsobergerichts Wien zeigt, dass drei Rahmenbedingungen den Vollzug des GzVeN prägten: erstens die im Herbst 1939 vorgenommenen Einschränkungen des GzVeN, wonach Ärzte nur noch bei ‚besonders großer Fortpflanzungsgefahr' der als ‚erbkrank' kategorisierten Frauen und Männer ein Verfahren beim Erbgesundheitsgericht einbringen sollten, zweitens der Krieg mit allen dadurch bedingten personellen und organisatorischen Einschränkungen und drittens die NS-Euthanasie: Anders als in NS-Deutschland waren Zwangssterilisationen nicht die Vorstufe dazu - die Entscheidung über Zwangssterilisation oder Tötung verlief von Anfang an parallel und einige Ärzte in Wien waren für beides verantwortlich.Die Auswertung verdeutlicht weiters, dass Richter und ärztliche Beisitzer der Wiener Erbgesundheitsgerichtsbarkeit willige Vollstrecker waren beim radikalen Versuch der Verwirklichung der Vision eines ‚gesunden Volkskörpers', indem sie das GzVeN unbeirrt von sonstigen Rahmenbedingungen vollzogen: ein nationalsozialistisches Unrechtsgesetz, das einen körperlichen Eingriff mit schwerwiegenden und lebenslangen Folgen gegen den Willen der Betroffenen vorsah. Nach Kriegsende mussten sich Richter und Ärzte nicht für ihre Mitverantwortung an den Zwangssterilisationen verantworten.     Abstract: This publication describes in detail the preparation and realization of the forcibly sterilization of numerous women and men Vienna from 1940 to 1945. These forced sterilizations of individuals, being categorized as 'hereditary ill', were based on the 'Law for the Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring' (GzVeN). In Nazi Germany it took effect in January 1934, and until the outbreak of the war, when most of the court-proceedings had already ended, 300.000 women and men, had been forcibly sterilized. In January 1940 the law was implemented in the 'Ostmark', and at least 6.000 women and men had been forcibly sterilized during the war. In Vienna, the then second-largest city of the 'German Reich' 1.203 court-decisions in favour of a forcibly sterilization could be traced-back. These court-files of the 'Viennese Hereditary Health Court' (Erbgesundheitsgericht) became accessible for research only recently. The quantitative and qualitative analysis indicates three parameters for the implementation of the GzVeN in Vienna: First of all, the reduction of lawsuits to 'urgent' cases, i.e. persons of a 'particularly great danger of procreation'; secondly, the personal and structural restrictions resulting from war; and thirdly, the Nazi Euthanasia: Different from Nazi Germany the forced sterilizations had not been preceding the murder of disabled persons, but were rather implemented in the same period of time. Several doctors in Vienna were responsible for both, forced sterilizations and murder.Both judges and doctors of the 'Viennese Hereditary Health Court' were keen to contribute to the radical efforts to create the visional 'healthy national body' by fulfilling the GzVeN independent of the above mentioned parameters: they implemented a National Socialist tort-law, which included a surgical intervention with severe and lifelong psychical and physical consequences - against the will of the people who were affected. After the end of the war, the judges and doctors did not have to take any kind of responsibility for their decisions to sterilize people forcibly. This was not surprising, taking into account that the categorization of persons due to their 'value of hereditage' ('Erbwert') continued: Firstly, the then-chancellor Renner announced to pass a similar law when the GzVeN was repealed in Mai 1945; secondly, the forcibly sterilized women and men were partly acknowledged only in 1995 as victims of Nazi-persecution and fully acknowledged only 2005; and thirdly ...

    Abstract: This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people. The legal and institutional framework deals with issues of legitimacy and institutional structure. The economics of charity analyses the relations between the confraternities and the hospital structures, the procedures for the administration of the assets, and the strategies of governance underlying the policies of aid of which the confraternities were the principal instrument.     Abstract: This book focuses on one of the prime movers in the unification of Lunigiana – a region which at the time was still broken up into a myriad of tiny feudal holdings, almost all in the hands of the various branches of the Malaspina family. The process of unification began in the fifteenth century, when various areas of the region were conquered by Milan and Florence, which also divided between them the hegemony of the remaining independent territories, while Genoa too displayed an interest in expansion in the region. As a result it became crucial for the local lords to manoeuvre between the various forces at play to maintain the independence of their own little states. Among the figures who displayed the greatest dexterity in this was Gabriele Malaspina, who became a leading player on the stage of local history. The book starts by illustrating the period in which Malaspina succeeded in obtaining his political independence, and then goes on to analyse the phase in which his policy came to be characterised by an absolute loyalty to Florence. Finally the book addresses the last part of the Marquis's life, marked by a progressive distancing from the Florentine alliance in favour of other entities, in which he nevertheless always succeeded in maintaining his independence

    Abstract: Der vierte Band der "Hamburger Historischen Forschungen" umfasst in erster Linie die Edition eines unveroeffentlichten Textes. Autor ist der Theologe Prof. Dr. Dr. Paul Schuetz (1891–1985), der von 1940 bis 1952 Hauptpastor an der Hamburger Hauptkirche St. Nikolai war und zugleich als hauptamtlicher Dozent und spaeter als Professor der Theologie an der Kirchlichen Hochschule Hamburg lehrte. Er gehoert zu den ersten, die ein Konzept der politischen Religion entwickelten. Sein 1935 verfasster Beitrag konnte damals nicht publiziert werden.Heute ist eine Edition dieses Beitrages zum einen wichtig für die Theologie- und Kirchengeschichte. Zum anderen gibt es seit einigen Jahren in der historischen Forschung eine intensive Diskussion über die in den Dreissigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelte Interpretation des „Dritten Reiches“ als „politische Religion“. Dieses Modell, das Diktaturen, insbesondere den Nationalsozialismus, als „politische Religion“ versteht, wird im Allgemeinen Eric Voegelin und Raymond Aron zugeschrieben, die ihre Ansaetze 1938 bzw. 1939 publizierten.Dass Paul Schuetz schon drei bzw. vier Jahre zuvor eine solche Konzeption entwickelt hatte, war bis vor Kurzem nicht bekannt.     Abstract: The fourth volume of the "Hamburg Historical research" includes mainly the edition of an so far unpublished text. The author is the theologian Prof. Dr. Dr. Paul Schuetz (1891-1985), who was chief minister from 1940 to 1952 at the Hamburg Main St. Nikolai church and as a full-time lecturer and professor of theology at the University Church of Hamburg. He is among the first who developed a concept of political religion. His 1935 contribution couldn't be published at this time.Today an edition of this contribution is important for theology and church history. Also there is the discussion in historical research of interpreting the "Third Reich" as a "political religion". This model understands dictatorships, especially the National Socialism, as a "political religion", is generally attributed to Eric Voegelin and Raymond Aron, who published their approaches in 1938 and 1939. The fact that Paul Schuetz had three or four years previously developed such a conception, was until recently unknown. The present edition can therefore give new impetus to the debate about the history and viability of this approach and enrich their content

    Abstract: Die Untersuchung "Die Freimaurer im Alten Preußen 1738 - 1806" ging aus einem von Prof. Dr. Helmut Reinalter geleiteten und vom Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF) in Wien geförderten und finanzierten Forschungsprojekt der Forschungsstelle Demokratische Bewegungen an der Geistesgeschichtlichen Fakultät der Universität Innsbruck in Zusammenarbeit mit der Wissenschaftlichen Kommission zur Erforschung der Freimaurerei hervor. Ausgewertet wurden hauptsächlich die im Geheimen Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin-Dahlem aufbewahrten Freimaurerbestände der Altpreußischen Logen, ferner die Freimaurerbestände des Österreichischen Staatsarchivs, Haus-,Hof- und Staatsarchiv Wien, sowie weiterer Archive und Bibliotheken, außerdem die masonische und die relevante regionalgeschichtliche, sozialgeschichtliche und biographische Literatur.Das Handbuch erfasst den Zeitraum 1741 - 1806 im östlichen Brandenburg-Preußen in den Grenzen vor der Zweiten Polnischen Teilung 1793, somit Vor- und Hinterpommern (ohne Schwedisch-Pommern), das Königreich Preußen (Ostpreußen), das 1740/41 eroberte Schlesien sowie das 1772 durch die Erste Polnische Teilung einverleibte Preußen königlich-polnischen Anteils (Westpreußen); Pommern und Schlesien lagen im Heiligen Römischen Reich Deutscher Nation, Ost- und Westpreußen, außerhalb.Die Freimaurerlogen werden nach gleichen Kiterien behandelt: ihre Geschichte im historischen und regionalen Zusammenhang, die Mitglieder un die Sozialstruktur, die gesellschaftliche, soziale und kulturelle Tätigkeit sowie die Wirkung in die bürgerliche Gesellschaft. Die maurerisch und biographisch kommentierten Mitgliederlisten verzeichnen erstmals die Gesamtheit der Freimaurer im Untersuchungsgebiet. Damit wird auch ein Beitrag zur Prosopographie und zur Familiengeschichte geleistet. Die Freimaurerlogen waren eine eigene Form der Sozietäten des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts mit ähnlicher Organisation, jedoch auf breiter sozialer Basis, mit in Stufen (Graden) aufwärts steigenden, ethisch-moralischem Programm der Menschenbildung und der Einweihung in ein sogenanntes freimaurerisches Geheimnis.     Abstract: The research “The Freemasons in Ancient Prussia 1738 – 1806” is the result of a research project of the Research Centre for Democratic Movements at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Innsbruck in cooperation with the Scientific Commission for the Research of Freemansory, headed by Prof. Dr. Helmut and financed by the Fund for the promotion of scientific research (FWF) in Vienna.The main sources for this research were in the Masonic papers and documents of the ancient Prussian lodges, preserved at the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin-Dahlem, the sources of the Austrian State Archive, Department Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv, Vienna, a series of other archives and libraries, the Masonic literature as well as the relevant literature on regional, social and biographical history.The reference book includes the period 1741 – 1806 in eastern Brandenburg-Prussia within the boundaries before the Second division of Poland in 1793, i.e. Pomeriana (excluding Swedish Pomerania), the Kingdom of Prussia (East Prussia), Silesia conquered by Prussia in 1740/41, and West Prussia, which was annected to Prussia after the First division of Poland in 1772. Pomerania and Silesia were parts of of the Holy Roman Empire, whereas East and West Prussia were situated beyond its boundaries.The Masonic lodges have been analyzed according to analoque criteria: their development in historical and regional context, their membership and social structure, societal, social and cultural activities as well as their influential role in civic society. For the first time, Masonic and biographically commented lists cover the entire membership of the analyzed region. Thus the book is also a contribution to a prosopographical and family history. The Masonic lodges were a specific form of a associations of the 17th and 18th centuries with a similar organizational structure, but on a broader social basis. They followed a system of successive steps (grades) with an ethical and moral programme of forming the human character with the aim of the introduction into a so-called Masonic secret. Since 1740 the apolitical lodges, bringing together different confessions, were associations legitimated by the Prussian state, which could freely develop without intervention by the police.     Abstract: "The Frame of Legal Customs" ("Der Rahmen der Rechtsgewohnheiten") attempts to interchange results from two scientific disciplines, legal theory and legal history for the middle ages.The first part describes the present and in the sphere of legal theory not unypical view of law as a system of norms as introduced by theorists like Hans Kelsen ore H.L.A. Hart. Main target of criticism is the concept of law as provided by legal positivism, pointing out the problems of the logic of norms and the speech-act-theoretical background of this concept.The second part shows the inadequacy of the modern concept of law – which faces law as system of norms – for the situation of the early middle ages, when law was practiced in judicial assemblies in a strict oral manner without the common use of written texts. Results of German legal history which assume a more differentiated structure of legal thinking (based on incompatible categories of law: "recht", "Gebot", "Willkür") instead of one comprehensive notion of law, are discussed.The third part is dedicated to the close examination of the concept of law of three of the most important legal historians in Germany (Karl Kroeschell, Gerhard Dilcher, Jürgen Weitzel).The fourth and last part offers an alternative approach to the problem, how legal thinking and legal practice can be understood in premodern societies. It starts at the fundamental criticism of legal positivism, which can be found in the work of Ronald Dworkin ("law as integrity") and earlier at Carl Schmitts concept of concrete order ("Konkretes Ordnungsdenken"). The correlation between the role of legal rules, decisions and orders is discussed within the proposed theoretical frame. Finally the notion of order-configurations ("Ordnungskonfigurationen"), which has been brought into discussion by Stefan Weinfurter, is compared to the concept of law as a form of concrete order as developed in the text. A text of Adalbero of Laon and the letters of pope Gregory VII are interpreted as an illustrating example (and implicit criticism on Weinfurter's specific use of sociological functionalism) using the proposed alternative categories
    Abstract: Der "Rahmen der Rechtsgewohnheiten" ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit der gegenwärtigen Entwicklung des Rechtsbegriffs der Rechtsgeschichte des Mittelalters. Konkret wird dabei versucht, rechtstheoretische Einsichten für diesen Begriff fruchtbar zu machen und zu einem, von rechtshistorischer Seite geforderten Brückenschlag zwischen den Diziplinen beizutragen.Der I. Abschnitt (aus rechtstheoretischer Perspektive für den Rechtshistoriker verfaßt) soll insoferne zeigen, mit welchen Konsequenzen zu rechnen ist, wenn Recht als Normensystem konzipiert wird. Gegenstad ist also der Rechtsbgriff des Positivismus, wie er typisch von Hans Kelsen oder H.L.A. Hart konzipiert wurde. Der Abschnitt vereint eine historische Herleitung mit einer systematischen Kritik der normenlogischen wie sprechakttheoretischen Grundlagen.Im II. Abschnitt (umgekehrt aus rechtgeschichtlicher Perspektive für den Rechtstheoretiker formuliert) wird gezeigt, was passiert, wenn ein derartig konzipierter positivistischer Rechtsbegriff auf (früh)mittelalterliche Verhältnisse angewandt wird. Damit soll einerseits die Unzulänglichkeit des Normsystembegriffs für das Mittelalter plausibel gemacht und andererseits eine Strukturaufklärung des mittelalterlichen Rechts vorangetrieben werden, mit dem Ergebnis, daß auch aus rechttheoretischer Sicht an die Stelle eines einheitlichen, alle Phänomene umgreifenden Rechtsbegriffs eine begriffliche Vielfalt an Rechtsbegriffen treten muß, wie sie z.B. in der Lehre Ebels mit ihrer Differenzierung in "recht", "Gebot" und "Willkür" vorgeschlagen wurde.Der III. Abschnitt ist der eingehenden Analyse der Rechtsbegriffe von drei der bedeutendsten deutschsprachigen Rechtshistoriker gewidmet (Kroeschell, Dilcher, Weitzel); Leitfaden ist der Begriff der "Rechtsgewohnheiten". Der Begriff wird einerseits als wichtiger Ansatz zur Überwindung des Normystem-Paradigmas gewürdigt, zugleich aber dahingehend kritisiert, daß seine Formulierung und theoretische Konkretisierung immer noch in wesentlichen Momenten dem unangemessenen Normsystemdenken verhaftet bleibt.Im IV. und letzten Abschnitt wird anknüpfend an die rechtsphilosophische Fundamentalkritik am Rechtspositivismus von Ronald Dworkin (prozedurale Rechtstheorie) und von Carl Schmitt (Konkretes Ordnungsdenken) der Versuch unternommen, einen alternativen den oralen bzw. semioralen Verhältnissen des Mittelalters angemesseneren Rechtsbegriff zu entwicklen oder zumindest eine Rahmentheorie zu bieten, innerhalb w ...

    Abstract: There have been calls to increase the autonomy of higher education institutions in Europe for a number of years. They have been counterbalanced by demands for increasing accountability and a European quality assurance system. In London in 2007, the European ministers of education decided to implement a European register of accredited quality agencies, and defined standards for registration. Being part of the register requires “substantial compliance with all standards” instead of “full-compliance”. This might take into consideration the context of the national higher education system, the role of the agency in the quality assurance system, and even the national culture and traditions, allowing for different interpretations, some imprecision, and diverse degrees of flexibility and compliance. Indications from the United States suggest an emerging desire at the federal level to play a more visible role in regulating higher education through intervention in the accreditation system to ensure increased institutional accountability. This may have a parallel in the European situation. While in the United States the attempts at increased federal control have so far apparently failed, in Europe quality systems linked to higher education institutions were replaced with “independent” accrediting agencies. We analyse these changes and offer a possible interpretation for the differences on the two sides of the Atlantic. Accréditation supranationale, confiance et autonomie des établissements : Contrastes du développement de l’accréditation entre l’Europe et les États-Unis À l’échelon européen, certains soulignent depuis plusieurs années la nécessité de conférer une autonomie accrue aux établissements d’enseignement supérieur, alors même que d’autres exigent que ces derniers rendent davantage de comptes concernant leurs activités et leurs performances. À Londres en 2007, les ministres européens de l’éducation ont décidé la mise en place d’un registre européen où figureront les agences accréditées et où seront définies les normes auxquelles ces agences devront se plier pour être autorisées à y figurer. Les conditions à respecter pour pouvoir être inscrit au registre européen sont ainsi passées d’une « conformité totale à l’ensemble des normes » à une « large conformité ». L’interprétation de ces normes pourrait s’effectuer en tenant compte des spécificités propres à chaque système d’enseignement supérieur national, au rôle de chaque agence au sein du système d’assurance qualité, voire de la culture et des traditions nationales, laissant la voie ouverte à des divergences d’interprétation, à une certaine marge d’imprécision et à divers degrés de flexibilité et de conformité. Des indications provenant des États-Unis suggèrent l’émergence d’un souhait, au niveau fédéral, de jouer un rôle plus visible dans la régulation de l’enseignement supérieur, via l’intervention du système d’accréditation pour assurer un développement de la responsabilité institutionnelle. Cette tendance incite naturellement à établir un parallèle avec la situation observée en Europe. Tandis qu’aux États-Unis, les tentatives visant à renforcer le contrôle par les autorités fédérales semblent avoir échoué, en Europe, les systèmes de qualité liés aux établissements d’enseignement supérieur ont été remplacés par des agences d’accréditation « indépendantes ». Dans ce rapport, les auteurs proposent une analyse de ces changements et suggèrent une interprétation possible des différences existant des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.

Holger Herma untersucht den Wandel der Liebessemantik in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und stellt die generationsspezifische Suche nach einem "authentischen" Selbst in der Intimität dar. Angesiedelt im Bereich einer empirischen Wissenssoziologie rekonstruiert die Studie, wie sich das individuelle Ich in seiner Selbstthematisierung in der romantischen Liebe immer zugleich als historisches Ich entäußert. Der Autor kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass das moderne Versprechen der Liebe nach höchstpersönlicher Aufmerksamkeit einer ständigen Prüfung unterzogen wird. Die Änderungen in der Liebesauffassung entspringen einer Dynamik von geteilter Zeiterfahrung, gemeinsamer Problemdeutung und herrschender Genderzuschreibung. Das Buch wendet sich an Dozierende und Studierende der Sozialwissenschaften mit Schwerpunkt Paar-und Genderforschung, moderne Wissenskulturen, Lebensverlaufs- und Biografieforschung und bietet zugleich wertvolle Anregungen für die qualitative Beratungspraxis.

    Abstract: Im Zuge der Diskussion um den demographischen Wandel hat das Thema Familiengründung und -erweiterung erheblich an Relevanz gewonnen. Gegenstand dieser Studie ist die Ausarbeitung sowie Anwendung eines Modells, das die Betrachtung des Übergangs in die (Erst-)Elternschaft als Resultat eines innerpartnerschaftlichen Entscheidungsprozesses zwischen Frau und Mann ermöglicht. Die Ergebnisse des Entscheidungsmodells verdeutlichen die Bedeutsamkeit der Kinderwünsche, das Vorliegen einer Paarinterdependenz bzw. wechselseitigen Beeinflussung sowie die Relevanz der biographischen Kontexte beider Partner für das generative Verhalten. Auch zeigt die Autorin, wie die Identifikationsproblematik bei der Abbildung von Entscheidungsprozessen einschließlich von Modellerweiterungen (Multi-Decision- und Multi-Wave-Design) gelöst werden kann.

    Abstract: The fourth volume of the series "Hamburger Historische Forschungen" comprises primarily the edition of an unpublished text. The author is the theologian Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Paul Schütz (1891-1985) who was the main pastor at the Hamburg Main Church St. Nikolai from 1940 to 1952. At the same time he taught as a full-time lecturer and later as professor of theology at the Church University of Hamburg. Schütz was one of the first to develop a concept of political religion. His contribution, written in 1935, could not be published at that time.Today, an edition of this article is important for the history of theology and church history. On the other hand, for some years now there has been an intensive discussion in historical research on the interpretation of the "Third Reich" as a "political religion" developed in the 1930s. This model, which sees dictatorships, especially National Socialism, as a "political religion", is generally attributed to Eric Voegelin and Raymond Aron, who published their approaches in 1938 and 1939 respectively. It was not known until recently that Paul Schütz had already developed such a concept three or four years earlier. The present edition can therefore provide new impetus for the debate on the history and viability of this approach and enrich its content

He studied Dutch and Oriental language and literature at the University of Groningen (1891 - 1895) and comparative linguistic at the University of Leipzig (1895-1896). In 1915, he was appointed professor of general history at the Leiden University. His most famous works include The Autumn of the Middle Ages (1919), which dealt with life, ideas, art, and behaviors of the upper classes of Burgundy in the 14th and 15th centuries, Erasmus (1924), a biography of the famous Dutch Renaissance scholar, and Homo Ludens (1938), focusing on the element of play in human culture

Deze essays en studies zijn geselecteerd op basis van de diverse disciplines waarmee Huizinga zich bezighield - van de Middeleeuwen tot de Renaissance en van de moderne tot de algemene culturele geschiedenis. Deze selectie wordt geïntroduceerd en toegelicht door Huizinga-biograaf Willem Otterspeer. Johan Huizinga werd in 1872 in Groningen geboren. Dat zijn de belangrijkste aanbevelingen uit het rapport van de commissie Nationaal Plan Toekomst Geesteswetenschappen onder voorzitterschap van Job Cohen. Hij heeft het eindrapport vanmorgen overhandigd aan minister Ronald Plasterk, die een jaar geleden de opdracht gaf voor het opstellen van dit advies. Op het eerste gezicht lijken de geesteswetenschappen er in Nederland goed voor te staan. Het aantal studenten groeit, het onderzoek is hoogwaardig en er is sprake van een groeiende maatschappelijke belangstelling voor de producten van het geesteswetenschappelijk onderzoek. Deze ogenschijnlijke bloei kan niet verhullen dat zich ernstige problemen voordoen die de toekomst van de geesteswetenschappen bedreigen. Zo kon afgelopen jaren ondanks de stijging van het aantal studenten niet of nauwelijks in extra personeel worden geïnvesteerd. Een sterke verslechtering van de stafstudentratio en toenemende druk op onderzoekstijd zijn het gevolg. Ook voor het opleiden van de toekomstige generatie wetenschappers ontbreekt het aan financiële ruimte. Gevolg is dat de pool van kandidaten om de huidige generatie wetenschappelijke staf op te volgen steeds kleiner wordt, wat op termijn de kwaliteit van het hele wetenschapsgebied bedreigt. De commissie stelt voor om een deskundig en gezaghebbend regieorgaan in te stel-len. Dat beheert een speciaal budget waarop de geesteswetenschappelijke faculteiten een beroep kunnen doen met een overtuigend toekomstplan. Dat plan moet de verschillende deelproblemen (zoals versnippering van het onderwijsaanbod, geringe maatschappelijke uitstraling, lage onderwijsrendementen, betere doorstroming van jong talent in vaste wetenschappelijke rangen etc.) stevig aanpakken.     Abstract: The ship's surgeons in the employ of the Dutch East India Company were responsible for the healthcare on board the ships and in the hospitals founded by the Company in a vast geographical area expanding from South Africa to Japan. They were not highly regarded by their contemporaries, who criticised them for being little more than barbers or loblolly boys. The author of this fascinating study paints the true picture of the profession, drawing on her analysis of data for some 3,000 ship's surgeons in the Company's service, and including the recruitment policy of the Company, the career of the surgeons, their geographical origins, their life expectancy, to mention but a few. The results of her analysis, based on many hitherto unpublished sources, show this negative image to be a myth. The surgeons were, as a rule, fairly well educated according to the standards of their time. The tragic fact that they were confronted with diseases unknown in Europe and incurable at the time contributed to the sailors' and the society's dismissive attitude to their skills
    Abstract: Scheepschirurgijns van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie waren verantwoordelijk voor de gezondheidszorg op de schepen en vestigingen van de VOC in Zuid-Afrika en Azië. Zij staan te boek als analfabeten en kwakzalvers of zelfs veredelde barbiers. Iris Bruijn bewijst met haar diepgaande onderzoek dat het negatieve beeld een mythe is en laat tegelijkertijd de tragiek van deze chirurgijns zien. Ze laat 3000 chirurgijns de revue passeren en belicht hun opleiding, hun geografische herkomst, de carrière van de chirurgijns, hun levensverwachting en het rekruteringsbeleid van de VOC. Hoewel de scheepschirurgijns goed opgeleid en bekwaam waren, kregen zij te maken met onbekende exotische ziekten die, zo weten wij nu, niet te genezen waren

De Opstand verkeert in een diepe crisis, de tegenstander is overmachtig en de opstandelingen zijn onderling verdeeld. Met pragmatische en politiekprincipiële argumenten verdedigt Coornhert in zijn brieven en traktaten de vrijheid van religie. En altijd klinkt daarin zijn diepste overtuiging door: geloof en dwang gaan niet samen. Dit is Coornhert op zijn scherpst: ontgoocheling en fel verzet. Dirk Volkertzoon Coornhert (1522-1590) was een vooraanstaand medestander van Willem van Oranje.     Abstract: Today, health insurance is a key component in the system of social security in most European Union countries. In many of these countries, modern health-insurance funds and healthcare insurers play an essential role in implementing the public health-insurance system. Many of these health-insurance funds have a long and fascinating history, of which clear traces can be seen today in the organisation and structure of health insurance, as well as health-insurance funds and insurers. In Two centuries of solidarity, the authors compare the systems of health insurance, health-insurance funds and healthcare insurers in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Given the similar political, economic and social development that these countries have undergone in the past 60 years and the availability of a qualitatively high level of health care, one might expect a high degree of similarity between these countries' healthcare insurance systems. However, the dissimilarities are surprising. In fact, these differences are currently becoming ever more apparent between systems in general, and the structure and operation of the health insurance funds and health care insurers in particular. The differences include the compulsory nature of insurance, the extent of coverage, premiums, entrepreneurship, competition, and the degree of private insurance. Many of these national singularities can be understood and explained only by considering the historical background of the health insurance systems, the insurers, and their evolution over the past two centuries. This study adopts an institutional and political perspective towards a further understanding of the development of health insurance, and of how this ultimately determined the specific nature of the healthcare insurers and funds and the way they currently operate in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands

    Abstract: Die Universitäten, Hoch- und Fachschulen stellten einen wichtigen Bestandteil im gesellschaftlichen System des Sozialismus dar. Bei der Betrachtung des Aufbauprozesses des Wissenschaftssektors zeigt sich, welche Bedeutung die SED der "politischen Eroberung der Universitäten und Hochschulen" zuschrieb.Den Hochschulen der DDR fielen zwei wichtige Aufgaben zu: zum einen galt es den Studenten eine fundierte und qualitativ hohe Ausbildung zu ermöglichen. Zum anderen sollten sie die Studenten politisch-ideologisch erziehen, wobei die Erziehung an erster Stelle, und die Ausbildung erst an zweiter Stelle stand. Den Erziehungsauftrag bekam neben den Hochschullehrern vor allem die FDJ zugewiesen, da es ihr, durch die Arbeit in den Seminar-FDJ-Gruppen möglich schien, auf jeden Einzelnen einzuwirken.Die Arbeit untersucht zunächst, mit welchen Verordnungen (z.Bsp.: Zweite und Dritte Hochschulreform) die DDR Regierung versucht hat, die Autonomie der Hochschule abzuschaffen und die Bildungseinrichtung zu politisieren, wie sich diese Veränderungen an der Technischen Hochschule/Universität Karl-Marx-Stadt ausgewirkt haben und wie die FDJ ihre Erziehungsrolle an dieser Hochschule/Universität wahrgenommen und umgesetzt hat.Resümierend muss gesagt werden, dass obwohl im "Studium [...] fast nichts ohne die FDJ, aber alles mit ihr" ging, die Jugendorganisation ihrem Anspruch nicht gerecht werden konnte. Selbst wer von der Weltanschauung überzeugt war, empfand die Arbeits- und Wirkungsweise oftmals als hölzern und autoritär, nicht auf seine Bedürfnisse ausgerichtet. Die FDJ hatte es nur ungenügend verstanden, Bindeglied zwischen Partei und Jugend zu sein.Die Studenten selbst waren weniger an Politisierung, als am Studium selbst und seinem außeruniversitären Leben interessiert, so dass sie der permanenten Ideologisierung eher überdrüssig waren
    Abstract: The universities, colleges and technical schools showed an important part in the social system of the socialism. By considering the creation of the science sector, the meaning, which was ascribed by the SED in the "political conquest of the universities and colleges" became important.Two important duties of the universities of the GDR were: on the one hand, it was a matter to allow students to achieve a sound and qualitatively high education. On the other hand, they should educate the students political-ideologically and the political education stood at the first and the education at the second position.Firstly the work examines, with which provisions (f.e.: The second and third university reform) the GDR government tried to abolish the autonomy of the college and to politicise the educational institution. A second topic is to analyse how these changes have affected the Technical college/university Karl-Marx-Stadt and how the FDJ perceived its education role in the college/ university. Summing up it must be said, that although in the "study [...] almost nothing went without FDJ, but everything with it", the FDJ could not meet its requirements. Even who was persuaded of that world view felt that the approaches and impact often were wooden and authoritarian and not straightened to his needs. The FDJ only understood insufficiently to be a connection between party and youth.The students themselves were less interested in politicisation than in the study and its external-university life, so that they were rather weary of the permanenet ideology

The editors connect the preoccupations of Pacific archaeologists with those of their colleagues working in other island regions and on “big questions” of colonisation, migration, interaction and patterns and processes of cultural change in hitherto-uninhabited environments. These sorts of outward-looking, big-picture contextual studies are invaluable, but all too often are missing from locally- and regionally-oriented writing, very much to its detriment. In sum, the work strongly advances our understanding of the early prehistory of Fiji through its well-integrated combination of original research and the reinterpretation of existing knowledge in the context of wider theoretical and historical concerns. In doing so The Early Prehistory of Fiji makes a truly substantial contribution to Pacific and archaeological scholarship

    Abstract: L’histoire de la chinoiserie est celle d’une ambition économique qui chercha à donner une nouvelle extension, maritime, aux anciennes routes de la soie afin de capter au profit des nombreuses Compagnies des Indes orientales, créées à cet effet, une partie des parts de marché qu’impliquait ce commerce avec l’Extrême-Orient. Ainsi envahirent l’Europe une foule de « produits de la Chine » – porcelaines, textiles, laques, objets de luxe – dont la possession a le plus souvent été un marqueur de distinction sociale. Le développement de la chinoiserie et du goût chinois au XVIIIe siècle est un phénomène européen, qui s’inscrit dans la dynamique même instaurée par la Pensée des Lumières, où l’on détecte un courant utopique fondé à la fois sur l’idée de la reconstitution d’un Éden perdu, et sur celle d’une communauté politique et sociale restaurée. Sur le plan stylistique, l’influence de la Chine s’est trouvée en phase avec les grandes tendances du goût régnant entre 1720-1770, dominé par la confusion des figures et de l’ornement ; les effets de surface dus à la découverte de matières nouvelles comme la porcelaine et la laque ; et l’imbrication des formes. Il est clair que l’appropriation du goût chinois en Europe s’est exprimée à travers une démarche dont il convient d’apprécier le caractère subversif, puisque l’art rocaille apparaît incontestablement comme une tentative de mettre entre parenthèses certains des principes de la représentation classique. Le déni du système perspectif, le refus d’utilisation du système proportionnel des ordres, l’expérimentation systématique de l’asymétrie, de fréquentes propositions pour des compositions non centrées, comme la légitimité reconnue à des variations non proportionnelles d’échelle sont autant d’éléments qui participent à la proposition d’un système de composition alternatif au système classique. Devant l’impossibilité évidente de proposer ici un aperçu complet de cette histoire d’influences, d’appropriations et de réinterprétations, les éditeurs ont choisi de privilégier certains pans de cette histoire, moins récemment investigués ou laissés parfois en friche. Ils ont pris l’option de centrer ce volume sur deux axes particuliers : privilégier, d’une part, l’étude des vecteurs de transmission de cette séduction ainsi que l’appréciation de la manière dont ces agents ont contribué à « colorer » les éléments transmis ; et attirer, d’autre part, l’attention sur l’intérêt et la qualité, souvent mésestimés, des « chinoiseries » réalisées dans nos régions au XVIIIe siècle.Des questionnements fondamentaux sont ici esquissés : sur le degré d’extension du concept (par rapport, notamment, à l’expression littéraire) ; sur le degré d’adéquation de ses formes et de ses expressions par rapport à la réalité chinoise ; sur la place occupée par la chinoiserie dans le discours et la culture globale des Lumières, sur les agents de la diffusion – en particulier les missionnaires – et les modalités de celle-ci. Dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux (1715-1792), la chinoiserie et le goût chinois ont beaucoup contribué à créer, dans les habitudes de vie et l’environnement familier des classes aristocratiques, une sociabilité élégante et distinguée. En ce sens, l’architecture pavillonnaire des jardins anglo-chinois - à Kew comme à Potsdam ou à Drottningholm par exemple, ou, dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux, à Enghien, Belœil ou Boekenberg -, matérialise des lieux de plaisance, voire de « libertinage » – au sens intellectuel – liés à de nouvelles formes de sensibilité, et même à de nouvelles formes de pensée, axées sur la discontinuité, la diversité et l’esthétique du fragment. Mais, surtout, au-delà, dans un pays d’étendue réduite, de tradition intellectuelle relativement conformiste, elle a incontestablement constitué un élément d’ouverture vers le mouvement des Lumières, et elle a sans aucun doute contribué à forger la prescience d’une certaine forme de cosmopolitisme et d’appréciation de l’altérité

    Abstract: Is it possible for conservationists to approve of the reconstruction of old façades when virtually everything behind them is modern? Should they continue to protect the front façade, when the rest of the historic building has vanished? Is it socially responsible to spend government money on reconstructing a historic building that has been completely destroyed? Can one do such a thing fifty years on? According to reigning ideas in the world of conservation, the answer to all these questions is 'no'. It is felt that building a stage set is dishonest, and rebuilding something that no longer exists is labelled a lie against history. Where does this predilection for honesty originate? And why do people prefer modern architecture to the reconstruction of what has been lost? Perhaps we are witnessing the legacy of Functionalism here, a movement that denounced the building of pseudo-architecture. Functionalism originated in Romanticism, when architects turned their backs on academic formalism and strove to invent a new, rational form of building. This romantic hunger for honesty was adopted by the conservationists, giving rise to a new respect for the authentic art work and a rejection of historicist restorations. Among conservationists too, distaste arose for the cultivation of a harmonious urban image, because an urban image that is maintained artificially 'old' was seen as a form of fraud
    Abstract: Mag de monumentenzorg steun verlenen aan de reconstructie van de oude geveltjes wanneer daarachter vrijwel alles modern is? Moet de monumentenzorg alleen nog de voorgevel willen beschermen, als de rest van het monument is verdwenen? Volgens de gangbare opvattingen in de wereld van de monumentenzorg past op al dit soort vragen een negatief antwoord. Men vindt decorbouw oneerlijk, en iets herbouwen wat er niet meer is, noemt men een leugen tegen de geschiedenis. De vraag is waar deze hang naar oprechtheid vandaan komt. Misschien zien we hier de erfenis van het functionalisme dat bouwen van schijnarchitectuur verbood. Het functionalisme ontstond uit de Romantiek, toen architecten zich afkeerden van het academisch formalisme en een nieuwe rationele bouwkunst wilden uitvinden. Capables d'absorber le joueur au point de l'abstraire du monde dans lequel il évolue, les échecs reposent d'une part sur le spectacle captivant de figurines en mouvement, d'autre part sur une structure géométrique renvoyant à un nombre infini de combinaisons. Entre incarnation et abstraction, les échecs fascinent : la richesse de leurs représentations dans la littérature et les arts en est le témoin. La dimension spéculaire des échecs est souvent admise comme une évidence. Bien plus qu'un pur divertissement de la pensée, les échecs sont là pour désigner autre chose, un ailleurs, un au-delà qui reflèterait, fidèlement ou en le déformant, le monde réel. Cette puissance allégorique des échecs a été perçue dès leur implantation en Occident. Le Moyen Âge exploite en effet les possibilités du jeu en proposant plusieurs types d'interprétations symboliques, que l'on trouve notamment décrites au début du Livre des eschez amoureux moralisés, dans les premières années du XVe siècle : les pièces de l'échiquier peuvent reproduire la société civile, être à l'image de la stratégie militaire, représenter les combinaisons infinies du ciel et des planètes, ou servir d'allégorie aux batailles amoureuses. La lecture allégorique du jeu a perduré, il suffit de se rappeler la partie que le Chevalier Block joue contre la Mort dans Le Septième Sceau d'Ingmar Bergman pour s'en convaincre. L'origine des échecs remonte au début de notre ère, en Inde, où le jeu s'appelait Tchaturanga, « le jeu des quatre rois ». Il passe ensuite en Perse et se transforme au cours de ses pérégrinations, s'adaptant aux nouvelles sociétés dans lesquelles il s'implante. Les échecs n'ont plus grand-chose à voir avec le jeu indien lorsqu'ils arrivent en Occident autour du Xe siècle. Les changements les plus notables concernent la nomenclature des pièces : le vizir, firz en arabo-persan, est devenu la fierge dans l'Occident médiéval, soit la reine. L'éléphant avait une forme conique qui évoquait la mitre épiscopale chez les Anglais, qui en firent leur bishop [évêque]. Les défenses de l'éléphant rappelaient davantage aux Français le bonnet à pointe du fou. Comme pour la reine, une figure de cour est ainsi venue remplacer une figure militaire. Malgré ces différentes adaptations, le but du jeu est resté le même : il s'agit de mettre à mort le roi adverse. Si la partie d'échecs médiévale est à l'image du combat féodal, le XVIe siècle, période où l'art de la guerre est bouleversé par la généralisation de l'usage des armes à feu, voit les règles des échecs se modifier profondément ; c'est notamment à partir de ce moment-là que la reine et le fou acquièrent la possibilité de traverser tout l'échiquier. L'histoire des échecs semble ainsi refléter l'histoire de la guerre et, plus généralement, les composantes sociales du monde dans lequel on joue. C'est le caractère spéculaire de ce jeu qui est étudié dans ce volume. Les échecs façonnent-ils un monde à l'image du réel ou fonctionnent-ils comme un univers autonome ? La configuration des pièces comme la portée symbolique du jeu sont clairement influencées par le contexte social et politique de chaque époque. Cependant, bien des représentations tendent à faire de l'univers échiquéen un monde en soi. Le lieu commun du joueur d'échecs fou qui projette les règles du jeu sur la réalité qui l'entoure est là pour le montrer. Loujine - personnage dont le nom rime avec illusion en anglais, rappelle Nabokov dans sa préface - engage par exemple une partie dont l'échiquier est le monde réel. Quand il se jette par la fenêtre, il voit l'abîme « divisé en carrés clairs et en carrés sombres » : le monde ludique enferme ici le joueur dans une logique parallèle. Du jeu comme idéal, comme forme d'utopie politique ou artistique, au jeu comme univers autonome, qui modèle un récit ou une toile loin de toute volonté mimétique, ce volume, issu d'une journée d'étude organisée à l'École en 2007, se propose d'examiner les rapports qu'entretiennent les échecs avec le monde.     Abstract: The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river

To this day, American children are taught the thrilling history of the transformation of this settlement, New Netherland, and its capital, New Amsterdam, from landmark port into present-day New York State and the island of Manhattan.     Abstract: Van Santa Claus (Sinterklaas) en zijn slee (sleigh) tot aan de dollar (vernoemd naar de daalder) en Yankees (Jan Kees), de Nederlandse taal is van grote invloed geweest op het Amerikaans-Engels. Yankees, cookies en dollars laat zien hoe de Nederlandse erfenis tot ver buiten New York reikt en zelfs terug te vinden is in de indianentalen. Dit jaar wordt herdacht dat vierhonderd jaar geleden, in 1609, Henry Hudson met zijn VOC-schip voor anker ging bij Manhattan. In zijn kielzog landden Nederlandse kolonisten op het eiland die de stad Nieuw-Amsterdam stichtten. In de loop van vierhonderd jaar is het gebied getransformeerd van landbouwgrond naar de huidige wereldstad New York.     Abstract: Ernst Friedrich Sieveking is one of the outstanding personalities in Hamburg's history. He showed special talents at an early age, so that he was already a fully trained lawyer at the age of 21. He then joined a renowned law firm which he managed successfully for many years on his own. In 1879 Sieveking was appointed the first president of the newly founded Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in 1879. Until his death, for thirty years, he remained president of the Court of First Instance, which earned him a high reputation as an expert on maritime law. In addition, he was actively involved in the founding of Hamburg University, which is why he was also a member of the first board of trustees of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation. Surrounded by three representative buildings, the Sievekingplatz in Hamburg still reminds us of him to this day

    Abstract: Nauw met elkaar verbonden, maakten theater en retorica vanaf de vijftiende eeuw in de Latijnse geleerdencultuur en de volkstalige wereld van het verstedelijkte Europa een renaissance door. Op basis van onderzoek naar ideeën, (literaire) praktijken en leden laat Lustige geesten zien dat de rederijkerskamers de Nederlandse variant waren van een vroegmoderne cultuur van publieke welsprekendheid, met het theater als quintessens. Rederijkers (rhetoriziens) drukten de intellectuele en maatschappelijke missies van hun kamers uit in het kernbegrip retorica (rhetorique) dat zowel verwees naar (utopische) idealen van burgerlijkheid als naar het toepassen van kennis (conste) in een geëngageerde cultuur. De noordelijke Nederlanden (vooral Holland en Zeeland) vormden met de zuidelijke (vooral Vlaanderen en Brabant) één rederijkerswereld van overlappende netwerken waarin via een actieve lees-, gespreks- en discussiecultuur internationale culturele trends lokaal en regionaal verwerkt werden. De middelen van publieke welsprekendheid (het schrijven en opvoeren van toneelspel, lied, gedicht) waren (intern) bedoeld om (in een ludieke en competitieve sfeer) de geest van jonge mannen uit gegoede families en middengroepen te vormen. Door de organisatie (extern) van opvoering in de lokale feestcultuur en op interlokale rederijkersfestivals functioneerden kamers als publicatiecentra voor hun beste schrijvers en performers. De rederijkers droegen zo bij aan de opkomst van een volkstalige geleerdencultuur en namen deel aan het publieke debat. Lustige geesten laat zo zien op welke manieren de sociale, institutionele en culturele elementen van de rederijkerscultuur de maatschappelijke invloed van de rederijkers bepaalden en hun bijdrage aan de opkomst van de (noordelijke) Nederlanden als Europees cultureel centrum.
