    Abstract: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Abstract: "This book traces two transformations in early modern English thinking about the governance of populations. The first, spanning the Tudor and early Stuart eras, was a shift in emphasis in defining the real object of demographic knowledge and intervention. While sixteenth-century engagements with what we would consider demographic entities and processes tended to identify particular, qualitatively defined groups (referred to here as "multitudes" to distinguish them from "population" as a quantity) as their units of analysis, by the middle decades of the seventeenth century something much closer to the national population, as a total and knowable number of people, had come to the fore"--

    Abstract: "Heirs of Flesh and Paper" tells the story of early modern dynastic politics through subjects' practical responses to royal illness, failing princely reproduction, and heirs' premature deaths. It treats connected dynastic crises between 1699 and 1716 as illustrative for early modern European political regimes in which the rulers' corporeality defined politics. This political order grappled with the endemic uncertainties induced by dynastic bodies. By following the day-to-day practices of knowledge making in response to the unpredictability of royal health, the book shows how the ruling family's mortal coils regularly threatened to destabilize the institutionalized legal fiction of kingship. Dynastic politics was not only as a transitory stage of state formation, part of elite cooperation, or a cultural construct. It needs to be approached through everyday practices that put ailing dynastic bodies front and center. In a period of intensifying political planning, it constituted one of the most important sites for changing the political itself.

    Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts

    Abstract: The boni, the wealthy, but largely non-political, section of the Roman elite, have hitherto escaped scholarly attention. This book draws a detailed and rounded picture of the boni, their identity, values and interests, also tracing their - often tense - relationship to the political class, whose inner circle of noble families eventually lost their trust and support. Concerns about property played a central part in this process, and the book explores key Roman concepts associated with property, including frugality, luxury, patrimony, debt and the all-important otium that ensured the peaceful enjoyment of private possessions. Through close readings of Cicero and other republican writers, a new narrative of the 'fall of the republic' emerges. The shifting allegiances of the wider elite of boni viri played an important part in the events that brought an end to the republic and ushered in a new political system better attuned to their material interests

    Abstract: Though the Beatles are nowadays considered national treasures, this book shows how and why they inspired phobia as well as mania in 1960s Britain. As symbols of modernity in the early sixties, they functioned as a stress test for British institutions and identities, at once displaying the possibilities and establishing the limits of change. Later in the decade, they developed forms of living, loving, thinking, looking, creating, worshipping and campaigning which became subjects of intense controversy. The ambivalent attitudes contemporaries displayed towards the Beatles are not captured in hackneyed ideas of the 'swinging sixties', the 'permissive society' and the all-conquering 'Fab Four'. Drawing upon a wealth of contemporary sources, The Beatles and Sixties Britain offers a new understanding of the band as existing in creative tension with postwar British society: their disruptive presence inciting a wholesale re-examination of social, political and cultural norms

It argues that they were iconic, divisive, atypical and prefigurative: themes introduced and illustrated in the preface using contemporary cartoons. Their depiction as icons in the 1964 Daily Mail cartoon contrasted starkly with their first appearance in a Fleet Street cartoon twelve months previously, when theirs was one of a barrage of British records raining down on the Kremlin in a display of soft power. They received minor billing in February 1963 compared to Susan Maughan, Helen Shapiro, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith, Marty Wilde and the Tornados, as befitted a band whose second single (Please Please Me) was competing for the number one spot with Frank Ifield's The Wayward Wind (1963). Over the following year, they achieved what commentators agreed to be an unprecedented celebrity"--

Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

    Abstract: Music has long been an avenue for protest, seen as a way to promote freedom and equality, instill hope, and fight for change. Popular music, in particular, is considered to be an effective form of subversion and resistance under oppressive circumstances. But as Nomi Dave shows us in The Revolution's Echoes, the opposite is also true-music can often support, rather than challenge, the powers that be. Examining fifty years of history in Guinea, Dave introduces readers to the music supporting the authoritarian regime of former president Sékou Touré, and to the musicians who, even long after his death, have continued to praise dictators and avoid dissent. Dave shows that this isn't just the result of state manipulation-even in the absence of coercion, musicians and their audiences take real pleasure in musical praise of leaders. Time and again, whether in traditional music or in newer genres such as rap, Guinean musicians have celebrated state power and authority. With The Revolution's Echoes, Dave insists that we must grapple with the uncomfortable truth that some forms of music choose to support authoritarianism, generating new pleasures and new politics in the process

Die meist missverstandene Bewertung der Romantik von Heimat wird ebenso behandelt wie die Propaganda in der Kolonialzeit, im Ersten Weltkrieg und im Nationalsozialismus. Ein systematischer Teil beleuchtet im Kontext von Heimat umstrittene Begriffe wie Kitsch oder Nostalgie. Damit leistet der Band einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Versachlichung einer ideologisch stark aufgeladenen Debatte und hilft, die oft zu Schlagworten verkürzten Argumente besser zu verstehen.
    Abstract: Der Begriff Heimat polarisiert. In der politischen Debatte wird er von Verteidigern wie Kritikern instrumentalisiert. Susanne Scharnowski zeichnet erstmals die Entwicklung des Heimatgedankens in der deutschen Kulturgeschichte vom 17. Jh. bis heute nach und diskutiert sein Verhältnis zu Romantik, Kitsch, Nostalgie, Fremdenhass und Drittem Reich.

    Abstract: Frauen sind im Alter oft von Armut bedroht, besonders in Städten mit hohen Mieten. Wie kommen sie mit wenig Geld zurecht? Welche Strategien entwickeln sie, um dennoch am sozialen und kulturellen Leben teilzuhaben? Davon erzählen Frauen aus unterschiedlichen sozialen Milieus, und die Analyse dieser Berichte macht deutlich, wie dringend notwendig eine politische und gesellschaftliche Veränderung unserer eingespielten Sozialsysteme ist.
    Abstract: Die 85-jährige Hausmeisterin Maiana D. lebt von 222 Euro Rente, zuzüglich Grundsicherung. 600 Euro Rente hat die ehemalige Lagerarbeiterin Jovana F., die sie mit Zeitungsverkauf aufbessert. Auch Walburga K., Verlagsangestellte, muss zu ihrer Rente von 1170 Euro noch dazu verdienen. Fünzig Frauen zwischen 63 und 85 Jahren aus unterschiedlichen sozialen Milieus wurden für das DFG-Forschungsprojekt unter der Leitung von Prof. Irene Götz interviewt. Aus dieser exemplarischen Bestandsaufnahme wird deutlich, welche Ursachen zur Altersarmut besonders von Frauen führen und wie Frauen damit umgehen, lebenspraktisch und emotional. Auch wenn Frauen ihren Ruhestand wohl verdient haben, reichen die bescheidenen Renten kaum zum Nötigsten. Zum Glück haben sie, als Kriegs- und Nachkriegskinder, noch gelernt, zu sparen und mit dem Mangel zu wirtschaften. Armut im Alter muss auch nicht den Verlust von Lebensqualität bedeuten: Frauen sind erfinderisch, sozial kompetent und oft auch gut vernetzt und, Autonomie steht für sie bis zum Schluss ganz oben. Ein Buch, das die politischen, gesellschaftlichen und persönlichen Verhältnisse in den Blick nimmt, das erzählt und analysiert und in einem Anhang notwendige Informationen bietet, wo Frauen Unterstützung kriegen, die sie so dringend benötigen.

Diffuse Ängste im Zuge gesellschaftlicher und technologischer Mobilisierung spielten dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie bestimmte Befürchtungen, etwa vor einer Eskalation des kalten Krieges. Biess' Darstellung spürt der kontinuierlichen Verunsicherung in einer sich demokratisierenden und liberalisierenden Gesellschaft nach.     Abstract: "Over much of its rule, the Syrian regime of Hafez al-Asad and his successor, Bashar al-Asad, used violence on a massive scale, deploying disproportionate physical and destructive force to silence its critics and opponents. Indeed, the regime, as constituted under the al-Asads, has as its nucleus not only the figures occupying the top rung of political office, but also the apparatuses of violence, in particular the security services and elite military units. This security regime (al-nidham al-amni) has consistently acted in ways that convey the message that violence is the primary and organising modality of action in dealing with domestic opposition. The extent and scope of killing and destruction mounted by the security and military forces over approximately 40 years of al-Asad regime rule has made manifest a politics of extermination and annihilation as integral to the form of rule in Syria. Rather than betraying an irrational approach to government, this violence is governmental, not in the sense of being merely repressive, but as productive and performative...as shaping regime-citizen relations and forming political subjectivities"...

    Abstract: A critical appraisal of Scotland's cultural wealth and global distinctionThe Wealth of the Nation explores how Scotland has continued to assert its distinctive cultural difference despite the three-hundred-year union with England and the modern forces of globalisation. Dealing with Scotland since the eighteenth century, the study analyses how Scottish culture defined itself within the British Empire and how, in the late twentieth century, it recovered from the collapse of the Empire to rebuild the value of its cultural past. Through its focus on the role of memory in philosophy, literature and the visual arts, readers will gain understanding of the influence that modern Scottish writers and artists have had on contemporary Scottish nationalism. The book argues that political nationalism in modern Scotland is founded on a cultural revival that began in the 1950s and 60s but gained momentum from resistance to the outcome of the 1979 devolution referendum. That resistance, and the creative achievements which it generated, provoked a re-examination of the nation's cultural history, revealing a wealth previously denied or forgotten.

    Abstract: Memory is as central to modern politics as politics is central to modern memory. We are so accustomed to living in a forest of monuments, to having the past represented to us through museums, historic sites, and public sculpture, that we easily lose sight of the recent origins and diverse meanings of these uniquely modern phenomena. In this volume, leading historians, anthropologists, and ethnographers explore the relationship between collective memory and national identity in diverse cultures throughout history. Placing commemorations in their historical settings, the contributors disclose the contested nature of these monuments by showing how groups and individuals struggle to shape the past to their own ends. The volume is introduced by John Gillis's broad overview of the development of public memory in relation to the history of the nation-state.     Abstract: It is a little known fact that as early as the thirteenth century, Europe's political and religious powers tried to physically mark and distinguish the Jews from the rest of society. During the Renaissance, Italian Jews first had to wear a yellow round badge on their chest, and then later, a yellow beret. The discriminatory marks were a widespread phenomenon with serious consequences for Jewish communities and their relations with Christians. Beginning with a sartorial study - how the Jews were marked on their clothing and what these marks meant - the book offers an in-depth analysis of anti-Jewish discrimination across three Italian city-states: Milan, Genoa, and Piedmont. Moving beyond Italy, it also examines the place of Jews and Jewry law in the increasingly interconnected world of Early Modern European politics

    Abstract: This is a revolutionary reinterpretation of the French past from the early fifteenth century to the establishment of the Third Republic, focused on public challenges and defenses of masculine hierarchy in relations between women and men. Karen Offen surveys heated exchanges around women's 'influence'; their exclusion from 'authority'; the increasing prominence of biomedical thinking and population issues; concerns about education, intellect, and the sexual politics of knowledge; and the politics of women's work. Initially, the majority of commentators were literate and influential men. However, as more and more women attained literacy, they too began to analyze their situation in print and to contest men's claims about who women were and should be, and what they should be restrained from doing, and why. As urban print culture exploded and revolutionary ideas of 'equality' fuelled women's claims for emancipation, this question resonated throughout francophone Europe and, ultimately, across the seas

    Abstract: "This literary-historical study seeks to dismantle the prevailing notion that Germany, in the period following the Second World War, exhibited an 'inability to mourn,' arguing that in fact the period experienced a surge of affect. Anna Parkinson examines the emotions explicitly manifested or addressed in a variety of German cultural artifacts, while also identifying previously unacknowledged (and under-theorized) affective structures implicitly at work during the country's national crisis. Much of the scholarship in the expanding field of affect theory distrusts Freudian psychoanalysis, which does not differentiate between emotion and affect. One of the book's major contributions is that it offers an analytical distinction between emotion and affect, finding a compelling way to talk about affect and emotion that is informed by affect theory but that integrates psychoanalysis. The study draws on the psychoanalytic writings of Freud, Margarete and Alexander Mitscherlich, and André Green, while engaging with interdisciplinary theorists of affect including Barbara Rosenwein, Lauren Berlant, Ann Cvetkovich, and Eve Kosofsk Sedgwick, among many others; 'Offers a truly original, even pathbreaking, contribution to the study of postwar West German culture, while making a very important intervention in the theoretical debate on the study of emotions.     Abstract: Der Begriff der Aneignung erlebt in Diskursen zu Theorie, Praxis und Politik der Stadtentwicklung ein Revival: Angesichts der Dynamiken spätmoderner Ökonomie und Politik geht es um die Verfügbarkeit und den selbstbestimmten Gebrauch von städtischem Raum und Lebenszeit. Dieser Diskurs schließt auch das »Selber machen« von urbanen Freiräumen mit ein, »Stadtentwicklung von unten« soll die urbanen Freiräume von morgen bestimmen. Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.

    Abstract: "The early Soviet Union's 'nationalities policy' involved the formation of many national republics, within which 'nation building' and 'modernization' were undertaken for the benefit of 'backward' peoples. This book, in considering how such policies were implemented in Azerbaijan, argues that the Soviet policies were in fact a form of imperialism, with 'nation building' and 'modernization' imposed firmly along Soviet lines. The book demonstrates that in Azerbaijan, and more widely among western Turkic peoples, the Volga and Crimean Tatars, there were before the onset of Soviet rule long standing, well developed, forward looking, secular, national movements, which were not at all 'backward' and which had different visions to the Soviets. The book shows how in the period 1920 to 1940 the two different visions competed with each other, with eventually the pre-Soviet vision of Azerbaijani culture losing out, and the Soviet version prevailing. The book examines the details of this Sovietization of culture: in language policy and the change of the alphabet, in education, higher education and in literature. The book concludes by exploring how pre-Soviet Azerbaijani culture survived to a degree underground, and how it was partially rehabilitated after the death of Stalin and more fully in the late Soviet period"...Provided by publisher
