Provides an interface between sociolinguistic research and other linguistic disciplines, in particular discourse analysis, typology, construction grammar but also more formal approaches Incorporates innovative methodology that draws on discourse analytic, typological and sociolinguistic approaches Investigates the system both in its diachronic development as well as via cross-variety comparisons Presents careful definition of the envelope of variation and considers alternative definitions of the phenomenon "quotation" Empirical findings are reported from distribution and perception data, which allows comparing and contrasting perception and reality "-- , Includes bibliographical references and index

Conclusion , This book provides a broad sociolinguistic perspective on major questions of political and cultural Europeanization. It is concerned with European Multilingualism as it actually results from the intersecting endeavour of policy making and scientific research. This volume argues that the EU must overcome the major discrepancies of its linguistic diversity politics by developing into a multiple inclusive society beyond the nation-state in order to seriously unfold European Multilingualism as a political goal. Expanding on the theoretical and methodological approaches developed within the EU project LINEE (Languages in a Network of European Excellence), this book further focuses on the LINEE key variables of European Multilingualism i.e. 'culture', 'discourse', 'identity', 'ideology', 'knowledge', 'LPP', 'multi-competence', and 'power & conflict'. Against this background, this study argues for reconceptualising European Multilingualism on the basis of an integrative and multi-focal approach

Description / Table of Contents: It has become commonplace to employ dialogue-based approaches in producing and communicating knowledge in diverse fields. Here, "dialogue" has become a buzzword that promises democratic, participatory processes of mutual learning and knowledge co-production. But what does "dialogue" actually entail in the fields in which it is practised and how can we analyse those practices in ways that take account of their complexities? The Promise of Dialogue presents a novel theoretical framework for analysing the dialogic turn in the production and communication of knowledge that builds bridges across th

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Within the social sciences and the humanities, it is now widely accepted that the role of language in social life cannot be understood without a study of the interface between linguistic forms and the cultural practices that they help constitute. Linguistic anthropologists have been at the forefront of such a study for decades. A Companion to Linguistic Anthropology continues in the same tradition by providing a series of in-depth explorations of key concepts and approaches by some of the scholars whose work constitutes the theoretical and methodological foundations of the contemporary study of language as culture. Senior scholars who have shaped the field in the last twenty to thirty years are joined by more junior colleagues who provide a fresh perspective on well-established areas of inquiry and new conceptualizations. The volume also includes a comprehensive bibliography of over 2000 entries designed as a resource for anyone seeking a guide to the literature of linguistic anthropology

Note: Master and use copy. Digital master created according to Benchmark for Faithful Digital Reproductions of Monographs and Serials, Version 1. Digital Library Federation, December 2002 , Includes bibliographical references (p. [315]-332) and index , This volume deals with the complex but poorly understood relationship between women, gender, and language in Morocco, a Muslim, multilingual, multicultural, and developing country. The hypothesis on which the book is based is that an understanding of gender perception and women's agency can be achieved only by taking into account the structure of power in a specific culture and that language is an important component of this power. In Moroccan culture, history, geography, Islam, orality, multilingualism, social organization, economic status, and political system constitute the superstructures of power within which factors such as social differences, contextual differences, and identity differences interact in the daily linguistic performances of gender. Moroccan women are far from constituting a homogeneous group, consequently the choices available to them vary in nature and empowering capacity, thus 'widening' the spectrum of gender beyond cultural limits

The 1996 constitution of South Africa is founded on the political philosophy of pluralism and is directed at promoting democratic values, equity and non-discrimination, human rights, national unity and the development of all the country s communities. The question asked in LiSA is how language planning can contribute towards the attainment of these national ideals. Set against the language political realities of the country the a-symmetric power relations between the languages; the striking differences in the structural; functional and symbolic adaptation of the official languages; and the many language-related problems in the country it debates the role of language in state administration, national integration, educational development and economic development. The volume concludes with a discussion of language development and language management

Such thinking has held implications for the setting of language policies, from hanging a wooden clog around the neck of a child heard speaking Occitan in Southern France to the considerable budgeting in Ireland for the promotion of Irish. Abstract: Many linguists have believed that there is no connection between culture and language structures.
