From the scars left by Franco's dams and mines to the toxic waste dumped in Equatorial Guinea, from the cruelty of the modern pork industry to the ravages of mass tourism in the Balearic Islands, this book delves into the power relations, material practices and social imaginaries underpinning the global economic system to uncover its unaffordable human and non-human costs. Guiding the reader through the rapidly emerging field of Spanish environmental cultural studies, with chapters on such topics as extractivism, animal studies, food studies, ecofeminism, decoloniality, critical race studies, tourism, and waste studies, an international team of US and European scholars show how Spanish writers, artists, and filmmakers have illuminated and contested the growth-oriented and neo-colonialist assumptions of the current Capitalocene era.     Abstract: Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire

    Abstract: ‘Race Is Everything’ looks at ideas of ‘racial science’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and how art was influenced by them. It looks at race in general, but with a particular concentration on attitudes towards and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. David Bindman argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance, and especially skull-shape, can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. This book considers many aspects, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the ‘Mediterranean race’; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

    Abstract: Erstmals werden in Berlin hochrangige Kunstwerke der vorislamischen Epochen aus Museen und Instituten Usbekistans präsentiert. Sie führen in eine weitgehend unbekannte Welt. Seitdem Alexander der Große im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. auf seinem beispiellosen Kriegszug auch in die zentralasiatischen Gebiete vordrang, gelangten hellenistische Einflüsse in diese Region. Mit der Einwanderung nomadischer Reiterstämme aus China entwickelte sich eine Bau- und Kunstsprache, die östliche und westliche Elemente in besonderer Art und Weise verband. Diese Verbindung künstlerischer Traditionen des Hellenismus mit Einflüssen aus Indien und den Traditionen der Steppenvölker erlebte im Reich der Kuschan vom 1. bis ins 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. ihre Blütezeit. So entstand in den Palästen, den großen Städten und den buddhistischen Klöstern eine einzigartige Bilderwelt. Unter den Lehmhügeln der verfallenen Gebäude überdauerten deren Zeugnisse bis zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung die Stürme der Zeit. Sámi Horizonte" stoßen die zeitgenössischen Kunstwerke von samischen Künstler:innen im Dialog mit historischen Beständen aus dem MARKK den überfälligen Perspektivwechsel auf Geschichte und Gegenwart der samischen Gemeinschaften an. Ein Besuch in dieser Ausstellung bietet die Gelegenheit für Schüler:innen und Erwachsene, die samische Kultur besser kennenzulernen, samischen Stimmen aktiv zuzuhören und mehr über den nordischen Kolonialismus in Europa zu erfahren. Diese Ausstellung könnte im Rahmen von folgenden Fächern/Kursen besucht werden: Geschichte, Geographie, bildende Kunst, Musik, PGW, Recht, Theater.

    Abstract: La coiffure et les poils humains, au même titre que les vêtements, les bijoux et les accessoires, participent depuis des siècles à la construction des apparences. À la frontière entre la mode et la représentation du corps, le sujet ne laisse personne indifférent. Dans la culture occidentale, le cheveu hirsute autant que l'excès de poils ont souvent été associés au diable, à l'animal et à l'homme sauvage. Si bien que pendant des siècles la femme et l'homme civilisés ont dû peigner, dompter et parfois même dissimuler leur toison. Parce que le poil est un matériau corporel qui peut être transformé de mille et une manières - étiré, coupé, complété, coloré, orné, caché ou exhibé -, il est un élément essentiel de la mise en scène de soi qui permet d'afficher l'adhésion à une mode, une conviction, une contestation et est porteur de nombreuses significations, telles la féminité, la virilité, la négligence, etc. Quelques noms de coiffures célèbres - à la Fontanges, à la Titus, à la garçonne, à l'iroquoise, etc. - révèlent que les cheveux sont eux aussi l'objet de véritables phénomènes de mode, porteurs de codes sociaux et culturels que les contemporains de chaque époque savent décrypter. De la fin du Moyen Âge à nos jours, ce livre aborde plusieurs thèmes inhérents à l'histoire de la coiffure (cheveux peignés, coupés, ornés ; perruques, postiches, calvitie ; coloration), sans oublier les questions liées à la pilosité faciale (visages imberbes, barbes, moustaches, sourcils) et à la pilosité corporelle (torse, jambes, pubis, aisselles, épilation). L'utilisation de cheveux pour réaliser des bijoux, la gloire des coiffeurs superstars ou encore l'emploi des cheveux dans la haute couture sont d'autres thèmes qui offriront au lecteur de nombreuses surprises

    Abstract: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet. Ein Bericht über die Neuerungen des Online-Handbuchs Heimatpresse sowie der Fotografen- und Künstlerdatenbank schließt den Sammelband ab.     Abstract: "The edited collection focuses on the links between young people and African popular culture. It explores popular culture produced and consumed by young people in contemporary Africa. And by "culture," we mean all kinds of texts or representations-visual, oral, written, performative, fictional, social, and virtual-created by African youth, mostly about their lives and their immediate societies, and for themselves, but also consumed by the larger public, and shared locally and globally. We proceed from the premise that cultural texts not only function as "social facts" as Karin Barber argues, but that they double as "commentaries upon, and interpretations of, social facts. They are part of social reality, but they also take up an attitude to social reality" (2007, 04). So, the work focuses specifically on what African youth produce as popular culture, under what conditions or contexts they produce such work, how they produce those texts, why they produce them, the aesthetic dimensions of these texts as cultural artifacts, and why these textual practices matter as social facts, as interpretive acts, and as cultural symbols of the general cultural activism of young people in a rapidly changing world, a world where the global cultural economy is the prime terrain for the relentless struggles over the meanings that come to shape political-economic and social systems"--

    Abstract: In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in der DDR setzten sich Künstler*innen in vielfältigen Ausdrucksformen und Stilen mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit auseinander. Dabei wurde das künstlerische Schaffen nicht nur durch staatsübergreifende Erinnerungsdiskurse beeinflusst. Vielmehr erzielten künstlerische Auseinandersetzungen mit der Vergangenheit eine emotionalisierende Wirkung auf das Ausstellungspublikum in Ost- und Westdeutschland und beeinflussten somit auch die Vergangenheitsdiskussionen. Florian Korn untersucht diese Auseinandersetzungen mit der NS-Vergangenheit sowie die Auswirkungen von Bildern auf den deutsch-deutschen Erinnerungsdiskurs in vergleichender Perspektive.

    Abstract: Gardening together, becoming subsistent, shaping the city, living art and at the same time reflecting on the utopian sense or nonsense of this activity that was the motto of the neighbourhood garden "Keimzelle" (engl. nucleus) (2011-2019) in Hamburg.     Abstract: Gemeinsam gärtnern, subsistent werden, Stadt gestalten, Kunst leben und zugleich über den utopischen Sinn oder Unsinn dieses Tuns nachdenken - das war die Devise des Nachbarschaftsgartens »Keimzelle« (2011-2019) in Hamburg. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes liefern in diesem Kontext eine theoretisch fundierte wie künstlerisch anschauliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem transformativen Potenzial von urbanen Räumen des Selbermachens. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered.     Abstract: Artistic (Self)-Representations of Islam and Muslims: Perspectives Across France and the Maghreb is a collection of essays that explores the question of artistic representation(s)/self-representation(s) of Muslim religious and cultural identity in France, the Maghreb and in/between since the 2000s. The volume offers a plurality of feminine and masculine voices and points of view on cultural Islam (Franco-French, Franco-Maghrebi, Maghrebi), all the while addressing the impact of events like 9/11, the tragic attacks in France in 2015-2016 (Charlie Hebdo, Stade de France, Bataclan, Nice), and the Arab Spring. Taken together, the volume features a transnational and transversal set of artistic voices that are not looking for consensus, but rather invoke dissensus (Rancière) and a full range of expression.
    Abstract: A necessary part of that full range of expression is (self)-representations: Muslims representing themselves, though this is no facile (self)-representations, as artists continue to use the properties of the imagination and performance to complexify an easy reading, reductive meaning, or oversimplified interpretation. This interdisciplinary study contributes to the fields of French and Francophone Studies, Humanities and Global/Cultural Studies such as political studies, sociology, political philosophy, literature, cinema, visual arts and media studies with a focus on broadening views on the topic of Islam and Muslim (self)-representations across disciplines. Ramona Mielusel is Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

    Abstract: Dès ses origines au 18e siècle, le tourisme a suscité de nombreuses critiques. Il incarnerait un double négatif du voyage: ses adeptes parcourraient le globe sans autre but que leur plaisir immédiat, nivelant les diversités culturelles, créant des mondes factices, creusant les inégalités sociales et détruisant les ressources naturelles.Cultivé dans la littérature, la production scientifique et les médias, cet antagonisme traduit pourtant un jugement de valeur. En focalisant sur les travers de l'industrie touristique, il élude trop souvent les raisons qui poussent aujourd'hui plus d'un milliard de personnes à sillonner la planète. Il masque aussi tout un pan des interactions entre visiteurs et visités, notamment des phénomènes de revivalisme culturel, d'inventions, de résistance et d'affirmation.L'exposition Le mal du voyage invite à questionner l'homogénéité du champ touristique.     Abstract: One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city.00Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions.     Abstract: "Once seen as a collection of artifacts and ritual objects, African art now commands respect from museums and collectors. Bennetta Jules-Rosette and J.R. Osborn explore the reframing of African art through case studies of museums and galleries in the United States, Europe, and Africa. The authors take a three-pronged approach. Part One ranges from curiosity cabinets to virtual websites to offer a history of ethnographic and art museums and look at their organization and methods of reaching out to the public. In the second part, the authors examine museums as ecosystems and communities within communities, and they use semiotic methods to analyze images, signs, and symbols drawn from the experiences of curators and artists. The third part introduces innovative strategies for displaying, disseminating, and reclaiming African art. The authors also propose how to reinterpret the art inside and outside the museum and show ways of remixing the results. Drawing on extensive conversations with curators, collectors, and artists, African Art Reframed is an essential guide to building new exchanges and connections in the dynamic worlds of African and global art."

    Abstract: Antarctica, that icy wasteland and extreme environment at the ends of the earth, was – at the beginning of the 20th century – the last frontier of Victorian imperialism, a territory subjected to heroic and sometimes desperate exploration. Now, at the start of the 21st century, Antarctica is the vulnerable landscape behind iconic images of climate change. In this genre-crossing narrative Gould takes us on a journey to the South Pole, through art and archive. Through the life and tragic death of Edward Wilson, polar explorer, doctor, scientist and artist, and his watercolours, and through the work of a pioneer of modern anthropology and opponent of scientific racism, Franz Boas, Gould exposes the legacies of colonialism and racial and gendered identities of the time. Antarctica, the White Continent, far from being a blank – and white – canvas, is revealed to be full of colour. Gould argues that the medium matters and that the practices of observation in art, anthropology and science determine how we see and what we know. Stories of exploration and open-air watercolour painting, of weather experiments and ethnographic collecting, of evolution and extinction, are interwoven to raise important questions for our times. Revisiting Antarctica through the archive becomes the urgent endeavour to imagine an inhabitable planetary future.
